Royal Aberdeen & Irvine swop LGU events in 2009 because of clash of dates with oil exhibition

A clash of dates with the 2009 North Sea Oil Exhibition has forced the Ladies Golf Union to cancel plans to stage next year's women's home international matches at Balgownie in September. Instead, Royal Aberdeen Golf Club will host the British women's open amateur stroke-play championship over 72 holes from August 19 to 21.
Irvine Golf Club, which was due to stage the stroke-play event, will now take over the women's home internationals from September 9 to 11.
The clubs agreed to the Ladies Golf Union suggestion of a swop when it was realised that the biennial North Sea Oil Exhibition & Conference, would be held at the Aberdeen Conference Centre, quite close to Royal Aberdeen Golf Club, during the planned September week of the home internationals.
Traditionally, every hotel in Aberdeen is booked out well in advance for the week of the North Sea Oil Exhibition and there was the added factor of traffic congestion at the access road to the Royal Aberdeen clubhouse, which might have delayed the international golf teams going to or coming from the course from their hotel, had they been able to find accommodation somewhere out of the city.
Susan Simpson, the Ladies Golf Union Head of Golf Operations at its St Andrews headquarters, commented:
"This very unusual situation came to light when we tried to book accommodation for the 2009 Home International Matches. There was not a bed to be had in Aberdeen that September week. We were left with no option but to seek an alternative venue.
"Both Royal Aberdeen and Irvine Golf Clubs were delighted to assist and facilitated a straight swap of fixtures."
So the British women's open amateur stroke-play championship will go on at Royal Aberdeen GC from August 19 to 21 while the women's home international matches will be played at Irvine Golf Club from September 9 to 11.
Other flagship events of the Ladies Golf Union 2009 tournament schedule will see the RICOH Women's British Open being played at Royal Lytham & St Annes, Lancashire from July 30 to August 2.
And the British women's open amateur championship will be hosted by Royal St David's Golf Club, Harlech in North Wales.
