Hello Cal Golf fans-
The 2004 Fall Season has come to a close for Cal Women's Golf. This past
week at the Las Vegas Founders tournament we teed up the youngest squad
since the inaugural year of the program. With two juniors, one sophomore
and two freshman the team lacked experience but oozed potential. We
finished on a high note with a round of 299 but unfortunately couldn't
break into the top 10 and took 13th place.
Junior Sofie Andersson led the team from the first day. Coming off a huge
win at the 2004 World Amateur, Sofie's confidence was high and that showed
in her game. After fighting 35 mph winds, with a wind chill of freezing,
the first day Sofie came up big with a score of 76, she followed that up
with two solid rounds of 71 and 74. She finished top-10 and continued her
quest for All-American Honors. Sofie was given great support from Sophia
Sheridan, her fellow upper-classman. Sophia fired rounds of
78-74-76. Sophia finishes the fall season being the only player to have
all rounds in the seventies and had been very consistent for the Bears.
We saw moments of greatness from all three of our underclassmen. There
were tremendous displays of confidence, technical ability and
competitiveness. Unfortunately, their lack of college golf experience and
nerves took over at times. All three players, Jen Sanders, Meredith Godwin
and Danielle Nash contributed to the team score. Danielle and Jen were
very key on the final day. After being four over through five holes, Jen
fought her way back to two over and completed the tournament with a closing
round of 74. Similar to Jen, Danielle made a double bogey and a bogey
within the first eight holes but hung on to finish with a round of 75. It
was a pleasure to coach these new Bears and it was obvious that they will
all be successful at Cal.
