Irish Ladies Golf Union launch new winter
competitive enterprise at district level

PRESS RELEASE ISSUED BY THE IRISH LADIES GOLF UNION

The Irish Ladies Golf Union will this weekend launch a new initiative to provide competitive golf for Ireland’s elite female athletes over the winter months.
The “ILGU Winterpros” is a round-robin tournament played over three weekends at Moyvalley in Co. Kildare. The five Districts nominate four players each while the students on Paddy Harrington Golf Scholarship at NUI Maynooth make up a sixth team.
Each team plays each other during the first five sessions with the final session’s opponents determined by rankings in the six-team table.
Commenting on the new initiative, Sinead Heraty, Chief Executive of the ILGU, said:
“We observed that successful teams like the Ryder Cup do not come together as a squad until the team is selected. Traditionally, we held national coaching sessions for squads but we will now hold district training sessions for 140 players with the top 24 competing against each other six times by next February.”
In addition to encouraging players to continue playing over the winter months, the initiative will aid Ireland’s top women golfers sharpen their game for the coming season. The second and third series of matches will take place next January and February.
