Kirkcudbright Celebrates Wallace Rose Bowl Centenary

Lady Captain, Myra Dodds, has written to tell me about Kirkcudbright Golf club, which is celebrating the centenary of its oldest trophy, the Wallace Rose Bowl this year.

The Rose Bowl, which was presented by Provost Wallace in May 1908, is played as an Open Competion for Ladies on the first Saturday of August.
The first winner was Mrs Baxter from Dalbeattie in 1908 and the most recent winner was Alice King age 13 years, in 2007. A notable winner was Jessie Robertson, who won the trophy age 75 in 1983 when the trophy was also 75 years old.

Kirkcudbright Golf Club and the Ladies Section were founded in 1893. In the Ladies section there are 54 members, 7 country members and 3 girls.
Kirkcudbright Golf Club has had several notable members, including the well known artist Charles Oppenheimer, who was Captain 1938 to 1939. Mr A.C.Brown won Amateur Championship of Denmark in 1935 and in 1957 Edward Shamash played for the British boys against the Continent of Europe and also for Scottish Boys against English Boys at Pollock.
More recently, Addie Shamash was a member of the SLGA under 18 and under 21 Training squads, and won the under 23 Irish Ladies Championship in 2005.

Kirkcudbright Golf Course overlooks the town of Kirkcudbright, and has beautiful views over the Solway Firth. Myra says the golf course is in excellent order, under the expert charge of Greenkeeper John Houston and his team.

On the Rose Bowl competition day August 2nd, the club are having quite a few celebrations.
After the Rose bowl has been presented, there will be a finger buffet and a balloon race.

Lady Captain Myra adds, "Any ladies who would like to join us and play in the Wallace Rose Bowl would be made very welcome. Kirkcudbright G.C. has a really beautiful golf course, and we are proud of it."
