CLAIRE TUMBLES OUT OF CONTENTION IN FINAL
ROUND ON KIAWAH
ISLAND, S CAROLINA

Claire Starkie, a Georgia State University student from Skipton, West Yorkshire, tumbled from tied third overnight to a final placing of joint 18th in a field of 103 for the Palmetto Intercollegiate tournament at Oak Point Golf Club, Kiawah Island in South Carolina.
Claire, pictured right, shot 72 and 75 to be in contention with one round to go but a third-round 83 ruined all her earlier good work over the par-72, 5,933yd course.
In her final round she had triple bogey 7 at the fifth in her outward 41 and double bogey 6s at the 10th and 18th in 42 for the second nine. Claire's only last-day birdie came at the fourth.
Also finishing on the 230 mark was Hannah Burke (Baylor University) from Hertfordshire with scores of 77, 78 and 75. Hannah birdied the second, third and 15th in her last round but also ran up a double bogey 6 at the 10th.
Former Scottish girls Under-21 champion Kelly Brotherton (Tennessee-Chattanooga) from Tulliallan improved 16 places with a third-round 75, in which she had no birdies, 15 pars and three bogeys, for a total of 235 and joint 34th place. Her earlier rounds were 83 and 77.
English women's stroke-play champion in 2004, Sian Reddick (Baylor) from Folkestone also finished on 235 with scores of 78, 78 and 79.
The tournament finished too soon for Anna Scott (Georgia State) from Consett, Co Durham. She improved by leaps and bounds - 84, 78 and 74 for 236 and a share of 38th place.
Ireland's Sinead O'Sullivan (East Tennessee State) was just behind her with 80, 81 and 77 for 238 and joint 47th place.
Channel Islander Olivia Jordan-Higgins (Charleston Sothern) had scores of 82, 79 and 84 for 245 and a share of 69th place.
Lucy Gould (East Tennessee State), twice Welsh girls champion from Bargoed, scorted 84, 82 and 83 for joint 80th position on 249.
Nebraska's J C Stevenson was the individual winner by one shot with scores of 76, 70 and 70 for a two-under-par total of 216.
East Carolina (906) won the team event from Nebraska (909), the pair finishing well clear of third-placed Kansas State (925).
