From COLIN FARQUHARSON

Kelly BrothertonTULLIALLAN teenager Kelly Brotherton shot two rounds of 69 at Baberton Golf Club on Tuesday to be the surprise leader with an aggregate of six-under-par 138 with one round to go in the BP Scottish Under-21 girls' open stroke-play championship.
Kelly, only 16 years old with a handicap of two and due to make her debut for Scotland in the girls' home internationals in Ireland from August 13 to 15, played the best competitive golf of her life in far from easy conditions.
With thunder and lightning storms raging almost everywhere in Scotland but at this suburb of Edinburgh, conditions were not easy with visibility steadily decreasing in the evening fog.
Miss Brotherton had five birdies in the morning and just to show it was no fluke she went out and repeated her three-under-par score with one fewer birdie. But for a bogey at the last, her only one of the round, Kelly would have started the final 18 holes with a two-stroke lead over the title favourite, Clare Queen (Drumpellier), winner of the British girls match-play and stroke-play titles last year and bang in form again as witness her victory in the Mackie Bowl 36-hole open event at Gullane on Sunday.
Clare, who will make her women's home internationals debut at The Berkshire next month, had rounds of 70 and 69 for 139.
Miss Queen's second round was a roller-coaster ride of birdies and bogeys. She had eight birdies and five bogeys, including shots dropped at the 13th, 15th and 17th.
Heather MacRae (Dunblane), last year's BP Scottish girls match-play champion, had been the first-round pacemaker with a 68 but she slipped back to third place with a second-round 75.
In fourth place on 142 is the improving Susie Laing (Troon Ladies and the University of San Francisco). She has been rock steady with a pair of 71s for two-under-par 142. If Susie can get more putts to drop, she could get mount a last-day challenge.
