GEMMA LYING 11th AFTER TWO
ROUNDS OF LANDFALL TRADITION
AT WILMINGTON

Glasgow's Gemma Webster (Ohio State University) had rounds of 72 and 75 for a 36-hole tally of 147 and 11th place in a field of 60 players going into Sunday's final round of the Women's Landfall Tradition college tournament at Country Club of Landfall, Wilmington in North Carolina.
Gemma, pictured left, had birdies at the short third and seventh in her par-matching first round and then started badly in the second with a bogey at the first and a double bogey7 at the long second. But she settled down after that to birdie the short third for a second time and the short sixth as well at the long eighth.
Leading the field in French girl Christel Boeljon (Purdue University) with 68 and 72 for four-under-par 140.

She leads by one from two Wake Forest players, Laura Crawford (69-72) and Nanette Hill (75-66).
Wake Forest (577) lead the team event from Purdue (586). Ohio State (599) are lying sixth of 12.

AUSSIE LACEY WINS FROM AMATEUR HALL AS
FINAL QUALIFYING SCHOOL ENDS IN ITALY

By BETHAN CUTLER
From Ladies European Tour Website
Australia’s Dana Lacey won the Ladies European Tour’s Final Qualifying School for the 2008 season after a dramatic final day at Le Fonti Golf Club in Italy.
The 25-year-old from Perth, Western Australia was one of 30 players to earn full playing privileges for the 2008 season, with the other 22 players in the field earning a conditional card. Lacey, who led the tournament after the second day’s play, fired rounds of 69, 67, 72 and 67 for a 72-hole total of 275,13-under-par.
Welsh amateur Lydia Hall, 19, finished a shot further back and was the runner-up after a final round of 71. She will now turn professional after earning her full card for 2008.
Another Australian, Frances Bondad, 19, from Sydney, took third place on 11-under-par and four players tied for fourth on 10-under-par.
Lacey held a conditional Ladies European Tour card in 2007 but spent most of the season competing on the Duramed Futures Tour in America. She fared better at her second qualifying attempt and will play the full 2008 season in Europe.
“I’m extremely happy. This is my first professional win ever. I am over the moon,” said Lacey, who had fellow LET professional Melanie Holmes Smith of Australia on caddie duties for the final round.
“I played fantastic today. I hit 18 greens and holed some putts that I needed to. It was just a really cruisy, easy day. I started out a bit rough. I bogeyed the first and birdied the next and bogeyed the next but I got my nerves on track.”
Lacey posted six further birdies from the sixth hole. A two-hole play-off between five players determined who took the last two full cards. England’s Natalie Booth and Camille Fallay of France were successful over Italy’s Isabella Maconi, America’s Beth Allen and Australia’s Bronwyn Mullins-Lane.
Maconi and Allen were eliminated at the first extra hole, the par-three 17th, while Mullins-Lane lost out at the par-four 18th.

GREAT FINISH (seven birdies in 15 holes)
GETS JENNA A TOP-30 CARD FOR
NEXT SEASON'S LADIES' EURO TOUR

Congratulations to Scottish amateur champion Jenna Wilson - who has probably joined the professional ranks forthwith after winning joint 23rd ranking at the Ladies European Tour Final Qualifying School at Le Fonti Golf Club, near Bologna in Italy today.
That means the 23-year-old from Strathaven, pictured right, will be able to play in any LET event she wants to play in on the 2008 Tour.
Jenna showed she's made of the right stuff with a magnificent final round of four-under-par 68 for a 72-hole total of two-under-par 286.
At the start of the day, having survived the third-round cut with nothing to spare, she faced an uphill task to improve her position into the top 30 in the final standings.
But she responded with her best golf of the week which augurs well for her future professional career.
Over the first three rounds, Jenna had one eagle and five birdies. Over the first 15 holes of her final round, she had seventh birdies and was actually seven under par for the day with three to play, having birdied the second, third, fourth, seventh (out in 32), 13th, 14th and 15th.
She bogeyed the last three holes but, by that time, she had done enough to secure her place on next year's Ladies European Tour.
Worth noting that Jenna was one of 10 amateurs to gain the top 30 cards.

THE IRISH ANGLE ... FROM THE IRISH LGU

Ireland’s Martina Gillen earned her Ladies European Tour Card for the 2008 season with an impressive four under par 68 in her final round at the LET Final Qualifying School at Le Fonti Golf Club, Italy.
Gillen finished joint fourth, five shots off leader Dana Lacy (Australia), and will join Rebecca Coakley on next year’s Ladies European Tour as Ireland’s sole representatives.
Gillen got off to a flying start, birdieing her opening two holes and went on to fire another four birdies over the next eight holes. Joint leader through 13, she dropped two shots over the closing holes but her earlier hard work was well rewarded as she signed for her second 68 of the week and augur’s well for an encouraging season in 2008.
Ireland’s other representatives Claire Coughlan and Hazel Kavanagh missed out on qualification for today’s final round by one and five strokes respectively, earlier in the week.
The top 30 competitors secured Category 8 membership of the 2008 Ladies European Tour with the following 22 players attaining Category 10b membership with some playing restrictions.

Scots girls having a nightmare in "The Spirit"

SCOTT MANN, SCOTT BORROWMAN
GET THE HANG OF IT WITH A 69

There is an art to better-ball team scoring at international level, usually involving a delicate balance between one player making sure of a par while the other has a go for a birdie.
Scotland's male pair - Scott Mann (Carnoustie), pictured right, and Scott Borrowman (Dollar) - seemed to get the hang of it by improving on the first-round performance with a three-under-par better ball score of 69 on the second day of The Spirit mixed amateur international team golf tournament at Whispering Pines Golf Club, Trinity in Texas today.
But things went from bad to worse for the Scots' girls, Michele Thomson from Ellon and Auchterarder's Emily Ogilvy. It would seem that neither is playing well, so going for a birdie is not in the game plan.
Their better-ball second round score was a nine-over-par 81, following their 78 on the first day.
Today Michele and Emily had two better-ball double-bogey 6s, five better-ball bogeys and not a single birdie in sight for either player.
The men's and women's scores are added together for a team total and Scotland's 36-hole aggregate of 301 puts them almost at the bottom of the table of 23 competing countries. Only Puerto Rico (304) and Brazil (312) are below them.
LEADING TEAM TOTALS
270 Korea.
272 England (130 Gary Boyd & Daniel Willett 63 67; 142 Naomi Edwards & Elizabeth Bennett 71 71).

WELSH AMATEUR LYDIA SURPRISES HERSELF BY JOINTLY LEADING
QUALIFERS FOR FINAL DAY

By BETHAN CUTLER
From the Ladies' European Tour Website
Welsh amateur Lydia Hall (Royal Porthcawl) and French rookie Melodie Bourdy led the qualifiers for the Ladies European Tour’s 2008 season after the cut to 50 players and ties at Le Fonti GC in Castel San Pietro del Terme in Italy today.
Hall, 19, pictured left, carded a third round of 67 while Bourdy, who turns 21 on Friday, carded a 68 for a 54-hole total of 205, 11-under-par. The pair finished two strokes clear of Spain’s Emma Cabrera, with Australia’s Frances Bondad and Dana Lacey a stroke further back.
The cut fell to 52 players on two-over-par 148 or better. The leading 30 players after 72 holes will attain Category 8 status on the LET next season while the players making the cut but finishing outside the top 30 will receive Category 10b.
In case of a tie for 30th position there will be a play-off.
Hall, from Pencoed near Bridgend in South Wales, carded five birdies, two bogeys and one eagle in her third round. She said: “I played really solidly again today. I just put the ball in the right places and created chances to get birdies.
“To be honest I didn’t expect to play this well but I put loads of hard work in. I’m just pleased that it’s come off at the right time.”
Bourdy began her day in optimum fashion by holing out with a 52 degree wedge from 83 metres for an eagle 2 at the first hole, and posted four further birdies and two bogeys. The pint-sized player, who is the sister of European Tour professional Gregory, commented: “I made an eagle at the first so it was very good for the confidence and after that it was easy to play. I putted well and drove the ball well. I am lucky and I’m trying to win this tournament so I will try my best tomorrow.”
SCROLL DOWN FOR THE THIRD ROUND SCORES, THE QUALIFIERS AND THE NON-QUALIFIERS

SCOTTISH ANGLE BY COLIN FARQUHARSON

JENNA KEEPS HER NERVE TO BEAT THE CUT
BUT MELISSA, HAMMER OF THE SCOTS, IS
SURPRISE NON-QUALIFIER IN ITALY
Scottish amateur champion Jenna Wilson made it by the skin of her teeth into the fourth and final round of the Ladies European Tour Final Qualifying School. A third round of 74 gave her a 54-hole tally of two-over-par 218, which was the limit mark for qualifying for the final day.
But the most important thing is that the Strathaven player has guaranteed herself a place on the Ladies European Tour next season. She will gain entry to more tournaments in 2008 if she can come up with a very good final round to jump from joint 46th into the top 30.
As predicted, Thursday was "moving day" with many players producing their best round of the three so far to climb up the standings. So that's why Jenna, also she improved by a shot on her second-round 75, actually lost ground because a lot of players surged past her.
She started with a birdie 2 but then shed shots at each of the third, fourth, fifth and eighth to be out in three-over-par 39 - her worst of the week against the par of 36.
A birdie at the 11th gave her the encouragement she needed. Although Jenna bogeyed the 12th, a birdie at the 15th was vital. She needed at least to par the last three holes to stay on the right side of the cut and, to her credit, the Scot stood up to the test of nerve, more than golf, to come home in one-under-par 35.
Perhaps the most surprising non-qualifier was Melissa Reid, the Chevin, Derby girl who won the Helen Holm Scottish women's stroke-play in April, the St Rule Trophy in June and was the leading amateur in the Ricoh Women's British Open over the Old Course in mid-summer.
Just when she needed more of that sparkling form, it deserted her this week. Scores of 75, 75 and 74 left her in joint 78th place on eight-over-par 224, probably her worst tournament scores of what has otherwise been an outstanding season.
Melissa had a double-bogey 6 at the very last hole. It was her second double bogey 6 of the tournament. She had one in the first round.
But the Curtis Cup selectors will be relieved that their star player will be available for the match against the United States over the Old Course at the end of May.

Irish Ladies Golf Union Press Release

2007 LADIES EUROPEAN TOUR FINAL QUALIFYING SCHOOL

MARTINA GILLEN THROUGH TO FINAL DAY

Martina Gillen’s hopes of retaining her Ladies European Tour Card for the 2008 season received a significant boost following a third round 71 to lie in tenth place, five shots off the lead, at the LET Final Qualifying School, Le Fonti Golf Club in Italy today.
Gillen’s steady outward stretch saw her bogey the fifth but three birdies in the final six holes saw her sign for a gutsy 71, eight shots inside the qualifying cut after 54 holes. Barring a disastrous final round, she should pass safely into the top 30 tomorrow evening.
Claire Coughlan was heart-breakingly just one shot too many in her attempt to retain her card for the coming season. Birdies at eight, 10 and 13 saw the Cork girl stride into the home stretch but two dropped shots over the final three holes cost her dearly.
Ireland’s third representative, Hazel Kavanagh, added a 75 to her opening brace of 74s to also miss out on qualification for the final round. Birdies on the first and 17th holes added a glimmer of hope but a wretched double-bogey at the last quenched her aspirations.
A total of 52 from the starting field of 94 competitors contest the final 18 holes on Friday with the top 30 after the fourth round securing Category 8 membership of the 2008 Ladies European Tour.
Players who finish in positions 31 through 50 will receive Category 10b membership, with some playing restrictions.

WIZARD FROM OZ DANA LEADS AFTER 36
HOLES OF LADIES EURO TOUR Q SCHOOL

By BETHAN CUTLER
From Ladies' European Tour website
Australia’s Dana Lacey added a five-under-par 67 to her opening 69 to lead on eight-under-par 136 following the second round of the Ladies European Tour’s Final Qualifying School in Italy.
The 25-year-old from Perth, Western Australia was a stroke clear of France’s Melodie Bourdy, with Sweden’s Anna Knutsson, English amateur Emma Lyons and Welsh amateur Lydia Hall a stroke further back on six-under-par 138.
Swiss player Nora Angehrn, who set a course record 65 in the first round, had a 74 and tied with four players on five-under-par 139.
Lacey carded six birdies and one bogey on the Le Fonti course in Castel San Pietro near Bologna. The United States Duramed Futures Tour player, who held limited playing privileges on the Ladies European Tour throughout 2007, finished tied for 29th in September’s De Vere Ladies Scottish Open, which allowed her to skip last week’s Pre-Qualifying in Italy.
“At La Cala (where Final Q School was played in 2006), I missed out on the last round and I went back and played a year on the Futures Tour,” explained Lacey.“I actually came out and played in the Scottish Open and made the cut, so I could come straight to Final Qualifying School. I really want to play in Europe so I’m going for it. As long as I get my card I’ll be happy.” Bourdy, who turns 21 on Friday, has the luxury of four-time Ladies European Tour winner Stephanie Arricau on caddie duties this week.
Bourdy, a first year Tour player, whose brother Gregory is a European Tour professional, recorded a second round of 69 to place herself in a strong position ahead of the cut to 50 players and ties after Thursday's third round.
“It’s very nice having Stephanie to caddie for me because she is a very good player and she helps me a lot,” said Bourdy, adding: “My objective is to win here because last year I missed out by one shot. This year I am trying to be the best. I know that I can do it.”
Bourdy played in 10 events on a conditional card in 2007 and made six cuts, with her best finish joint tenth at the Ladies Open of Portugal.
This week's 72-hole Stage 2, Final Qualifying ends on Friday. The leading 30 players will receive Category 8 membership of the Ladies European Tour, which will give starts in most full field tournaments.
Those players who finish in positions 31-50 and ties will receive membership in Category 10b, with some playing restrictions.

KEEP YOUR FINGERS CROSSED FOR JENNA ON THURSDAY

Scottish amateur champion Jenna Wilson needs to hold her nerve on "moving day" - the third round - in the Ladies' European Tour Final Qualifying School in Italy tomorrow.
She slipped back a bit from the high of a three-under-par 69 on Tuesday to a three-over 75 today but on level par 144 and joint 29th place she is solidly placed to achieve her first target this week, namely to be among the leading 50 players and ties after Thursday's third round.
Get through to the fourth round by hook or by crook and then worry about finishing as high as possible in the final round to gain one of the top 30 cards for the LET of 2009.
Good luck, Jenna! The folks back home have their fingers crossed for you.

JANE, NEIL WIN SCOTTISH JUNIOR CHAMPION OF CHAMPIONS' TITLES

Jane Turner (Mortonhall), pictured right, capped an excellent golf season by winning the Scottish Junior Champion of Champions' girls title at Kingsbarns Links.
Winner of the East of Scotland Ladies and Midlothian girls championships, Jane beat Ladybank's Susan Jackson on a better inward half after they had tied at the head of the field on 81.
Considering it was the first time she had ever played the impressive Fife links, which looks as though it has been there for years but hasn't, Jane's performance was all the more praiseworthy.
Jane, now coached by SLGA national coach Kevin Craggs, was introduced to golf by her dad eight years ago. She has been East of Scotland girls champion for the past three years and was a member of the Scotland team who retained the Under-18 girls home internationals title.
The boys' champion of champions' honour was claimed by Scottish schoolboys title-holder Neil Henderson (The Glen, Berwick), also on a card play-off, from David Parlane (Helensburgh).
Both teenagers played exceptionally well to tie on two-under-par 70, great scoring over a championship links, used in the Alfred Dunhill Links championship.
Henderson, coached by twice former Northern Open champion Colin Brooks, won the countback with the better last six holes. It was that close.
The scoring was exceptionally good in the boys' section with five players in all getting under the par of 72.

Ladies European Tour Final Qualifying School

SWISS MISS NORA LEADS THE WAY WITH A
SEVEN-UNDER-PAR 65 IN ITALY

By BETHAN CUTLER
From Ladies European Tour website
Switzerland’s Nora Angehrn led the chase for places on the 2008 Ladies European Tour after a course record seven-under-par 65 at Final Qualifying School in Italy today.
The 27-year-old from Zurich fired an eagle, six birdies and a bogey to record her career low round at Le Fonti Golf Club in Castel San Pietro near Bologna.
She finished a shot clear of Dutch amateur Marjet van der Graaff who had a 66, and two clear of nine players all on 68: Caroline Afonso, Anna Knutsson, Lydia Hall, Julie Greciet, Martina Gillen, Melodie Bourdy, Nina Reis, Denise-Charlotte Becker and Maria Ohlsson.
Angehrn is looking to retain her card for 2008 after struggling in her third year on Tour, having made three cuts from 20 starts in 2007.
“This year I struggled on the golf course and also personally, health wise,” said Angehrn, who enjoys snowboarding and waterskiing in her spare time.
“I pulled a muscle in my stomach doing weight-lifting at the beginning of the year. Then I had an ear infection just before Australia. I went to South Africa to play a few tournaments and then I had tonsillitis. I think that pulled me back a bit but I didn’t realise it until later.”
She arrived at Le Fonti with a slight advantage over the field having caddied in last year’s Pre- Qualifying event. “I knew the course well and that was very helpful. It’s always good to see the course from a caddie’s view,” she added.
This week, Angehrn’s coach Denise Lavigne is on the bag, which has given her fresh confidence, along with the fact that she recorded her best finish of the year with a 26th place at the UNIQA Ladies Golf Open in Austria three weeks ago.
Playing in the first round, Angehrn hit 18 greens and made 30 putts. She eagled the par-4 third hole when she holed out from 107 metres with a gap wedge and took advantage of her birdie opportunities on the sixth, seventh, ninth, 11th, 12th and 14th holes.
The only mistake on the scorecard was a bogey at the fifth.
“I had a great start and I was hitting it solidly. I still left some putts out there though!” said Angehrn. “It was nice to play with Melissa Reid, a good amateur player. She is very talented but she had a bit of bad luck and finished on three-over-par. She was hitting it very nicely though.” The 72-hole Stage 2, Final Qualifying, runs from over four days and four rounds, finishing on Friday.
There will be a cut to the leading 50 players and ties after 54 holes. The leading 30 players will receive Category 8 membership of the Ladies European Tour, which will give starts in most full field tournaments.
Those players who finish in positions 31-50 and ties will receive membership in Category 10b, with some playing restrictions.

Jenna makes a very good start with a 69

Scottish amateur champion Jenna Wilson from Strathaven has made a very good start with a three-under-par round of 69 to be joint 12th at the end of the first day at the Ladies European Tour Final Q School in Italy.
Jenna, the only Scot in the field - Vikki Laing and Heather MacRae were eliminated in last week's Pre-Qualifier, had an eagle 3 at the long seventh and birdie 2s at two short holes - the second and the 17th. Her only bogey in halves of 34 (two under par) and 35 (one under) came at the sixth.

First female player to score under par at Hacienda del Alamo

ELAINE SETS RECORD AT SPANISH
COURSE WHILE ON HOLIDAY

Aberdeen solicitor Elaine Farquharson-Black has turned back the clock to her glory days as an amateur international golfer, by becoming the first female player to return a score under the women's par of 72 at Hacienda del Alamo Golf Resort in Murcia, Spain.
Invited by North-east man Billy Sim, the resort's director of golf, to compete in the Torneo Fundacion Chinguetti one-round charity competition while on holiday at Hacienda del Alamo, Elaine claimed the course record with a score of 70.
"Considering Elaine had not seen the course before, it was a fantastic effort," said Billy Sim. "The ladies' course is more than 6,000yd long and no female golfer has come nearing breaking the par of 72 in the two or three years since Dave Thomas designed the championship course."
A former Scottish girls' and women's champion and Curtis Cup player, Elaine set several women's course records in the North-east in her hey day. At least one still stands - a terrific 10 under par score of 65 over the Moray Golf Club Old course at Lossiemouth.
Elaine is an honorary member of Deeside Golf Club.
