SHONAGH RAITT IS TOP ANGUS QUALIFIER

Shonagh RaittForfar's Shonagh Raitt, pictured right, the title-winner in 1997, was the leading qualifier by a four-stroke margin when the Angus women's county golf championship began at Royal Montrose last Friday.
Shonagh, who lost in the finals of 1989, 1991 and 1996, had a score of 74, four shots ahead of the No 2 seed, defending champion Dawn Dewar from Monifieth.
The only other player among the 16 qualifiers for the match-play stages to break 80 in adverse weather conditions was Lynne Fenton (Abertay), champion in 1998 and 1999 and beaten by Miss Dewar in last year's final.
Shonagh Raitt made the longish trip down to Troon to play in the Helen Holm Scottish women's open amateur stroke-play championship the following day and also on Sunday. But Ann Ramsay (Kirriemuir), Angus champion in 2000 and beaten in the 2001 final, another competitor in the "Helen Holm," did not figure among the 16 qualifiers at Royal Montrose on the Friday. Presumably she did not enter her county championship this year.
The championship continues at the same venue on Sunday, May 4 when the first and second rounds of the match-play will be played in both the scratch and handicap sections. The tournament will conclude on Sunday, May 11.
