Hannah claims scalp of Scotland
cap Sammy at Alyth before losing
at 20th to No 4 seed Jill Meldrum

Abernethy youngster Hannah McCook claimed the notable scalp of fellow-Northerner Sammy Vass from Tain in the first round of the match-play stages of the Scottish Under-18 girls golf championship at Alyth Golf Club today.
Sammy was a member of the Scotland quartet who finished a disappointing 17th of 19 in last week’s European girls’ team championship at Murcar Links.
Hannah required three more shots than her opponent in the qualifying stages but in head-to-head golf it was a different story and the photographer’s daughter won by 4 and 3 to set up a meeting with the No 4 seed, Jill Meldrum (Dullatur).
Meldrum cut down the giant-killing Miss McCook but it was quite a match which could have gone either way before Jill won at the 20th.
Samantha Leslie (Murcar Links), who qualified in 11th position, was beaten by another player from the Aberdeen area, Mhairi Johnstone (Northern). Mhairi won by 2 and 1.
Johnstone is through to the last eight. She beat Rachel Watton (Mortonhall,), the No 6 seed by one hole in the second round.
Top seeds Kelsey MacDonald (Nairn Dunbar) and defending champion Carly Booth (Comrie) made progress through to Thursday morning's quarter-finals with comfortable wins.
