Ayrshire County Championship

Ayrshire county Captain, Marian Wilson writes:
Sharon Lambie, Laura Moffat and Catherine MalcolmThe usual sea of green sweaters at a County Championship - not to say the wave of waterproofs - melted away at Costa del Troon as Ayrshire staged the event this week. If last year’s glorious weather at Turnberry was a welcome surprise in a dismal 2002, temperatures in the seventies had shorts, suntan cream and sunglasses the order of the day.
Sharon Lambie was the leading qualifier at her home club but the matchplay threw up some royal battles amongst team players and partnerships as most matches went to the final holes.
Leslie Hendry [West of Scotland Girls’ Champion] made an excellent start in her move from Junior to Senior golf with some impressive golf under pressure and would add to her experience the old lesson of golf that it is easier to come from behind to snatch a win than maintain what seems a comfortable lead.
The winner was Laura Moffat [West Kilbride] who beat Catherine Malcolm [Prestwick St Cuthberts] by one hole after a quality final. Catherine, a former champion, put out the holder and leading qualifier, Sharon Lambie on the eighteenth green in the first semi-final, while Laura beat Morag McQueen from Largs by 4 and 3.
