CURTIS CUP - the highest honor of all in female amateur golf. This
years
team includes the famous Michelle Wie, Paula Creamer, #1 collegiate
player
Liz Janengelo, #1 freshman player of the year Brittany Lang, 2003
College
Player of the Year Erica Blasberg, top junior Jane Park, Annie Thurman,
and
Cal's very own Sarah Huarte! This has been Sarah's goal since the
Curtis
Cup in 2002, when she watched Vikki Laing, former Cal Bear, play
on
ESPN. We are delighted for Sarah and can't wait to support her on
June
12-13 in Formby, England.
TEAM PLAY - We played last week in our first tournament of the spring.
It
was a very successful in highlighting our weak areas as a team.
The greens
at Palos Verdes Golf Club were exceptionally fast and undulating.
As a
team we struggled immensely with them. It demonstrated to us as
coaches
the need to keep working on our short game skills and how important
those
are for keeping the scores low, double bogeys are a result of bad
short
games!
We finished ninth in the field with rounds of 304-308-309. We finished
ahead of archrivals Stanford which is always a success!
Individually Claire Dury led the Bears with an eleventh place finish
and
rounds of 72-77-75. It was a strong field and Claire was pleased
with her
results. Sohia Sheridan was not far behind Claire with 74-77-78.
Other
notable scores were Sarah Huarte 81-77-77 and Anna Temple
77-78-82. Freshman Danielle Nash replaced Sofie Andersson, who is
rehabilitating a back injury, in the line up. It was Danielle's
first
strokeplay tournament as part of the starting five.
The Palos Verdes Golf Club was incredible. The course was in unbelievable
condition, the staff helpful and our host family, Dick and Reenie
Zickhur,
very kind. We had a very nice visit with them.
We leave on Saturday for Tucson, Arizona.
Please note the date of our end of the year banquet will be April
29th,
2004 at 6:30pm.
Hope you are all well,
Go Bears!
