Baberton win Lothians inter-club title

for fifth time in past six years

Baberton, represented by Karen Marshall, Fiona de Vries, Fiona Hunter and Katherine Logan today won the Lothians inter-club women's foursomes tournament at Murrayfield Golf Club for the fifth time in the past six years.
They beat Kingsknowe 3 and 2 in the semi-finals with Lothianburn winning the other penultimate tie by 6 and 4 over hosts Murrayfield.
In the final Baberton were too strong for Lothianburn, beating them by 3 and 2 - despite a hole in one by Lothianburn's Ruth Brown at the 13th.

Today's results:
SEMI-FINALS
Lothianburn bt Murrayfield 6 and 4.
Lothianburn won their way iinto the final by beating hosts Murrayfield 6 & 4. Lothianburn’s first couple of Ruth Brown and Viv Curran out-putted Marjorie Townsend and Caroline Johnstone to be one up when the match concluded.
In the second match it was nip and tuck for the first 10 holes before Catherine Stewart and Anne Brownie won four holes in a row, including a birdie 4 at the 14th. Murrayfield’s Sarah Ledingham and Shona Simpson halved the 15th before Ann and Catherine closed the match with a win at the 16th.
Baberton beat Kingsknowe 3 and 2.
Baberton’s first couple, Karen Marshall and Fiona de Vries outplayed Kingsknowe’s Kate Rorke and Gill Petrie and won by a six-hole margin.
Baberton’s second couple, Fiona Hunter and Katherine Logan, found Kingsknowe’s Louise Fraser and Sheila Lyon tough opposition and their match finished with Kingsknowe two up.

FINAL
Baberton beat Lothianburn 3 and 2.
In the most horrendous weather – wind and pouring rain - Baberton’s Karen Marshall and Fiona de Vries quickly went one up at the third and two up at the fourth. The next few holes were halved and at the half way stage Baberton were one up.
After the turn, they stretched their lead, being halted temporarily by Ruth Brown’s hole in one at the 13th. They won all the remaining holes to finish seven up. They gave a display of near- faultless golf which was great to watch.
In the second match, Ann Brownie won the first hole, Baberton the second and the next two holes were halved in par. Lothianburn went in the lead at the fifth and stayed in the lead until the 10th where Baberton levelled.
Lothianburn took the lead again by winning 12 and 13 but the remaining holes were halved until the conclusion of the match at the 17th.
