Irish Ladies Golf Union Press Release

PAT TURVEY PASSES AWAY

It is with deep regret that the ILGU has learned of the death of Pat Turvey, past secretary of the Union from 1984-2000.
Following the retirement of Ms Kathleen Callaghan in 1983, Ms Turvey picked up the Irish Ladies Golf Union’s administrative reigns in 1984, a post she held for almost 16 years. In addition to orchestrating the Union’s Centenary Celebrations in 1993, she oversaw the move of Headquarters to Clonskeagh Square early in her appointment and was key to delivering enhanced services to an ever-increasing vibrant membership.
A native of Clontarf, she will be fondly remembered by the Union membership as a role-model in the advancement of efficient administration and will be missed by her many golfing friends.

ROSEANNE AND KRYSTLE HOLDING
OWN AGAINST US COLLEGE ELITE

Scots teenagers Roseanne Niven (pictured left) from Crieff and Krystle Caithness (pictured right) from Cellardyke, Fife are tackling the elite of the American women's college golf circuit in the Stanford Intercollegiate tournament over Tiger Wood's old stamping ground in California - and holding their own.
University of California Berkeley student Roseanne, 18, and Krystle, also 18 and a freshman student at the University of Georgia, both returned first-round 73s over the par-71, 6,089 lay-out.
Roseanne, starting at the 10th, bogeyed the 10th, 13th, 16th and first but she had birdies at the 11th and 2nd.
Krystle also started at the 10th and it was a bad hole for her, costing her a double bogey 6 but she birdied the short second and long 16th before dropping another shot at the 18th. The first hole of her second nine was also costly for the Great Britain & Ireland international player. She ran up a double bogey 7 at the long first but then got a birdie 4 at the longth seventh and a birdie 2 at the short eighth before finishing her round with a bogey at the ninth.
The Scots are a highly creditable joint 15th in a field of 93 players which includes most of the top players on the American women's college circuit.
American Curtis Cup ace Amanda Blumenherst justified her No 1 ranking a sparkling five-underper 66 to lead by two shots from Mari Chun (Stanford), playing over her home course.
English women's stroke-play champion Jodi Ewart from Yorkshire, a second-year student at New Mexico University, was one of a bunch of players in third place on 69.

Former British girls championship winner at Lanark, Azahara Munoz (Arizona State) from Spain) is joint 11th on 72.

Sweden's Anna Nordqvist (Arizona State), also a former British girls champion and beaten finalist in the 2006 and 2007 British women's championships, had a bad day at the office by her own high standards. She is back in a tie for 39th place on 76. Her round included a double-bogey 5 at a short hole.
The tournament is over three rounds.

Heather MacRae, Vikki Laing miss out in Italy

JENNA WILSON QUALIFIES FOR LADIES EUROPEAN
TOUR FINAL QUALIFYING SCHOOL NEXT WEEK

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Scottish amateur champion Jenna Wilson was the only Scot at this week's LET Q School Pre-Qualifier to make it through to the Final Q School at Le Fonti Golf Club, Italy next week.
Jenna, from Strathaven, sagged a little bit in the third round with a 75 but her first two rounds of 69 stood her in good stead and she qualified in joint 19th place on three-under-par 213 of the 28 players who qualified with totals of one-under-par 215 or better.
US-based Vikki Laing, who will be flying back to the States, to contest the LPGA Qualifying School, made a gallant bid to make up the leeway left her by indifdferne opening rounds of 74 and 76. The Musselburgh player shot a four-under-par 68, one of the lowest by anyone on the final day, but her three-round total of two-over-par 218 was three shots too many to qualify.
Heather MacRae from Dunblane finished with a one-over-par 73 for five-over-par 221. An opening round of 78 was the "killer" as far as Heather was concerned.
One of the intriguing feature of the final totals today was that the first five players are still amateurs and, in all, 17 of the 28 qualifiers, are amateurs.

HALL, BELL AND REID THE TOP BRITS AMONG THE
28 QUALIFIERS AT ONE-UNDER 215 OR BETTER

By BETHAN CUTLER
Ladies European Tour website

Amateurs Emma Cabrera-Bello from Spain and France’s Camille Fallay led the qualifiers for the Final Stage of the Ladies European Tour’s Qualifying School after tieing at the top of the leader board on the conclusionof the 54-hole Pre-Qualifier at Le Fonti Golf Club in Italy today.
Cabrera-Bello, 21, from Gran Canaria and Fallay, 25, from Bussy, were two of 28 players, including 18 amateurs, to have secured a place in next week’s Final Qualifying School at the same venue.
They will join the 66 professionals already exempt to make a field of 94 players.
Cabrera-Bello carded a final round of five-under 67 for a 12-under-par 54-hole total of 204 while Fallay, who led by three shots entering the final round, posted a 71 to share the winning total.
“The last nine was difficult today because I was a little tired but I played three rounds under par so I am very happy. I hope to play like that next week,” said Fallay, the less experienced of the pair, having taken up the game only five years ago.
Cabrera-Bello, who began golfing aged five and who was a member of the PING Junior Solheim Cup team in 2002 and 2003, as well as a Junior Ryder Cup player in 2002, said: “I’ve been playing golf for 16 years now and on the national team for seven years so I wasn’t too nervous today. It wasn’t about winning today; it was about making it into the top 25 so that makes it a little easier.
"As long as you play regularly, I knew I was going to make it. I was quite relaxed and that’s probably why I scored low.
“I never expected myself to be in the lead but it brings up your confidence for next week. Next week is the real thing. That’s when you really have to play well."
French amateur Caroline Afonso finished strongly with a 69 for an 11-under total. Welsh amateur Lydia Hall closed with a 66 to share fourth position with English amateur Rachel Bell, who had a final round of 69.
England’s leading amateur Melissa Reid had a 71 to share sixth place on six-under-par with Cortney Reno (68) and Beth Allen (69) from the United States.
The cut to 25 players and ties fell at one-under-par, with four players finishing on that number. Stage 2, Final Qualifying, will take place next week from Tuesday to Friday (October 21 to 26) over 72 holes of stroke-play.
There will be a cut to the leading 50 players and ties after 54 holes. The leading 30 players after four rounds will receive Category 8 membership of the Ladies European Tour, which will give them starts in most full field tournaments.
Those players who finish in positions 31-50 and ties will receive membership in Category 10b, with some playing restrictions.
Qualifiers from Stage 1, Pre-Qualifying today were:

ALL FAIRWAYS FOR LADY GOLFERS LEAD TO HACIENDA
DEL ALAMO GOLF RESORT, SPAIN NEXT FEBRUARY

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
There will be a minimum of six competitions during the coming winter in which all the non-qualifiers at the Ladies European Tour Q School Pre-Qualifier will be able to play.
In fact, they will be open to ALL lady professionals and ALL lady amateur golfers, as long as they have a single-figure handicaps, and that includes the ever-increasing number of senior lady golfers.
Kirkwoodgolf.co.uk will have more specific details for you on this website tomorrow.
In the meantime, just to whet your appetite, all the events will be played at Hacienda del Alamo Golf Resort in Murcia, Spain. They will be staged between February 10 and February 23.
The fortnight's programme is something of a trail-blazer for the Murcia Ladies Open Tour, a developmental circuit of 36-hole events (two a week) which will tee from early January to early March in 2009 with Hacienda del Alamo the HQ.
If you have any queries, E-mail me at Colin@scottishgolfview.com

Ladies European Tour Q School Pre-Qualifier

SCOTTISH ANGLE: IT'S LOOKING GOOD FOR JENNA
BY COLIN FARQUHARSON
Scottish amateur champion Jenna Wilson from Strathaven is well placed with one round to go to be among the leading 25 and ties who will go forward after Friday's final round of the LET Pre-qualifier to next week's Final Q School in Italy.
Jenna, who has retained her amateur status, is lying in joint fifth place on six-under-par 138 after a pair of 69s.
Not so good news concerning the two other Scots in the field although Heather MacRae from Dunblane did return one of the better rounds of the day, a two-under-par 70 but, with a 36-hole tally of four-over-par 148 she is still in joint 55th place and needing to improve another 30 places over the last 18 holes.
Mission Impossible? Not quite, if Heather can break 70 by a stroke or two at the last time of asking.
Vikki Laing, who flew from her American base to try for a place on next season's Ladies European Tour, slipped back from an opening 74 to a 76 for 150. She is lying joint 69th on 150.

LEADING FOUR PLAYERS IN LET PRE
-QUALIFIER ARE ALL AMATEURS

FROM THE LADIES EUROPEAN TOUR WEBSITE
French amateur Camille Fallay took a three-stroke lead after the second round of the Ladies European Tour’s Pre-Qualifying School at Le Fonti Golf Club in Castel San Pietro Terme near Bologna in Italy today.
The 25-year-old from Bussy, east of Paris, became a step closer to securing her playing rights for the 2008 season. A total of 25 players and ties will progress at the end of tomorrow's third round to next week's Final Qualifying School, held at the same venue.
Fallay improved on her personal best score of 67 set yesterday with a six-under-par 66 for an 11-under-par aggregate. A naturally talented sportswoman, Fallay plays off a handicap of +2.5 at Bussy Golf Club in Guermantes. She took up the game only five years ago at the age of 20 and had reduced her handicap from 26 to scratch in just three years.
Her mother introduced her to golf after she finished horse-riding competitively. In that sport, she took third place in the junior French championship at the age of 12. She also enjoys tennis, watching television and shopping in Paris.
The Frenchwoman fired off four birdies and an eagle in her second round on Thursday. The eagle was achieved when she holed her second shot from 110 metres with a nine-iron at the par-four 16th.
I like pressure,” said Fallay. “I was very stressed this morning but I started to relax and got my ball on the fairways and greens. It was an easy strategy and I’ll aim to do the same again tomorrow.
Japan’s Yuki Sakurai and France’s Caroline Afonso are tied for second place on eight-under-par heading into the final round of Pre-Qualifying. Sakurai had a 67 while joint first round leader Afonso had a 70.
Spain’s Emma Cabrera, a two-time PING Junior Solheim Cup player, carded 68 for a total of seven-under-par. All of the top four placed players in the field are amateurs.
Playing for the first time in Europe, the 18-year-old Sakurai from Tokyo bettered her personal low round by a stroke. Sakurai, who plays off a handicap of +3.7, said she carded six-under-par in the Junior World Championships in San Diego last yea
Elsewhere, there were two hole-in-ones in two days at Le Fonti GC after England’s Michelle Smith aced the par-3 ninth hole in round one, and Bronwyn Mullins-Lane aced the par-3 second hole in Thursday’s second round.
Smith’s ace contributed to her opening 75, and she added a 69 taking her to level par after two rounds.
Mullins-Lane’s ace formed part of an impressive 66, placing the Australian on four-under-par in a tie for 11th after 36 holes. The Australian, who lives in North London, England, hit a “little 5-iron” straight at the flag to experience her fourth hole-in-one. It formed part of a tremendous start that began birdie, eagle, birdie, birdie.
“I thought it would be close but I didn’t expect it to go in the hole,” said Mullins Lane, 29, from Townsville in Queensland, continuing: “I haven’t hit my peak yet!” The final round of Pre-Qualifying takes place on Friday when only the leading 25 and ties will go forward to next week's LET Final Qualifying School.

MICHELLE WIE'S MANAGER RESIGNS AFTER
"CAREFUL CONSIDERATION OF MY FUTURE"

Michelle Wie's manager, Greg Nared, resigned today after less than a year in the job.
A former Nike business manager, Nared was hired by the William Morris Agency to manage
the Hawaii teenager.
She finished 19th in a field of 20 players for the Samsung World Championship at the weekend.
“After careful consideration for my future, I have resigned effective immediately,” Nared said in a prepared statement. “I’m very grateful to the William Morris Agency for the opportunity to work with world-class athletes. It has been an invaluable experience and I’ll forever cherish it."
When contacted at his home in Oregon, Nared declined to elaborate.
Wie, a Stanford University, California first-year student, celebrated her 18th birthday last Thursday although she had precious little to celebrate except possibly the Nike and Sony long-term endorsement contracts that guarantee her several million dollars a year whether she wins, loses or draws.
"The Samsung" - or should it be "Swansong" - was Michelle's eighth and final LPGA event of 2008. She ended her season with a 76.7 scoring average. She beat par only twice, failed to record a single round in the 60s. She survived only three cuts. There was no cut in the Samsung World Championship for which Michelle earned $13,125 for an 18-over-par, 72-hole total of 306.
Hailed in her early teens as the most exciting prospect in golf, male or female, Michelle turned pro in October 2005 and was managed by Ross Berlin, a former US PGA Tour executive hired by the William Morris Agency.
Berlin did not get on well with Wie’s parents. They had several disputes over her playing schedule. That on-going difference of opinion came to a head towards the end of last year when Wie, at that time a senior-year student at Punahou High School, Honolulu, played in a European Tour men’s event in Switzerland, then the following week in a US PGA Tour event.
Ross Berlin obviously did not think that was a good move for her career at all. He was right. She finished last in both events.
Berlin resigned after the "Samsung" 12 months ago. He was replaced by Nared, who was well-liked by the teenager and her family. Nared was centre stage in her biggest controversy at the Ginn Tribute in South Carolina in the spring, interrupting her round to have an earnest conversation with her on the 16th tee. She did not hit another ball before notifying LPGA officials she was withdrawing from the tournament because of a sore wrist.
At the time, Wie was 14 over par for the round. The general opinion was that Nared told her to quit the round immediately and so dodge the LPGA’s “Rule 88,” in which non-members are ineligible to play in any competitions for one year if they shoot 88 or higher.
Wie then showed up at Bulle Rock two days later to practise for the McDonald’s LPGA Championship, and Annika Sorenstam harshly denounced the move as disrespectful.
Now Michelle has lost two managers within the space of 12 months.
The phrase which ends " ..... deserting a sinking ship" comes to mind.

BOYS BEAT GIRLS IN ENGLAND MATCH
AT OGBOURNE DOWNS, WILTSHIRE

England’s Under-18 girls lost their annual match against the England Under-16 boys when they were beaten 12-3 at Ogbourne Downs, Wiltshire.
Team captain Sara Garbutt said: “The boys played very well. They were particularly good at the short game and a number of them were under par.”
The two teams played lay-outs of similar length and, with the undulating course demanding long carries, the girls found it difficult to compete. They played from the yellow tees and their yardage was just 253 yards less than the boys, who were off the white tees.
The girls received one shot in the morning and two in the afternoon.
In the morning foursomes three matches went to the 18th but the scoreline at lunch was 4˝-˝ in the boys’ favour. The girls’ half was provided by the Hampshire pair of Raffi Dyer and Katie Mundy who were trailing early in their game but who fought back with three consecutive birdies.
In the singles, English schools’ champion Hannah Barwood had the better of an all-Gloucestershire clash against Chris Lloyd. Her sharp short game helped her to score several birdies, including one on the 18th which sealed her win by two holes.
Kent’s Sarah Tyson produced an impressive performance against Max Smith. Sarah was never down in her match, always kept control and won by 2 and 1.
Her county colleague Sian Evans secured the girls’ other half point when she got up-and-down from 40 yards at the last in her match against James Burnett.
Meanwhile, Nottinghamshire’s Katie Best and Alex Peters were both beaten on the 18th, with Alex losing to a birdie. Raffi Dyer was also closed out of her singles when her opponent chipped in for a birdie on the 17th. The girls’ team was:
Heidi Baek (Felixstowe Ferry), Hannah Barwood (Knowle), Katie Best (Sherwood Forest), Holly Clyburn (Woodhall Spa), Raffi Dyer (Hayling), Sian Evans (Faversham), Katie Mundy (Dunwood Manor), Alex Peters (Notts Ladies), Helen Searle (West End), Sarah Tyson (London).
