USGA name Noreen Mohler

as captain for 2010

Curtis Cup match

The United States Golf Association announced this week that 55-year-old Noreen Friel Mohler from Bethlehem, Pennsylvania will captain the American team against Great Britain & Ireland in the next Curtis Cup match.
It will be held at Essex County Club, Manchester in Massachusetts in June 2010.
Mohler, as Noreen Uihleen, played in the winning United States team in the 1978 Curtis Cup match at The Apawamis Club, Rye in New York State, where the scoreline was 12-6 in favour of the home team.
Noreen lost to Mary Everard 7 and 6 in the first-day singles but teamed up with Judy Oliver to beat Julia Greenhalgh and Vanessa Marvin 4 and 3 in the foursomes on the second day when she halved her singles tie with Everard.
Mary McKenna, who will captain the GB&I team in 2010, also played in the 1978 match in which the team captains were Helen Wilson (US) and Carol Comboy (GB&I). In all, Mary played in nine Curtis Cup matches betwen 1970 and 1986.
Noreen turned professional and played on the LPGA Tour in 1984 and 1985 before becoming a restaurant owner and seeking reinstatement as an amateur golfer.
She virtually gave up competitive golf for the next 20 years before returning to the fray in 2006 in mid-amateur and seniors' championships.

FROM THE USGA WEBSITE:
“This is the highest honour that I have ever received in my golfing career,” said Mohler. “I am honoured, humbled and excited about this opportunity. It was the thrill of a lifetime to play in the Curtis Cup, and I’m sure that it will be a life-changing experience as a captain.”
Mohler was a semi-finalist in the 1975 US Women’s Amateur Championship and has played in five US Women’s Opens.
After stepping away from her playing career for a number of years to concentrate on her family and business affairs, she returned to the game in 2006 and reached the quarter-finals of the 2007 USGA Women’s Senior Amateur Championship and the semi-finals of the 2008 US Women’s Mid-Amateur Championship.
Born in Woburn, Massachusetts, Mohler is a three-time Massachusetts State Women’s Amateur Champion (1973, 1980, 1981). She is also the Co-Chairman of the Marshals Committee for the 2009 U.S. Women’s Open, which will be held at Saucon Valley Country Club in Bethlehem, Pennsylviania from July 6-12.
