LUCKY SUSAN! SHE'S OFF TO DUBAI

TO REFEREE AT LADIES' MASTERS

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Carnoustie-based Susan Simpson, the Ladies Golf Union's Head of Golf Operations, is escaping from dreich Scotland - for a few days!
She is heading for the sunshine of Dubai where she has accepted an invitation from the Ladies European Tour to act as a referee during its season-ending Omega Dubai Ladies Masters, starting at the Emirates Golf Club next Wednesday.
"Sometimes we help out at LET events but this will be my first trip to Dubai. We have a very good relationship with the Ladies European Tour and such reciprocal arrangements are to everyone's benefit," said Susan who was a good-class player in her day, winning the Munross Trophy 36-hole open at Montrose and being beaten finalist in the 1996 North of Scotland women's championship at Blairgowrie.
LGU championship manager Fraser Munro, also a Scot, has also used his golf referee qualifications on foreign shores.
"I had the honour of refereeing at the US Women's Open (at Saucon Valley Country Club, Bethlehem, Pennsylvania) earlier this year. I refereed all four days and had the likes of Helen Alfredsson, Stacy Lewis, Brittany Lang and Mika Miyazato in my pairings," said Fraser.
"I also refereed Paula Creamer's game on the final day of this year's Ricoh Women's British Open at Royal Lytham. It was a fantastic experience."
