Lancome Irish women's closed championship

Maguire twins share lead at end of

first qualifying round at Fota Island

NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY IRISH LADIES GOLF UNION
The phenomenal 14-year-old Maguire twins from the Slieve Russell club look set to continue their dominance of the Irish ladies' golf following opening rounds of level par 74 in the first qualifying round of the Lancome Irish Women’s Close Championship at Fota Island Golf Resort, eight miles east of Cork.
Lisa (pictured right by Cal Carson Golf Agency) and twin sister Leona played in the best of the day’s conditions which had a bright but blustery start, before turning to high winds and heavy showers in the afternoon, making playing conditions extremely challenging for the later-starting competitors.
Defending champion Leona got off to a superb start by chipping in for an eagle 3 at the par-5 fourth hole. A string of solid pars followed until the 16th and 18th holes, where errant tee shots ledd to two bogeys and her having to settle for a level par 74.
Sister Lisa, last year’s leading qualifier, posted the same score, but will be disappointed after being three under par through nine holes.
Closest challenger is Mary Dowling (New Ross), who carded a score of 76 which included three birdies in the opening four holes. Bogeys on the final two holes cost her a share of the lead.
A shot further back, after rounds of 77, are current internationals Niamh Kitching (Claremorris) and Gillian O’Leary (Cork) as well as girls international Sarah Crowe (Tipperary).
Sarah started brightly with a birdie on the opening hole and battled hard in the increasingly difficult conditions to cover the back nine in level par.
Gillian finished with five consecutive pars to make a solid start to her championship campaign, while Niamh will also be content with her opening round which included four birdies.
The second and final round of qualifying takes place on Sunday, after which the top 32 players will progress to the match-play stages of the championship, commencing on Monday.
The championship ends with an 18-hole final on Wednesday morning.

Charlie Douglass beats Tara Watters in final

of English women's amateur championship

Hertfordshire’s Charlie Douglass (Brocket Hall) won the English amateur championship when she defeated Tara Watters (Muswell Hill) of Middlesex 3 and 2 in today's final at Lindrick Golf Club, Yorkshire.
“Wow!” she said as she wiped away floods of tears. “I’m hoping to go to Tour School in January and at the beginning of this year I said to myself that I wanted a big title to show I had a solid amateur career behind me. Now I am on top of the world.”
Charlie, 20, started the tournament with an 87 in the first qualifying round – and it helped to spur her on to victory. “After that I had nothing to lose and winning is just fantastic.”
The left-hander bounced back with a 75 in the second qualifying round and then made her way through the knock-out rounds with a series of impressive wins.
Tara confirmed her place in the final only this morning. Play in her semi-final against Yorkshire’s Emma Brown had to be suspended after 14 holes yesterday because of lightning and they returned to the course to finish at 8.30am.
The Middlesex champion was one up when play was halted but lost the 15th. However, after a string of halved holes she finally won on the 20th.
Tara was soon back on the tee for the final, but got off to a slow start. She missed a makeable putt to lose the first, was two down after Charlie birdied the second and was three down after finding sand on the short third hole.
Afterwards Tara, a sports physiotherapist, said: “I think it was difficult making the switch from the semi-final to the final. I think I was a bit jittery and on edge, but Charlie played great, you can’t take it away from her.”
Charlie looked on course for a quick victory when she birdied the long fifth to get to four up. But Tara began to peg her back, starting with a birdie on the sixth. She then won both the eight and the 10th to reduce the deficit to just one hole.
However, the short 11th, where both players missed the green, proved to be a turning point. Charlie won the hole with a bogey and said afterwards : “That was absolutely crucial because I was only one-up at the time.”
She went on to win the 12th to go to three-up but lost the 13th where Tara played a superb up and down from a deep greenside bunker. The 14th and 15th were halved in par. Both players reached the green on the par five 16th in regulation but Charlie was much closer to the hole and seized her chance – confidently rolling in a 12-footer for a 3 and 2 victory.
“This is wonderful,” she said through the tears.

Good day for Scots in Swiss Ladies Open

as Skarpnord leads from Reid

FROM THE LADIES EUROPEAN TOUR WEBSITE
Norwegian Marianne Skarpnord shot a seven-under 66 to take a one-stroke lead into the final round of the Deutsche Bank Ladies Swiss Open.
The 23-year-old British girls champion of 2003 started the day in a tie for fourth on six-under, three shots off the lead, after opening with rounds of 69 and 71 at Golf Gerre Losone in Ticino.
A birdie-birdie-eagle start in fine weather made the Norwegian the outright leader before a further birdie at the sixth took her two shots clear.
After scoring 31 on the front nine, she added birdies at holes 16 and 18 for an inward total of 35 and was at 13-under 206 for the tournament.
“I’ve been off to a slow start the past two days. There are two par fives at the start and the par three and I thought it would be nice to get a good start for once. I was four under after three,” said Skarpnord, who is seeking her first victory on the Ladies European Tour.
Skarpnord added that she was looking forward to the final round after finishing second to Suzann Pettersen at the AIB Ladies Irish Open last year.
“I’ve been up there before. Tomorrow I just have to go out there and do the same things I’ve done for three days: be patient and just trust myself.”
England’s Melissa Reid shot 68 and sits just one shot back on 12-under. The 21-year-old, who is also seeking her first victory after three runner-up finishes last season and third place at the Women's Australian Open in February, posted three birdies and an eagle at the 447-yard par-five 18th hole.
She explained: “I hit a great drive off 18 and then we had I think 212 to the pin but it was howling into wind. I just said, you know, “What’s the carry to get over the water”, to (my caddie) Paul. He said “You’ll be fine; rip it through and you’ll get there.” I hit probably one of the best three-woods I’ve ever hit and just ended up perfect.
“I started off really bad actually. I couldn’t get anything going. The first two par fives you should really do something and then, knocked it in close on the sixth. I had like a six foot eagle putt and three whacked it. I was pretty mad with myself but managed to birdie the next. I bounced back from it but I stayed very, very patient today.
“I hit a really good tee shot off nine. It was probably one of the best tee shots I’ve hit all day. You just get a feeling with the swing and then I started to hit it well after that really. I made a good birdie on nine and gave myself chances from then in.
“I think if anything it holds me back because I’m so desperate to win. I mean, even this morning, I was so excited about playing. I want to play the best golf I can.”
Australian Karen Lunn, the 1993 Women’s British Open champion, remained in the hunt in third place after a 69 which took her to 10-under-par. Sweden’s Emma Zackrisson (70), Norway’s Lill Kristin Saether (70) and Nicole Gergely (72) share fourth on eight-under with Denmark’s Lisa Holm Sorensen (68), England’s Georgina Simpson (71) and Finland’s Jenni Kuosa (75) on seven-under-par.
The three Scots qualifiers for the weekend action have had a good day.
Krystle Caithness from Fife had a third round 69 to add to her first and second efforts of 71 and 75 over the par-73 course to be in the clubhouse after 54 holes at four-under-par 215 and in joint 17th position ... a great start to her LET career.
Pamela Feggans from Patna Ayrshire had a 70 today after a 76 and 72. She is at one-under-par 218 and sharing 36th place.
The third Scottish rookie to beat the cut, Michele Thomson from McDonald Ellon, matched the par of 73 for the third day in a row to be on 219 and in a tie for 42nd place.

Inaugural UK Intercollegiate Tour

A total of 27 colleges and schools took part in the inaugural UK Intercollegiate Tour.
The UK was split into five areas with each college hosting a one-day stroke-play event for team and individual order of merit points.
The team finals took place at Stonebridge Golf Club. Sussex College, with Dennis Pugh as head coach, won the gross Team Trophy. Filton College, headed by Peter Langford (chairman and co- founder of the ICT) won the net Team Trophy.
A number of international players have played on the inaugural tour which is hoped will be a springboard to higher level golf, similar to the US collegiate system.
More information is available on the website www.CollegeGolf.co.uk
Twenty-seven regional events,m hosted by colleges and schools in the inaugural Intercollegiate Tour, ran an individual Order of Merit with the top 10 from each region being invited to play in the Players' Championships at Collingtree Park.
In windy conditions after the first 18 holes Jackson Ainley (Brockenhurst) was leading the tournament with a two-under-par score. A very windy beginning to the second round saw some players fall away. Brockenhurst team-mate Rob Gowers came through to win by one stroke with an aggregate of 145 (74-71).
The top 10 players of the championship now become the Intercollegiate Tours team for the year with fixtures being sought. David Quin (co-founder of the ICT) said "We are looking to encourage more youngsters to stay in education and pursue their golf with the many new colleges and schools taking golf to a new level. Dangerous weather halts Futures Tour

event at Leawood, Kansas

LEAWOOD, KANSAS: The first round of the $100,000 Mercedes-Benz of Kansas City Championship was suspended this afternoon due to dangerous weather conditions. Seventy-two players completed the first round, while 72 players will return to the Leawood South Country Club on Saturday at 7:00 a.m. local time to finish.
The second round is expected to start around 9:30 a.m. CDT, from both the first and 10th tees. Players will not be paired by score, but will remain in their first-round pairings.
"We were watching a weather system move in from the west that was producing heavy rain, hail and lightning with potential for tornados," said Christy Barks, vice president of tournament operations for the Duramed FUTURES Tour. "We definitely completed more play today than we anticipated."
By day's end, Ashley Prange of Noblesville, Pa., held the clubhouse lead among those who have completed 18 holes. The five-year Tour member recorded a score of 1-over-par (72).
While Prange managed to finish her round before the rain moved in, the wind definitely made its presence known during the morning round.
"It was brutal," said Prange, who is currently a member of the LPGA Tour. "Around the 9th hole, the gusts started coming."
But despite the strong winds, Prange felt she had a good day, needing only 29 putts. The two-time Tour winner rolled in a 20-foot putt for par on number 11.
"I played solid," said Prange. "I putted really well. My putter and I are getting along these days."
Prange ended the day with five birdies, four bogeys and one double-bogey.
Molly Birmingham of Cornelius, N.C., Janell Howland of Boise, Idaho, Laura Crawford of Lancaster, S.C., 2009 tournament winner Misun Cho of Cheongju, South Korea, Selanee Henderson of Apple Valley, Calif., and Noon Huachai of Bangkok, Thailand are in a current clubhouse tie for second at 2-over-par (73).
"It was tough," said Cho, who is currently the Duramed FUTURES Tour's season money leader. "I couldn't putt to save my life. I have no confidence in my putting for some reason, but I'm going to go work on that for tomorrow."
For more information about the Duramed Futures Tour, visit duramedfuturestour.com.
Weather: Breezy in the morning, high in the mid-70s. Play suspended for dangerous weather at 4:32 p.m. CDT.

Rookies clear first hurdle in Ladies Swiss Open

Michele, Krystle & Pamela

make their first LET cut

FROM THE LADIES EUROPEAN TOUR WEBSITE
Finland’s Jenni Kuosa battled the elements to take the halfway lead at the Deutsche Bank Ladies Swiss Open today.
The 31-year-old from Vantaa added a three-under 70 to her opening 67 for a nine-under total of 137 on a wet day at Golf Gerre Losone at the foothills of the Swiss Alps.
Kuosa said that she was just happy to be back on tour after regaining her playing privileges at qualifying school in January. “I’m just enjoying being back here. My goal today was to be patient in the rain and that worked pretty well. I had a few more chances that I didn’t make.”
Australian Karen Lunn shot a six-under 67, including seven birdies, which was the best round of the day. She led in the clubhouse until overtaken by Austrian Nicole Gergely and rising English star Melissa Reid.
A runner-up three times – with two further third place finishes – Reid added a 68 to her opening 71 for a seven-under total and share of second.
Reid is hoping that a fresh approach will help her to register a first victory. The 2008 Ryder Cup Wales Rookie of the Year recently moved house to Loughborough and is working with a new coach, Dave Ridley, at Coxmoor Golf Club in England. She thanked her caddie, Paul Vincent Fernie.
“I’d like to say that Paul did a really good job today. A day like today completely emphasises how important a caddie is. He helped me and did a fantastic job so a massive thank-you to him,” Reid said.
Gergely, who lost to Heather MacRae in a play-off for the British women's open amateur stroke -play championship at Nairn in 2006, posted a second round of 69, having opened with a 70. She posted four birdies but saved two good pars on holes nine and 13.
Stacy Lee Bregman of South Africa, who led on eight-under 65 after the first round, slipped five shots off the pace after a second round of 78.
Meanwhile Lunn, the 1993 Women’s British Open champion, went out in four-under 33 and came home with a further three birdies and one bogey. In so doing she moved into contention from a share of 55th position.
“I played well. 29 putts today as opposed to 34 putts yesterday and that was the difference,” said the seven-time LET tournament winner, who shares fourth place with Norwegian Marianne Skarpnord. “At the end of last year I started to play well again and put a few good rounds together. It’s nice to put one together early in the year.”
Norway’s Lill Kristin Saether, Sweden’s Emma Zackrisson and Britons Georgina Simpson, Lisa Hall and Felicity Johnson tied for sixth place on five-under-par.
The cut, hovering on the one-over mark all day, slipped to 68 players at two-over-par. It was just enough to see through Swiss rookie Caroline Rominger, celebrating her 26th birthday. She is the leading Swiss player and will now contest the weekend.
Ladies' European Tour rookies Michele Thomson (McDonald Ellon), Fifer Krystle Caithness and Pamela Feggans from Patna, Ayrshire all cleared the qualifying hurdle in their very first Continental pro event. Michele (73-72) and Krystle (71-75) hit the 146 mark and are joint 38th as they move into the third round.

Pamela made the cut with nothing to spare. She is tied 60th on 148, made up of a 76 and a 72.. But there was bad news for LET "regulars" Lynn Kenny and Clare Queen. They both missed the cut, Lynn with 78 and 72 for 150, Clare with 77 and 75 for 152.

Charlie Douglass through to final of

English women's closed championship

NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY ENGLISH WOMEN'S GOLF ASSOCIATION
Hertfordshire’s Charlie Douglass has played her way into the final of the English women’s amateur championship at Lindrick, Yorkshire – but she won’t know her opponent until Saturday morning.
Play in the semi-final between Yorkshire’s Emma Brown and Middlesex player Tara Watters was suspended at 6.30pm because of lightning. At that point Tara had just won the 14th to take a one-hole lead and it was hoped the players could return to the course.
But, with the storm continuing to rumble around the course it was eventually agreed that they would return to finish their match at 8.30am on Saturday.
It was the second weather disruption of the day after the morning quarter-finals were delayed by over an hour because of heavy rain. However, Charlie Douglass (pictured above at the Hacienda del Alamo Women's Festival in February) made short work of the weather by sweeping swiftly through both her matches.
She was two-under par when she beat England girl international Holly Clyburn 5 and 4 and level par when she knocked out Hampshire’s Tracey Boyes 6 and 5.
The 20-year-old left-hander from Brocket Hall has been on good form all season but she said: “This is probably the best I have played all year. I’ve been working extremely hard on my short game with Mark Roe and it’s paying off this week.”
She started the championship slowly with a first round 87 which left her wondering if she would even make the match-play stages. But since then she’s played great golf, first hauling herself up the leaderboard with a second round 75 and then working impressively through the knock-out stages.
Charlie is excited by the prospect of the final – but cautious. She still has fresh memories of reaching the 2006 final of the English girls’ championship, only to be disappointed. “I have learned the hard way never get ahead of myself. I shall play it one shot at a time and give every shot 110 per cent. That’s all I can do.”
Tara Watters reached the semi-final by beating England girl international, Heidi Baek of Suffolk. Tara was one down with two to play but won the last two holes to set up her semi-final with Emma Brown, who defeated Charlotte Wild of Cheshire on the 17th.

ENGLISH WOMEN'S CLOSED CHAMPIONSHIP

Holly Clyburn beats title-holder Hannah

Barwood on a day of match-play upsets

NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY ENGLISH WOMEN'S GOLF ASSOCIATION
Girl international Holly Clyburn led a day of upsets when she defeated title-holder Hannah Barwood 3 and 1 in the English women’s amateur championship at Lindrick, Yorkshire today.
“It was a very exciting match and I’m very pleased,” said Holly. “Fingers crossed I can keep it going.”
The two 18-year-olds met in the second round – when the players had to contend with persistent rain - and their match was tight for the first 11 holes. But Holly took charge when she won the 12th, 13th and 14th to go three up.
Hannah pulled one back with a birdie on the long 16th but she left herself too much to do when she missed the green on the 17th – and her opponent found the putting surface in two.
In the first round Holly beat top seed Kym Larratt of Leicestershire.
Meanwhile, Kent’s Jerry Lawrence put on an impressive display to knock out international Rachel Connor of Manchester.
“I played well and this is a big win for me,” said the 19-year-old whose immediate challenge was to get her clothes and equipment dried in her Travelodge room in time for tomorrow’s quarter final.
Hertfordshire’s Charlie Douglass was in fine form as she beat the 2007 title-holder and Yorkshire champion, Naomi Edwards. She had three birdies on the outward nine to set up her 4 and 2 win and said: “I knew I would have to play well to beat Naomi, she’s a fantastic player.” Naomi was one of four Yorkshire players to reach the second round – but only one made it through to the quarter-finals. The county’s title hopes now rest with Emma Brown, who (as Emma Duggleby) has won this championship on two previous occasions, and who had good wins in both her matches.
Lindrick 15-year-old Sophie Godley came safely through her morning match before losing on the 17th to Hampshire’s Tracey Boyes. Despite her defeat she was still smiling broadly: “I’ve had a great time and really enjoyed myself,” was her verdict on her first championship appearance. Kim Crooks beat her first-round opponent on the 19th before losing to girl international Heidi Baek of Suffolk.
Earlier in the day international Rachel Jennings – the third seed – was beaten by Cheshire’s Charlotte Wild, who went on to reach the quarter finals.

Kathleen heads the Crieff qualifiers

by six strokes at Ranfurly Castle

Prestwick St Nicholas's Kathleen Dauthieu had the best net round of the day by far to book one of the eight qualifying places in the LGU Medal Grand Final at Crieff on Sunday, June 7, which were up for grabs at the rescheduled West area final at Ranfurly Castle Golf Club today.
Only 64 of the original field for the rain-abandoned competition on May 6 turned up second time round but even if they had all turned up it is doubtful if anyone would have got close to Kathleen's net 71 off a handicap of 24.
The ladies' par at Ranfurly Castle is 74 and the standard scratch 73. The CSS was 76 on a bright and breezy day.
Kathleen's net return was the best of the day by six clear shots.
The full list of qualifiers for Crieff is:
Silver Division - Christine Whitelaw (Largs) (9) (better inward half). Nichola Ferguson (Clober) (5) 78; Sheila Sergenson (Palacerigg) (11) (better inward half), Anna Boyd (Biggar) (14) 79.
Bronze Division - Kathleen Dauthieu (Prestwick St Nicholas) (25) 71; Margaret Bremner (Caldwell) (23) (better inward half), Joyce McGregor (Windyhill) (22) (better inward half), Helen Abram (Ranfurly Castle) (23) 77 (better inward half).
Helen Abraham, the Ranfurly Castle ladies captain pipped Kay Gillies (Vale of Leven), who had a net 77 off 23 for the fourth and last qualifying place in the Bronze Division.

LADIES EUROPEAN TOUR REPORT

Stacy Bregman leads with a

flawless 65 in Swiss Open

FROM THE LADIES EUROPEAN TOUR WEBSITE

South Africa’s Stacy Lee Bregman enjoyed the perfect start to the Ladies European Tour campaign in Switzerland today.
The 22-year-old from Johannesburg, pictured right by Cal Carson Golf Agency, fired eight birdies for a flawless 65 and grabbed the outright lead in the Deutsche Bank Ladies Swiss Open at Golf Gerre Losone in Ticino.
Bregman, joint runner-up at last year’s Turkish Open, is chasing a maiden victory on the Ladies European Tour.
Her eight-under-par score, which included four birdies on each of the front and back nine, was a personal low round and comes at the beginning of her third season as a pro.
“It’s fantastic. I’ll take it any day. To keep bogeys off your score card means you haven’t really made any mistakes so yeah, it’s fantastic,” she said. “I’ve had a bit of a break through our summer back in South Africa and I’ve been working really hard. I’m focused. I wasn’t expecting as good as that but I’m happy with it. I was expecting a good round.”
Sweden’s Emma Zackrisson, last year’s Spanish Open winner, shot a six-under 67 to share second with Finland’s Jenni Kuosa and India’s Smriti Mehra.
Zackrisson said: “I hit the ball very well. I nailed it to the pin on, like, the last 15 holes.” England’s Lisa Hall, a four-time tournament winner, shares fifth with compatriot Holly Aitchison and Denmark’s Lisa Holm Sorensen on five-under-par.
Hall said: “It’s a special tournament for me because I had a break from the game and this was the first tournament back on a sponsor’s invite three years ago now, in 2006. I finished third that week but it set me up for playing so it has a special place in my heart.”
Aitchison, 22, from Bedford, had a sensational start to life on tour, playing in her first competitive round as a professional. She attended LET Qualifying School at La Manga in Spain in January, after undergoing keyhole surgery to her right knee in November.
She said: “I would have been happy with level par at the start of the week. It was a pleasant surprise. “My putting was quite good today. I hit a lot of greens and holed a lot of putts. I never really hit it too far away, so it was good. I gave myself a lot of birdie chances and took most of them.”
Spain’s Paula Marti, whose brother-in-law Alex Corretja has just started developing British tennis star Andy Murray’s clay court game, shot 69 to tie for eighth place with seven other players. They were Norwegians Marianne Skarpnord and Lill Kristin Saether, Denmark’s Malene Jorgensen, Tara Delaney of Ireland, Finland’s Ursula Wikstrom and the English duo Georgina Simpson and Samantha Head.

Heather MacRae blooms in first

WPGA One-Day Series event

Gullane assistant professional Heather MacRae from Dunblane has set her sights on securing the Ryder Cup Wales 2010 WPGA One-Day Series crown after opening her campaign in winning style today.
The 25-year-old winner of the British women's open amateur stroke-play championship over the Nairn links in 2005 and a Curtis Cup reserve before she turned pro recaptured some of the brilliance of her amateur days to take the honours at Cheshire's Dunham Forest Golf Club with a two-under-par 70 - the only sub-par score.
Teign Valley’s Laura Eastwood, second overall last year and WPGA Order of Merit winner in 2007, was second at with a 73. Huddersfield’s Alex Keighley and Hannah Dargan (Pannal) shared third place on 74 in the first WPGA event of the summer.
MacRae, pictured above, who has just completed the first year of her three-year PGA foundation degree and whose brother is also an assistant pro, made light work of the course as she recovered from a dropped shot at the fifth with birdies at the seventh, eighth and 14th.Heather, a former San Diego University graduate, was making her first appearance in a WPGA event, and the 500-mile round trip from the Lothians was a worthwhile one.
“I’m very happy as this was my first event and it’s a great start,” said Heather.“It shows I can go out there and play golf against the background of working and studying, having had success when I played full-time as an amateur.
“I hardly played last year so this year I want to play more and will certainly look to play in as many of the one day series events as I can and try and come top, though work and travelling can make that a problem.
“I’ll be playing a lot with the men in Tartan Tour events this year and so it’s good to turn up and play with the ladies rather than being out there on my own as the only woman.”
There are a total of seven one-day events which count towards the WPGA Order of Merit, won last year by Wales’ Joanne Pritchard.
The next event is at Stoke by Nayland, Suffolk, on Tuesday, May 26.
Rob Holt, chief executive of Ryder Cup Wales 2010 which is continuing to make a huge impact at all levels including the women's game, revealed they were delighted to support the women's professional game.
"Wales' pledge to make golf more accessible to women is supported by Ryder Cup Wales' backing for the WPGA's one day series schedule," he said.
"As a result of the successful Ryder Cup bid, we are working with partners to encourage more players to the game, with the development of the women's game at the forefront, and events such as these organised by the WPGA are helping to do just that."

Keighley top qualifier for Dundonald:

Cathy Panton-Lewis misses out

NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY PGA
Huddersfield’s Alex Keighley revealed her satisfaction at booking her place in next month’s Glenmuir Women’s PGA Professional Championship – after getting in through the back door 12 months ago.
Keighley, a former England amateur international and LET player, carded a two-over-par 74 at Cheshire’s Dunham Forest to lead home the seven qualifiers for the 36-hole championship at Dundonald Links, near Troon.
Joining Keighley at the venue over June 18 and 19 are 2005 champion Lysa Jones (The Oaks) and Ormskirk’s Alison Gray, who lifted the title in 2003 and 2004, after both finished a shot behind along with Emma Prentice (Gog Magog).
Also qualifying for the final were Maria Tulley (West Cornwall) and Gillian Stewart (Inverness) following four-over-par 76s. Walmley’s Rebecca Wright claimed the final place at five-over.
That meant disappointment for 2007 champion Catherine Panton-Lewis (The Berkshire) as she missed out on automatic qualification and competing in her native Scotland by one shot after carding a six-over-par 78. Panton-Lewis is first reserve.
As for Keighley, she was more than delighted with her performance, given it was her first competitive outing of the season.
“I didn’t play too badly though I left a few shots out there and could’ve been four or five shots better off,” she said.“But it’s the start of the season and my first competitive round of the year so I’m very pleased.
“I wanted to play in a couple of big events this year and I’m glad to have qualified by rights as I got in at Moortown last year as a reserve.”
Keighley went on to finish sixth at Moortown where the championship won by Devon’s Tracy Loveys after the 36 holes were condensed into one day. Rain washed out the opening day.

Royal St David's superb

setting for what could

be best of 'British'

NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY THE LADIES GOLF UNION
The 106th staging of the Ladies’ British Open Amateur Championship over the classic Royal St David’s Golf Club links at Harlech in North Wales promises to be one of the best in the series which began at Royal Lytham & St Annes in 1893 and produced the first of a hat-trick of wins by England’s Lady Margaret Scott.
No chance this year of any player making a successful defence of the coveted title at next month’s championship which will open with two stroke-play qualifying rounds on Tuesday and Wednesday, June 9 and 10, producing 64 qualifiers for the match-play stages which climax with the semi-finals and an 18-hole final on Saturday, June 13.
Last year’s winner at North Berwick, Sweden’s Anna Nordqvist has turned professional and will be playing on the Ladies’ European Tour when the capacity field of 144 with handicaps of three and under is assembling under the shadow of Harlech Castle, one of the most scenic seaside venues in Wales.
There is one competitor who does have her name on the Championship Cup already. She’s Carlota Ciganda from Pamplona, Spain, who will celebrate her 19th birthday on June 1.
Carlota, pictured above with the championship trophy by Cal Carson Golf Agency, beat Anna Nordqvist in the 2007 championship final at Alwoodley, Leeds but decided not to defend the title last year so that she could take part in a qualifying competition for the United States women’s amateur championship.
Those who maintain there are no “favourites” in match-play golf – particularly female match-play golf, are probably right but Ciganda has a golfing CV which suggests she has a very good chance indeed of chalking up a fifth triumph for Spain in the last eight years, following in the divot marks of Marta Prieto (Ladybank, 2001), Elisa Serramia (Lindrick, 2003), Belen Mozo (Royal Co Down, 2006) and Carlota Ciganda herself (Alwoodley, 2007).
Carlota has been a student at Arizona State University only since January but is already ranked No 1 on the American women’s college circuit.
Incidentally, three of the top 10 (No 4 Azahara Munoz (Spain) and No 8 Jodi Ewart (England), six of the top 20 and 11 of the top 40 from the US college rankings will be in the field at Royal St David’s.
It really is a field of worldwide international quality with 17 countries, outwith Great Britain & Ireland, being represented in the list of entries. Germany (12), Netherlands (11), France (9), Spain (8) and Sweden (7) top the Continental challenge numerically while Canada (6), United States (4) and Australia (4) head the overseas element.
There will be two sets of twin in action – the Hedwalls from Sweden and the Maguires from Co Cavan, Northern Ireland who will be making their debuts in the championship.
Caroline and Jacqueline Hedwall from Barseback were 20 on May 13. They are both at college in the United States, Caroline at Oklahoma State University (she is ranked No 12 in the USA) and Jacqueline (a much better player than her No 112 ranking suggests) at Louisiania State University.
In last year’s “British” at North Berwick, the Hedwalls won their way through to a semi-final “Family at War” situation. Caroline beat her twin 4 and 3 and went to lose to Anna Nordqvist by 3 and 2 in an all-Swedish final.
In the other semi-final last year, Nordqvist beat Scotland’s Roseanne Niven from Perth by 2 and 1, Roseanne having beaten the new NCAA women’s champion, Azahara Munoz, by one hole in the quarter-finals.
Roseanne went on to beat compatriot Kylie Walker in a play-off for the Ladies’ British open amateur stroke play championship in Northern Ireland later in the summer. Niven is a student at the University of California-Berkeley.
Leona and Lisa Maguire from the Slieve Russell club will not be 15 until November 30 but already they are in the Ladies Golf Union’s squad for the GB&I v Continent of Europe match for the Vagliano Trophy in Hamburg on July 24-25.
Leona beat Lisa in last year’s Irish women’s closed amateur championship final and has won everything she has played in this year – the French Under-21s championship, the Helen Holm Scottish women’s amateur stroke-play championship at Troon and the Woodenbridge Scratch Cup. Lisa is never far behind her – she was joint third in the “Helen Holm” – and both played for Europe in last year’s Junior Ryder Cup match in America.
Northern Ireland has another in-form contender, former world universities champion Danielle McVeigh (Royal County Down) who spent two years on the US college circuit. She finished close on the Maguires’ heels in the “Helen Holm” at the end of April and then followed that up with victory in the Welsh women’s open stroke-play at Royal Porthcawl.
The Maguires are not the youngest in the field for Harlech.
That honour belongs to Charley Hull, a three-handicapper from Kettering Golf Club, Northamptonshire. Charley, had her 13th birthday on March 20. She first began to make a name for herself outside Kettering when she won the Ladies’ Golf Union Health Perception event a few years back.
This will be the sixth Ladies’ British open amateur championship at Royal St David’s Golf Club. The previous winners were:

1926 Cecil Leitch (England).
1949 Frances Stephens (England).
1960 Barbara McIntire (United States).

CLUB & COURSE HISTORY
Harlech is a fascinating combination of history, mountain views, bracing see breezes and the home of Royal St. David's Gold Club. The youngest of what might be called Britain's senior clubs, Royal St. David's was founded in 1894 at the very end of the first great golfing boom, when the sport at last ceased to be an almost exclusively Scottish pastime.Having heard of the pre-eminence of St Andrews , and conscious that the English had a St George's at Sandwich, founding fathers, The Hon. Harold Finch-Hatton, fourth son of the Earl of Winchilsea and Nottingham, and William Henry More, then Crown Agent for Wales, thought the name of St. David's seemed logical and appropriate for this new Welsh initiative.

It turned out to be an inspired piece of what would today be known as 'branding,' and helped enormously to launch Harlech upon the golfing world at large.
Royal St. David's is indeed royal. Edward VII gave the club his patronage and the Duke of Windsor (Edward VIII) , while he was Prince of Wales, captained the club in 1934.

Under the stern gaze of Harlech's mighty castle, Royal St. David's links course occupies the dune land between the rugged hillside and the Irish Sea with the majestic Snowdonian Mountains adding a dramatic backdrop. The view seaward from the 16th tee, affords magnificent vistas of the Llyn peninsular across Tremadog Bay.
The course is noted for a succession of long, testing par-4s plus five short holes, which vary in length and direction, with large, true greens a feature.

QUOTES:
“Wales has been put well and truly on the golfing map by Ryder Cup Wales in 2010. In the meantime, we are looking forward in great anticipation to the Ladies’ British Open Championship in June. Our course is in excellent condition and will test the ladies’ golfing skills.”
David Reidford, Captain, Royal St David’s Golf Club.

Royal St David’s is the kind of links course that will produce a true and worthy champion. It has always done so in the past. You have to be a straight hitter and the judgement of the second shots is so important here. There are some big greens and it is not enough just to hit them, you have to get your shot up to the flag or you can have some long putts indeed. Like all links courses, wind is an important factor here. It’s marvellous for the club to host such a
championship with such an excellent entry.”
Bridget Jackson MBE, Chairman of the Ladies’ Committee, Vice-President of Royal St David’s Golf Club & Vice President of The Ladies’ Golf Union. (Bridget was beaten at the 37th in the 1964 Ladies British open amateur championship final at Princes by America’s Carol Sorenson).

“I love links golf and it doesn’t get much purer than here at Royal St David’s. It’s a great course, one of my favourites.”
Sir Bob Charles (New Zealand), Open champion, 1961.

It is no exaggeration to say that Royal St David’s is one of the finest golf courses in the world.”

Bernard Gallacher, Ryder Cup captain, 1993 & 1995.

Leicestershire’s Kym Larratt is

top seed in English championship

Leicestershire’s Kym Larratt tamed the winds to lead the qualifiers for the match-play stages of the English women’s amateur championship at Lindrick, Yorkshire.
Kym added a solid 76 to her first-round 77 to finish one shot clear of the field on another day of strong and blustery winds.
“It’s fantastic,” she said “I really like match-play and if I can just keep playing steadily I should be fine.”
Her play won the approval of her father, Bob Larratt, a European seniors’ tour professional who gave her tips on course management during the practice round.
“He keeps ringing me straight after each round – and he’s happy!” said Kym whoo now meets England girl international Holly Clyburn in the first round.
The low score of the day came from another girl international, 15-year-old Heidi Baek who shot a one-over 73 for a total of 154 and qualified in second place. It’s her first appearance in the tournament and the Suffolk champion was excited to play alongside Yorkshire star Emma Brown.
“I was determined to qualify – that was my first goal,” said Heidi. “Now I will just try my best in the match-play. It’s going to be tough because the standard here is really high. I’ll learn something as well.”
Heidi was one under par for the outward half of her second round, helped by two birdies. She came home in two over, with one birdie, one bogey and a double – where she got stuck in a bunker – on her card.
England international Rachel Jennings, from Staffordshire, was third qualifier with rounds of 79, 75.
“That was good because it’s so windy and such a slog. You have to hit it, hit it and hit it again and just keep going. Now I’m looking forward to tomorrow.”
Lancashire’s Cori Lee also shot a second round 75 to reach the matchplay stages – and to celebrate her return to competitive golf. She played only one event last year because of an injury to her left arm.
“It’s really nice to be back playing again, whether it’s good or bad. I used to get a bit frustrated but now I can take the rough with the smooth. I’m just trying to get the sharpness back in my short game.”
Cori has been quick to return to good form. Already this season she has won the Leveret and had pleasing results at the Roehampton Gold Cup and the Whittington Trophy. Overnight leader Hannah Turland qualified comfortably when she returned 82 for a total of 158. The 14-year-old Wiltshire champion went through in 10th place.
It was a good day for the youngsters. Lancashire 14-year-old Emily Taylor and Lindrick’s Sophie Godley, 15, both secured places in the matchplay.
Defending champion Hannah Barwood, 18, from Gloucestershire, improved her position with a second round 77 and qualified 17th.

Sally Watson loses to a boy in Leadbetter

Academy match-play tourney final

Curtis Cup player Sally Watson lost to a boy in the final of the inaugural David Leadbetter Golf Academy match-play tournament this week (on Monday) at the IMG Academies Country Club, Florida.
The 17-year-old from Edinburgh, a resident student at the academy at Bradenton, Florida, lost by 3 and 2 to Michael Chen, both players playing around 108 holes each in the three-day competition which started with a field of 64 boys and girls.
The boys played off the back tees - a course of some 6,900yd - the girls from more forward tees, a course of 6,300yd. It was a scratch tournament with a random draw.
Sally beat three boys en route to the final but Chen went four up after seven holes with the help of a hat-trick of birdies and Sally, though she played very well, could not pull him back even though she was eight under par for the last 32 holes she played!
Sally, a contender for the GB&I team for the Vagliano Trophy match in Hamburg in July and also the Scotland line-up for the European women's team championship at Bled, Slovenia, earlier that month, not to mention the European team for the Junior Solheim Cup match at Aurora, Illinois on August 18-19, returns to this country to play in the British women's open amateur championship at Royal St David's Golf Club, Harlech in North Wales from June 9 to 13.
She will return to America to play in the United States women's amateur championship - players in last year's Curtis Cup match at St Andrews are exempt from taking part in the qualifying competitions - and again in late August to enrol at Stanford University, California.

Hannah Turland, 14, leads

English championship

NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY ENGLISH WOMEN'S GOLF ASSOCIATION
Wiltshire 14-year-old Hannah Turland shot 76 to set the first round pace in the English women’s amateur championship at a windy Lindrick in Yorkshire today.
Hannah, a past winner of the English girls’ U13 title, is one shot clear of the field and described her four-over par score as “Pretty good.”
She went on: “I could have done better – but I was pleased with it. This is a really tough course, especially when the wind blows.”
Hannah, who has just retained her Wiltshire county title, played a cautious game to beat the conditions. She reached the turn at one-over par and although a lost ball on the short 11th cost her a double bogey, she played the remaining holes in one-over.
This is Hannah’s first appearance in the championship and she’s loving the experience. “I wanted to play in bigger competitions, I think I’m playing well enough and this is a really, really nice course,” said Hannah (pictured above at the Hacienda del Alamo Winter Festival where she won the Costa Calida Foursomes in partnership with Hayley Davis (Ferndown) in mid-February).
She’s one shot ahead of Leicestershire’s Kym Larratt, who was given a few valuable tips in practice by her father, European seniors’ tour professional Bob Larratt. “My course management isn’t the best so my dad came along for the practice round and gave me some advice.”
She put it to good use: “It was tough today because of the wind and it was a matter of trying to keep the ball straight and hole a few putts. I did that most of the way round and I’m happy with my score. I never had worse than a bogey.”
A further shot behind, on 78, are three players: Warwickshire’s Hannah Coles, who has been playing well on the US women’s college circuit; her county colleague Charlotte Dalton and Middlesex golfer Tara Watters.
Ellie Robinson and Sara Garbutt lead the Yorkshire challenge in a group on 79. They are tied, among others, with the international Rachel Jennings of Staffordshire and French U18 champion Holly Clyburn of Lincolnshire.
Naomi Edwards, the Yorkshire champion and the 2007 winner of this event, returned 80 and shares 11th place.
Lindrick’s representatives include 15-year-old Sophie Godley, from EWGA’s Select North Squad. She scored 82 to give herself a good chance of qualifying for the matchplay. She is in a group in 24th place which includes former title-holder Emma Brown, also of Yorkshire.
Defending champion Hannah Barwood of Gloucestershire scored 83, alongside the youngest player in the field, Emily Taylor, 14, of Lancashire. They are among seven players sharing 34th place.
After tomorrow’s second stroke-play round the leading 32 players will go forward to the matchplay knockout stages of the championship.

Defending champion Laura Walker (Muckhart), the Scottish girls' match-play champion at Powfoot in 2002, did not have the best of nights, but, with an 84, she qualified in 11th position and is a dangerous "floater" in the lower half of the draw.

Fife CLGA – HICKORY CHALLENGE

Fife County Ladies Golf Association continued its centenary celebrations with a ‘Hickory Challenge’ at Kingarrock Golf Course, Hill of Tarvit on Saturday 9th May. Despite the atrocious conditions about thirty ladies turned up in period dress to participate in the event.

Prior to teeing off, the ladies were warmly greeted by David Anderson in the Forester Cottage and offered a wee glass of port to get into the spirit of the game. David explained a bit about the history of the course and the different golf balls used. Players were then armed with 5 original hickory clubs, 3 'wait for it' golf balls, some red 'reddy' tees and an old canvas and leather bag.

The skies began to brighten a little and the players set off for the course. Unfortunately the gap in the clouds did not last for long and the majority of players only managed a few holes. However, three keen individuals did manage to complete the 9 holes - Susan Jackson, Elaine Moffat and Jane Whiteford. Despite the cold and wet conditions, Susan Jackson managed to claim a new Ladies course record for the 1928 golf ball with her score of 45. Well Done Susan.

Afterwards, players were given a glass of ginger beer and a piece of delicious homemade cake (and, more importantly in the circumstances, a hot cup of coffee and a towel). Medals were awarded to Susan Jackson for the best Scratch score (45) and to Elaine Moffat for the best Handicap score (nett 45). The prize for the best dressed person, judged by Joan Lawrence, was won by Anne Wilson from Ladybank.

Cristie Kerr moves to top of LPGA money

table with another Michelob Ultra win

Cristie Kerr, title winner in 2005, broke a four-way logjam with a birdie at the 15th hole in the final round and went on to win again the LPGA Tour's Michelob Ultra Open, with a 16-under-par total of 286 at Kingsmill Resort & Spa, Williamsburg, Virgina.
Kerr, who also won in 2005, went from one shot behind to the lead when Song-Hee Kim of South Korea made a double bogey on the par-4 16th and Kerr made her birdie moments later a hole behind.
The putt gave Kerr a 16-under total, and when other challengers In-Kyung Kim and third-round co-leader, Kent-born Australian Lindsey Wright, also bogeyed, Kerr led by two shots with two holes left.
Kerr held on for her 12th career victory and earned the $330,000 winner's cheque, moving her to the top of the money list on the LPGA Tour for the season with more than $700,000.
In-Kyung Kim finished second when Wright bogeyed the finishing hole.
Wright, who shared the third-round lead with Kerr, and Song-Hee Kim shared third at 271.
Lorena Ochoa, whose 13-under total after two rounds was a tournament record, started the day five shots back, and a birdie on the first hole hinted that she might make a charge.
But the world's top-ranked player followed with bogeys on three of her next four holes and faded.
Only half of the top 10 finishers shot under par, and none was better than 3 under.
Wright, a six-year tour member seeking her first victory, fell two back when she missed the green with her approach at the difficult par-4 16th, chipped on and two-putted.
This might be the seventh and last staging of the Michelob Ultra Open. It could be another victim of the Credit Crunch.

Michelle Wie enters Ricoh Women's

British Open at Royal Lytham

NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY IMG
Michelle Wie is the latest star to confirm her entry into the 2009 Ricoh Women’s British Open at Royal Lytham & St Annes Golf Club, July 30 to August 2.
Michelle, who has been combining golf with her studies at Stanford University for the past couple of years, secured her 2009 LPGA card at qualifying school and is looking forward to playing her first full year on the LPGA Tour.
Michelle explained the benefits she is enjoying as a full LPGA Tour member, “I think the fact that I know that I can play more than six tournaments a year allows me to build on my progress each week and work towards getting my first LPGA Tour win. I feel like this season represents a ‘fresh start’ for me and I’m able to work towards the goals I set for myself. Obviously winning the Ricoh Women’s British Open would be a huge accomplishment and it is certainly something I want to experience in my career.”
Michelle’s best finish in the Women’s British Open was 3rd place in 2005 when she won the leading amateur medal. She is delighted to be returning to Royal Lytham & St Annes Golf Club having missed the Championship last year. She explained, “I’m really looking forward to playing in the Ricoh Women’s British Open this summer. I enjoy the challenges that links golf presents and think I’ve have handled it pretty well in the past. I played at Royal Lytham in 2006 and finished tied 26th so I will be looking to use that experience to help me improve on that finish. I’ve really enjoyed all my visits to the UK and I’ve especially enjoyed the experience of playing on world famous links golf courses in front of the knowledgeable British golf fans. Travelling around the world is definitely one of the best things about being a golf professional and I am looking forward to going back to the North West of England.”
Michelle will be joining a star-studded field including defending champion, Jiyai Shin, 2009 Kraft Nabisco Champion, Brittany Lincicome, Natalie Gulbis, Gwladys Nocera, Suzann Pettersen and Paula Creamer.
All of the world’s top players are expected to play and the event is given additional importance given that it will be the final qualifying event before the teams are announced for the 2009 Solheim Cup matches.
Shona Malcolm, Ladies’ Golf Union’s CEO, observed; “I am delighted that Michelle Wie will be in the field this year. She has a lot of fans in the UK who have followed her career since her phenomenal 3rd place finish as the leading amateur at Royal Birkdale in 2005. I know there were a lot of disappointed youngsters who hoped to see Michelle play last year and they will be thrilled to hear she will be will be returning to Royal Lytham to compete for this coveted title.”
This year’s Championship will take place at Royal Lytham & St Annes Golf Club in the Northwest of England. Its credentials as a championship venue are impressive. As well as holding three Women’s British Opens - in 1998, 2003 and 2006 - Royal Lytham has hosted an impressive 10 men’s Open Championships and two Ryder Cups.
With Annika Sorenstam, the winner at Royal Lytham in 2003, recently retired from the Tour and Sherri Steinhauer, the 1998 and 2006 Champion, having played no events in over 6 months, the North West golf fans look set to witness a new winner crowned at Royal Lytham and St Annes Golf Club in August.

Cara Gruber wins Ness Open by

one stroke from Jane Turner

Royal Dornoch's Cara Gruber repelled the "invaders" from the south to score a home win by a Northern Counties player in the Ness Open, an SLGA 36-hole Order of Merit event, at Inverness Golf Club today.
In near-perfect conditions, Cara shared the lead with British universities champion Jane Turner (Craigielaw) on the 73 mark at the halfway stage, two ahead of Kelsey MacDonald (Nairn Dunbar), the Scottish Under-21 champion, and Midlothian women's champion Claire Hargan (Mortonhall).
Gruber repeated her opening round for a total of 146 - two under the combined CSS of 74 for each round - to win by one shot from Turner who had a 74 for 147.
"It really was close between Jane and I for most of the way," said Cara later. "I was three better than her over the front nine of the final round but then she got it back to one after 13 holes. Both of us birdied the 14th and then Jane birdied the 15th to put us level with three holes to play.
"Jane had a bogey at the 16th to my par. I then birdied the 17th to go two ahead before Jane birdied the 18th where I had a par, leaving me one stroke ahead of her at the finish."
MacDonald finished third on 148 after a second-round 73.
Laura Murray (Alford), a former Ness Open winner, came up through the field with an afternoon score of 71 - the best of the tournament - to finish fourth on 149.
Gruber, who plays off one, also won the handicap trophy with a net total of 144. She is pictured with the two trophies (by courtesy of Inverness Golf Club).
