Leona Maguire in quarter-finals

but Lisa and Rachel go down

There was mixed lucky for the Maguire twins from Ireland in today's first day of the match-play stages in the French lady junior championships at St Cloud, Paris.
Lisa Maguire, the No 5 seed, beat Alessandra De Luigi (Italy), the No 28 qualifier, by 5 and 3 in the first round but lost by 2 and 1 in the second round to the No 21 seed, Sophia Popov (Germany).
Meanwhile her sister Leona, the No 6 seed, cleared the first hurdle with a 5 and 4 win over Fanny Vuignier (Switzerland), the No 27 qualifier) and won again in the afternoon. Leona had a good 4 and 2 win over the French player Rosanna Crepiat who has figured prominently in both the Portuguese and Spanish women's open amateurs already this year.
Leona, pictured above, now plays Karianne Hillaas (Norway), the No 14 seed, in Sunday's quarter-finals.
Denmark's Daisy Nielsen, last of the 32 qualifiers, pulled off a shock win over the top seed, Mireia Prat (Spain) in the first round, beating her at the 19th.
Daisy showed that was no fluke by reaching the last eight with a 4 and 3 win over the No 17 seed, Manon Molle (France).
Defending champion Rachel Jennings (Izaak Walton) tumbled out in the first round. She lost at the 19th to France's Laura Chemarin.
England girl international Holly Clyburn swept into the quarter finals of the No 2 tournament, the Cartier Trophy.
The 18-year-old from Woodhall Spa, Lincolnshire, played excellent golf to defeat Spain’s Camilla Hedberg Bertrand by 7 and 6.
Now, Holly meets Mandy Goyos, whose mother, Angela, comes from Lancashire. The Cartier Trophy is contested by the top 16 girls, aged 18 and under, who missed out on a place in the championship match-play draw for the Esmond Trophy.

French lady junior championship at St Cloud

Title-holder Rachel is only

English qualifier

If England's youngsters had a joy day in the Scottish Under-16 girls' open at Craigielaw, their elders did not do so well in the second qualifying round of the French lady junior championship at Paris St Cloud Golf Club.
Defending champion Rachel Jennings, pictured by courtesy of Tom Ward Photography, made her way comfortably into the leading 32 who qualifyied for the match-play stages. She had rounds of 75 and level par 71 - her second round including an eagle and two birdies - for a total of 146.
That was six shots behind the top seed Mireia Prat from France with 73 and 67 for 140.
Her first round opponent is Laura Chemarin of France, who qualified in 23rd place.
Rachel, 20, from Izaak Walton Golf Club in Staffordshire, is England’s sole survivor in the championship match-play for the Esmond Trophy.
The cut-off mark was seven-over-par 149 or better.
Lincolnshire’s Holly Clyburn (Woodhall Spa) was 45th overall with scores of 78 and 74 for 152.
That put her into the knock-out stages of the Cartier Trophy, contested by the top 16 players, aged 18 and under, who failed to qualify for the Esmond Trophy.
Holly will play Camilla Hedberg Bertrand of Spain in the first round.
There was disappointment for the other four members of the English Women’s Golf Association squad who failed to qualify for the match-play events.
British girls championship finalist at Monifieth last summer, Kelly Tidy (Royal Birkdale) slumped from a good first round of 73 to an 80 today and failed to make the grade with 155.
So too did Alex Peters (Notts Ladies) with 79 and 76 for 155.
English women's champion Hannah Barwood totalled 156 with 77 and 79 while Rachel Connor (Manchester) had scores of 79 and 84 for 163.
The Irish wonder twins, Lisa and Leona Maguire did very well indeed to qualify in fifth and sixth places in the championship flight. Lisa scopred 74 and 70 for 144, the same total as Leona who did it the other way round, 70 followed by a 74.

It's a triple whammy for the English

at Scottish Under-16 girls' event

England dominated the Scottish Under-16 girls' open stroke-play golf championship to such an extent that only Lesley Atkins (Minto) and Eilidh Briggs (Kilmacolm) of the host country finished in the top 20 at the 36-hole event at Craigielaw Links, near Edinburgh.,
Lesley, the Scottish Under-14 girls' champion from last year, had rounds of 78 and 73 for a nine-over-par total of 151.
She finished fourth in a field of over 100, eight shots behind the winner, Hayley Davis from the Ferndon club, Dorset. Hayley, undoubtedly a Curtis Cup star in the making, had scores of 73 and one-under-par 70 for one-over 143 to win by three shots from Wiltshire's Hannah Turland (Tidworth Garrison) with Ashley Cramond (Warwickshire) completing an England 1-2-3 on 149.
Hayley Davis showed her class by coming home in her second round in two-under-par 34, despite a double bogey 6 at the 12th. She had five birdies in all, at the sixth, 10th, 11th, 13th and 15th after a slow start in which she bogeyed the first and third.
Atkins will be rueing a double-bogey 7 at the 18th in the first round. She birdied the same hole in the second round.
Eilidh Briggs had scores of 82 and 78 for 160 and a share of 17th place.
Julie Vass (Tain) was the leading player from the North and North-east. She finished joint 22nd with a pair of 81s for 162.
As to be expected, England's two squads finished first and second with totals of 298 and 299 in the team event, despite having a leading player, Heidi Baek, disqualified for not signing her first-round scorecard, and another, English schoolgirls champion Jamie-Leigh Voss, unfit to continue after only nine holes on Thursday. Baek's second-round score of 72 was allowed to count towards the team total.
Scotland 1 (Lesley Atkins, Eilidh Briggs and Hannah McCook) finished third on 311, a shot ahead of Wales' Chloe Williams, Katy Bradbury and Amy Boulden.
Individual and team winners, England completed a triple whammy when Nicola Haynes (Gosforth Park Ladies) won the leading handicap award with net scores of 68 and 69 off a handicap of 11 for a total of 137.
That was two shots ahead of Alison Goodwin (Glenbervie) (handicap 14) who edged out Nicole Underhill (Falkirk Tryst) (handicap 22) on the better net second round.

Michele Thomson's first pro win comes in Florida:
This might be start of something big ...

By COLIN FARQUHARSON

Rookie tour professional Michele Thomson from Ellon was so excited after scoring her first win in the paid ranks - in a SunCoast Ladies Tour event in Florida - on Thursday that she completely forgot about taking her golf clubs away with her from the Country Club of Mount Dora venue.
Michele had to make a 30-mile return journey to be reunited again but nothing could upset her on one of the happiest days of her golfing career.
A $2,000 first prize is will undoubtedly be one of the smallest financial rewards the Aberdeenshire girl earns in the years to come but a first win as a professional is a symbolic moment, one to be remembered and treasured.
Leader by three shots after the first round, played in the 30 to 40mph gusts, the strongest winds seen in that area of Florida for several years, Michele had slipped back a bit into a triple tie for the top spot after 36 holes.
But, on the last day, she responded to the pressure and rose to the occasion in a manner that augurs well for her forthcoming debut on the Ladies European Tour, expected to be the Swiss Ladies Open in mid-May. As she did not quite gain full membership of the LET at the Qualifying School in Spain, Michele has to wait to see if the exempt players take up all the places available in the Swiss field.
The 21-year-old Curtis Cup player and Scottish women's amateur champion at Lossiemouth last year, signed off with two-under-par 70 in Florida after earlier rounds of 76 and 74 for a two-over-par total of 220 to win the $2,000 first prize by a single shot.
New York State amateur Kristina Wong, who had a 71 for 221, finished second with Germany's Miriam Nagl from Berlin coming third with a 72 for 222.It was not the first cash prize Michele has won in her first month or two as a pro ... she earned Ł25 for reaching the semi-finals of the North-east Alliance foursomes tournament at Murcar Links last month!
It was her experience of playing in the normally windy wintry conditions at the Alliance that helped her build such a big lead on the first day.
Michele flies from Florida to Houston on Saturday to stay with her oil executive father Graham who was transferred to Texas two or three months ago.
"There is no SunCoast Ladies Pro Tour event next week so we thought it best that Michele should come up to Houston and stay with me before going back to Florida a week on Sunday for the next two tournaments," said Graham Watson.
"Basically, Michele wanted to use the SunCoast Series as a warm-up to get in some competitive golf before the LET tees off and she was pleasantly surprised thet there were 2008 LPGA, current LeT and 2009 Futures Tour players in the field in Florida.
"She feels that hard winter work in the gym and ont he range with her coach, Neil Marr, and the support from fewllow McDonald Ellon tour pro Ross Cameron has been very worthwhile over the past few months."
Michele was also surprised that the Florida galleries seemed to be rooting for her.
"Lots of them told me that they had been on golfing holidays to Scotland and loved everything to do with Scotland - so they were giving me a cheer for that. They followed my group through the second and third rounds, which was really encouraging considering I was a stranger to them," said Michele.
The Aberdeenshire player is hoping that the Florida win might help her in the uphill fight to gain some sponsorship to play on the Ladies European Tour.
"It has been a struggle. Golf sponsorship seems to have been hit really hard by the downturn in the economy but there is some glimmer of hope on the horizon. I have had two individuals who have contacted me recently and want to speak to me on the subject of sponsorship when I get back to Scotland," said Michele who thinks that may be the way ahead for her, i.e. no one big sponsor but several smaller ones.
"If anybody is interested in helping me in my first season on the LET, they should get in touch with me through McDonald Ellon Golf Club.
"Both Titleist and Wilson Staff had stepped up recently and been very supportive. I am really grateful to them. The Paul Lawrie Golf Foundation has also given me a lot of backing. Paul sends me regular text messages of support."
Could Michele Thomson follow in the footsteps of namesake and fellow North-east golfer Muriel Thomson who became a regular winner on the forerunner of the Ladies European Tour after gaining Curtis Cup honours as an amateur?
Muriel eventually retired as a tour pro in 1989 and very soon after she became the fledgling Portlethen Golf Club's first club professional. She is still there yet and plays very little golf but still follows the female golf scene from afar.
"For Michele to win anywhere is great at this stage of her pro career. To win in a foreign country is fantastic and it must work wonders for her confidence," said Muriel who won nine times in Britain and Europe as a professional.
"My only advice to Michele would be to play where she is happy and where she is comfortable in playing, not where she thinks people expect her to play. I felt I came under a lot of pressure to go to America at a certain stage when I didn't really want to go. Looking back, it was a turning point in my career. I was never as good again as I had been.
"But Michele's young, she has all these things to find out for herself. I wish her luck. It's important that she is happy on and off the course."

French junior lady championship qualifying rounds

A Tidy performance by Kelly

is England's best at St Cloud

NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY ENGLISH WOMEN'S GOLF ASSOCIATION
Lancashire’s Kelly Tidy was England’s leading scorer on the first day of the French lady junior championship at St Cloud Golf Club, near Paris.
The 17-year-old from Royal Birkdale, pictured right by Cal Carson Golf Agency, shot a two-over par 73 in the first round of stroke-play qualifying and is currently in ninth place.
Kelly, who represented Europe in last year’s junior Ryder Cup after reaching the final of the British girls open championship at Monifieth, had three consecutive birdies in her round from the 14th.
Defending champion Rachel Jennings is two shots behind after opening her campaign with a four-over 75, which included just one birdie. She is lying 25th. After 36 holes of stroke-play the leading 32 players will qualify for the match-play stages of the championship. That means the other four members of the English Women’s Golf Association squad need to improve their positions in the second round to keep their title hopes alive.

English have ups & downs

There was good and bad news for followers of England's fortunes on the first day of the Scottish Ladies Golfing Association Under-16 girls' 36-hole open stroke-play championship at windy Craigielaw Links, near Edinburgh.
The good news? Hayley Davis (Ferndown), winner of two Under-16 girls' events at the Hacienda del Alamo Women's Winter Festival in Spain in February, is continuing in excellent form.
She has set the first-round clubhouse target of 73, two-over-par and only one over the eventual CSS on a quite windy day which began with heavy rain. Hayley birdied the first, the long 11th and par-4 14th but dropped shots at the third, seventh, ninth, 13th and 18th in halves of 37 (two over par) and 36 (level).
Her golfing buddy, Hannah Turland (Tidworth Garrison) chased her up with a 74 which included a double-bogey 7 at the fourth.
Although she also bogeyed the fifth, ninth and 16th, Hannah did produce birdies at the short 10th and the 15th for halves of 39 (four over par) and 35 (one under).
The bad news? Jamie-Leigh Voss, the current English schoolgirls champion from Kirkby Muxloe, was taken ill on the course and retired after slumping to eight over par for only nine holes (she played the second nine first) and had to ferried to the nearest doctor by referee Gillian Kirkwood.
And later Haedi Beck (Felixstowe Ferry), one of the leading English players, was disqualified for failing to sign her scorecard which had added up to 81 with a triple bogey 8 at the fourth and a double bogey 6 at the 12th.
Scottish Under-14 girls champion Lesley Atkins (Minto), pictured above, is the big home hope, despite a four-putt green on her way to a 78, five shots off the pace but in a creditable joint fifth position.
Lesley birdied the long second and also the ninth but sandwiched three bogeys, at the third, fifth, and eighth between them in an outward half of one-over-par 36.
She had no birdies to compensate for a rash of bogeys after the turn, at the 11th, 12th, 16th and 17th, before she finished on a low note with a double bogey 7 at the long last hole for 42 home.
One behind Atkins is home-course player Gabrielle MacDonald with halves of 42 and 37 for 79.
Scotland could claim the best, most accurate shot of the day - Mhairi McKay (West Kilbride) had a hole in one at the third (132yd) on her way to an 81 (37-44).

Wind drops and now Michele is in

triple tie for Florida lead

Michele Thomson, the rookie Ladies European Tour professional from Ellon, will start the third and final round of the SunCoast Ladies Tour tournament in Florida in a three-way tie for the lead at Country Club of Mount Dora.
The wind dropped for the second day's play at this elevated course well above sea level, robbing the 21-year-old Curtis Cup player of her big advantage over the field which had seen her go three shots clear, even with a four-over-par round of 76 on Tuesday.
In the calmer conditions, she posted a second-round 74 for a 36-hole tally of 150 and was joined on the six-over-par mark by New York State amateur Kristina Wong, who returned an excellent 69, 12 shots better than she managed in the wind, and Germany's Miriam Nagle who lopped 10 strokes off her first round score with a 70.
Michele is hoping to play several events on this Florida ladies' satellite tour so that she can put an edge on her game before she makes her debut on the Ladies European Tour in the Swiss Open in the middle of May.

Whittington Trophy 2009

Lucky for someone

It will be lucky for someone when the 13th Whittington Ladies Trophy tees off at Whittington Heath Golf Club, near Lichfield, in Staffordshire on Tuesday 14th April.
Whittington, founded in 1886, is one of the oldest clubs in the Midlands and its fresh-faced 36-hole strokeplay title is building up a tradition of its own. Previous winners include Melissa Reid, a young Englishwoman now making a name for herself as a professional with the backing of Sir Clive Woodward of Rugby World Cup winning fame and Claire Dowling, a veteran Irishwoman who ended up playing for Warwickshire and was a member of three winning Curtis Cup teams. Sian James, of Bristol and Clifden, is the defending champion and Corisande Lee, an up and coming Lancastrian who recently won the Formby Leveret, is worth keeping an eye on.
There is a strong contingent from Wales, the home international champions, because this is a Welsh Order of Merit event.

Stephanie Meadow

commits to Alabama

University in 2010

NEWS RELEASE ISSUE BY HANK HANEY INTERNATIONAL JUNIOR GOLF ACADEMY
Stephanie Meadow of Northern Ireland, a junior (third year) student at Hank Haney International Junior Golf Academy, Hilton Head Island, South Carolina has verbally committed to attend the University of Alabama in the fall of 2010.
She was heavily recruited by top-ranked colleges around the country.
Stephanie won the Irish girls championship in 2006 and reached the final again in 2007 but was beaten.
Hank Haney, Tiger Woods' coach, says that Stephanie is “a role model at the Academy, has a strong work ethic, is very poised and at ease in any situation and will be a great addition to the Crimson Tide (University of Alabama) team.”
The Meadow family made one of the biggest decisions in their lives after a very successful 2006 season during which Stephanie captured the Irish girls championship and the Nick Faldo European girls' series. They moved temporarily to the States to allow Stephanie to train at the Hank Haney International Junior Golf Academy on Hilton Head Island.
She is currently ranked in the top 15 juniors in the world in the two junior golf rating systems for the class of 2010. Meadow is ranked 12th in both the Golfweek rankings and those of Junior Golf Scoreboard junior rankings.
Since arriving in America, Stephanie has continued to build on her impressive resume. She has notched seven wins on the International Junior Golf Tour (IJGT), is the 2008 Golfweek Junior Invitational Champion, finished second at the 2008 Optimist Tournament of Champions and more recently was third at the Verizon Junior Heritage and fourth at the Kathy Whitworth Junior Invitational.
Meadow has had to deal with adversity both on and off the course, including her father suffering heart failure while she was competing in the Nick Faldo Junior Series World Finals in China.
“Choosing a university was a very difficult decision”, says Stephanie. “Many coaches from colleges around the country wanted to recruit me and with the help of my parents, I narrowed the list to four or five colleges that I seriously considered.”
“Alabama is a fantastic place. As soon as I arrived I knew it was very special. I was immediately impressed by the style and class of the campus. The girls on the team are great. They are motivated; they work hard and most importantly have fun doing it. Coach Mic Potter has a lot to do with this. He is an outstanding coach and has a huge amount of experience. I know that he can help me bring my game to the next level. I am 100% sure that Alabama will help me reach all my goals both on and off the golf course.”
Meadow’s parents, Robert and Louise had nothing but praise for the University of Alabama. “It’s a great combination of academics and athletics and we are really excited for Steph. She wants to obtain a first class education, majoring in Business/Finance and go on to win on the LPGA Tour.
"While we visited several great schools and met with very talented coaches, Alabama excelled in so many areas and Coach Potter will no doubt develop Stephanie’s talent”.
Meadow attends Heritage Academy, the academic partner of Hank Haney IJGA, and her GPA is 4.60.
Stephanie hails from Jordanstown, Northern Ireland. She had her 17th birthday in January 20.

East Vets CSS 71 for everyone

The results of the East Vets Spring Meeting held on Gullane No3 on Monday were announced with the CSS as 72 for Home players and 71 for Away players.
It's been pointed out that under Clause 2.3 of Appendix B, Competition Scratch Score Procedure in the CONGU Handbook (Page 53) that if the Competition Scratch Score for 'Home' players is higher than that calculated for 'Away' players the CSS calculation should default to a single CSS calculation calculated for the whole field.
The CSS for the whole field went up +2 to 71 on the day.
As it was me who did the calculations in the first place I must give my abject apologies to those Gullane members who thought they were in their buffer and and are now not!

Peter Latimer scores third win

on US college circuit

Peter Latimer from Markinch, a junior (third-year) student at Guilford College, Greensboro, North Carolina, scored his first win of the 2008-2009 United States college golf season - and his third overall in the States - in this week's West Region Invitational tournament at the Terravista Golf Club, Austin in Texas.
Latimer, two ahead overnight after a pair of par-matching 72s, shot a 74 in Tuesday's final round and finished with a three-round total of 218, one stroke better than Mitchell Fedorka of the University of La Verne and Davis Dewald of the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor.
The Scot, pictured above, made 10 birdies over 54 holes for his third US college title. His birdie on the par-5 16th hole proved the difference as Fedorka and Dewald played the final three holes at even-par while Latimer was one under.
Guilford College (917) finished fourth in the team event behind winners La Verne University (897) with Redlands University (904) second and Texas & Tyler (912) third in a field of 14 teams.

Wind-tamer Michele Thomson

leads Florida field with a 76

Rookie professional Michele Thomson from Ellon used all her experience of playing in windy conditions to establish a three-stroke lead after the first round of this week's SunCoast Ladies Series developmental pro tour at Country Club of Mount Dora in Florida.
The 21-year-old Curtis Cup player and Scottish women's amateur champion at Lossiemouth last May was one of only four players in a field of 29 to break 80.
Michele, pictured recently by Cal Carson Golf Agency, waiting to make her Ladies European Tour debut in the Swiss Ladies Open in mid-May, shot a four-over-par 76, thanks to an inward half of 35 - three shots better than anyone else could manage in the high winds sweeping across this par-72, 6250yd course which has water in play at 16 of the holes and elevated greens in the style of the late Dr Alastair Mackenzie who designed Augusta National, Aberdeen's municipal Hazlehead and Banff's Duff House Royal courses, to name but three.
Over the tough outward half, Michele had bogeys at the foufrth, fifht, sixth, eighth and ninth, to reach the turn in five-over-par 41 - but that was one of the better first-nine totals as the winds howled over this course, built on one of the highest points in the Florida peninsula.
On the way home, Miss Thomson perhaps benefited from her experience gained in playing in North-east Alliance's men's winter events on exposed links courses. She was able to come home in one-under par with eight pars and a birdie at the par-5 13th.
Tournaments are over three rounds on the Florida-based SunCoast Ladies Series tour. First plce usually earns a player in the region of $4,000. The events are not cheap to play in. Registering to play on the tour costs $175 and the entry fee per tournament is $450.
+Michele Thomson was recently named Aberdeenshire Sports Person for 2008 for winning the Scottish women's amateur title and also gaining selection for the Curtis Cup match against the Americans over the Old Course, St Andrews.

R&A Foundation Scholars' Tournament

Sian James on the 18th tee at the Old Course in her final round of the R&A Scholars' tournament today.

TOP OF THE CLASS - Sian James and Paul Betty at St Andrews today.

Paul Betty keeps men's title in Scotland: Sian

James takes women's crown to Birmingham

The men's title stayed in Scotland thanks to a splendid effort from Paul Betty, the women's championship went over the Border to Birmingham with Sian James at the end of the R&A Foundation Scholars' tournament, of which the first two rounds were played over the Eden Course, St Andrews on Monday and the third and final round over the Old Course today.
Stirling University student Paul Betty, a member of the Hayston Golf Club, Glasgow, came from a shot off the pace to finish two shots clear of the international field with a splendid round of 68 over the Old Course. He had scored 73 and 68 at the Eden and had started the final day, trailing Leonard Motta from Milan, overnight leader with scores of 69 and 71 over the Eden course.
Betty, who had finished 12th at the weekend in the Scottish Champion of Champions' 72-hole tournament at Leven Links, showed not the slightest sign of tiredness during his seventh competitive round of links golf in four days on the trot as he made five birdies and only one bogey over the Old Course.
Betty maintains the fine record of Stirling students in the R&A Bursars' tournament. The 2007, 2008 and now 2009 men's title-winners have all been from Stirling University.
Leonard Motta closed with a 71 - a good score over the Old Course at any time - but it left the door open for the challenging Betty ... and he seized the opportunity.
The Milan student's total of 211 gave him second place, two behind Betty and three ahead of third-placed Elmwood student, Scott Stewart-Cation who had rounds of 71 and 72 over the Eden course and a 71 at the Old Course.
Like Betty, Stewart-Cation played all four rounds of the Scottish Champion of Champions tournament on Saturday and Sunday, finishing 25th at Leven.
“The wind was quite strong today,” said Betty, now in his fourth year as an R&A Scholar. “On the way out it was helping, so I just tried to make the most of it on the par-5s and the shorter holes because I knew it would be tough coming back.
“The R&A’s money and support has made a big difference to me,” he added. “It’s really good to get invited to play in this, obviously, but it’s quite expensive to play amateur golf with all the travelling. The money’s really helpful in covering those costs and giving you the chance to play in events that you otherwise can’t play.”
Betty's victory, the best of his career so far, earns him automatic selection to the eight-man European team who will contest the Palmer Cup students' international match against the United States at Cherry Hills Country Club, Colorado later this year.
“It’s going to be brilliant. Gordon Yates and Scott Borrowman [winners of the Scholars Tournament in 2008 and 2009 respectively], with whom I play a lot of golf at Stirling, have played in the Palmer Cup match in the last two years and really enjoyed it, so I’m looking forward to it already!”
University of Birmingham student Sian James from Gloucester and a member of the Bristol & Clifton Golf Club, competing in the R&A Scholars Tournament for the first time, kept hold of her overnight lead to win the women’s title ahead of two French students, Laura Chemarin and Lucie Andre, both from Toulouse.
Sian's brilliant Monday second round of six-under-par 67 at the Eden course, stood her in good stead down the home straight as she came under increasing pressure from the two-pronged French challenge.
A final round of 77, which included an excellent up-and-down from behind the Road Hole bunker on the Old Course's 17th, was to prove vital in the final analysis. It helped the English student finish with a three-under-par, 54-hole total of 219.
Chemarin followed a pair of 73s on the Eden course with a 74 on the Old Course, finishing just one shot behind the winner.
“It was pretty tough; I was struggling a little bit off the tee so I knew I had to be level-par because I know that others would make birdies round this course,” said a delighted Sian James, whose victory has earned her a place in the the field at a Ladies European Tour event.
“I’m ecstatic about that. It was an ambition to win this week and try to get some Ladies European Tour experience, because that's where I want to be eventually. Now I’ve got the chance to try and compete with the European Tour ladies!”
Pamela Pretswell (Glasgow University) finished fourth on 224 with scores of 72 and 75 at the Eden and a closing 77 over the Old Course.
There were three Toulouse University players in the top five with Rosanna Crepiat, winner of the Portuguese women's open amateur title and beaten finalist in the Spanish women's open amateur, finishing fifth with a closing 74 for 225.
Defending champion Laura Murray (Robert Gordon University, Aberdeen) from Alford came sixth on 228 after a closing round of 80 on the Old Course. Last week Laura won the Scottish women's universities title at Lossiemouth.

Ailsa Summers wins Angus girls'

championship for first time

Ailsa Summers, whose mother is a multi-winner of the Angus women's county golf championship, looks like being a chip off the old block. Ailsa today won the Angus junior ladies' championship at Ballumbie Castle golf course for the first time.
Ailsa, a five-handicap junior member of Carnoustie Ladies Golf Club, beat Ashley Alston (Royal Montrose) by 3 and 2 in the final. Ashley also lost in the final last year.
In the semi-finals Ailsa Summers beat Louise Smith 5 and 4 and Ashley Alston beat Monifieth clubmate Jemma Chalmers 2 and 1.
Later this week Ailsa Summers is a member of the Scotland 2 team in the SLGA Under-16 girls' open championship at Craigielaw.
Ailsa's mother, as Mary Mackie, also reached the final of the British girls' open championship at Edzell Golf Club in 1982.

Duke of York's leading girl

gets Women's Open incentive

Marieke Nivard, the 18?year?old Dutch golfer who won the girls’ section of the 2008 Duke of York Young Champions' Trophy tournament, has received a special exemption into Final Qualifying for the Ricoh Women’s British Open at Royal Lytham and St Annes this summer.
Final Qualifying takes place on Monday, July 27 at Fairhaven Golf Club, with the championship proper beginning on the Thursday of that week.
If successful at Fairhaven, Nivard would find herself teeing up at Lytham alongside players of the calibre of Lorena Ochoa, Paula Creamer, Michelle Wie, Laura Davies and last year’s winner, Jiyai Shin.
"I can’t believe my luck," said Nivard, who has a +3 handicap. "To have this chance of playing in my first British Open and competing against the best women golfers in the world was my biggest dream."
Only ten years ago, golf was at the bottom of Nivard’s list of sports.
"I hated it because you can’t run around and go crazy," she said. Luckily, the talent scouts had already picked her out. They gave her a place on a junior squad and, before too long, she could not put her clubs down.
"Today," she says, "playing golf is the only thing I want to do."
Ricoh’s move in awarding a Final Qualifying place to Nivard reflects the high standing of The Duke of York Young Champions Trophy tournament which was started in 2001 by the Duke himself and John Simpson, who used to manage Bernhard Langer and Nick Faldo.
Oliver Fisher, who was still a teenager when he lost out in a play?off in the European Tour’s 2008 Open de Andalucia, won the event in 2005, while such gifted European Tour winners as Pablo Martin and Rory McIlroy were both runners?up.
"I am delighted for Marieke," said the Duke of York. "The invitation from Ricoh to the leading girl in my Duke of York Young Champions Trophy is another wonderful development for the successful players in my tournament. When we set up the Young Champions Trophy, nearly 10 years ago now, we hardly dared hope for the success it is having, not only for the event, but also for the young players themselves. Marieke is going to have another great experience when she plays in Final Qualifying. We all wish her the best of success."
Javier?Diez Aguirre, Corporate Communications Director at Ricoh Europe PLC, said he was delighted to be giving the talented Nivard this opportunity. "Ricoh’s way of doing business is customer?driven and focuses on moving ideas forward. What better way to combine this approach than by enabling the talent of the future to tee off with the professionals of the day at the Ricoh Women’s British Open. Good luck to Marieke."

Ulster favourites for five titles in

a row at Woodenbridge

NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY IRISH LADIES GOLF UNION
Ulster look to capture their fifth successive Under-18 Inter-provincial title when the three- day tournament tees-off at Woodenbridge Golf Club, Co. Wicklow on Wednesday, April 15.
The Northern team once again looks the strongest of the four sides as they field the talents of Lisa and Leona Maguire (Slieve Russell) as well as fellow Irish girls’ international Sarah Louise Winter (Carnalea).
Newcomers to the squad include rising young stars Paula Grant (Lisburn) and Erin Connolly (Armagh).
The Leinster team retains four of its players from last year’s matches and will be looking to girls’ international Patrice Delaney (Birr) to lead their title charge. The experienced Carla Reynolds (Seapoint), Ciara Sharkey (Enniscorthy) and Niamh O’Connor (Naas) are also sure to feature in the winners' enclosure.
Connacht will look to Sarah Helly (Enniscrone) and Julie O’Gara (Roscommon) to inspire a victory last captured in 2004 at Westport. Daryl Conroy (Castlebar), Aisling Hill (Roscommon) and Holly Robinson (Co. Sligo) are also expected to impress.
Munster is well represented by the in-form Emma O’Driscoll (Ballybunion), the Coyne twins from Youghal, and Laura McCarthy (Muskerry) who finished third in a class field at Cork last weekend. The southerners look like the strongest side to upset Ulster’s aspirations of five in-a-row.
The altered format for this year’s event sees an increase in the number of matches in the round robin series. Each Province will be represented by eight players instead of six while three foursomes instead of two will precede the familiar six singles in the afternoon each day.
The tournament takes place over the par 72 Woodenbridge parkland course, which celebrates its 125th anniversary this year, and measures 5,915 yards.

Michael Stewart finishes joint

third after best yet in USA

Troon's Michael Stewart, winner of the Scottish boys' championship 12 months ago this week, produced his best score yet in his freshman year at East Tennessee State University, to finish joint third in the Larry Nelson Collegiate Invitational over the Chateau Elan Resort's Woodland course at Braselton, Georgia.
Stewart, pictured right, had a great opening round of four-under-par 67 over the 6735yd course - his lowest since he went to Johnson City on a four-year golf scholarship last autumn. That score put him in the pole position in a field of 73 players but later scores of 72 and 76 for a total of 215 relegated him to a creditable joint third finish.
One of Stewart's team-mates, Seamus Power, a second-year student from Waterford, Ireland, scored 70, 69 and 74 for level par 213, to tie with Thomas Parker (Stetson) (73-67-73). There was no play-off because of lack of time and bad weather coming in to the venue.
Former British boys champion Jordan Findlay, in his final year at East Tennessee State University, finished joint 41st on 228 with rounds of 76, 74 and 78.
Stephen Keane from Glasgow, a student at Belmont Abbey College, North Carolina, finished joint 54th with scores of 78, 77 and 75 for 230.

The Sickleholme Golf Club member, who hails from Bradwell, Derbyshire, had 12 birdies over the three rounds.
Although Carley was by far the best player in the field of 49 players, she did not get enough support from her Belmont Abbey College team-mates. They finished third with a total of 951 behind Gardner-Webb University (939) and Samford University (941) in the team event contested by nine squads.

Big entry for English seniors’ championship

NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY ENGLISH WOMEN'S GOLF ASSOCIATION
A bumper entry of 116 women golfers will contest the English senior women's championship at Hunstanton in Norfolk from April 21-24.
Between them the players represent 29 counties and there are 11 competitors from Norfolk, including five members of the host club.
Hunstanton’s classic links will set a fine test for the field and the event promises to be a superb curtain-raiser to the English Women’s Golf Association championship season.
The handicaps start at scratch and the competitive field boasts a host of senior internationals. They include the defending champion, Sue Dye of Delamere Forest, Cheshire, and senior stroke-play champion Janet Melville (formerly Collingham) from Sherwood Forest, Nottinghamshire. Playing alongside them will be the other five members of the 2008 England senior team: Carolyn Kirk of Ganton, Yorkshire; Barbara Laird of Sandiway, Cheshire; Chris Quinn of Hockley, Hampshire; Chris Stirling of Meon Valley, Hampshire; and Christine Watson of Beaconsfield, Buckinghamshire.
Among the "new"seniors who will make their debut this year is Caroline Marron of Bromborough, Cheshire, who was the 2001 English stroke-play champion.
The Norfolk challenge will be led by Sue Meadows of Hunstanton, who plays off three, and former county champion Jo Ashmore (Barnham Broom) who made a promising start in seniors’ golf last year and is a four-handicapper.
County colleagues include the current Norfolk captain, Nickie Clarke (Royal Norwich), and county second-team player Eppie Zandvoort (Eaton). The other Hunstanton players are Jean Johnson, Angela Allsopp, Rosemary Beeson and Cheryl Sanders.
The field is divided into two flights: players with handicaps up to six will contest Division A, while those with handicaps between seven and 15 are in Division B.
All competitors will play 36 holes of strokeplay qualifying over the first two days of the championship.
The top 16 players in each division will qualify for the match-play knock-out. The final of each division will be played on the afternoon of Friday, April 24.
The course measures 6,015 yards, has a par of 75 and a USGA course rating of 76.

R&A Scholars tournament at St Andrews

Sian James leads after 67 over Eden

Course in wind and rain

FROM THE R&A WEBSITE
Birmingham University student Sian James from Gloucestershire leads the women’s side of the R&A Foundation Scholars 54-hole tournament after carding a six under-par second-round 67 over the Eden Course at St Andrews today.
The 20-year-old Bristol & Clifton Golf Club member made five birdies to come back in 31 to complete what was a near faultless performance. Added to her first-round score of 75, James heads the female field with a 36-hole total of 142. The tournament ends with a Tuesday round over the Old Course.
“I just managed to keep it together on the front-nine and then I started putting my irons a bit closer and just couldn’t really miss with the putter. My ambition is to get on the Ladies European Tour so to win the Scholars event and win the prize of a place in the field for an LET event would be brilliant.”
James, who has just started at the University of Birmingham, is in her first year as an R&A Scholar and is already using the grant to play as much competitive golf as possible.
“The funding has been very beneficial in enabling me to play more tournaments. I went to Spain earlier in the year for the Spanish Amateur and without the funding I wouldn’t have been able to play in that. On that occasion I was pipped by one of the French girls who is here, Rosanna Crepiat. Hopefully I might be able to pip her tomorrow but we’ll see.”
On the men’s side of the draw, Milan student Leonardo Motta heads the field by one after two outstanding rounds of golf in testing conditions over 36-holes at the Eden course. Motta produced consistent rounds of 69 and 71 to take the overnight lead on a total of 140.
Three back on 143 is the University of St Andrews’ Mike Gray who posted the lowest men’s round with a three under-par 67. Gray overcame wet and windy conditions in registering four birdies and only one bogey during his second eighteen holes.
“Conditions were hard but fair,” explained the final-year student. “It was windy, but it was fairly consistent through the day until it died a bit late in the second round. It was tough but it wasn’t too bad.”

Seasoned International McVeigh played solidly in the afternoon round to return 78, a score matched by up-and-coming teenager Laura McCarthy who continues to impress at this level.
Local favourite Gillian O’Leary (Cork) matched Murphy’s 74 in the afternoon to finish fourth ahead of Niamh Kitching (Claremorris) and Sarah Cunningham (Ennis). Laura Dempsey (Enniscorthy) won the best nett from Rhona Brennan (Bandon) and Lucy Simpson (Massereene) in the star-studded field who used Saturday’s 36 holes as an ideal warm up for the Munster Women’s Championships starting in Shannon on Tuesday.

Futures Tour report from Daytona Beach

Tournament No 19 is lucky for Misun Cho

By LISA D MICKEY
In 18 events on the Duramed Futures Tour over the last two years, Misun Cho had never cracked a top-10 finish. Until Sunday at Daytona Beach, Florida - and then, she won.
The petite South Korean, whose English is laced with an Australian accent, tied for the lead of the $100,000 iMPACT Invitational on her third hole and never trailed for the rest of the final round. Cho carded rounds of 71-69-70 to win her first Duramed Futures Tour title by four shots at 210 (-6).
"I worked hard for this and I feel like I deserved it," said Cho, 21, a second-year professional of Cheongju, South Korea, who jumped from 32nd on the Tour's 2009 season money list to No. 2. "Knowing that I'm on the right track makes me feel confident and comfortable that I've improved my game."
Rookie Mina Harigae (71) of Monterey, Calif., finished in solo second at 214 (-2), followed by veteran Nicole Jeray (69) of Berwyn, Ill., and first-round leader Paola Moreno (75) of Cali, Colombia, who tied for third at 215 (-1).
Second-round leader Christi Cano of San Antonio never got on track on the final day, enabling Cho to draw even with a bogey on the third hole, and then surge ahead when the Texan took bogey over the next three consecutive holes. Cano carded an uncharacteristically rocky final round of 79 on a day that produced eight bogeys and a single birdie. She dropped into a tie for seventh at one-over 217.
But the Legends Course at LPGA International played tough all week. On Friday, the wind blew and scoring soared on the 6,464-yard course that also serves as the site for the annual LPGA Final Qualifying Tournament.
Still, Cho, who spent four months in the off-season working with Orlando-based teaching legend Phil Ritson at Orange County National, played under par each day. She stayed steady and waited for opportunities on the course that demands precision shot making. Last year on this course, she drove home from the Daytona tournament with a tie for 40th at seven-over-par 223. Today, with a completely rebuilt swing, Cho was a different player.
"She has made a lot of progress, but she's only 60 percent where she can be," said Ritson, who also revamped the game of Cho's Australian friend, Sarah-Jane (Kenyon) Smith, who earned her 2009 LPGA Tour card through the Duramed Futures Tour last season.
The two women knew each other in Australia and Cho watched her friend's remarkable transformation into a more powerful and effective player last year. So as soon as the 2008 Duramed Futures Tour season was over, Cho went knocking at Ritson's door. Ritson had never heard of Misun Cho, but her friendship with Kenyon opened the door, and when the veteran swing coach took one look at Cho's stroke on the practice tee, he knew he was getting ready to embark on his next swing overhaul with a young professional who would benefit from change.
"I saw real athletic movement in her swing and I thought, this girl can be a star," said Ritson, who has coached the PGA's K.J. Choi and LPGA players Mi Hyun Kim, Gloria Kim and U.S. Women's Open champion Birdie Kim.
At just under 5ft 3in, and tipping the scales at 125lbs, Cho came to Ritson hitting her drives a mere 220 yards. In four months, she has added between 28-35 yards off the tee and transformed her swing into a more predictable stroke. Her fitness level also improved, making the small-framed player a pro with giant potential.
In Sunday's final round, she drained a birdie putt on the second hole from three feet and rolled in a 15-footer for birdie on the fourth hole. After that, the rest of the field could only chase Cho as she built a four-shot lead with nine holes to play.

Cho gave back a shot to the field with a bogey on the 13th, but rolled in a two-footer for birdie on the 16th. At that point, only Harigae and Irish-born US Curtis Cup player at St Andrews last year, Alison Walshe (73) of Westford, Mass., had time to chase, but Walshe gave up two bogeys on her last six holes to tie Sophia Sheridan (72) of Guadalajara, Mexico for fifth at even-par 216. Conversely, Harigae, playing with Walshe, birdied two of her last six holes to grab sole possession of second.
"I was so worried about making mistakes on the front nine and I was playing really tentatively, so on the back nine, I told myself to just let go and let my game take over," said Harigae, a rookie who left Duke University after a half season to turn pro. "It helped me to relax playing with Alison because I played on the [U.S.] Curtis Cup team with her."
But nobody was able to catch Cho. She hit 13 greens and 13 fairways in regulation and used 29 putts in today's final round. For most of the day, the field was playing for second place.
"No, I didn't win today with a [history of a] lot of top 10s," said Cho, who played collegiately for one year at Pepperdine University. "I didn't have a swing that could handle it under pressure."
But after many hours on the range with Ritson and a small mountain of practice balls - hoping to repeat what her Australian pal did last year -- now, she does.
Weather: Sunny with temperatures in mid-80s with only a slight breeze.
