NEWS FROM "LADY NORTHERN" EVENT AT COLUMBUS, OHIO

LOUISE STRUGGLES WITH A FIRST-ROUND 83

Borders player Louise Fleming (Minnesota) had an opening round of 83 in the Lady Northern women's college tournament over the Ohio State University's Scarlet Course at Columbus, Ohio.
It measures 6,201yd but has a par of 72.
Irish champion Martina Gillen (Kent State) could manage only a 79 and her compatriot and team-mate Karen Delaney, the Irish girls' champion, had an 81.
Leading the field at the end of the first round on the 70 mark were Janice Olivencia (Texas) and Alison Hanna (Ohio State).
Unusually, a second round was being squeezed into the first of two days' play.

ELGA NAME EMMA AND FAME FOR MIXED ENGLAND TEAM

THE English Ladies Golf Association have chosen their champion, Emma Duggleby (Malton & Norton), and another Curtis Cup player, Fame More (Chesterfield), to be their two representatives in the England mixed team of four to take part in The Spirit International, to be played at Whispering Pines Country Club near Houston from October 12 to 18.
The tournament is over four rounds of stroke-play so presumably the actual event will start on October 15.
Scotland's mixed team is champion Anne Laing (Vale of Leven), fellow Vagliano Trophy team player Clare Queen (Drumpellier) plus Walker Cup player Stuart Wilson (Forfar) and Andrew McArthur (Windyhill), the Scottish men's amateur champion of last year.

LATER NEWS FROM DICK McGUIRE COLLEGE TOURNAMENT

TOURNAMENT NEWS FROM US COLLEGE CIRCUIT

HEATHER AND JENNA TOIL ON DEBUTS FOR SAN DIEGO STATE

Heather MacRae and Jenna Wilson were struggling to make an impact on their debuts for San Diego State in the Dick McGuire women's college tournament over a par-73 course measuring just over 6,000yd at Albuquerque, New Mexico.
They were sharing 66th place on the 160 mark after two rounds.
Heather had a 77 and 83; Jenna an 81 and a 79.
Heather's second-round card had a double bogey at the short second and then a nightmare sequence of five successive bogeys to reach the turn in seven-over 47.
Heather dropped further shots at ther 11th, 15th, 16th and 17th with only a birdie at the 13th to relieve the gloom in an inward 39.
Jenna had two double bogeys in her first round and another one poppued up the long seventh in her second round. Prior to that the Strathaven player, winner of the Scottish Under-21 girls open title at Kilmacolm this past summer, had bogeyed the first, second and third. She did get one bogey, at the eighth, in 42 (five over par) to the turn.
Jenna shed further shots at the 10th and 13th but did finish on a high with a bogey 4 at the long 18th in an inward 37.
English girl Danielle Roseberry (New Mexico State) was back in a tie for 74th place after scores of 80 and 83 for 163.
Suzie Fisher (Tulsa) was the leader in the clubhouse at two-under-par 144 after rounds of 78 and a sizzling 66 but, barring late disasters, she was looking like filling third place at the end of the day.
Overnight leaders Kalin Downs (New Mexico) and Sweden's Karin Sjodin (Oklahoma State) were both heading for four-under-par 69s with only three holes to complete their second rounds. Both were four under par on the day standing on the 16th tee.
Kalin had a 70 in the first round; Kard a 71.

BRITISH SENIOR WOMEN'S OPEN AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP

PAM WILLIAMSON FADES AS CHRISTINA BIRKE
BECOMES FIRST SWEDE TO TAKE THE TITLE

Pam Williamson from Edinburgh had a disappointing final round of 86 to drop out of the top 10 and finish tied 18th behind six-shot winner, Christina Birke from Sweden, in the British senior women's open amateur championship at South Staffordshire Golf Club, near Wolverhampton on Friday.
Recent winner of the Irish senior women's open title, Pam from the Baberton club, had given herself a chance of a top-five finish with a second-round 75 but she fell away to a closing score of 86 for a final total of 245.
Christina Birke, runner-up to Ros Page in the championship at Longniddry 12 months ago, became the first Swedish winner of the title, maintaining her six-stroke overnight lead with a final round of four-over-par 77 for a final total of 226.
Sweden had five players in the top eight but England could claim the runner-up in Sue Pidgeon from Wrekin with a 77 for 232 and the third-placed competitor as well, Carole Caldwell (Sunningdale) with a 77 for 233.
One of the biggest recoveries of the tournament was the climb into joint 12th place by former champion and legendary Irish player, Mary McKenna. Mary had almost the whole field ahead of her after an opening round of 92.
Then she came soaring up the scoreboard with rounds of 76 and 75 for 243.
Judith Wheaton holed her tee shot at the sixth hole in the final round. It was her seventh ace in all and meant she automatially became one of the first members of the exclusive Ladies Golf Union Hole in One Club.
Judith, from High Post, finished with a 78 for 248.

POLL ON "SUDDENLY-IT'S-ALL-OVER-FINISH" TO SOLHEIM CUP

SEVENTY-FIVE PER CENT THINK TIES SHOULD
HAVE BEEN PLAYED TO A FINISH

Were you, like me, astounded by the way in which the last-day Solheim Cup action suddenly halted once Catriona Matthew had got the winning point?
What happened to the traditional match-play format in team events where every tie was played to a finish to give an overall result?
Golfalot.com have been running a poll among their users, asking them to vote on what the remaining matches should have done after Europe had sealed victory in the Solheim Cup?
The results were:

Ties should have been played to a finish: 57%
Concede victory to whoever was ahead: 23%

BRITISH SENIOR WOMEN'S OPEN AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP

SWEDE CHRISTINA GOES SIX SHOTS CLEAR AS PAM
WILLIAMSON MOVES UP INTO SEVENTH PLACE

Irish senior women's open champion Pam Williamson from Baberton has moved up into seventh place with one round to go in the British women's senior open amateur championship at South Staffordshire Golf Club.
Pam shot a second-round 75, two over par and a score bettered only by clear leader Christina Birke (73) from Sweden on the day.
Pam had an 84 in the first round so her 36-holke tally is 159.
Christina is one of three Swedish players in the top five and looks to have the title in safe keeping with a six-shot overnight lead.
Runner-up to Ros Page 12 months ago at Longniddry, Christina shaved three shots off her opening 76 and a 73 gave her an impressive tally of 149.
Sue Pidgeon (Wrekin) is her nearest rival on 155 after scores opf 80 and 75.
Carole Caldwell (Sunningdale) is on 156, one ahead of a pair of Swedes, Gunilla Nordgren and Viveca Hoff.
One of the biggest improvements of the day was achieved by the legendary Irish figure of Mary McKenna, a former winner of this tournament - and just about any other one you want to name in her many years at the forefront of women's amateur golf.
Mary had a 92 in the first round. Twenty-four hours later, Miss McKenna produced a splendid 76. If Mary can bottle the secret of how to make a 16-shot improvement between rounds, she can make a fortune!

PRESS RELEASE FROM SCOTTISH GOLF UNION

LOSS-MAKING GOLF CENTRE AT DRUMOIG PLACED IN RECEIVERSHIP

The Scottish Golf Union has today (Thursday September 25th) announced that the loss-making Scottish National Golf Centre in Drumoig, Fife, has been placed in receivership.

The centre, which was opened in 1999 to provide training facilities for Scotland’s amateur golf teams and coaching squads, as well as the general golfing public, has lost around £1 million over the last five years, and despite implementing a major restructuring operation during the past 15 months, the SGU believes it has been left with “no alternative” to receivership.

Alistair Low, chairman of Scottish Golf Ltd, the SGU operating company with responsibility for funding the centre, said: “We have made no secret of the fact that the project has been experiencing financial difficulties for some time, and whilst this is a step we very much regret, the level of losses at Drumoig is clearly unsustainable. We estimate that, had we not taken this decision, the cash shortfall for the year ahead would have been in excess of £310,000.

“The SNGC Board was appointed in May 2002 to seek a viable future for SNGC and has actively pursued all available strategies to achieve a financially acceptable solution. We believe we have taken all possible steps to try and make the centre viable, but the inescapable reality is that the scale of the facility and its location have combined to critically undermine its viability.

“We are in detailed discussions with the St Andrews Links Trust to ensure we have appropriate coaching and practice facilities available at all times. These would be facilities at the Links Trust’s site in St Andrews, and we are confident there will be minimal impact on the work the SGU carries out in coaching our various age group training squads from under 14 year olds up to our senior team, as well as junior groups from schools and clubs.”

Part of the annual per capita charge from each golf club member in Scotland (£6.50 in 2004) will continue to support the national coaching activities that have previously been based at the centre in Drumoig.

Ian Rae, the SGU’s national coach said; “When the centre was launched in 1999, it was certainly ahead of its time. Since then, however, a number of other similar facilities have been established, making quality coaching facilities available nationwide. I’m confident that the arrangements put in place by the SGU will enable a seamless transition for our developing golfers of all ages to ensure they continue to progress.”

Receivers KPMG have been appointed by the Scottish Golf Union and will determine the future for the centre, which received funding of £3.2 million from the SGU, and £1.2 million from sportscotland, with additional support of £150,000 from the R&A when it was built in 1998.

Discussions are ongoing with the Receivers regarding the position of the fifteen Scottish National Golf Centre Ltd staff employed at Drumoig.

MORE NEWS OF SCOTS GIRLS IN UNITED STATES

Sometimes it is difficult to obtain news of how the Scots girl golfers at the not so well-known (well, on this side of the Atlantic) colleges are playing.
Here's some information we have been able to dig up by trawling through the college websites.
Laura Walker from Nairn Dunbar transferred from McLennan Community College at Waco, Texas to the University of Arkansas Little Rock, where Fiona Gilbert from Carnoustie had already spent a year.
Both played in the UALR team that made the trip north to Madison, Wisconsin for the Badger Invitational, hosted by the University of Wisconsion.
UALR finished fifth in the women's team event and one thing you should always remember about American college golf or any sport is that great importance is placed on team performances and high finishes.
Laura Walker came 21st with scores of 77 and 85 for 162, two shots ahead of Fiona Gilbert, who tied for 26th place, with scores of 78 and 86.
The individual title was won by Allison Fouch (Michigan State) with 73 and 71 for 144.
Putting the scores of Laura and Fiona into perspective, they were not all that far behind the top UALR scorer at the tournament, Linda Svenssion who had 77 and 80 for 157.
Meanwhile, Emily Ogilivy from Perthshire has had two tournaments as a member of the Sam Houston State University team since she returned after the summer holidays.
Emily finished 10th in the Bobcat Invitational at New Braunfels, Texas (over "The Bandit" Course measuring 5,991yd with a par of 71). She had scores of 78 and 82 for 1670 - nine shots behind individual winner Ashlie Simmons, playing for the combined Texas A&M and Corpus Christi team which won the team event with 638, seven shots ahead of Sam Houston State.
McLennan Community College came eighth with 667 but no news of whether Sjavon Wilson from Murcar and Stephanie Crolla (Longniddry), who both enrolled at McLennan in August, played and, if they did, how they scored. But we'll keep digging.
Earlier Emily Ogilvy helped Sam Houston State to achieve another second team place. That was in the Nicholls State Colonel Collegiate touornament at The Bridges Golf Club, Bay Saint Louis, MS (I can never remember the American state abbreviations: Is "MS" short for Missouri or Minnesota? Answers on a postcard.
Birmingham Southern wont he team event with 611, 14 shots ahead of Sam Houston State.
Ashley Kelley (Texas State-San Marcos) won the individual tournament with 75 and 73 for 148. Emily Ogilvy came 14th with 79 and 77 for 156.
IF ANY OF OUR GIRLS OUT IN THE STATES ARE READING THIS, PLEASE E-MAIL US WITH NEWS AS SOON AS POSSIBLE AFTER YOUR TOURNAMENTS.

REGULAR NEWS FROM THE AMERICAN COLLEGE GOLF SCENE

JENNA AND HEATHER READY FOR SAN DIEGO STATE DEBUT

Jenna Wilson and Heather MacRae will make their competitive debuts for the San Diego State University women's golf team later this week.
The 2003-2004 season opener is the 25th Annual Branch Law Firm/Dick McGuire Invitational. The tournamend is hosted by Mountain West Conference rival New Mexico.
The 17-team field features all six MWC teams and six of Golfweek's pre-season top 25 teams, led by No. 4 Oklahoma State. The 54-hole tournament is held Thursday-Saturday at the University of New Mexico championship course.
San Diego State University women's head coach Felicia Brown says:
"I am very excited about this season. This is the strongest team I have seen here. We have some excellent newcomers to go along with several key returnees and we have been playing some good golf.
"However, we are a very young team so we have to see how we handle tournament pressure away from home. If we can handle it, we can do some damage.
"The New Mexico tournament will be a good test for us as there is some great competition, so we will see from the start how we measure up and hold up under tournament conditions against quality teams."
Find out how Heather and Jenna fare in this tournament and throughout the college golf season in the United States by logging on to kirkwoodgolf regularly.
Of course, Scots are not the only players from Britain on the American college circuit. There are almost as many Irish players ... well, not quite.
And there are two English players I stumbled across as I was trawling the college golf websites tonight. Danielle Roseberry from Sunderland is at New Mexico State while Gemma Harris from Sheffield is at Florida State.

ALL THE RESULTS FROM PGA WEE WONDERS' GRAND FINAL

LESLEY ATKINS FROM MINTO IS
SCOTLAND'S ONLY WINNER

ENGLISH youngsters dominated the leading positions in the Grand Final of the PGA Wee Wonders Open Golf championship, staged in association with the Golf Foundation, over the Balgove Course, St Andrews
The four boys' age groups were all won by competitors from England. Three of the four girls' age categories were also won by English entrants.
The odd girl out was Lesley Atkins from Minto Golf Club, near Hawick. Lesley won the 7 and 8 years' section in a close finish with Aimee Wilson from Branston, Staffordshire. Both used their allotted 36 shots to get as far as the ninth green. Lesley was closer to the hole.
Eight-year-old Ewan Scott, one of the two locals among the 72 qualifiers for the Grand Final, lost out in a "photo finish" for first place in the boys' seven to eight years' category. Both he and Aaron Rai from Wolverhampton holed out on the 10th green with their 36th shot. Aaron won the tie-breaker.
Lauren Whyte (7), the other St Andrews competitor, finished sixth in her age group.
The Grand Final was the culmination of six months of qualifying rounds and nine regional finals in Scotland, England, Ireland and Wales.
Started in 1995 by Alasdair Good, now head professional at Gullane, the PGA Wee Wonders tournament has grown into the biggest golfing event in Great Britain & Ireland for children from the ages of five up to 12 years.
"We are thrilled to support this event which promotes golf at its grassroots level," said Sandy Jones, chief executive of the PGA.

WASHINGTON, STANFORD GIRLS AT GLENEAGLES

LYNN KENNY AND CLARE QUEEN LEAD
BUT AMERICANS BEAT SCOTTISH SQUAD

A Scottish Institute of Sport squad produced the two highest individual points totals but, as a team, they lost to American colleges Washington and Stanford in a girls' team stableford golf competition over 36 holes at Gleneagles.
The University of Washington totalled 370pt, one more than Stanford with the SIS team scoring 349.
Because of NCAA golf regulations, Washington and Stanford were technically not permitted to play AGAINST each other - only against the SIS team so that the official results were:
Washington beat SIS 370-349 and Stanford beat SIS 369-349.
The first round was played over the Queen's Course and the second over the PGA Centenary Course. The best six cards each day counted for the team total.
England junior international Alex Marshall, a golf scholarship student at Stirling University, was "transferred" to the Washington team for the weekend because of an imbalance in numbers - and she finished up being their leading scorer with 66pt!
Lindsey Morgan, Washington's second top scorer with 65pt, had a hole in one at the par-3 fourth hole (177yd) on the PGA Centenary Course.
The highest individual stableford points aggregate for the two rounds was achieved by Lynn Kenny, the former Scottish champion and Great Britain & Ireland team player from Stirling University and Dunblane.
Lynn scored 31pt over the Queen's Course and 37pt over the PGA Centenary Course for a very good total of 68pt.
Vagliano Trophy team-mate Clare Queen (Drumpellier) was only one point behind her with rounds of 33 and 34 for 67pt.
The visit by the American colleges' girls teams and their coaches was arranged by Steve McNally, the SIS high performance golf coach, as a sequel to a fact-finding trip he made earlier in the year to Stanford University, Tiger Woods' alma mater.

Scoreboard

370 WASHINGTON: 66 Alex Marshall (31-35), 65 Lindsay Morgan (30-35), Paige MacKenzie (31-34), 58 Amber Prange (29-29), 59 Ashley Bickerton 30-29), 57 Sung Ea Lee 29-28, 55 Courtney McCraken (28-27), 50 Amy Wang (26-24).

369 STANFORD: 64 Jenni Tangtiphaiboonta (31-33), Kelly Husted (31-33), 63 Stephanie Lue (31-32), 61 Wendra Liang (31-30), 60 Kim Kouwabunpat (26-34), 57 Angela Rho (26-31), 53 Lauren Todd (27-27), 42 Jenna Seki (21-21).

349 SCOTTISH INSTITUTE OF SPORT: 68 Lynn Kenny (Stirling Univ) 31-37. 67 Clare Queen (Drumpellier) 33-34. 60 Steve McNally (SIS High Performance Coach) 31-29. 53 Adi Shamash (Kirkcudbright) 24-29. 52 Olivia Briggs (Stirling Univ) 24-28. 49 Dawn Dewar (Monifieth) 23-26. 48 Elaine Cuthill (Lanark) 21-27, Gemma Webster (Hilton Park) 24-24. 47 Kylie Walker (Buchanan Castle) 19-28.

AMATEURS – MEET AT WENTWORTH FOR CHAMPIONSHIP FINAL

The UK’s leading nutritional health supplements company, Health Perception is delighted to announce that the final of the inaugural Health Perception Ladies’ Golf Championship of Great Britain & Ireland, run in association with The Ladies’ Golf Union, will take place on Wentworth’s famous East Course on Thursday September 25th.

Olympic Gold Medallist swimmer, David Wilkie MBE, the founder and Managing Director of Health Perception, and LGU President, Sue Johnson, will be starting the thirteen talented lady amateurs on their final quest for glory at 12:30pm. The winning presentation will be made by David Wilkie at around 5:45pm.

The 13 finalists, who come from across Great Britain and Ireland, qualified for this new championship by winning both their club qualifying competition and one of the 13 regional finals that took place throughout July and August.

David Wilkie said; "Almost half the golf clubs in the UK and Ireland contributed to the initial entry of some 20,000 lady club players, which makes reaching the Grand Final a massive achievement in itself."

The Wentworth East Course was the venue for the historic match that led to the creation of the Ryder Cup, and was the home of the first Curtis Cup match and is considered one of the finest inland venues in Great Britain & Ireland.

After the competition, the players will be welcomed to a Presentation Dinner in the plush surroundings of the Wentworth Club at which the winner will receive a specially commissioned bronze trophy from David Wilkie, which will be displayed in the new Champion’s club for the next 12 months. All the finalists will be supplied with a gift of golf clothing from Pringle of Scotland, the official suppliers to the Health Perception Ladies’ Championship. In addition, rugby international and keen amateur golfer, Lawrence Dallaglio, will attend the Presentation Dinner only six days before heading off to the Rugby World Cup in Australia.

David added: "This new championship has captured the imagination of many lady golfers and will be a tough competition to win. We are already working with the LGU to make next year’s event even better."

The finalists are below, and are all happy to be interviewed.

SCOTTISH WOMEN'S COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP FINALS

NORTHERN COUNTIES SWEEP TO SCOTTISH TITLE

NORTHERN Counties completed a clean sweep of the opposition with a 7 1/2-1 1/2 victory over Borders to win the Scottish women's county golf championship with something to spare at Scotscraig Golf Club, Tayport on Sunday
The Highland lasses, sponsored by Gleaner Oils, were on course to regain the title they last won at Alyth in 2000 when they opened the three-day programme with a 5-4 win over joint favourites Fife after losing the foursomes 2-1.
That was the key match of the tournament. Northern Counties went on to beat Ayrshire 7 1/2-1 1/2 on Saturday and a third and final victory was never in doubt.
"We had a very good mixture of experience and new blood," said skipper Anne Ryan. "Five of the team who won the title for Northern Counties three years ago were still available and that made a big difference. We had strength in depth."
Most successful players for Northern Counties, who were sponsored by Gleaner Oils, were international Lesley Mackay (Stirling University & Royal Dornoch) and Jenny Milne (Elgin), both of whom gained 4 1/2pt out of six.
Fife finished runners-up with wins over Borders (7 1/2-1 1/2) on Saturday and Ayrshire (7 1/2-1 1/2) yesterday.
Fife had the player of the tournament in former Scottish champion Elaine Moffat who won all six of her ties. Team-mate Jocelyn Carthew ran her close with five wins out of six.
Borders came third while Ayrshire, who were unable to field the line-up that won the West Division title for the first time in more than 30 years earlier in the season, were wooden spoonists.

Vikki Laing's fledgling career as a rookie professional took a big step forwards in California on Saturday when she was one of 30 qualifiers for the LPGA Tour Final Qualifying School at Daytona Beach, Florida in October.
Vikki shot rounds of 72, 75, 71 and 73 for a total of three-over-par 291 in the second and last eliminating competition at Mission Hills Country Club at Rancho Mirage.

Sweden's Mikaela Parmlid, who, like Vikki, has spent the last four years playing the American college golf circuit, was the No 2 qualifier with 285.
Danielle Masters, the England amateur international player from Maidstone Kent - a Great Britain & Ireland team-mate of Vikki in the Vagliano Trophy match at Co Louth at the end of July, finished with a great round of 68 to be tied for 10th place on 290 after earlier scores of 70, 75 and 77.
