Clare Queen falls back to six behind
triple joint leaders in Finland

FROM THE LADIES EUROPEAN TOUR WEBSITE
Italy’s Diana Luna shot a six-under-par 65 to share the second round lead with Finnish duo Minea Blomqvist and Ursula Wikstrom at the Finnair Masters in Finland today.
Luna, Blomqvist and Wikstrom, who are ranked 32nd, 33rd and 34th on the New Star Money List respectively, all finished on a two-round total of five-under-par 137 at Helsinki Golf Club. Australia’s Karen Lunn, the 1993 British Open champion, finished the day on four-under-par 138 in a tie for fourth with the recent BMW Ladies Italian Open winner Martina Eberl of Germany.
All is set for an intriguing Sunday in Helsinki with the top two Finnish players going head to head for their national title. Blomqvist, the 2004 OTP Bank Ladies Central European Open champion, managed four birdies and a solitary bogey for a second round of 68, sinking a clutch 15 footer to save par at the last hole.
“I don’t think it was a great round of golf because I hit only seven greens in regulation and it was a very tough day,” said the 23-year-old from Espoo, adding: “I’m very happy with the score. I think I got everything out of the score that I could today.”
Blomqvist was delighted to be grouped with Wikstrom in the final three-ball on Sunday. In four years on tour her Finnish friend is yet to win a professional tournament, but was a runner-up in Finland in 2005. She carded five birdies and three bogeys for a 69 on day two, with a disappointing three-putt bogey at the par-4 18th hole.
“I didn’t finish this round that well so it doesn’t feel like a great round,” said the 28-year-old, who lives 15 minutes’ away from the golf course. “It’s great to finally get in contention and finally see how it’s going to be to play for a win.”
Luna, the 2004 Tenerife Ladies Open champion, fired four birdies and an eagle at the 17th hole for her 65. She is hoping to make amends for last week’s performance in Norway where she finished in a tie for fourth place having held a one-shot lead going into the final round. “I think last week I didn’t play that great in the last round,” said the 25-year-old from Rome.
“It was just not my day and I didn’t play as well as the first two days. I just hope to play a good round tomorrow. Last week I didn’t play a good round on the last day. I hope to play like I played today tomorrow.”
Luna’s round was helped by her putting, as she had 30 putts in her second round, compared to 34 on Friday.
Six players shared sixth place on three-under-par heading into the final day: Spanish trio Emma Cabrera-Bello, Beatriz Recari and Marina Arruti, England’s Rebecca Hudson, Sweden’s Nina Reis and Becky Brewerton of Wales. Ariya Jutanugarn, a 12-year-old Thai amateur, finished the day in a share of 15th place on one-under-par.

Ciganda wins European title
after play-off in Austria

Spain's Carlota Ciganda has won the European women's individual amateur championship for a second time at Schloss Schonborn Golf Club, near Vienna in Austria.
She was only 14 years old when she won it for the first time in 2004.
Last year Carlota lost to Sweden's Caroline Hedwall in a play-off for the European title.
Today, Carlota was again involved in a play-off, this time with compatriot Maria Hernandez after they had tied on three-under-par 289.
It was a three-hole stroke-play play-off under the championship rules.
Ciganda won with a three-under-par total. She birdied the first two holes and parred the third.
Christel Boeljon (Netherlands) won the bronze medal with a total of 290, only one stroke behind the play-off participants.
Kylie Walker (Buchanan Castle), the only Scot to qualify for the last two rounds, finished with her best score of the four, a one-under-par 72 for a nine-over-par total of 301, despite a double bogey 7 at the 18th hole, a repeat of of what she did in the first round.
Kylie's tournament haul of 13 birdies and one eagle compared favourably with champion Ciganda's 14 birdies and one eagle but, of course, the Spaniard had many fewer bogeys.
The Scot finished 21st of the 39 qualifiers.

ROYAL PORTRUSH AND THE ISLAND
CONTEST SENIOR CUP FINAL

PRESS RELEASE ISSUED BY IRISH LADIES GOLF UNION
Royal Portrush will play The Island in the final of the 2008 SUZUKI Senior Cup at Galway Golf Club.
Royal Portrush eased through their morning semi-final match against Kilkenny, taking the first two matches and, despite losing the middle match on the home green, secured the points when Maura Diamond convincingly won on 13.
The Island, who haven’t won the Senior Cup since 1929, were surprise victors over seasoned Douglas. Rachel Cassidy once again led from the front and after Suzy Sheehan beat Kate MacCann at the first extra hole, Gertie McMullen secured a berth in the final with a nail-biting victory on the home green.
Royal Portrush, favourites to capture their fourth title in seven years, and The Island teed off in the final at 2pm in Galway Golf Club.
RECAP ON THE FRIDAY ACTION
Favourites and number one seeds Ennis started brightly when Junior International Sarah Cunningham saw off past Irish Champion Eileen Rose Power on the 16th green. This sparked an immense fight back by Kilkenny with Mary Dowling and Mary Leahy Browne securing wins to put their side 2-1 ahead.
The all-important point was secured by Ann Smee when she holed from twelve feet on the first extra hole to end Ennis’s hopes of back-to-back victories.
Rachel Cassidy was The Island’s heroine when she beat Lisa Maguire on the 17th. In the battle of the youngsters, Cassidy holed critical putts at crucial times in the match and never looked back once she edged ahead early on in the back nine.
Leona Maguire evened the tie and team-mate Bronagh Lunney gave her side the advantage following victory over Suzy Sheehan. Gertie McMullen eased to victory in her tie and Angie Dwyer secured a semi-final berth when she beat Ann Monteith on 17.
Past Internationals Eavan Higgins and Kate MacCann were right on form, winning both their ties for Douglas against Roscommon. Ailish Thompson secured the third crucial point when she defeated Paula Quinn 2 and 1.

Royal Portrush eased through their tie against Woodbrook in the final quarter-final tie. Sue Phillips drew first blood for the underdogs with a 4/2 win over Gemma Hegarty, but comfortable victories for Lucy Simpson, Naoimh Quigg and Helen Jones saw the northern team in to the last four.

Midland Champions Kilkenny now meet last year’s runners-up Royal Portrush in the second of tomorrow’s semi-finals at 8.50am while the opening tie at 8am sees The Island take on an ever-improving Douglas side.

Sponsored Golfathon at Strathmore Golf Centre

By DAWN BUTCHART, Perth & Kinross Ladies County Captain
Good luck to five team members and one very silly Captain who are taking part in a sponsored Golfathon tomorrow at Strathmore Golf Centre.
The day will begin at 7.30am with round number one, then be followed by a slightly weary round 2 at 11.45.
The day will be complete with an exhausting round 3 at around 4.30pm.
The five team members participating are Alexandra Bushby who has organised the event, Carol Muir, Annabel Niven, Emily Ogilvy and Laura Walker.
I am hoping they will help me round, if not carry me round.
The three remaining team members are unfortunately unavailable, Carly Booth is competing in Belgium, Eve Muirhead is on Olympic curling duty and Jillian Milne has family commitments but they have all been involved in the gaining sponsors.
It is fantastic to see the girls supporting the county and helping to fund next month's participation in the County Finals at Inchmarlo. I am very proud of them all.
We wish the girls all the very best of luck and hope the sun will shine for them all! I will post the final tally soon.

Clare Queen two shots off
pace with two-under 69
in Finnair Masters

FROM THE LADIES' EUROPEAN TOUR WEBSITE
Spain’s Beatriz Recari shot a four-under-par 67 to lead by a stroke after the first round of the Finnair Masters in Helsinki, Finland today.
Clare Queen, pictured right by Cal Carson Golf Agency, is only two shots off the pace after a strong finish of birdies at the 14th, 16th and 17th for a 69. She had earlier boge3yed the fourth, birdied the short eighth and bogeyed the 12th.
Playing in cold conditions, Recari, the 21-year-old third year Ladies European Tour player from Pamplona carded five birdies on the back nine at Helsinki Golf Club for an outward total of 32, before playing the front nine in one-over 35.
Recari, who has completely remodelled her swing with her coach Ian Triggs over the last 12 months, was delighted to be leading a Ladies European Tour event for the first time. She posted a career best tie for 12th at the SAS Masters in Norway last week and on her current form she said:
“I think my game is just coming together. My attitude is better and I am enjoying it much more. I am more relaxed. My coach is always saying about seeing the shot and then hitting it. I shot seven-under in Norway and that was great. When you keep on shooting lower and lower and lower it helps you in the coming week. That was a great learning experience for me.”
Working on her co-ordination and biomechanics in the golf swing, along with adding muscle in the gym and a healthy new diet has helped Recari to add 20 metres of carry to her drives in recent months.
She added: “Not on this course, because it’s wet, but in Germany I was getting like 270 (metres). I am like, “Wow! This is a new life”.
Local player Ursula Wikstrom, 28, from Helsinki, shared second with 12-year-old Thai amateur Ariya Jutanugarn on three-under-par 68. Wikstrom’s round included three birdies, two bogeys and an eagle at the par-5 17th hole, but Jutanugarm fired three birdies and no bogeys.
Along with her 14-year-old sister Moriya, the golfing prodigy is playing in Finland on an invitation this week and she is rapidly gaining tournament experience after finishing in a share of 51st place at the 2007 Honda LPGA Thailand.
Jutanugarn was the youngest ever golfer to compete in an LPGA tournament when she played in the event last year at the age of 11 years, 11 months and 2 days. The previous record was held by Michelle Wie who played in the 2002 LPGA Takefuji Classic at the age of 12 years, 4 months and 14 days.
Now aged just short of 12 years and nine months, she is one of the youngest players to ever compete on the Ladies European Tour.
The Irish Maguire twins, Lisa and Leona, played in the BT Northern Ireland Ladies Open last year aged 12 years and 6 months, but they missed the cut. With her opening 68 Jutanugarn has a chance to win a professional event. “I wanted only to shoot even for the three days. This is a very good result,” she said, through an interpreter.
“I am very surprised. I feel it was very good fun today.”
Six players finished the day in a share of fourth place on two-under 69, including Finnish star Minea Blomvqvist and England’s Rebecca Hudson, who has already won in Tenerife and England this year. “It was up and down today,” said Hudson. “I’m very pleased with the result because I had some very good shots and some bad ones. I’ve been playing nicely for the last few weeks but not holing any shots.”
Lynn Kenny shot a level par 71 and Kathryn Imrie a 72 but Jenna Wilson had a 75 after a bouble bogey at the short third. She did birdie the second, 10th and 14th but a joint 62nd position after one round means she still has work to do beat the cut.

Carly drops back into share of second

place as Spanish girl goes clear

Overnight leader Carly Booth fell from grace with a third-round 78 in the Belgian junior international golf tournament at Royal Golf Club Belgium today.
The Comrie 16-year-old starts the final round on Saturday in joint second place with Kelsey MacDonald (Nairn Dunbar) nand Katherine O'Connor (Wales), seven shots behind the new pacemaker, Spain's Ana Fernandez de Mesa.
Carly had an erratic round of three birdies, at the first, seventh and 18th, but, on the debit side, she had a double bogey at the second and seven bogeys at regular intervals.
Kelsey too had an up-and-down round but she manage to salvage a one-over-par 73. She eagled the first hole, a par-5, but then bogeyed the seventh and double bogeyed the sixth and par-3 12th before finishing with birdies at the 13th and 17th.
The individual title may now be out of reach reach of the Scots but they still lead the team title race on 440, one shot ahead of Spain with Wales (445 (third).
In the boys' event David Law (Hazlehead) and Paul Shields (Kirkhill) are outwith the leading 20 on 221 and 222 respectively.
They are 13 shots behind leaders Wales in the boys' team event.

Kylie Walker (Buchanan Castle), the only Scot to survive the halfway cut, increased her tournament bag of birdies to eight, at the third and seventh, and got an eagle 3 at the last hole - which cost her a 7 in the first round - as she shot a one-over-par 74 to be in joint 27th place on 229 with one round to go in the European women's individual amateur golf championship at Schloss Schonborn Golf Club near Vienna, Austria.

Kirsty Brodie and Matthew Sime of the Strathmore Golf Club Junior Section (image by Dawn Butchart).
Matthew and Kirsty are Wee Wonders!

FROM DAWN BUTCHART, PERTH & KINROSS LADIES COUNTY CAPTAIN
Fantastic news from the Strathmore Golf Club Junior Section at the weekend! Our youngest member, Matthew Sime (5) along with junior girl member Kirsty Brodie, made it into the finals of the Wee Wonders at St Andrews.
They both played fantastic golf and Kirsty completed the weekend in third postition in her section. Kirsty is the nicest wee girl and smiled her way round the course both days. A great credit to her family and Strathmore. Well done Kirsty.
But the most amazing news is that our wee Matthew, who just recently turned five and qualified for the finals of the Wee Wonders at the age of four, the youngest ever qualifier, has been selected to represent GB&I in the Wee Wonders Tournament in America next year.
The GB&I team take on America over the Pinehurst Course in North Carolina next July. What amazing news for a wee lad who only just played on a golf course for the very first time in April. As you are aware the highest handicap a junior can obtain is 54 but wee Matthew, at the age of four, gained his first handicap of 46 and has, since April, reduced this to 32! Quite a wee star!

Kylie beats cut but Gemma and
Laura fail to survive

Kylie Walker's four birdies in the space of 10 holes could not quite wipe out a triple bogey 7 at the second and five bogeys in the second round of the European women's individual amateur golf championship at Schloss Schonborn Golf Club, near Vienna in Austria today.
Kylie, who birdied the seventh, ninth, 12th and 16th, finished on four-over-par 77 after an opening-day 78 which also included a triple bogey. Her 36-hole tally of nine-over 155 had her back in joint 40th place, a disappointing follow-up to last week's performance when she was beaten in a play-off by fellow Scot Roseanne Niven for the British women's open amateur stroke-play championship at Malone Golf Club, near Belfast.
But Kylie did survive the 36-hole cut with a couple of shots to spare.
All those with halfway totals of 156 or less qualified to play the final two rounds.
That meant the end of the tournamant for Majorca-based Scot Lauren Mackin and Hilton Park's Gemma Webster.
Lauren had an 83 for 162 and a share of 90th place.
Gemma had an 81 for 167 and joint 112th place in a field of 132.

Scotland girls are eight shots ahead in team event

Carly shows her class to go
three clear in Belgium

Carly Booth came out of her recent dip in form to take over the lead in the girls' championship of the Belgian international junior tournament at Royal Golf Club Belgium today.
The Comrie 16-year-old, pictured right by Cal Carson Golf Agency (all rights reserved), shot a three-under-par 69 for a 36-hole total of two-under-par 142 and a three-shot lead at the halfway stage.
Carly used her long-hitting power to birdie the three par-5s on the course, the first, fifth and 13th. She also birdied the seventh and ninth in a flawless outward half of four-under-par 32.
Coming home, she dropped shots at the 11th and 17th, either side of her birdie at the 13th, just when she looked like building an unassailable lead.
Scottish Under-21 champion Kelsey MacDonald (Nairn Dunbar) returned a tidy 73 for 147 and a share of fourth place. Kelsey could have been in joint second place but for late bogeys at the 15th and 17th. She had dropped an early shot at the second but birdies at the seventh and short 12th had her one under par for the day until the last few holes.
In the boys' championship, Aberdeen's David Law (Hazlehead), who had a 9 at a par-4 hole plus eagles at the first and last holes in his first round 76, scored a less spectacular, par-matching 72 for 148 and a share of 20th place. David bogeyed the first and sixth but cancelled them out with birdies at the 10th and 13th.
Paul Shields (Kirkhill) improved from 78 to 72 for joint 36th place on 150. Paul was three over par for the day after bogeys at the third, fifth and 12th but he finished strongly with birdies at the 13th, 16th and 18th to salvage a par round.
Sharing the boys' lead are Ireland's Rory McNamara and Dimitri Van Doren (Belgium) on four-under-par 140.
In the team events, the great efforts by Carly and Kelsey have put Scotland at the top of the table with a running tally of 289, which has given them an eight-stroke lead over Spain and Wales, both 297, with Italy next on 301. Ireland are lying 15th with 374.
Scotland are 10 shots off the lead in the boys' team event with a 36-hole tally of 298.
Wales and Ireland are sharing the pole position on 288, five ahead of Italy (293) with Finland and Denmark (both 294), just ahead of the Czech Republic (295).

Three new caps in England team
for Home Internationals

PRESS RELEASE ISSUED BY THE ENGLISH WOMEN'S GOLF ASSOCIATION
Three new caps, including the teenage English champion Hannah Barwood, will represent England in the Home International matches at Wrexham from September 10-12.
The other new caps are Charlotte Ellis of Gloucestershire, who was the 2006 English mid-amateur champion, and Manchester teenager Rachel Connor, who helped England win the Girls’ Home Internationals and to claim a silver medal in the European girls’ team championship.
They will be joined by five established internationals: the Hampshire duo of Liz Bennett and Kerry Smith, Yorkshire’s Naomi Edwards, Staffordshire’s Rachel Jennings and Lancashire’s Florentyna Parker.
England have won the Home Internationals for the last three years – and 13 times in the last 16 editions of the competition.
Hannah Barwood, 18, from Knowle, pictured above by Cal Carson Golf Agency (all rights reserved), is a long-standing England girl international and now moves on to the wider stage. She won the English championship in May and has since helped England win the Girls’ International Matches and take a silver medal in the European girls’ team championship.
Liz Bennett, 25, of Brokenhurst Manor, is a Curtis Cup player and earlier this season won on the Orange Blossom Tour in the USA. She is a former English stroke-play champion and qualified for this year’s Ricoh Women’s British Open. She will represent England in the World Amateur Team Championships in October.
Rachel Connor, 18, of Manchester, is another leading England girl international and, like Hannah Barwood, played a key role in the girls’ team successes this season. She has also previously won two top women’s scratch events.
Naomi Edwards, 25, of Ganton, is a former Curtis Cup player and English champion. She qualified for thi s year’s Women’s British Open. Naomi and Kerry Smith were members of the Great Britain team which won the 2007 Commonwealth Tournament.
Charlotte Ellis, 22, of Minchinhampton, was the 2006 English mid-amateur champion. She’s the South-west champion and led the pre-qualifiers for the Women’s British Open. She had a top 10 finish in the English stroke-play championship and was a semi-finalist in the English championship.
Rachel Jennings, 20, of Izaak Walton, is the French junior ladies' champion and a past winner of the English girls’ championship. She was a Curtis Cup reserve and will represent England in the World Amateur Team Championships.
Florentyna Parker, 19, of Royal Birkdale, is a Curtis Cup player and was the runner-up in the English championship. She’s a past winner of the French junior ladies' championship, was runner-up in the 2007 British stroke-play and won last season’s English girls’ order of merit.
Kerry Smith, 36, of Waterlooville, is a former Curtis Cup player and English champion. Kerry and Florentyna Parker led the way for England in the recent British stroke-play championship and shared 10th place.
Neither English strokeplay champion and Curtis Cup player Jodi Ewart (Catterick) nor Hannah Burke (Mid-Herts), who played against the pros in the English Ladies’ Open, were available for selection because of US college commitments.
The England team will be captained by Devon’s Sally Watkins (Teignmouth).

Kylie Walker (78) leading Scot in
European individual championship

The three Scots entries in the quality field for the European women's individual amateur championship were well off the pace at the end of the first of four rounds at Schloss Schonburn Golf Club in Austria.
Kylie Walker (Buchanan Castle), beaten by Roseanne Niven in a play-off for the British women's open amateur stroke-play title last Friday, was in joint 53rd place in a field of 132 with a round of 78 over the par-73 course.
Kylie birdied the seventh and 17th in halves of 39 (three over par) and 39 (two over). She ran up a double bogey 7 at the par-5 last hole.
Majorca-based Scot Lauren Mackin had a 79 (39-40). Her only birdie came at the 12th.
Gemma Webster (Hilton Park)had a 13-over-par 86 with halves of 44 and 42. She had double bogeys at the fourth, the short fifth and the long 13th.
Christel Boeljohn from the Netherlands was the first round leader with a four-under-par 69.
She had a one-shot advantage over four players, including Spanish teenager Carlota Ciganda who won this European title four years ago when she was 14. She also won the British women's open amateur title last year at Leeds and did not defend it at North Berwick in June.
Laura Gonzalez-Escallon, the Belgian teenager who won the British girls' open amateur championship at Monifieth a couple of weeks ago, is in sixth place on 71.

PGA GIRLS PLAY IN INSCH PRO-AM

Former British women's amateur stroke-play champion Heather MacRae from Dunblane, now training as a PGA assistant professional at Gullane, and Katie Thomson (Aspire Golf Centre), a past Aberdeenshire women's amateur county champion, are in the field for the £4,500 Acergy Young Professionals' pro-am at Insch Golf Club, Aberdeenshire on Friday, September 12.

+Katie played as a pro in the inaugural Hacienda del Alamo Women's Winter Golf Festival earlier this year. We're hoping that both Katie and Heather will play in the 2009 HDA Festival. Watch this space!

Marc Warren is right - you
need to enter the
Hacienda del Alamo
Festival to get in
Winter Practice

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Here's an unsolicited advertisement for the 2009 Hacienda del Alamo Women's Winter Golf Festival (February 11 to 17) from a MAN.
Glasgow's Marc Warren, who defends the Johnnie Walker Championship at Gleneagles this week, told Mike Aitken of "The Scotsman" yesterday:
"You can't practise your short game in Scotland in the winter. You don't see the true flight of the ball and it's difficult to see what's actually happening. I want my practice to be more about playing rather than just trying to swing it pretty."
Marc could also have said you can't practise your short game in England, Ireland, Wales, the Scandinavian countries, in fact anywhere in Northern Europe during the winter.
That's why Billy Sim, the director of golf at Hacienda del Alamo, and I started the HDA Women's Winter Festival in February this year.
It was to give female golfers - professionals who can't afford to go Australia and such places, and amateurs (including over-50 seniors and Under-18 girls) with handicaps up to 20 - the chance to put in some sustained practice at Hacienda del Alamo Golf Resort's five-star practice facilities with the bonus of competitive play to put to the test what you have been working on in practice.
There are four events over the long weekend. But you don't need to play in them all.
Don't think because there will be lady professionals playing, that you have no chance of winning any prizes. Each section has its own prize list.
Pringle, Stewart Spence (The Marcliffe at Pitfodels Hotel, Aberdeen) and an oil company who don't want to be named but are delighted to support ladies/girls' golf are our sponsors. But we are always looking to add to the list.
If you want all the details about the 2009 Hacienda del Alamo Women's Winter Festival E-mailed to you or you have questions to ask, E-mail Colin@Scottishgolfview.com
January 15 is the closing date for entries but you can enter now.

SCOTS HAVE STRONG QUARTET IN ACTION
IN BELGIAN JUNIOR NATIONS CUP

Scotland has a strong quartet in the field for the Belgian Junior Nations Cup tournament at Royal Golf Club Belgique, teeing off on Wednesday morning and ending on Saturday.

Carly Booth (Comrie) and Kelsey MacDonald (Nairn Dunbar), Scotland's Under-18 and Under-21 girl champions, are accompanied by David Law (Hazlehead) and Paul Shields (Kirkhill).

England has never supported this event but Wales's team is: Amy Boulden, Katherine O'Connor, Ross McLister and Chris Nugent.

We'll have the results for you on this website at the end of each day's play.

Last year Scotland won both the boys' and girls' international team trophies - Kelsey and Megan Briggs (Kilmacolm) + Andrew McLachlan (Bonnyton) and David Law. Fingers crossed for a repeat performance!

United States finalise
Junior Ryder Cup team
By COLIN FARQUHARSON
The United States' Junior Ryder Cup Team was named following the conclusion of the Junior PGA Championship at TPC River's Bend in Maineville, Ohio.
The final two places on the mixed team of six boys and six girls were given, not surprisingly, to the top two finishers in the Junior PGA Championship – boys' champion Anthony Paolucci and runner-up Jordan Spieth, and girls' champion Danielle Frasier and runner-up Sarah Brown.
Spieth, pictured right by Cal Carson Golf Agency, played at Hesketh in the R&A Junior Open in July - and went very close to winning the title.
The Junior Ryder Cup will be played at The Club at Olde Stone in Bowling Green, Kentucky on September 15 and 16.
“Any time you get to represent your country and play in the Junior Ryder Cup it is an honour,” Paolucci said. “I am excited to play on the American team this year.”
PGA of America past president Ken Lindsay, the U.S. Junior Ryder Cup team captain, selected Jeffrey Kang and Tiffany Lua with his captain’s picks.
Participants in the 2008 Junior Ryder Cup will also play a nine-hole “friendship” match at the Ryder Cup venue, Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Kentucky, the day before the men's pro event starts.

THOUGHT-PROVOKING QUERY
The Junior Solheim Cup match mirrors the grown-ups' Solheim Cup by being all girls ... why isn't the Junior Ryder Cup match for boys only?
And here's another difference within the Junior Ryder Cup match I was not aware of:
The European team are all Under-16 or were under-16 years at a certain date on the calendar.
But the Americans use a different age selection criteria which involves the high school graduation date of the youngster involved.
For the 2008 Junior Ryder Cup match, the American selections had to be 2009 high school graduates (or younger). This, in effect, raises the age limit bar to 17 years.
Speak about level playing fields! They can't even get one for the selection process of the European and American teams.
I ran into this "high school graduation date" importance when I talked to the US university talent scouts at the recent British girls' open championship at Monifieth.
They told me they were looking for "2009 high school graduates," i.e. girls who would be old enough to go on to college after the summer of 2009.
In this country a golf talent scout would be far more interested in a youngster's date of birth ... but they do things differently in America.
Much the same as in Great Britain & Ireland, we tend to give an amateur golfer's name and put his or her home club's name in brackets after it.
But in the States, an amateur player's golf club is not mentioned. Instead, tournament organisters list the player's home town or city.
Strange but true. Two nations separated by a common language.
Speaking of languages.
It must be a joke started somewhere south of the Border .... The fact that the LPGA are going to make the ability to speak and understand English mandatory to play on the world's No 1 female tour could make it tough for Scottish players, let alone South Koreans in the future!
Of course, we Scots are not aware that we speak English any differently to anyone else.
I remember the time I telephoned someone I had not spoken to for some time and he greeted me with "How nice to hear an Aberdeen accent again!"
Aberdeen accent? What Aberdeen accent?

Sentimental journey to Scotland for Barbara Vazana
Pictured above is Barbara Vazana at home in Israel. In the background is a painting by her husband "of Aberdeen as seen from his studio when we lived there from 1980 to 1986" and on the right a Cal Carson Golf Agency image of Laetitia Beck, the teenage Israeli women's champion, whom Barbara chaperoned on their trip to Monifieth for the recent British girls' championship.
Sixteen-year- old Laetitia studies at the IMG David Leadbetter Golf Academy in Florida and spends a lot of her holiday time competing in international competitions. She misses her home in Israel but golf is number one for her.
She is very highly regarded in Israel for her prowess, being named as one the outstanding "Sportswomen of the Decade" by the Ministry of Sport.
Barbara lived in Scotland for 20 years of which 13 were spent in Letham Grange, where she moved from Aberdeen just before Henry Cotton opened the championship course there in the summer of 1986.
In 1999 she returned to her home in Israel. When it became known that the 2008 British girls' open championship was to be played at Monifieth, the Israel Golfing Association asked Barbara to accompany Laetitia.
She was, of course, delighted to return to Angus where she was involved in county golf during those years.
"I have a dream that golf will one day become a popular sport in Israel," said Barbara. "At the moment we just have one proper available course of nine holes as our only 18-hole course at Caesarea is undergoing a complete revamping - to a design by Pete Dye – so they just made a temporary nine-hole par-3 course! More has to be done to bring the game to our young," she sighed, then smiled as she added "and older ones too!"
Laetitia, whose sister Liora also made the trip to Monifieth, will be returning to Scotland in September for The Duke of York Young Champions' Trophy tournament at Dundonald Links.
At Monifieth, Miss Beck was one of the leading qualifiers for the match-play stages but lost to the eventual champion and No 1 seed, Belgium's Laura Gonzalez-Escallon, in the semi-finals.

Alex Peters retains North of
England Under-16s title
at Heswall

PRESS RELEASE ISSUED BY ENGLISH WOMEN'S GOLF ASSOCIATION
England girl international Alex Peters has successfully defended her title as North of England Under-16 girls’ champion.
Alex, pictured right by Cal Carson Golf Agency in the recent British girls championship at Monifieth, from Notts Ladies, pipped fellow girl international Heidi Baek by one shot in the open event at Heswall.
Both 14-year-olds helped England win the girls’ home internationals at Panmure Golf Club, Carnoustie earlier this month.
During the 72-hole event Alex equalled the course record she set last year with a three-under 71 in the second round.
Elizabeth Mallett of Sutton Coldfield Ladies shared second place in the girls’ Under-14 event. The championship was preceded by the annual Under-16 mixed match between England and Spain. The honours went to Spain this year. They won 8½-3½.
Wiltshire’s Hannah Turland (Tidworth Garrison) was unbeaten in the match, pairing up with Elizabeth Mallett to halve her foursomes and winning her singles 5 and 4.
England were also represented by Hayley Davis (Ferndown) and Sophie Godley (Lindrick).

The 72-hole tournaments start next Tuesday and ends on the Friday.
The men will play at Gary Player Country Club, a course in excess of 7,000yd. The women will play at Lost City golf course.
David Booth and Paul Betty (both Stirling University) and Laura Murray (Robert Gordon University), pictured right by Cal Carson Golf Agency (all rights reserved), are members of the official seven-strong Great Britain team.
Also in the official Great Britain team are Adam Best (Teeside University), Andrew Shakespear (Bournemouth University), Anna Scott (Georgia State University) and Lucy Williams (Birmingham University).
Curtis Cup reserve Danielle McVeigh (Royal Co Down Golf Club), a student at Texas A&M University for the past two years, will be defending the women's title she won in Thailand last year.
Danielle has left Texas A&M University after two years. She is joining NUIM – National University of Ireland, Maynooth.
There are already fve students on the Paddy Harrington Golf Scholarship programme and she is joining this programme. Others on the programme are Sarah Cunningham, Anne McCormack, Louise Mernagh, Aedin Murphy and Ciara Walsh. Lucy Simpson is also joining this year.
Gillian O'Leary (University College Cork) and Niamh Kitching (Limerick University) are also in the official Ireland team South Africa, which includes male students Cian Curley, Ciaran O'Connor, Kelan McDonagh and James Patterson.
From the official championship website, it would seem that England's Hannah Burke (Baylor University, Texas) has entered as an individual. Her name is down for a practice round, which would suggest she is going to be there!

Eilidh Briggs wins Renfrewshire Junior Championship for the third year in a row

Thanks to Carol Fell, Renfrewshire webmaster, for this report

Alyson McKechin and Eilidh Briggs -- Click to enlarge

Alyson and Eilidh -- Click to enlarge
Played over Old Ranfurly Golf Course
Semi Finals:
Eilidh Briggs (Kilmacolm) beat Lesley Cosh (Cowglen) 2 and 1
Alyson McKechin ( Elderslie)beat Natasha Qayum ( Ranfurly Castle) 2 and 1
Very Close matches:
Lesley played great golf to push Eilidh right down the wire. Lesley had about 13 pars in her round, won the 15th to go 1 down -- lost the 16th to a birdie 2 to go 2 down -- then hit the pin at the 17th which did not drop and therefore a par was enough for Eilidh to win her match 2 and 1
Alyson and Natasha -- also a close match -- Natasha 2 down going to the 15th -- sank a good putt to go 1 down. Alison won the 16th -- Natasha fired a brilliant shot into the 17th but was unable to get a birdie to allow the match to go down the 18th
WELL DONE TO YOU ALL -- GREAT GOLF
Final:
Eilidh defeated Alyson 2/1

The golf throughout the final was of a very high standard. The quality of ball striking from both girls was excellent. After an early exchange of holes Alyson edged 2 ahead at the turn going 3 ahead at the next.
Eilidh responded to this making birdie at two of the next three holes to level the game after 13 holes. A couple of errors allowed Eilidh to edge ahead by 2 with two holes to play and a solid 4 at seventeen saw her take the title for the THIRD year in a row.
Congratulations to all four girls who played today as many fine golf shots were witnessed over the day's play.

South Koreans (and others) must learn
to speak English, say LPGA Tour

It had to come. Some way of checking the mounting numbers of South Koreans playing on the LPGA Tour.
Beginning next year, all players who have been on the LPGA Tour for two years must pass an oral evaluation of their ability to converse in the English language.
At a mandatory meeting during the Safeway Classic last week, LPGA officials informed its largest international contingent that failure to pass the language test would result in suspended membership, i.e. the player would not be able to play in LPGA tournaments.
Libba Galloway, the tour’s deputy commissioner, said the new language policy takes effect immediately, but the “measurement time will be at the end of 2009.”
There are 121 international players from 26 countries on the LPGA Tour. Some 45 of them are South Koreans.
Hilary Lunke, president of the Player Executive Committee, said much of this initiative stems from the importance of being able to entertain pro-am partners. Players already are fined if the LPGA receives complaints from their pro-am partners about their inability to converse in English.
Players who obtain tour status at Qualifying School later this year will have two years to meet the English requirements.
Galloway said an impression had to be made that communicating effectively in English is fundamental to the tour’s business.
South Korean Seon-Hwa Lee, a winner twice this year, said she believes everyone should be able to do a simple media interview. She works with an English tutor in the winter and plans to brush up for the evaluation.
Kate Peters, executive director of the LPGA State Farm Classic, supported the news. “This is an American tour. It is important for sponsors to be able to interact with players and have a positive experience.”
The tour will rely on its communication staff to help identify players who need to be evaluated. International players who already demonstrate English proficiency will not be approached.
Players must be able to conduct interviews and give acceptance speeches without the help of a translator.
A large number of South Koreans play the US Duramed Futures Tour which is now officially part of the LPGA set-up. Expect the "speak-English-please" dictat to apply to it as well.

SLGA NAME TEAMS FOR HOME INTERNATIONALS,
WOMEN'S WORLD AMATEUR TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP

The Scottish Ladies Golfing Association has named the following teams:

Women's Home Internationals, Wrexham GC, September 10-12:
Megan Briggs (Kilmacolm)
Kelsey MacDonald (Nairn Dunbar)
Laura Murray (Alford)
Emily Ogilvy (Auchterarder)
Pamela Pretswell (Bothwell Castle)
Michele Thomson (McDonald Ellon)
Kylie Walker (Bothwell Castle)
Sally Watson (Elie & Earlsferry Ladies).
Team captain
Lesley Nicholson (Haddington)
Reserves:
Louise Kenney (Pitreavie)
Jane Turner (Craigielaw)
Rachael Livingstone (Musselburgh)
Rebecca Wilson (Monifieth).

World women's amateur team championship, Espirito Santo Trophy, Grange GC, Adelaide, Australia, October 8-11:

Krystle Caithness (St Regulus)
Roseanne Niven (Crieff)
Kylie Walker (Buchanan Castle).
Reserves:
Pamela Pretswell (Bothwell Castle)
Kelsey MacDonald (Nairn Dunbar).

(Uninformed) comments from Colin Farquharson:

The SLGA do not issue notes alongwith their team selections so we have to presume certain things, such as the Scots at universities in America, i.e. Roseanne Niven and Krystle Caithness are not being released by their colleges for the Women's Home Internationals, which don't mean much in the States, but they (the US universities) do recognise the worldwide prestige and importance of the Espirito Santo Trophy, so that all US-based students who are good enough to be selected are released to play for their home countries in that tournament in Australia.
Carly Booth is not in the Scotland team for the WHI because that week she - and Ireland's Maguire twins plus Kelly Tidy (England) - will be playing for Europe in the Junior Ryder Cup match in Kentucky.
There are two changes in the Scotland team for Wrexham compared with last year's WHI at Dunbar. Jenna Wilson has since turned professional and Carly Booth, as stated, is unavailable. Their places are filled by Kylie Walker, who has had such a great season, and Curtis Cup player Sally Watson who has not played competitively since she had a knee operation on Wednesday, June 4, immediately after the match against the United States over the Old Course, St Andrews.

ENNIS TO DEFEND TITLE

PRESS RELEASE ISSUE BY IRISH LADIES GOLF UNION
The five District Champions Ennis, Kilkenny, Roscommon, Royal Portrush and The Island join this year’s back-door graduates Douglas, Slieve Russell and Woodbrook in the Irish quarter-finals of the 2008 Suzuki Senior Cup at Galway Golf Club on Friday (August 29).
Favourites Ennis will look to the experience of Tricia McDonnell to claim back-to-back victories for the Clare side having won the title for the first time last year at Milltown. Youngsters Sarah Cunningham and Ciara Pender are once again in action but will need to be in top form to see off a feisty Kilkenny who will be ably led by double-nineties Irish champion Eileen Rose Power and youngsters Rebecca Muholland and Sinead Slater.
The talented Maguire sisters, Leona and Lisa, will fly the flag for Slieve Russell as they take on Eastern District Champions The Island. Teenagers Sarah Carty and Rachel Cassidy should prove a stern test for the twins while double girls champion Suzy Sheehan, albeit 24 years ago, makes a welcome return to competitive play having re-joined the amateur ranks earlier this year.
Past Internationals Eavan Higgins and Kate MacCann lead twelve times champions Douglas into battle with an unknown quantity in Roscommon who field Connacht champion and past Girl International Anne McCormack and the talented Ailbhe Farrell in their ranks.
The final tie sees second favourites and 22 times champions Royal Portrush, led by past International Helen Jones, who will field the in-form Gemma Hegarty and Lucy Simpson.
The northern side should prove too strong for the talented Sue Phillips and her Woodbrook teammates who have only previously once succeeded at this level in 1969.
All four quarter-finals take place on Friday with the semi-finalists lining up Saturday morning at 8am. Whatever the outcome, Saturday is sure to see a feast of competitive golf for the ILGU’s blue-ribboned Senior Cup as the cream of elite club golf convene at Galway for the weekend.

Kylie, Gemma and Lauren off to
Austria for Euro championship

Three Scots - Kylie Walker (Buchanan Castle), Gemma Webster (HiltonAdd Image Park) and Majorca-based Lauren Mackin - are among the 120 entries for the European women's individual amateur golf championship over 72 holes at Schloss Schonburn Golf Club, Austria from Wednesday to Saturday this week.
All three played in the British women's open amateur stroke-play championship at Malone Golf Club, near Belfast last week when Kylie lost to Roseanne Niven (Crieff) in a play-off for the title.
Germany (25) have the most entries followed by host nation Austria (20) and France (19).
Spain's six include former British women's open amateur champion Carlota Ciganda who lost in a title play-off to Caroline Hedwall (Sweden) last year after winning the championship in 2004 when she was only 14 years of age.
Neither of the Hedwall twins, Caroline and Jacqueline, is among the Swedish entries, presumably because both are enrolling for the first time at different American universities this month.
There are no Irish entries but eight from England and four from Wales.

ENTRIES INCLUDE:

SCOTLAND
Lauren Mackin (Majorca).
Kylie Walker (Buchanan Castle).
Gemma Webster (Hilton Park).
ENGLAND

Catriona's sixth place in Safeway
Classic earns her $42,842

Catriona Matthew finished joint sixth in the weekend LPGA Tour's Safeway Classic won by American Cristie Kerr after a three-way play-off with Sofie Gustafsson and Helen Alfredsson.
Catriona earned $43,842 boosting her season's tour earnings to $344,202, which puts her 45th in the money table.
Janice Moodie tied for 36th place in the Safeway Classic, earning $9,052 and giving her a season's running total of $157,010 (62nd place).
Mhairi McKay did not survive the cut and did not add to her season's earnings of $75,019 (104th place).

EQUALITY OF SEXES NOTE:
Catriona Matthew finishes joint sixth in the LPGA Tour's Safeway Classic and earns $43,842.
Meanwhile, elsewhere in America on Sunday, fellow Scot Martin Laird finishes joint seventh in The Barclays Championship and collects a pay cheque for $203,700.
Maybe that's why Michele Wie has a thing about playing in men's events - the rate of pay is so much higher!

Gwladys Nocera wins her third LET
event of season at SAS Masters

FROM THE LADIES EUROPEAN TOUR WEBSITE
Gwladys Nocera notched her eighth Ladies European Tour victory at the SAS Ladies Masters in Oslo, Norway.
Starting the third and final round a shot behind Diana Luna of Italy, the 33-year-old from France closed with a four-under 68 to finish on 13-under-par 203 at Haga Golf Club.
She won by three from Spaniard Tania Elosegui, who had a 67 and England’s Samantha Head, who had a 68, with a further eight players in a share of third place on eight-under-par.
The victory was Nocera’s third of the season and underlined her dominance on the LET this year after wins in Scotland and the Netherlands.
She became the sole player to have won three times this year, a feat she also achieved in 2006, but still lies in second place on the New Star Money List behind Sweden’s Helen Alfredsson, who won the lucrative Evian Masters in July.
“My aim is still to win the New Star Money List so I knew I had to win at least this week and a couple more. I’m getting closer to my goal but I still have a lot of work to do,” said the two-time Solheim Cup player.
“I really played well today, the best round of the week.”
Nocera made two birdies and two bogeys on the front nine to find herself in a tie for the lead with Luna after nine holes on the final day.
After both players birdied the par-five 10th hole, they remained neck and neck but Luna bogeyed the 12th hole giving Nocera the advantage.
At the 481yd par-5 14th hole, Nocera rolled in a 23 footer for eagle and then cemented her lead with back to back birdies on holes 16 and 17. At the 372yd, par-4 18th hole, Nocera found the water on the right with her tee shot, but maintained her composure to take a bogey. “I didn’t see it until I got there and I knew I had a four stroke lead so it was alright. I just had to make a five and go with it,” she explained.
“When I was 13-under after 16 I knew I was fine so I just had time to think about it, that is why I am cool now, because I had three holes to think about the win.”
Head, who earned two victories on the LET, in 1999 and 2001, posted her best finish since the 2005 OTP Bank Ladies Central European Open in Hungary. She said that she had been struggling until a forced break from golf due to tonsillitis gave her time to review the situation.
“I wasn’t shooting any low scores and a couple of weeks ago I had to pull out of the British Open after qualifying and I was so gutted but it gave me two weeks off to think about why I’m not shooting low scores. Those two weeks off really helped me,” she explained.
“I was not holing enough putts. That was it. I just thought about how I’m going to hole more putts. I worked in my own head, visualisation and all that stuff. I did it by myself.”
On her renewed confidence, she added: “I feel like there is a win in me but obviously I’m not ready yet. I wasn’t ready this week but every week is a new week so I’m just waiting and being patient.”
Elosegui also posted a season best finish, hoisting herself from a share of eighth place entering the final round.” I’m very happy. I was struggling a bit with the putting at the beginning. I only had two birdies on the front nine. I made birdies on one and six. I hit a very good seven iron into 14 and made the putt for eagle so that was great,” she said.
“I was quite nervous at the end but I managed to get a birdie on 17 with two putts. I felt so nervous and the putts were short on 17 and 18 but I am happy.”
The leading Norwegian player was Marianne Skarpnord, who shot a closing 70 to share 16th place on five-under-par, while the leading amateur was Norway’s Lene Krog.

Sammy Vass wins
three-way play-off
for North girls'

title at Banchory

Scotland girl international Sammy Vass from Tain won a three-way play-off for the North of Scotland girls' golf championship at Banchory Golf Club today.
Sammy, 16, beat her 14-year-old sister Julie and 16-year-old Samantha Leslie (Murcar Links) at the second extra hole after they had tied on 77 at the head of a field of 26 girls.
Samantha Leslie had the chance to lift the Under-18s regional title at the first extra hole (the 17th) where her approach shot hit the flagstick but she could not hole the birdie putt. Julie Vass was eliminated with a bogey at that hole.
At the second extra hole (the 18th), Leslie drove out of bounds and took four shots to reach the putting surface while Sammy Vass was on in three - and holed a 10ft downhill putt for a trophy-winning par 4.
Kirsten MacCallum (McDonald Ellon) won the Jean Law Trophy for the best net score of 69 off 11 ahead of Louise McGillivray (Banchory) (7) and Seren Anderson (Deeside) who both had net 71s. Louise had the better inward half.
It was not the first play-off in the history of the North of Scotland girls championship. In 2004 at Inchmarlo Golf Centre, Katy McNicoll (Carnoustie) beat Laura Murray (Alford) in a play-off after they had tied at the end of 18 holes' stroke-play.

Helen Alfredsson edges ahead
in LPGA's Safeway Classic

FROM THE AOL GOLF NEWS SERVICE
Helen Alfredsson grabbed a one-shot lead at the LPGA Tour's Safeway Classic on Saturday after shooting a second-round 67 at the Columbia Edgewater Country Club.
The Swede carded a second consecutive five-under-par effort to move to 10-under, one stroke ahead of countrywoman Sophie Gustafson.
"I think I've been striking it much, much better and I think a little bit more with confidence," Alfredsson said. "Before, I felt like the ball really could go anywhere and it was a struggle all the time."
Gustafson, who stood at 11-under after 15 holes, was pleased with her day`s work despite consecutive bogeys on the 16th and 17th that saw her finish with a 68.
Kelli Kuehne is tied for third place with Paula Creamer after posting a two-under round of 70.
Cristie Kerr, who fired a 67, leads a group of seven players on six-under. She birdied four consecutive holes on her way to a 33 on the front nine.
Katherine Hull, who captured the Canadian Women's Open last week, sank five birdies in a flawless 67 to also finish six-under.
First-round leader Angela Park struggled, however, recording four birdies, three bogeys and a double-bogey en route to a one-over 73, leaving her five shots behind Alfredsson.
Karrie Webb and Lorena Ochoa also sit at five-under for the tournament.
