Northern Division inter-county women's team championship

ANGUS AND ABERDEENSHIRE WIN
OPENING MATCHES AT CRUDEN BAY

A 6-3 win by Aberdeenshire over title-holders Perth & Kinross - who won all three matches at Crieff 12 months ago - was not entirely unexpected on the opening day of the Northern Division women's inter-county team championship at Cruden Bay today.
But for Angus to beat Northern Counties, champions three years in a row unless finishing runners-up to P&K last year, 5 1/2-3 1/2 was a surprise to everyone except the Angus players and officials.
Angus clicked right away in the morning foursomes, taking them 2 1/2-1/2 and the confidence derived from that spilled over into the singles which were shared 3-3.
Dawn Dewar, a former Angus county champion as a teenager, had a very good win by two holes over the talented Kelsey MacDonald.
Shonagh Raitt won by 4 and 3 over Ashton Ingram and Angus's third singles point came from Fiona Gilbert, by one hole over Laura Walker.
Aberdeenshire, like Angus, carried over a 2pt lead into the singles and what a difference that makes. Shire won two singles through Laura Murray and debutante Sara Thomson and halved three other ties.
The most meritorious half-point for Aberdeenshire was secured by Laura McLardy who was four down with five to play against Scotland international Roseanne Niven and secured a square game out of it. Some finish!
