KRYSTLE MATCHES PAR OF 72 IN
FIRST ROUND OF TAR
HEEL INVITATIONAL
Judging by her first-round score of a par-matching 72 in the Tar Heel Invitational today at Chapel Hill, North Carolina, it looks as though Krystle Caithness has now settled in at Georgia University.
The Cellardyke teenager deviated from par only four times over the UNC Finley course which measures 6,285yd. She bogeyed the sixth but birdied the ninth to be out in level par 36. Then she birdied the long 13th but bogeyed the short 14th in coming home in par 36.
That put her in joint seventh place in a classy field.
Michael Cavener (Tulsa) leads the field with a four-under-par 68 in the three-round event which will finish on Sunday.
American Curtis Cup ace and top-ranked college player Amanda Blumenherst (Duke) is only one shot ahead of Krystle with a 71.
Former Irish girl champion Danielle McVeigh (Texas A&M) finished with a 75 after birdieing the fourth and fifth. She had bogeys at the eighth, 122th, 14th, 16th and 18th after that great start. She is sharing 21st place in the field of 93.

SOPHIE PULLS FIVE STROKES CLEAR OF
MADRID LADIES MASTERS FIELD

FROM THE LADIES EUROPEAN TOUR WEBSITE

Sophie Gustafson set herself up for a second victory in three weeks when she extended her lead after the second round of the Madrid Ladies Masters at Club de Golf Retamares.
The Swede, who won the De Vere Ladies Open at The Carrick on Loch Lomond a fortnight ago, chipped in for an eagle 3 at the 18th to pull five strokes clear of her nearest challenger, Martina Eberl of Germany.
Gustafson carded a second successive 66, seven-under-par, for a 36-hole total of 14-under-par in the 54-hole tournament. She carded seven birdies, two bogeys and an eagle. At the 18th she hit a superb drive and a four-iron just right of the green before chipping in.
“I actually thought that I played better yesterday but obviously the eagle helped my score,” said Gustafson, who has enjoyed three solid weeks in Europe, having also finished second to Laura Davies in Austria last week.
“Like I said yesterday, you’ve got to hit the fairways here and if you do you can set yourself up for some birdie opportunities.”
Her closest challenger Eberl also performed admirably well, carding a five-under-par 68 to finish on nine-under-par. She birdied the last two holes. Martina has never won on the Ladies European Tour.
“I came here to play well and today I had nine birdies, a double and two bogeys. Tomorrow I’ll just keep trying to hole the putts," she said. "I just had 23 putts and hit 10 greens so I had a good short game going in today. The plan for tomorrow is to stay calm and enjoy it. I’m probably going to play with Sophie and she’s a great player. I’ll just try to enjoy the atmosphere.”
Eberl’s start was phenomenal, birdieing four holes in a row from the third. Although she could not quite reproduce the scoring fireworks on the back nine, she finished strongly with birdies on the last two holes.
Denmark’s Iben Tinning signed for a flawless 68 which took her into a share of third with Sweden’s Linda Wessberg, who carded a 71. British players Becky Brewerton (68), Lisa Hall (68), Lora Fairclough (69) and Laura Davies (69) shared fifth place on six-under-par.
Davies was presented with a cake and champagne at the end of her round, to celebrate her 44th birthday.
“I played well today. Four under was the absolute worst score I could have had so I’m pleased and disappointed in different ways,” said Davies, who won her 68th title in Austria last week. “If I could have shot four or five better, which I should have done, it would have been nicer, but four-under-par is a good round again. I just keep playing consistent golf.”
Marta Prieto and Tania Elosegui were the highest placed Spaniards on five-under-par and they shared ninth position with Joanne Mills, this year’s Wales Ladies Championship of Europe winner from Australia.
Catriona Matthew, the only Scot in the field, repeated her opening 71 for a four-under-par tally of 142, which puts her in joint 12th place - 10 behind the leader, but only five behind second-placed Eberl - with one round to go.

PGA MASTERS IS ICING ON THE CAKE FOR

ALGARVE’S FINEST PRIVATE GOLF DEVELOPMENT

Andre Jordan’s luxury apartment development - The Residences - has the spotlight shining upon it in October as the PGA Portugal Masters Golf Tournament takes place on its doorstep at The Victoria Clube de Golfe, in Vilamoura, Algarve.
The Portugal Masters, a new PGA tournament, will be held over four days – 18-21st October 2007 at The Victoria. The PGA, who are great fans of the three-year-old course, were greatly impressed by the success of The World Cup of Golf which was held at Victoria in 2005. The Victoria course is set to be a regular venue for the European Tour.
The Residences, pictured above, has been designed with the discerning golfer in mind. Reserved starting times and generous discounts on green fees are available on the five famous Vilamoura golf courses (Victoria, the Old Course, Pinhal, Laguna and Millennium). These golf concessions are to be made available to owners and guests staying at The Residences. They include:

*Owners shall be four nominated persons for a two-bedroom apartment and six people for a three-bedroom apartment. Owners will be entitled to these special conditions at any time of the year whether they are occupying their apartment or not.
*Guests shall be any such person occupying an apartment at The Residences whether as a guest of an owner or renting. Guests will only be entitled to these special conditions when they are occupying an apartment at The Residences.
*Owners will benefit from a discount of 50% off the published full green fees and equipment (buggies, trolleys, etc…) at all five Vilamoura courses.
*Guests will benefit from the full wholesale discount rate which varies throughout the year. It is, however, never less than 25%.

Currently under construction, already 110 out of 145 apartments have been sold off plan. André Jordan, Portugal’s leading property developer, has combined high quality workmanship and attention to detail on the development. His commitment to long term investment value for his clients has turned both Quinta do Lago and Vilamoura into internationally successful resorts.
Prices for a Luxury T2 - two-bed apartment are currently from €495.000 to €725.000 and T3 - three-bed apartments from €565,000 to €825,000. Full furniture packs at €25,000 for a twobed and €30,000 for a three-bed are available.

Jeff Hart, Sales Director for The Residences says: “We expect to sell all the remaining 35 apartments by November 2007. With capital appreciation for this type of property running at up to 10% pa, the apartments can be expected to be around 20% more when they are completed early in 2009.

With comparable properties in Quinta do Lago and Vale do Lobo selling at prices in excess of 35% above ours, there is plenty of room for good appreciation in the future”.

All property owners can take full advantage of The Residences’ Rental Scheme which is operated on site. The Residences golf concessions maximise the number of weeks' rental achievable throughout the year. The peak seasons for golf are Feb-May and Oct-Nov. This fits in perfectly with the peak summer beach season, to maximize occupation.

Jeff Hart says: “We confidently expect an average of 40 weeks' rental per annum, for owners who wish to maximize their rental income. Our studies show this would produce a net return of approximately €20k for a two-bed, and €25k for a three-bed apartment. These figures are net of all running costs, including rental commission, condominium fees and council tax.”

The Residences has also attracted a quality mortgage offer. BBVA Bank will finance up to 80% of the purchase price. They will also finance up to 40% of the deposit and stage payments on an interest only basis, plus lend 80% until 2011 at interest only as well.

SAMANTHA HEAD LOOKING GOOD FOR LPGA
FINAL Q SCHOOL BUT KIRAN NEEDS A
SUB-70 FINISH TO HAVE A CHANCE

England's Samantha Head shot a third-round three-under-par 69 to consolidate her position in the leading six going into the fourth and final round of the LPGA Sectional Qualifying School at Plantation Golf & Country Club, Venice in Florida.
On four-under-par 212, Samantha is well placed to make the top 30 who, after Friday's final round, will advance to the Final Q School at Daytona Beach.
Compatriot Kiran Matharu is not so well placed. She is tied for 51st place on 223 although her third-round 73 was her best score so far this week and she could yet make it if she can have a fourth-round score in the sub-70 category.
Na-Yeon Choi of South Korea leads for the third consecutive round following a 71 to be in the pole position on eight-under-par 208. Compatriot Hee Young Park trails Choi by two shots after firing a 4-under-par 68 in the third round. Park is 6-under-par 210 after three rounds.
Choi led by three shots following the second round and held that lead through the front-nine on Thursday, where she played bogey-free golf with two birdies, including a 20-foot birdie putt on hole number 3. She had birdies on holes 8 and 14, but bogies on holes 10 and 16 dropped her to 1-under 71 (67-70-71=208) for the day, two shots ahead of fellow South Korean Park.
“I didn't play bad today,” said Choi, following the round. “It was a steady day.”
The 19-year-old Choi has won on the Korean LPGA once in each of her four years on the tour, including a three-stroke victory two weeks ago at the Shinsegye Cup KLPGA Championship.
“I have led since the first round, but I don't want to concentrate on winning,” said Choi. “I don't want to think about being on top. I just want to try some things.”
Park, who was fifth entering the third round, carded birdies on holes 4, 7 and 8 with a bogey on hole 5 to make the turn at 2-under for the day. She had birdies on holes 10, 13 and 14 with a bogey on 13 to finish the day at 4-under 68 (69-73-68=210).
“I didn't think about (getting to) 6-under, I just try to shoot under par,” said the 20-year-old Park. “I had a good putter today and lots of confidence.”
Park has played the LPGA's South Korean tournament every year since 2004. In 2005, she finished tied for fourth when the tournament was called the CJ Nine Bridges Classic. That same year, she was named Rookie of the Year on KLPGA. Park has three victories since joining the tour. She is fifth on the 2007 KLPGA ADT CAPS Money List following three second place finishes in 11 events.
“I just try to play safely tomorrow to get on to the final stage,” said Park. “Winning tomorrow doesn't matter to me because the top-30 make it.”
Anna Grzebien of Rhode Island and Angie Hill of Ohio are tied for third place at 5-under-par 211, three-strokes off the lead.Grzebien, the 2005 NCAA Division I Women's Golf Individual Champion, used two birdies and a bogey to shoot 1-under 71 (71-69-71=211) in the third round. The 2007 Duke graduate was tied for second entering the third round. This is the 22-year-old's first attempt at qualifying for the LPGA Tour.
Hill, a co-medalist at the Venice qualifier in 2006, was 2-over-par through 14 holes before making birdies on holes 15, 17 and 18, where she rolled in a 50-foot birdie putt to move to 1-under 71 (68-72-71=211) for the day. The 2006 Southern Conference Player of the Year at the College of Charleston, Hill played 19 events with 11 cuts made on the Duramed Futures Tour in 2007.
The top-30 players and ties at the end of 72 holes will advance to the LPGA Final Qualifying Tournament at LPGA International in Daytona Beach, Fla., Nov. 28-Dec. 2. The Venice qualifier is the second of the LPGA Tour's two sectional qualifying events in 2007. The first was at Mission Hills Country Club in Rancho Mirage, Calif., two weeks ago. The top-30 finishers and ties from each qualifier join current LPGA Tour members attempting to improve their status and the players who finished sixth through 15th on the final 2007 Duramed Futures Tour money list at the LPGA Final Qualifying Tournament.

SCOTS SENIOR WOMEN DRAW
WITH WALES, EDGE SECOND
PLACE BEHIND ENGLAND

England continued their monopoly of the senior women’s home internationals title at Royal Tara Golf Club, County Meath in Ireland.
They duly won the championship for a fifth year in a row by beating Ireland 5-2 in their final match today. No other country has won the title since the over-50s tournament was introduced in 2003.
Scotland drew 3 ½-3 ½ with Wales but pipped them by half-a-point for second place on a comparison of the individual games won records.
After sharing the foursomes 1-1, Pamela Williamson was Scotland’s only winner in the singles, giving the Baberton player three wins out of three, all achieved in singles’ play.
But the Scots who did not win gave gritty performances
Lorna Bennett (Ladybank), Scotland’s top player with 4 1/2pt out of 6, had a titantic struggle with the Welsh ace, Vicky Thomas, which ended all square.
Lorna, pictured above, was two up after nine but then lost the 11th, 12th and 14th. She stopped the slide by squaring the match at the 16th and then halving the last two holes.
Fiona De Vries (St Rule) halved her match against Janet Doleman who won the 14th and 15th and then halved the last three.
Helen Faulds (Douglas Park) came from behind to get a square match with Jean O’Connor. Helen won the 15th to level matters and then the last three holes were halved.
Fiona Hunter (Baberton) went down by one hole to Denise Richards who gained the edge in a tight tie by winning the 17th and 18th.

SAMANTHA HEAD, KIRAN
MATHARU SURVIVE LPGA
PRE-Q SCHOOL CUT

Samantha Head survived the 36-hole cut with ease in joint 10th place on level par 144 as Na-Yeon Choi of South Korea carded a 70 in the second round on Wednesday to maintain the lead at the Venice LPGA Sectional Qualifying School at Plantation Golf and Country Club at Venice, Florida.
Samantha, pictured right, has had rounds of 71 and 73.
Former Curtis Cup player and English amateur champion last year, Kiran Matharu made it with nothing to spare - 74 and 76 for six-over-par 150 and a tie for 60th place. Seventy-three players with totals of 150 or better advanced to the third and fourth rounds on Thursday and Friday.
Choi, who led by one-shot after the first round, is now 7-under-par 137 entering Thursday's third round. She leads Angie Hill of Ohio, Anna Grzebien of Rhode Island and Leah Hart of Australia, who are each four-under-par 140 through two rounds.
LEADER AT SEVEN UNDER PAR
Choi, who played the 6,226-yard Panther Course, logged seven straight pars before a birdie on hole 8 to make the turn at one-under-par for the day. She made birdies on holes 13, 15 and 16 with bogies on holes 10 and 18 to move to 7-under-par (67-70=137) for the tournament.
“I didn't play as well as yesterday, but I tried to keep playing well,” said Choi. “So far, I've played well.”
The South Korean has won on the Korean LPGA Tour once in each of her four years on the tour, including a three-stroke victory two weeks ago at the Shinsegye Cup KLPGA Championship. She is currently fourth on the 2007 KLPGA money list after making the cut in all 12 of her starts this year with eight top-10 finishes.

“My experience on the KLPGA helps my confidence, but the golf courses in Korea compared to here are different; the grass, everything is different,” said the 19-year-old Choi. “I have played in some LPGA Tour events and it helped with experience. It helps me be confident.”
Hart, a two-year member of the Ladies European Tour, carded a bogey-free round of 5-under-par 67 (73-67=140). After starting on the 10th tee of the Panther Course, Hart made birdies on holes 15, 4, 6, 8 and 9, where she lipped out for eagle from 10 feet. Her 67 tied the tournament-low set by leader Choi during the first round.
“I played good golf today, didn't make any mistakes,” said the 26-year-old Hart, who has participated in the U.S. Women's Open on three separate occasions. “I hit 17 greens, and so although I had a good score, I left a lot out there. A lot of putts seemed to touch the hole but not fall in.”
Grzebien, the 2005 NCAA Division I Women's Golf individual champion, made birdies on holes 5 and 8 with a bogey on hole 9 to make the turn at 1-under for the day on the Bobcat Course. She rolled in a 40-foot birdie putt on hole 12 and also made birdie on 15 to finish the day at 3-under-par 69 (71-69=140).
“I hit the ball pretty well. It was a lot of fairways and greens,” said the 22-year-old Grzebien, a Duke graduate who also won three NCAA team championships at the school. “I'm going to try to go out there tomorrow and try to have fun and see how low I can go.”
Hill, who was one-shot off the lead after the first round, shot even-par 72 on Wednesday to remain in a tie for second place. The Ohio native, who started on the 10th tee of the 6,412-yard Bobcat Course, made birdies on holes 13 and 16 with bogeys on holes 12 and 14 to make the turn at even-par for the day. She made par on every hole on the back-nine to finish at 4-under par (68-72=140) through two rounds.
It's always a different ball game on the second day – more adrenaline, more nerves,” said the 24-year-old Hill, who tied for leading qualifier honours last year in Venice (Florida). “I scrambled more than I did yesterday. I made everything inside 10 feet that I had to. Yesterday I gave myself more opportunities, today it was more of a grind.”
The final two rounds will be played on the Bobcat Course.

Gibson Cup Full Report

FIRST TIME WINNERS OF 100 YEAR OLD GIBSON CUP

Report from Anne Brownie, Chair of Gibson Cup Committee
In near perfect conditions for golf, the Centenary of the Gibson Cup took place at the Braid Hills golf course over the weekend of 29th/30th September. The winners of Sunday afternoon’s matchplay final were Wendy Nicholson and Jennifer Henderson both from Broomieknowe GC. Wendy and Jennifer had the top score from Saturday’s qualification round. The final was a game of two halves with runners-up Norma Richmond and Ray Lynch (both Murrayfield GC) being ahead before a run of four holes in a row after the turn won by Wendy and Jennifer led to their first success in the Gibson Cup by a margin of 5 & 4.

More than 120 ladies (including many past winners) played in Saturday morning’s qualifying medal foursomes round. Reflecting the benign weather conditions and excellent condition of the golf course, competitors had to break the par of 72 to qualify for the matchplay stages of the Gibson Cup. To mark the Centenary, a second flight of matchplay was introduced which was won by Anne Stokes of Harburn and Jenny Syme of Bogside Irvine .Their opponents in this closely contested final were Jennifer Bryans and Helen Warnock (both Harburn).

In recent years pairings from Harburn and Lothianburn GC have featured strongly in the Gibson Cup. Although, unusually, no Lothianburn couple made the matchplay stages this year, the winners of the Consolation Salver were Ruth Brown and Christine Clements with 42 points, edging out fellow Lothianburn club members (and last year’s Salver winners) Catherine Stewart and Janet Begrie who had 40 points.

To mark the Centenary of the Cup presented by Lord Provost James Gibson in 1907, Bailie Alastair Paisley represented the Lord Provost’s Office at the Prizegiving. Bailie Paisley kindly presented prizes from tournament sponsors “The Ladies Golf Centre, www.golfing-lady.com” to the main prizewinners as well as all the special hole prizes sponsored by local businesses. After the Prizegiving a Centenary celebration was held at which this year’s competitors and past winners and committee shared their Gibson Cup experiences.

In summary, the weekend was an outstanding success with great golf, wonderful weather and fantastic fun – a fitting way to celebrate the first 100 years of the Gibson Cup.

STANFORD UNIVERSITY PLACE
RESTRICTIONS ON MICHELLE
WIE JOINING FELLOW
STUDENTS AT GOLF
Being a professional golfer at a university where all the student golfers have, until now, been amateurs, can cause problems as this article from the "San Francisco Chronicle" highlights:
Friday marks the second anniversary of the day Michelle Wie turned pro. Next week, on the same day she returns to competition at the Samsung, Wie celebrates her 18th birthday. These milestones would carry more gravity if her year on the golf course hadn't collapsed like a flimsy deck of cards.
Wie marked another milestone on Sept. 24, when she started classes at Stanford. She also began showing up at the college's practice range, swatting shots and mingling with players on the NCAA champion men's team.
Stanford University officials dutifully checked the rules, not exactly sure of the parameters when a freshman shows up after turning pro. They determined Wie cannot play or practise with the Cardinal men or women during their 20 hours per week of "organised or structured" team activities, according to men's coach Conrad Ray, but she could join Stanford players for informal rounds.

LPGA Sectional Qualifying Tournament

SOLID START BY SAMANTHA BUT KIRAN
NEEDS TO IMPROVE AT VENICE, FLORIDA

England's Samantha Head and Kiran Matharu shot one-under-par 71 and 74 respectively in the opening round LPGA Sectional Qualifying Tournament at the Plantation Golf & Country Club, Venice in Florida.
Samantha is lying joint 11th, four shots behind leader Na-Yeon Choi of South Korea.
Kira is joint 42nd, on the same 74 mark as another Ladies European Tour player, France's Gwladys Nocera.
Choi currently holds a one-stroke lead over Angie Hill of Ohio and Shayna Miyajima of Hawaii, who each shot 68 to tie for second place.
Choi, who began her round on hole 10 of the 6,412-yard Bobcat Course, made six straight pars to start her day. She birdied hole 16 to make the turn at one-under-par. Choi finished strongly, making birdies on holes 2, 4, 7 and 8 to end the day with a bogey-free 67.
The South Korean has won on the Korean LPGA once in each of her four years on the tour, including a three-stroke victory two weeks ago at the Shinsegye Cup KLPGA Championship. She is currently fourth on the 2007 KLPGA money list after making the cut in all 12 of her starts this year with eight top-10 finishes.
She missed the cut at both the US Women's Open and the Evian Masters.
Hill, who tied for medalist honours in Venice (Florida) last year at 2-under-par 286, fired a 4-under-par 68 to tie for second place following the first-round. Hill used birdies on holes 5, 6 and 9 to make the turn at 3-under-par on the 6,226-yard Panther Course. After a bogey on hole 10, Hill made three consecutive birdies on holes 11, 12 and 13. She made bogey on 15 before missing a six-foot putt on 18 for birdie to finish the day at 4-under 68.
“I played very steady to start,” said Hill. “I made some putts in the beginning and when I made the turn I thought, ‘let's go low.' I made three good birdies and then leveled off, but I was pushing myself.”
Hill played three years of collegiate golf for the College of Charleston, winning three tournaments and the 2006 Southern Conference Championship. She won 2006 Southern Conference Player of the Year honors after finishing the season ranked 20th in NCAA Division I. An Ohio native who recently purchased a home in South Carolina, Hill made 11 cuts in 19 starts on the Duramed Futures Tour this season, including a second place finish at the Jalapeno Duramed Futures Golf Classic in Texas.
Miyajima, who started on hole 10 of the Panther Course, used birdies on holes 12 and 14 and a bogey on 18 to make the turn at 1-under-par. She made birdies on holes 1, 6 and 7 to finish the day at 4-under-par 68.
“I think a lot of it was luck. A lot was skill too, but when you shoot an unbelievable round it has to be a little bit of luck,” said Miyajima. “I don't want to be too confident. I want to shoot the best I can tomorrow.”
A graduate of San Diego State University where she captained the women's golf team in 2003 and 2004, Miyajima has played 27 events on the Duramed Futures Tour in the past two years, making five cuts.
Adrienne Gautreaux of Texas, Hee Young Park of South Korea and Vanessa Brockett of California each finished the day tied for fourth place at 3-under-par 69.
Players are competing on both the Bobcat and Panther courses at Plantation Golf and Country Club, playing each of the courses once before the 36-hole cut is made following the second round.
The final two rounds, which will feature the low 70 players and ties, will be played on the Bobcat Course.

It will be its fourth different logo in the tour's 58-year history.
"We designed a logo that represents the power, strength and athleticism of our LPGA athletes, and with the use of the bold colours, highlights our international membership and global business," said LPGA Commissioner Carolyn F. Bivens.
"This new logo, pictured right, underscores the changes in women's sports and the LPGA in recent years, and communicates the LPGA's bright future."

IN THE SINGLES AT ROYAL TARA

Scotland lost 4-3 to title-holders England on Day 2 of the senior women’s home golf internationals at Royal Tara Golf Club, Co. Meath in Ireland.
Having lost the foursomes 2-0, the Scots made a brave fight of it by winning three of the five singles.

INVERKEITHING HIGH BOY SCORES DOUBLE
VICTORY AT DUNHILL SCHOOLS CHALLENGE

Many of the world’s leading golf professionals and top amateurs led the applause as the winners of the Alfred Dunhill Schools Golf Challenge were presented with their prizes at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship Welcome Party.
Colin Montgomerie and Hollywood stars Hugh Grant and Samuel L. Jackson were among those in the Alfred Dunhill Pavilion overlooking the 17th green on the Old Course as the presentations were made by Julian Diment, Marketing Director of Alfred Dunhill Ltd.
Angus Ritchie, aged 17, from Inverkeithing High School won the double as overall scratch winner and winner of the Senior Boy category.
The net category winners were Louise Smith and siblings Jenna and David Scott. Golf is obviously in their blood as their father is David Scott, Director of Golf at Kingsbarns, one of the three golf courses featured in the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship.
All contestants in the Alfred Dunhill Schools Golf Challenge, along with their parents and a school representative, will receive tickets for the final round of the championship on Sunday, where they will be invited to an exclusive golf clinic given by internationally renowned golf coach Robert Baker.
Baker said: “This is a superb competition which encourages golf in schools in the area. I am really looking forward to meeting these youngsters and working with them. If kids can get the right coaching early enough in their golf career it will help them enormously for many years to come. And there is always the chance that we discover a champion.”
Angus shot an impressive 79 gross in adverse weather conditions to take the overall scratch prize from a field of 110 from 18 schools from Fife, Tayside and Angus. The Alfred Dunhill Schools Golf Challenge was held on Sunday, June 24, and was decided by one 18 hole round of medal play over the testing Torrance Course at Fairmont St Andrews.
Aimed at encouraging school-aged golfers to enjoy the unique challenges of links golf the competition was played in four divisions, off handicap, in addition to the overall Scratch Prize.
The winners were:
Junior Boy: David Scott from Bell Baxter High School with a net score of 69.
Junior Girl: Louise Smith from Grove Academy with a net score of 79.
Senior Boy: Angus Ritchie from Inverkeithing High School with a net score of 71.

TOP JUNIORS OUT TO MASTER GLENEAGLES

Eighty of Scotland’s up and coming young junior golfers head to Gleneagles this weekend to tee up in the final of the 2007 Dunfermline Building Society Junior Masters, in one of the country’s top golf events.

Hoping for a shot at glory, fifty boys and thirty girls, each of whom has qualified from one of five regional finals across the country this summer, will line up at the superb Queen’s Course on Sunday 7 October to challenge for the two Junior Masters titles. The event kicked off back in April this year, with around 2,500 youngsters taking part in local qualifying from nearly 200 golf clubs.

Golfers from as far afield as Tain in the Highlands to Peebles in the Borders will come together to compete for the biggest participation junior golf event in the country. The Junior Masters is a handicap based event, meaning young golfers can compete alongside each other whether their handicap is 3 or 36.

Graeme Dalziel, Chief Executive of Dunfermline Building Society, is looking forward to Sunday’s grand final:

We have been delighted with the success of the Dunfermline Building Society Junior Masters in our first year of sponsorship with the Scottish Golf Union. The standard of play in the regional finals has been terrific which bodes well for the future of golf in Scotland.”

“It’s great to see so many different communities from across Scotland represented in the event which fits very well with the values of our company. Golf has become a much more accessible sport in Scotland and that’s one of the reasons Dunfermline Building Society became involved.” he added.

The youngsters will be eager to test their skills at the home of the 2014 Ryder Cup and The Gleneagles Hotel have been a supporting partner of the Junior Masters for the last five years. The Queen’s Course is one of the most naturally stunning settings in the country, and at 5660 yards will offers a fantastic challenge for the eighty boys and girls in the final.

Dunfermline Building Society are in their first year of a two-year partnership with the Scottish Golf Union, investing £100,000 into the junior game, much welcomed by the SGU’s Chief Executive Hamish Grey:

KELLY AND ANDREA NOSEDIVE BUT
COACH COLETTE CELEBRATES
ANOTHER CHATTANOOGA VICTORY

Golf can be a funny game – but Kelly Brotherton from Tulliallan and Surrey’s Andrea Downer won’t have been laughing at the conclusion of their latest tournament on the American women’s college circuit.
Both Kelly, a student at Tennessee-Chattanooga University, and Andrea Downer of Murray State University, were impressive winners of different college events a week or two ago.
They must have gone into the Great Smokies’ Women’s Collegiate tournament at Waynesville Country Club, North Carolina with high hopes at the weekend.
But what happened? Kelly shot 78-75 for nine-over-par 153 and a share of 31st place while Andrew had an even bigger let-down. She had scores of 81 and 80 for 161 and a joint 69th position in a field of 120 competitors.
So what went wrong? Perhaps the opposition was just that wee bit better in this one but the scores don’t indicate that. Elin Anderson (South Alabama) won the individual title with 67 and 74 for three-under-par 141 over a shortish course of 5,950yards with a generous par of 72.
Maybe that was the reason – the course was too short for both Kelly and Andrea to follow up their previous successes. It can happen.
Shirley Harvey (South Alabama) from Belfast finished joint sixth on 147 with 75 and 72. Channel Islander Olivia Higgins (Charleston Southern) had 72 and 77 for joint 15th place on 149.
Ann Marie Dalton (High Point), from Carlow, Ireland, scored 78 and 76 for 154 and 35th place.
One Scot who did have the biggest of smiles on her face at the finish was Colette Murray, who was appointed head women’s golf coach at Tennessee-Chattanooga University at the start of the year. She undertook the daunting task of restarting the college’s women’s golf programme after it had been in cold storage for more than a decade.
Great credit to Colette (pictured above), originally from Leith but brought up in Dumfries, for building a winning team from scratch in a matter of months. The UTC record so far – Played 2, Won 2.
UTC (591) won the Great Smokies’ Women’s Collegiate team title by one shot from Elon University (592) with South Alabama (599) third in a field of 24 teams.

A “never say die” performance by both Larne and Donabate third pairings of Gail McNabb with Barbara O’Neill and Deirdre Bardshaw with Patricia Morris enthralled spectators with a superb display of nip and tuck golf.
It was two hours after Donabate’s first victory that the Larne couple managed to secure the winning point on the 20th green.

LAURA DAVIES ENDS 13 MONTHS WITHOUT A
WIN WITH VICTORY IN VIENNA

FROM THE LADIES' EUROPEAN TOUR WEBSITE

Laura Davies produced a vintage performance to end a 13-month wait for a title at the UNIQA Ladies Open near Vienna in Austria today.
The 43-year-old from England added a final day six-under-par 66 to her previous rounds of 69 and 65 - (which was a new course record) – to claim her 36th Ladies European Tour title and her 68th in total.
Laura finished on 16-under-par 200 after 54 holes, four strokes ahead of Sweden’s Sophie Gustafson in second.
France’s Virginie Lagoutte-Clement (71, 69, 69) and England’s Kirsty A Taylor (72, 68, 69) finished tied for third on seven-under-par, while 18-year-old amateur Marina Kotnik was the highest-placed Austrian, finishing tied for 30th on one-over-par.
It was Davies’ maiden victory in Austria and her first title since the SAS Masters in Norway in August 2006. It was a win which also helped her to top the New Star Money List for the seventh time in her career.
Laura admitted it came as a welcome relief. “It’s nice. It was getting a bit late in the year. I’ve only got eight tournaments left so I had to win one.
“It’s massive, it’s massive. I just love winning trophies. It’s easy to say but I just love winning them and this makes it that there was only one year in the past 23 years that I didn’t win a tournament (2005) and that still wrangles me that I didn’t win a tournament that year.
“I love the golf course and that was one of the reasons I came back. I knew I could do well around here and here I am: I’m the winner.”
Davies started the day at 10-under-par with a one-stroke lead over Gustafson. The Swede drew level with Davies by birdieing the first hole but Davies responded immediately with a birdie of her own on the very next to regain the advantage.
The turning point came on the 384yd fifth. Davies completed the hole in regulation 4, while Gustafson dropped two shots with a double-bogey 6 to increase the gap to three strokes.
A birdie 3 on the seventh sent Davies four clear before a going one better than Gustafson’s birdie on the ninth by eagling it with a 20ft putt for a 3.
It was Davies’ second consecutive eagle on that hole and it put her five shots clear at the turn.
The lead was reduced to three shots after the par-3 10th, which Davies bogeyed and Gustafson birdied.
It was to be the only difference between the two friends as they matched each other shot-for-shot on the next seven holes, with a pair of birdies on 12th and 15th.
Davies’ victory was sealed on the final hole after Gustafson sent her second shot into the lake. Davies’ chip to an inch of the pin ensured she finished in style with a birdie to the delight of the Austrian gallery.
However, there was little in the way of a celebration by Davies. “The only time you really see people going mad is if it’s their first tournament or they hole a putt to win a tournament. You feel a bit silly dancing round the green with a four-shot win,” Davies said afterward.
The win helped her to forget missing the cut at the De Vere Ladies Scottish Open the previous week, although both tournaments featured weather delays. The Austrian competition was reduced to three rounds after heavy rainfall on Thursday.
Davies began her first round on Friday poorly and was three-over after four holes, having made a triple bogey on the newly-reconstructed dogleg 13th. Despite that she said: “I couldn’t have played much better this week. I was three-over after four holes in the tournament and I’m nineteen under since then over three rounds of golf so this was some good stuff this week.
“I played really well at The Solheim Cup. I dismissed Scotland last week as a bit of a one-off week where I missed the cut. I’m playing well.
“It was hard work today. I played really well and I had to. Sophie was always going to shoot a decent round,” she said.“Being paired with Sophie was the worst news I could have had. If there was one person I didn’t want to be paired with, it was her. She hits it as far as anyone. I was nervous, no question.”
Davies picked up a cheque for €37,500, and will go head-to-head with Gustafson again next week at the inaugural Madrid Ladies Masters.
Colin Farquharson writes:
Clare Queen shot a third-round 68, one of her best rounds of the season. She had 16 birdies and one double bogey over the 54 holes. In her final round she reached five-under-par 211 with birdies at the second, seventh, ninth, 10th, 14th and 15th. Clare bogeyed the 13th and 17th. Her cash prize amounted to 8,750 Euros.
Inverness-based New Zealander Liz McKinnon had one of her better finishes of the season - joint 12th on two-under-par 214 with rounds of 70, 70 and 74 to earn 3,771 Euros. Her late birdies at the 15th and 16th came just at the right time to boost her finishing position.
Lynn Kenny, after solid rounds of 72 and 73, sagged to a 77 for 222 and joint 59th place. The Archerfield Lnkis player birdied the ninth and 18th but had seven bogeys on her card. She earned 787 Euros.
