LAURA LOSES MOMENTUM AND FINISHES
FIFTH IN JAPAN'S MIZUNO CLASSIC
Laura Davies finished a disappointing joint fifth in the Mizuno Clasic at the Kinetsu Kashikojima Country Club, Shima in Japan. She never fully recovered from the setback of a two-stroke penalty for putting from the wrong spot on a green in the second round.
Momoko Ueda, who shared the 36-hole lead with the English player, became the first Japanese player to win the Mizuno Classic in nine years.
She was the player with the momentum going into the final day and she signed off with a five-under-par 66 today to win by two strokes from Reilley Rankin (US) and Sweden's Maria Hjorth.
Ueda finished with a 13-under 203 total and earned $210,000 for her first LPGA Tour victory.
Rankin and Hjorth, the 1999 champion, closed with 67s for 205.
Shinobu Moromizato (67) was fourth on 208. Davies shot a 72 to tie for fifth at seven-under 209 with Mi Hyun Kim (71), Chie Arimura (70) and Mie Nakata (71). Laura earned $44,489, but it could have been so much more.
Davies was penalised two strokes in the second round for putting from the wrong spot on the 14th green. She forgot to return her ball to its original spot after moving her marker because it was in a competitor's line.
