FIFE WIN EAST DIVISION TICKET TO FINALS
Fife won the East Division women's inter-county team championship at windswept Kirkcaldy Golf Club today for the first time since 1997. In the match between the only two 100 per cent winning teams after two days' play, Fife scored a comprehensive 6 1/2-2 1/2 win over Midlothian.
Fife took the foursomes 3-0 and then Louise Kenney from Pitreavie claimed the scalp of Vagliano Trophy team selection Vikki Laing of Musselburgh by 4 and 3. Other singles winners for Fife were Fiona Lockhart and Elaine Moffat.
The contest to decide who would finished third in the table finished in a draw: Stirling & Clackmannan 4 1/2-East Lothian 4 1/2. Stirling & Clackmannan, with a much weakened team to defend the title which sent them on to win the Scottish crown last year, did not win any of their three matches. Neither did East Lothian.
Fife now go forward to represent the East Division in the Scottish county finals from September 19 to 21 and the bonus for them is that they will be played on a home venue, Scotscraig at Tayport. Ayrshire are also through as West Division winners earlier this week.
The North and South Division championships will be played next weekend.
The most successful players in the three-day Kirkcaldy competition were Fife's Louise Kenney, Fiona Lockhart and Elaine Moffat and Heather MacRae (Stirling & Clackmannan), all with 5pt of six apiece.
Midlothian's best performers were Claire Hargan and Belinda Murphy with 4 1/2pt apiece while two players, Shonagh McEwan and Jayne Smith top scored for East Lothian with 3pt each.
