The holder, Florentyna Parker (Royal Birkdale) lost at the last hole to Emilie Alonso from France in the first match play round of the Trophee Esmond at St Cloud, near Paris, today.

450 Juniors Needing Coaching

Golf Coach Karyn Dallas has just received an alarming wake up call for the start of her junior coaching program. She went to her records and discovered that during the close season the number of juniors wanting to receive information on coaching had almost doubled from around 250 to just over 450.

Nine years ago Karyn launched her junior coaching program at Kirriemuir Golf Club to around 30 of the clubs juniors. Within 2 years word had spread and there were over 100 with more and more enquiries all the time. The coaching struggled to cope for a couple of years until a management program was introduced which enabled Karyn to quickly sort and organise over 200 students.

It was feared that such a quantity of students would stifle quality but these fear were allayed when in 2006 junior boys from Kirriemuir would dominate the Angus County Junior Order of Merit; taking the top eight slots. In 2007 they nearly made the double when Amy Taylor won the girls OOM and Daniel Naismith finished 2nd in the boys OOM.

When Karyn launched the program she was unaware of what she had achieved. The program has proved universally successful at all levels. As stated it was able to attract and retain a large number of students of which 30% are female. It was used as a national program by the SLGA and is success can be seen in the strength of the current Scottish Girls team who were all introduced to the program at an early age. When Karyn was asked to do some work with the local special needs community she simply adapted the sessions to suit the mental age and physical abilities of the students. At the top level two students, Jenna Wilson and Pamela Feggans earned tour cards in late 2007.

A commercial version of the program is overdue and following a very successful pilot at Montrose with Professional Jason Boyd another pilot is currently being rolled out in England. Karyn is looking for suitable locations in Ireland and Wales so if anyone is interested please contact Karyn by email karyn@tgolf.info

Update on French Junior Championship

I can only assume that bad light or bad weather stopped play at the French Junior (U21) Championship at St Cloud, as the last twenty or so players out on the course have not had their scores recorded on the French website.
British Ladies Champion Carlotta Ciganda from Spain is leader in the clubhouse after a sparkling 66 to give her a total of four under par 138. Yesterday's leader, Lara Katzy from Germany is lying second on 140 after a 73 today, and her compatriot Saskia Hausladen on another stroke behind on 141 with scores of 70 and 71.
Florentyna Parker (Royal Birkdale), who will be playing for GB&I in the Curtis Cup match at St Andrews at the end of May and who was second yesterday with a 69, had a rather disappointing 79 and is in 13th position, although she will probably drop further down the table as some of the players still to record their scores come in.
Young Lisa Maguire (Sleive Russell) , who reached the semi-final of the British Girls at Southerdown last summer as a 12 year-old, had a 71 today and is currently in 9th place on 147, with England's Hannah Barwood one stroke behind on 148.
The top 32 qualify for the Coupe Esmond, and the next 16 who are under 18 years of age qualify for the Claude Roger Cartier Trophy.

Melville Golf Centre Open Day for junior golfers in Midlothian

Melville Golf Centre, which has signed up to the national junior golf development programme, clubgolf, is holding an Open Day for juniors on Saturday 29 March (from 10.00am to 1.00pm).

The Open Day will include putting and pitching lessons for boys and girls. There will be free competitions for children aged between eight and twelve years old, and an opportunity to win a free place on the Centre’s clubgolf Summer Term programme and free rounds of golf at Melville Golf Course, starting 12 April.

“We are hoping that around 100 children will come along for the morning,” said Centre Manager, Alastair Macfarlane.

“This would be ideal for primary school children that are having clubgolf coaching at school this coming term and are looking to progress to the next stage.”

Emerging out of Scotland’s successful bid to host the Ryder Cup, clubgolf is a partnership between the Scottish Golf Union, the Scottish Ladies' Golfing Association, the Professional Golfers' Association, the Golf Foundation and sportscotland. The programme has been developed as a direct result of the Scottish Government’s commitment to introduce every nine-year-old child in Scotland to golf.

Melville Golf Centre joined clubgolf last year and to two of its members are PGA Level 1 volunteer coaches. Together with the Centre’s PGA professional, they will be running clubgolf Stage 1 coaching programmes this summer.

“We started clubgolf a year ago and before that we were with the Golf Foundation for nine years,” said Mr Macfarlane

“We are a family centre so we have all the facilities set up for children and we have a pro that is committed to coaching the children.

“We are hoping to get as many children as many as possible to our coaching over the spring and summer so the Open Day will be an opportunity for them to get out and join the fun.”

Can I ask you to watch www.ffgolf.org (the section on Coupe Esmonde) and I'll keep an eye on it too and update the website later this evening.

ULSTER FAVOURITES FOR FOUR-IN-A-ROW
UNDER-18 INTER-PROVINCIAL TITLE

Ulster look to capture their fourth successive Under-18 Inter-provincial title when the three-day tournament is played from March 26 to 28 at Bangor Golf Club, Co. Down.
The defending champions once again look the strongest of the four sides as they field five players from last year’s successful line-up. Victoria Bradshaw, playing on home soil, is joined again by 13-year-old twins Leona and Lisa Maguire (Slieve Russell) who will have just returned from action in the French U-21 championship at St Cloud Golf Club.
The only newcomer to last year’s squad in US student Stephanie Meadow (Royal Portrush), last year’s Irish girls’ (closed) runner-up, who makes a welcome return to the Ulster underage squad.
Nearest challengers Munster also field five from last year’s team with U18 Internationals Sarah Cunningham (Ennis) and Holli Snelling (Tralee) hoping to lead their side to victory on Friday afternoon.
Connacht field four players from last year’s team and will need things to go their way if they are to regain the title they surrendered to Ulster in 2005. Leinster’s Niamh O’Connor (Naas) and Ciara Sharkey (Enniscorthy) are the only survivors from last year’s team and the side will need to punch well above their weight to make an impact in this year’s Championship.
This year’s tournament takes place on the challenging parkland at Bangor and with a par 73 track over 6,052 yards, Friday’s winners will be worthy champions of this highly competitive opener to the 2008 season.

PRINCE’S TRUST HAS
FUND-RAISING FOR
GOLFERS DOWN
TO A TEE

The Prince’s Trust has announced details of its annual celebrity golf tournament which will be held in the North-east of England on June 26 to raise valuable funds to change young lives across the region.
The amateur golf event is one of three sporting activities to be held this year as part of ‘The Prince’s Trust Challenge Trophy’ which last year raised almost a quarter of a million pounds to support disadvantaged youngsters in the North-east of England.
The one-day golf tournament will take place at the picturesque Slaley Hall in Northumberland and will offer guests a chance to enjoy an exclusive alongside celebrity supporters such as actor Tim Healey and Newcastle United player Paul Bracewell.
David Beavis, North-east Regional Director for The Prince’s Trust, said: “This is not just a fantastic opportunity to play a serious round of golf on a championship course alongside celebrity supporters; this is about raising money to change the lives of many disadvantaged youngsters here in the North-east (of England) who deserve a second chance in life.”
The Challenge Trophy’s series of events will involve two teams of celebrities and members of the public going head-to-head under the colours of team presidents, His Grace, The Duke of Northumberland and The Right Honourable Earl of Durham, Lord Durham.
The tournament will involve 80 players for either the Duke or the Earl and will see celebrities captain each of the 20 four-ball matches over 18 holes of the Hunting Course Championship green. The handicap on the day will be a maximum of 24 for men and 30 for women.
Last year’s hugely popular golf tournament saw 80 players enjoy a sunny round to raise £30,000 with the help of celebrities such as Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer, England cricketer Steve Harmison and former Newcastle United defender John Berseford.
Former Sunderland AFC Captain Kevin Ball and captain of The Lord’s Challenge Trophy 2008 team felt that last year’s golf tournament was a resounding success. “Everyone enjoyed a brilliant day with all proceeds going to an important cause. I would urge keen golfers to sign up this year and help us raise even more money for The Prince’s Trust- A fantastic day, a fantastic golf course and all for a fantastic cause.”
In 2007, The Prince’s Trust supported almost 4,000 14-30 year olds in the North-east of England by providing a range of programmes including personal development courses, business start up finance and grants for community projects.
The youth charity, which works with those who have struggled at school, have been in care, are long-term unemployed or have been in trouble with the law needs to raise around £1million per week to continue its valuable work.
The Prince’s Trust Challenge Trophy 2008 is also set to include a Celebrity Clay Shoot and a Celebrity Track Day Driving Experience on 15th July. For further information on all three events, call the regional office on 0191 4973 210.

Six Clubs Short-listed For Junior Awards

Six of Scotland’s golf clubs have been short listed for the final of the inaugural Dunfermline Building Society Junior Club of the Year Awards with the winners to be announced at the Scottish Golf Dinner later this month.
North-east clubs Alford and Inverurie were selected for final nomination, alongside Turnhouse GC from Edinburgh, Greenock Whinhill, Reay Golf Club in the north of Scotland and Ayrshire club, West Kilbride.
Nominations from 50 golf clubs across Scotland were received by the Scottish Golf Union’s judging panel, who were left with the difficult decision of which clubs to leave out.
“The standard of entry has been excellent, demonstrating the high level of commitment many of our clubs have towards encouraging junior participation and growing the game in their communities,” said Andy Salmon, Development Manager for Scottish Golf.
“Whilst we have short listed six golf clubs, all those who were nominated can all be very proud of their efforts and will undoubtedly become the benchmarks for other clubs to follow. All the entries we have received are reflective of the positive attitude Scottish golf has towards youngsters in the game,” he added.
Following the launch of the Awards in December by Tour professionals Peter Whiteford and Clare Queen, clubs have been working hard to complete their nominations, based on their efforts to encourage juniors, provide improved facilities, harness links to their local community and develop talent at their club.
Graeme Dalziel, Chief Executive of sponsors Dunfermline Building Society, was delighted to see the Awards prove so popular in their first year.
“We are very proud to sponsor the Junior Club of the Year Awards and support grass roots golf in Scotland. Much of the hard work done by volunteers in our clubs goes unnoticed and these Awards will help recognise the fantastic efforts of so many people,” he said.
“Dunfermline Building Society’s commitment to junior golf in Scotland will hopefully encourage even more youngsters to get involved in golf across our communities and support the great work being done both locally and nationally.”
The judging panel will select the winning club over the next two weeks, with the announcement of the Junior Club of the Year made at the Scottish Golf Dinner on Friday 28 March in Glasgow.
The winning club will be presented with a cheque for £1000 for their junior section, which will be awarded by former European Tour star Dean Robertson alongside Graeme Dalziel.
The five-runners up will each receive £300, with all clubs represented by their junior convenors at the event.Dunfermline Building Society’s Fairway Saver account, which also supports golf clubs in Scotland, has already attracted nearly 2,000 new customers, with £500 given to any club who signs up 50 of their members.

New programme puts Western
Isles juniors in the swing

A new programme designed to give youngsters in the Western Isles an opportunity to develop an interest in golf and adopt a more active lifestyle was launched in Stornoway today.
The Western Isles Junior Golf Action Plan is linked to Scotland’s National Junior Golf Development programme, clubgolf, a partnership between the Scottish Golf Union, Scottish Ladies Golfing Association, Professional Golfers Association, The Golf Foundation and sportscotland that aims to create the opportunity for every child to experience golf by age nine, and to increase junior participation in golf in Scotland.
The Western Isles Junior Golf Action Plan aims to help up to 500 youngsters experience clubgolf’s introductory game, in school, over the next two years.
Ultimately this will result in more junior members at golf clubs, increase the number of girls playing golf, and create a facility infrastructure for golf development which supports increased participation at club level.
Said Tony Wade, Team Leader Active Schools/Sports Development: “This is the perfect opportunity to get youngsters involved in a new sport that they could sustain for the rest of their life.
“Through the Western Isles Junior Golf Action Plan there is a strong link between the schools and their local clubs. The youngsters that enjoy the schools programme can progress to a local club that they can go to and a pathway for them to develop their skills.”
Launched by former Open champion Paul Lawrie, firstclubgolf uses multi-coloured modified clubs, rubberised balls and Velcro targets to give nine year olds an enjoyable and safe first experience of the game within the boundaries of the school. In 2007 alone, 26,000 nine year olds in Scotland were introduced to golf through firstclubgolf.
Last week, Primary 5 children at Stornoway and Laxdale Primary Schools were among the first in the Western Isles to start the 2008 schools clubgolf programme. Last year over 200 primary pupils experienced firstclubgolf in school time.
“The equipment is top notch, it’s very self-explanatory and the kids have taken to it,” said PE Teacher, David MacLeod, who is teaching firstclubgolf to the schools’ children each week.
“With three or four golfing activities running at the same time it’s a good way of having lots of kids active and involved.
“I’m a golfer with a strong interest in the game but I’m sure that a non-golfer could be confident of giving a lesson with this equipment.”
At the end of their introduction to firstclubgolf, children will have the opportunity to develop their skills at a local club hosting Stage 1 of the clubgolf programme. Taught by qualified PGA Level 1 volunteer coaches over two years, Stage 1 is a 40 hour course employing real golf equipment and covers the fundamentals of putting, chipping, full swing, rules and etiquette.
“The critical bit for us is having coaches who can deliver the programme within the clubs,” said Tony Wade.
“Several of our golf club members have been on PGA Level 1 coaching courses on Lewis and in the Southern Isles within the last 18 months so we already have a good core of qualified coaches.”
Golf clubs in Lewis, the Uists, Benbecula and Askernich have signed up to clubgolf and will be running coaching programmes this summer. One, the Isle of Harris Golf Club, completed its first clubgolf Stage 1 course last autumn.
“We had a very small and not very active junior membership,” said club member and PE teacher, Hugh MacLean. “It was to address this that we decided to get a couple of clubgolf Level 1 coaches and bring as many juniors up as possible.
“Our first group of children have responded well to the coaching. Some of them came from as far as Tarbert, 12 miles away, and Scalpay, 15 miles away, so they were very keen. The majority are from non-golf backgrounds so this was their introduction to golf and they thoroughly enjoyed it.”
The launch of the Western Isles Junior Golf Action Plan coincides with two other exciting golf developments on the Islands.
The Askernish Golf Club, with its Old Tom Morris course, on South Uist is undergoing a substantial refurbishment that will attract people from around the world.
Sportscotland has awarded £35,000 towards building a driving range to be sited at Back Football & Recreation Club. This will go a long way towards growing the game in the Western Isles and, as a covered area, it will give a base for a visiting PGA Professional to work from.
Bill Miller, Chair of clubgolf, who attended the launch, said: “I am delighted to see the progress clubgolf is making in the Western Isles. In 2007 we saw significant developments across Scotland, with 26,000 children receiving an introduction to golf. By establishing sustainable coaching programmes and welcoming more boys and girls into golf, the Western Isles has proved we have a quality programme that offers truly national coverage.”

BRITISH TRIO STRUGGLE IN FIRST
ROUND OF BETSY RAWLS
LONGHORN INVITATIONAL

The first round of the Betsy Rawls Longhorn Invitational, played over the par-72, 6,344yd University of Texas golf course at Austin, did not bring out the best in the three British students in the field of 90.
GB&I Curtis Cup team selection Jodi Ewart (New Mexico University) and Gemma Webster (Ohio State University) from Glasgow go into the second round in joint 24th place after hitting the seven-over-par 79 mark.
And Hannah Burke (Baylor University, Texas) is sharing 52nd place after an 82.
Jodi Ewart from Catterick, Yorkshire had not a single birdie in her halves of 41 and 38. She had a double bogey 6 at the seventh and dropped single shots to par at the second, foufrth, eighth, 14th and 16th.
Gemma Webster, Cal Carson Golf Agency image copyright above, had a little bit of everything in her halves of 37 out and 42 back. The highlights were an eagle 3 at the fifth and birdies at the first and 13th.
But she had double bogey 6s at the sixth, 17th and 18th and bogeys at the second, seventh, 10th, 12th and 15th.
Hannah Burke had five bogeys and back-to-back double bogey 6s at the 12th and 13th in a nightmare run from the 10th to the 16th. She had halves of 37 and 45.
US Curtis Cup team selection Stacy Lewis (Arkansas Univesity) had a 74 to be joint third behind Ornella Jouven (Florida), surprise lead with a par-matching 72.

Krystle sparkles with joint fifth
finish in Cleveland Classic

Krystle Caithness from Cellardyke, Fife, a freshman student at Georgia University, finished joint fifth in the Cleveland Classic women's college tournament which finished at University Club, Baton Rouge in Louisiana today.
It was the 19-year-old's best performances of the 2007-2008 college season with scores of 75, 72 and 72 for a total of three-over-par total of 219 over a par-72 course of 6,511yd.
Krystle, pictured right, who started her final round at the fourth hole had four birdies - at the sixth, 12th, 17th and first - compared with one in her first round and three birdies in her second.
She was the leading scorer for the Georgia team who finished sixth (898) behind winners Florida State (884).
It was an encouraging weekend for Krystle as she builds up her level of performance for her debut appearance for Great Britain & Island in the Curtis Cup match against the United States at the end of May - and over her home course: the Old Course, St Andrews where she is a member of the St Regulus Club.
Sweden's Caroline Westrup (Oklahoma State University) won the Cleveland Classic by four strokes with scores of 73, 68 and 67 for an eight-under-par total of 208. Caroline was a member of the Continent of Europe team who inflicted a record Vagliano Trophy defeat on GB&I in last year's match at Fairmont St Andrews.
The Cleveland Classic was, all in all, a good tournament for the European competitors. Apart from Caroline Westrup and Krystle Caithness, Belgium's Benedicte Toumpsin (South Carolina) tied with the Scot for fifth place on 219 with three rounds of 73.
Also, in joint eighth place, was Germany's Steffi Kirchmayr (College of Charleston) on 222.
+Apologies to Kirkwoodgolf.co.uk readers who may have read our earlier report this evening from this tournament. GolfStat, the excellent website service of news and scores from the American college circuits, obviously had problems keeping up with the scorecards coming in from a shotgun start/finish to the Cleveland Classic.
At first, they credited Krystle Caithness with a final round of 74 - including a double bogey 5 at the short 13th - and placed her joint sixth. Only later was Krystle's score amended to a 72 - deleting the double bogey 5 - and placing her joint fifth.
