RENFREWSHIRE CHAMPION SARA FAILS TO QUALIFY THIS YEAR

Defending champion Sara Harman of Williamwood has failed to reach the match-play stages of the Renfrewshire women's county golf championship this time round. Sarah had a round of 86 in the qualifying round at Caldwell Golf Club, two strokes too many to get the last of the 16 places.
That went to former Scottish champion Heather Anderson of the host club after a hour or so when Mrs Anderson was in the match-play draw, then out of it and finally back in. Heather had left the clubhouse after qualifying safely with a gross score of 80 but when she got home and took her clubs out of her car, she realised she had played with 15 clubs (two putters) in her bag, instead of the maximum number of 14.
Heather drove back to the Caldwell clubhouse, informed the organising officials of her inadvertent transgression of the Rules of Golf and the automatic imposition of a four-stroke penalty boosted her score to 84 and put her outwith the leading 16 qualifiers.
Then another player who had qualified phoned the clubhouse to say that she would have to withdraw from the match-play ... and that allowed Heather Anderson back into the championship in the last of the 16 places.
The leading qualifier in a field of 63 was Jennifer Mack (Haggs Castle), a member of the Scotland team who beat Ireland in a veterans' international at Prestwick recently. Jennifer had a score of 76 against the SSS of 71 and a CSS of 72. Mrs Mack's opponent this morning will be Heather Anderson, who was the captain of the veterans' team.
Karen Fitzgerald (Turnberry), with a 77, claimed the No 2 seed position in the automatic draw.
