LGU Elite Squad matches
The LGU Elite Squad played two 14 a-side matches against Cheshire and Lancashire last weekend
After holding the Cheshire Men's County team to a 3.5 to 3.5 match draw in the Saturday morning foursomes at Heswall, the ladies flagged in the singles and only took 5.5 points in the afternoon. The Cheshire Men won by 12 matches to 9.
The Elite Squad went on to play Lancashire Men at Royal Liverpool, Hoylake, on Sunday morning, but only took 3 points out of the 14 on offer. The Men won by 11 matches to 3.
Ireland's Claire Coughlan was the best of the Elite Squad, winning all three of her matches. Vagliano heroine, Danielle Masters, took 2 points, and Emma Duggleby 1.5. The Selectors must be scratching their heads wondering who to pick for the Curtis Cup team. Full results

You can probably tell that Colin is on holiday!!!

Scottish University Men's Team and Individual Championships
The Scottish University Men's Team and Individual Championships are being played at The Moray Golf Club, Lossiemouth this week. They are having communication difficulties in the clubhouse and there is no internet connection. The format is two leagues, played on a Round Robin basis, the winners play each other in the Final on Friday. I'm expecting to relay results on Thursday and Friday. Hope you can wait!!!
Here is the draw (Excel file) for the Men's Individual to be held on Wednesday. Don't fancy the 6:36 start!

Bulletin Board NOW WORKING!!!
I know it's hard to be the first to do anything... you wait around to see if others will follow.. and sometimes they do and sometimes they don't... and if they don't you feel a stupid fool... but will someone PLEASE try out the Bulletin Board?
I'm very concious that I'm a one-woman-band here at Kirkwood Towers. There are going to be times this season when I am not at my desk, and if you want to read the news you are going to have to write some of it yourself.
If you do want to use my site to relay news to others, then there are four ways of doing it..

  1. Register with me to become a Hot News correspondent. All you need is an Internet connection and a Browser. When I'm not around, this is the route that Colin Farquharson uses for his reports.
  2. I'll set up a County Website for any County that asks. All you need is an Internet connection and a Browser. It's like HotNews, but tailored to your County. Tell your County Secretary about it.
  3. Try the Bulletin Board. No registration necessary.
Current categories are Counties, General Discussion and Student Golfers.
Within Counties, each Scottish County has a forum. Click on your County name to get into your Forum.
If you want to start a new topic, click the New Topic icon, if you want to reply to a current message, click on the Post Reply icon.
I don't have a problem with what you want to put up.. it could be draws for competitions, results, the CSS, or anything else.
In General Discussion I've added Handicaps, a Suggestion Book and a Whinge Area. It's yours.. try it!!
Let me know of any other Categories or Forums you would like me to set up.
  4. email me or Colin with your News. The last resort!!! [but please do email if you can't do any of the other three]

There are many people out there who want to know what is happening..... and I'm not hot-wired to the keyboard. I do play golf myself!!!!

Kerry SmithKerry Smith (Waterlooville) finished a creditable third in the Sherry Cup with scores of 71, 76 and 71. Kerry played in the 2002 Curtis Cup and is a current England International player and previous holder of the English Ladies' Intermediate Championship and the Hampshire Champion.
The final round was abandoned due to incessant, heavy rain which robbed Kerry of the chance to catch Tania Elosegui of Spain, who was declared the winner on 211 and Anghern Nora of Switzerland with 217.
Kerry said "The Desert Springs training the week prior to the Spanish Championship has stood me in good stead and I am very pleased to have shot a couple of rounds 1 under par during my first championship this year".
The Sherry Cup is played annually at Sotogrande and attracts a high class field from across Europe both male and female. The England ladies' team finished fifth in the team event.

Futures Tour
Koreans 1 and 2 in the Futures Tour too
[try saying it! - Ed]
From a Futures Tour report:
OLDSMAR, Fla., March 28, 2004: It was a Korean sweep in women's golf this final-round Sunday. Jimin Kang of Seoul, Korea won her first tournament in two years on the FUTURES Golf Tour at Tampa Bay's Next Generation FUTURES Golf Classic. An hour after Kang had secured her win, compatriot Grace Park, the 1999 FUTURES Tour Player of the Year, sunk a six-footer to claim her first major LPGA title at the Kraft Nabisco Championship.
But Kang, like Park, had to earn her victory and had to win on the final green with a 30-second putt that felt more like 30 hours. While Park drained a six-foot birdie for her one-stroke win over FUTURES Tour alum Aree Song of Korea, Kang rammed home a 15-footer to edge Korean rookie Seon-Hwa Lee of Chonan, Korea, also by a single shot.
Heather Stirling (Bridge of Allan) slipped down the field to finish tied for 62nd spot and took home $178 in prizemoney. Fellow-Scot Linzi Morton (Tulliallan) failed ot make the cut.

Julie Forbes in joint fourth place in Pam Golding Ladies International
Scotland's Julie Forbes, pictured right, is one of five players in joint fourth place after Thursday’s second round of the Nedbank Women’s Golf Tour event at the Glendower Golf Club. Julie added a one-under 72 to her first round 73 for 145, and was four strokes behind the leader.
France’s Ludivine Kreutz struggled to a 74 for a total of five under par 141, but it was still good enough for a three-stroke lead over Ashleigh Simon and Finland’s Minea Blomqvist on a day when those near the top of the leaderboard all seemed to struggle with their games. Simon, one behind Kreutz overnight, signed for a 76 while Blomqvist, playing in only her second professional event, posted a 73.
Lesley Nicholson form Haddington just squeezed under the wire to make the cut on 157 with rounds of 78 and 79.

JULIE TIES FOR NINTH PLACE BEHIND SOUTH AFRICAN WONDER GIRL AMATEUR
Julie Forbes from Aboyne saved her best until last - a three-under-par third and final round of 69 for a level par aggregate of 216 lifting her up into a tie for ninth place finish in the Acer Women's South African Open at Royal Johannesburg & Kensington Golf Club on Friday.
Miss Forbes, a former winner of the French Open, had earlier rounds of 74 and 73. She earned 6,458 Rand for her performance which will give her a big confidence boost for the European Women's Tour campaign that lies ahead.
Ashleigh SimonIf Julie's last-day display was very good, what kind of superlatives apply to the shock winner of the title, 14-year-old South African amateur Ashleigh Simon who closed with a brilliant, nine-under-par round of 63 to come from eight shots off the pace at the start of the day to win with an eight-under-par total of 208 over her home course.
Ashleigh's earlier scores had been 71 and 74 and she did not seem a threat to Denmark's Carina Vagner who had a two-shot lead over the field with one round to go after rounds of 70 and 67.
The Dane matched the par of 72 at the last time of asking and failed by one shot to equal Miss Simon's clubhouse target of 208. Miss Vagner finished joint second with the fast-finishing Swede, Johanna Westerberg - 68 for 209 - and split the first two pro pay-outs to earn 32,500 Rand apiece.
Ashleigh's 63 equalled the lowest ever round on the South African Women's Tour. She is also
the first amateur to claim the title and the youngest player.
Miss Simon won the South African women's amateur stroke-play and match-play titles earlier this month. Not surprising she is rated the greatest female golf prospect ever to come out of South Africa.
A few weeks ago she became the first female to play in a men's pro tournament on the local Sunshine Tour.
"I was aiming for a 68 but this is my best score ever. I've had a few 67s but never a 63. You need to be at least 18 to turn professional and I won't be 15 until May 11. I think I'll hold off a few years after that. I still want to play in and win a few major international amateur tournaments so I might look at turning pro around the age of 20 or so. I'm not going to turn pto and go out there and miss cuts," said the youngster.
Ashleigh's flawless scorecard for the 5,769yd course contained birdies at the second, fourth, fifth, eighth, ninth, 11th, 14th, 15th and 17th. So accurate was her approach play that her longest putt all day was a 20-footer at the 11th.
[NB. We might get to see Ashleigh playing in Scotland if she enters the R&A Junior Open ar Kilmarnock Barassie in July just before the Open at Troon -GGK]

VIKKI FOURTH AFTER LAST-DAY WOES IN CALIFORNIA

Vikki Laing's bid for her first win as a rookie professional ended in disappointment. Starting the final round of The International tournament - the latest event on the West Coast Ladies Tour - at Yucaipa Valley, California - with a two-stroke lead after rounds of 69 and 70, the 23-year-old from Musselburgh sagged to a 77 for a 54-hole total of level par 216. Vikki's woes continued when she bogeyed the first hole of the sudden-death play-off. The three other players then decided to split the 1-2-3 prizemoney rather than continue in fading light. Miss Laing earned $900 dollars. Joellyn, Dodie and Alena each pocketed $1,800.
The other Scot in the field, Susie Laing from Troon, finished outwith the money - only the top 20 and ties earned a cheque. Susie scored 79, 73 and 75 for 11-over-par 227.

Hobday Golf Seals Deal for Spey Bay
Hobday Golf Company has acquired the prestigious Spey Bay Golf Links and Hotel operation with the support of equity investors from the United States and banking from Allied Irish Bank.
Neil Hobday, Chief Executive, and Alan Watt, Finance Director, will oversee the management of the resort and the implementation of exciting plans to restore the links and improve the clubhouse facilities.
Hobday made his mark in the world of golf by managing some of Europe's finest golfers with both Mark McCormack's International Management Group and Carnegie Sports International. Subsequently, he was involved with two of Scotland's finest golf courses. He led Lyle Anderson's operational team in the development of the Loch Lomond Golf Club, including initiating the World Invitational tournament, and advised on the opening of Kingsbarns Golf Links. Hobday is now ready to bring this world-class experience to projects initially in the UK and then overseas. He commented on the acquisition, "Spey Bay is Hobday Golf's first venture into this marketplace, acquiring what many golfers refer to as a hidden gem. The Spey Bay links course was the inspiration of the Duke of Gordon who, in 1907, asked Ben Sayers to mark out the course. He created a true links course with great natural beauty and character, which became a special retreat of the aristocracy for much of the last century.
"I believe that Hobday Golf's challenge is to remain true to the designer's ideas whilst improving the condition of the course and clubhouse in order to re-create a special golfing experience."
Watt, a chartered accountant with venture capital investment experience with NVM and Albany Ventures, commented on corporate development strategy, " Initially, I was fairly sceptical about golf projects. Although there are many superb golf courses in Scotland, few produce attractive returns for investors. I believe, however, that Hobday Golf is different. The unique business model identifies synergies between quality golf and luxury residential developments, which have the potential to reduce the debt requirement and create a more attractive risk and reward profile."

Gillian O'LearyPortuguese Championship
GILLIAN O'LEARY WINS PORTUGUESE TITLE

GILLIAN O'Leary staked a claim to make her full women's international debut for Ireland later this year when she won the Portuguese women's amateur international championship at Quinta de Cima course on the Eastern Algarve (on Sunday, March 14).
Gillian is 20 years old and a student at University College Cork as well as a member of Cork and Youghal Golf Clubs. She has been a member of Ireland's national training panels for the past couple of years - and this is her big breakthrough as a tournament winner.
She is studying Food Science and Technology at UCC, having received a grant from the college in 2002 and 2003.
She reached the semi-finals of the Belgian International Junior Championship last summer and represented Ireland in Moscow in the 2002 European Under-21 junior women's team championship.
Miss O'Leary is, by all accounts, a very hard working, dedicated player so one could say she earned the Portuguese title.
She qualified in third place for the match-play stages behind former English women's stroke-play champion Sara Garbutt from Ganton and Irish compatriot Tricia Mangan, the LGU Elite Squad player from Ennis.
Sara had rounds of 75 and 70 for 145 and and seven shots to spare over No 2 seed Tricia (77, 75) and Gillian (76 77).
Miss Garbutt, whose rounds helped England (302) to win the team title from Ireland A (304) and Ireland C (312), failed to carry on her fine stroke-play form in the match-play. In the semi-finals, Gillian O'Leary had a fine 2 and 1 win over Tricia Mangan in the first semi-final.
Former New Zealand junior champion Liz McKinnon, a Nairn Golf Club member who married a Scot and has lived in the Inverness area for the past three years, beat Eva Steinberger (Austria) 5 and 4 in the other semi-final.
Although she has won the Scottish Northern Counties individual title and helped Northern Counties to win the Scottish county championship finals last year, this has been Mrs McKinnon's best performance since she came over from New Zealand.
In the 36-hole Portuguese final, however, Gillian O'Leary was two up after 18 holes and won the tie by 5 and 4. She was only two or three over par for the 32 holes played.
Collated scoreboard . Leading qualifiers 145 Sara Garbutt (Eng) 75 70. 152 Tricia Mangan (Ire) 77 75. 153 Gillian O'Leary (Ire) 76 77. 154 Carolina Catanho (Por) 77 70. 155 Maria Vertechenova (Russ) 78 77.
Match-play later stages Semi-finals O'Leary beat Mangan 2 and 1, McKinnon beat Eva Steinberger (Aut) 5 and 4. Final (36 holes) O'Leary beat McKinnon 5 and 4.

BOOTH BATTLES BACK FROM LAS VEGAS NIGHTMARE
Scotland international player Wallace Booth from Crieff recovered from a nightmare start to score a five-over-par 77 on his competitive debut on the American college circuit.
Booth, older brother of "wonder girl" Carly, has been at Augusta State University since the autumn but, because he is still a teenager, the golf coach decided he would "save up" Wallace's four years of golfing eligibility and not introduce him in the team until now.
Competing in Southern Highlands Collegiate championship over the 7,440yd, par-72 Southern Highlands course, Las Vegas, Wallace started at the 10th hole and immediately ran up a triple bogey 7. At the 11th, he chalked up a double bogey 6 to be five over par after only two holes.
But Booth battled on and birdied the 13th, 16th, 18th, third and sixth in halves of 40 (for his first nine) and 37. He bogeyed the first, second, fifth, 15th and 17th apart from his triple and double bogey.
