Lucy Williams defends English open mid-amateur

championship at Denham next week

NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY ENGLISH WOMEN'S GOLF ASSOCIATION
Hertfordshire’s Lucy Williams will defend her title when the English open mid-amateur championship is played at Denham Golf Club, Buckinghamshire, next week from August 11-14. Lucy, 20, is enjoying good form, both in individual and team events. The Mid-Herts player tied for the recent Scottish U21 strokeplay championship, losing only in a sudden-death play-off. She was also in the Birmingham University ladies’ team which won the world student matchplay championship.
The mid-amateur championship – which starts on Tuesday – has attracted a full field of 64 players. Among them are Gloucestershire’s Charlotte Ellis, who won this title in 2006, Tara Watters of Middlesex, who was runner up in the English close championship in May, and Laura Collin of Bedfordshire, who reached the semi-finals of the British championship.
There’s a strong local contingent of 11 players, led by Buckinghamshire county champion Natasha Gough (Ellesborough) and including former English senior champion, Christine Watson (Beaconsfield).
The other Buckinghamshire players are: Anne Bridges and Christine Sparks from Mentmore; Rachel Drummond of Beaconsfield; Tilly Holder and Nicole Whitmore from Woburn; Clara Leathers, Fiona Thompson, Stephanie Gough and Jessica Burrows from Ellesborough.
The full field will play 36 holes of strokeplay qualifying on Tuesday, August 11, and the top 32 players will qualify for the matchplay stages. The final will be played on the morning of Friday, August 14.The mid-amateur championship is open to players aged 18 and over.
The championship course measures 6103 yards and has a par of 72.
