LOSE THRILLER TO ENGLAND AT WESTERWOOD

Scotland’s golfing schoolgirls drew 4 ½-4 ½ with their England counterparts but England’s schoolboys beat the Scots boys 10-8 in the annual schools international golf match, hosted this year by the Scots at Westerwood Hotel’s golf course, Cumbernauld today.
Scotland’s schoolgirls trailed 2-1 after the morning foursomes but singles wins by Rachael Watton (Firrhill High, Edinburgh), Lesley Atkins (Loretto School ), and Gabrielle Macdonald (Trinity Academy, Edinburgh ) plus a halved match by Eilidh Briggs (Gryffe High, Johnstone) enabled them to share the honours at the end of the day.
The situation was reversed in the boys’ match with the Scots leading 3 ½-2 ½ after the foursomes.
England made up the one-point deficit and some by taking the singles 7 ½- 4 ½
The contest did go to the last green in the last match. Jamie Arthur (Kinross High) needed to beat Matt Birch from Leicestershire for a 9-9 finish but in a tension-packed finish the English boy won by one hole to produce the 10-8 scoreline in favour of his country.
