Lanarkshire Ladies County Championship
MAY HUGHES WINS LANARKSHIRE TITLE AGAIN AFTER 10-YEAR GAP
HISTORY repeated itself for May Hughes in the Lanarkshire women's county
golf championship at Cathkin Braes this week. Ten years ago, over the
same Rutherglen course, May won the title for the first and only time
until today when she again battled her way through to the final and regained
the championship trophy.
Mrs Hughes beat Lesley Lloyd (Hayston) at the 19th after winning the first
four holes but then seeing her big lead chipped away. Miss Lloyd climaxed
her comeback by winning the 17th and 18th to square the final but, in
sudden-death, May's par at the first extra hole was decisive.
In the morning semi-finals, Lesley Lloyd, daughter of Tartan Tour secretary
Peter Lloyd, had scored an outstanding win against the leading qualifier
and title favourite, Jenna Wilson (Strathaven) by one hole. Lesley was
three up after nine holes but young Jenna squared the tie at the 15th.
After halves at the next two holes, Miss Wilson missed a vital putt on
the 18th green and Miss Lloyd won the hole and the match.
In the other tie, May Hughes, beaten finalist in 1986 and 1991, secured
her fourth appearance in the final
with a 3 and 2 win over Janice Gardner (Drumpellier).
Results:
Semi-finals _ L Lloyd (Hayston) beat J Wilson (Strathaven) 1 hole, M
Hughes (Wishaw) beat J Gardner (Drumpellier) 3 and 2.
Final _ Hughes beat Lloyd at 19th.
TEENAGER JENNA IN LANARK LAST FOUR
LEADING qualifier Jenna Wilson from Strathaven swept through to Friday
morning's semi-finals of the Lanarkshire women's county golf championship
with two impressive wins at Cathkin Braes on Thursday.
Miss Wilson, 19, beat host-club member Pauline Warlow by 7 and 5 and then
accounted for Moray Meechan (East Kilbride) by 6 and 5.
Jenna now plays Lesley Lloyd (Hayston), beaten finalist in 1998, 1999
and last year.
Miss Lloyd beat the 1995 champion, Ruth Rankin (Lanark) by 5 and 4 and
then won on the last green against SLGA vice-chairman Pat Hutton, a member
of the successful Scottish veteran women's team.
The other semi-final is between Janice Gardner (Drumpellier), the 1994
