Surrey’s Rozalyn Adams is top seed

in English seniors’ championship

NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY ENGLISH WOMEN'S GOLF ASSOCIATION
Surrey’s Rozalyn Adams birdied her way home to become the top seed for the match-play stages of the English senior women’s championship at Hunstanton, Norfolk.
After 27 holes without a birdie, she transformed her score by playing the last nine holes in five-under par and swept in as leading qualifier.
Roz shot two-under par 73 for the day and was two-over for the 36 holes of qualifying. She said: “I played the first 27 holes trying to be conservative and not make any errors. Then on the back nine I got a good putt in on 10 and told myself it was time to be more positive.”
She added: “I am absolutely thrilled to be leading qualifier. The first target is always just to qualify for the match-play but having done that, then you want to win.”
In the first round of the knock-out she will play English senior stroke-play champion Janet Melville, who grabbed the 16th and last spot in the draw with a second-round 77.
The championship was again blessed with superb weather and a helping breeze for the homeward holes. The scores reflected the conditions with four sub-par rounds and three more of level par.
Lincolnshire’s Denise Parker matched the low score of the day with her 73, which included a rare birdie on 18.
“I am delighted with this – I’ve had 18 months of playing absolute tripe and it’s just come back!”
Among the others who beat par were defending champion Sue Dye, who was five over after eight holes and played the rest of the course in six-under-par, helped by two eagles.
Norfolk’s Jo Ashmore peppered her card with six birdies as she headed to a second-round score of level par. She qualified comfortably in eighth place and now plays former champion Sue Ellis of Dorset, who shot one-under 74, helped by a birdie-eagle start.
In Division B the top qualifier is Shropshire’s Sue Pidgeon, who won this title last year. She finished a shot clear of Norfolk’s Eppie Zandvoort, who is joined in the draw by her county colleagues Nickie Clarke, the Norfolk county captain, and Cheryl Sanders of the host club. QUALIFIERS
