Lloyd catches Lewis for boys' title but Alex

Peters wins girls' crown by five strokes

NEWS RELEASE
Chris Lloyd (Sunningdale), playing as a sponsors' invite, caught the long-time leader, British boys champion Tom Lewis (Welwyn Garden City) over the final round to win the Abu Dhabi Junior Championship, presented by The Daily Telegraph, boys' title.
But Alexandra Peters (Notts Ladies) maintained her lead to win the girls' title.
In much cooler conditions, the finalists teed-off in the final round of The Abu Dhabi Junior Golf Championship, presented by The Daily Telegraph. They were all smiles on the first tee, looking forward to their last round at the magnificent Abu Dhabi Golf Club but the nerves were still jangling. The leaders in both the boys’ and the girls’ competitions had a four-shot lead over the rest of the field but with the quality of players underneath them, the overall winners were anyone’s guess.
Alex Peters, the overnight leader, picked up a birdie early on to extend her lead over closest competitors Sophie Godley and Holly Clyburn. However, a dropped shot at the par-5 eighth gave the other girls a look-in. A run of three birdies from Jess Wilcox put her into sole second place only three shots behind Alex.
However, Alex picked up momentum with birdies on 13 and 14 to put her at five under par, ahead of Jess by five shots. Both girls carded the lowest score of the week with a 69 (3 under par) and Alex was the overall winner by a convincing five shots. She will return next year to take part in the championship for the fourth time.
In the boys’ competition, Tom Lewis had two early birdies and looked like he could run away with it but a rare bogey on the sixth and a birdie from Chris Lloyd meant the gap was closed again to four shots.
Another bogey followed for Lewis at the eighth hole while Lloyd picked up a further shot. Only two shots separated them going down the ninth where Lloyd had yet another birdie. Lloyd was on a roll, and a wonderful iron shot into the 10th green gave him a chance of an eagle, but it grazed the hole. Lewis, who had missed the fairway could only record a par so the boys were level.
A missed par putt by Lewis at the 12th put Lloyd one in front of Lewis where he remained until the 16th where Lewis dropped another shot. So two shots in front with two to play, Lloyd had a little breathing space, only for him to bogey the par-4 17th, while Lewis made par.
A play-off loomed but in an unfazed manner, Lloyd put his third shot on the green and calmly two putted whilst Lewis could only manage a par.
Final rounds of 73 for Lewis and 68 for Lloyd meant Lloyd was took the title with the total of eleven under par, one shot ahead of Lewis.
