FIRST HANDICAP

147 Ashley Kerr (Windyhill).

Anne Laing (Vale of Leven) was the five-stroke winenr of the West of Scotland (closed) women’s amateur championship on a beautiful, sunny day at Cardross.

It was so sunny that some players were very sunburned by the end of 36 holes.

Anne Laing opened up a clear lead after a first-round 73 and only defending champion Claire Hargan, whose home club was Cardross until recently when she switched to Prestonfield in Edinburgh where she now lives and works, had a better second round.

Anne had a 75 for 148 (two under the CSS) and Claire’s afternoon score of 72 (an improvement of nine shots on her first round) gave her a total of 153, the same as Sara Bishop (Windyhill). Claire’s better second round (72 to 76) was the tie-breaker.

Two players made an eagle at the par-5 18th, British girls match-play and stroke-play champion Clare Queen (Drumpellier) in her first round and Claire Hargan in her second round.
