National universities stroke-play championships at Notts

Jane Turner is the best of

British - winner by five

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Craigielaw's Jane Turner, a student at Robert Gordon University, Aberdeen, has taken the British women's universities stroke-play golf championship trophy home to Scotland after three excellent rounds at Notts Golf Club.
Jane, 19, pictured right, spreadeagled the field with a first-round, six-under-par 69 - a women's record for the 5,864yd, par-75 course - and built on that flying start with subsequent rounds of 73 and 73 for an impressive 10-under-par total of 215 at Notts Golf Club.
The only Scot in the tournament, Turner won by five shots from Gloucestershire's Sian James (Birmingham University), recent winner of the R&A Bursars' women's title after three rounds at St Andrews. Sian was 10 shots adrift of Turner after an opening 79 and she did well to halve the deficit with later rounds of 70 and 71.
Katherine O'Connor of UW Newport edged out another Birmingham student, Lucy Williams, to take third place, with a total of 226.
In the British men's universities stroke-play championship, which still has one day to go, Kevin Garwood from Bournemouth has opened up a two-shot lead with a 54-hole tally of 213.
Stirling students Bobby Rushford and James White are the leading Scots in joint sixth and eighth place respectively on 222 and 223. Rushford has scored 76, 71 and 75; White 77, 72 and 74.
