LADIES' ENGLISH OPEN SUCCESS FOR WELSH PLAYER

BECKY BREWERTON SCORES HER FIRST
WIN ON THE LADIES' EUROPEAN
TOUR AT LAST - BY THREE STROKES

FROM THE LADIES EUROPEAN TOUR WEBSITE

Wales’ Becky Brewerton carded a final round 68 to clinch her maiden career Ladies European Tour victory at the Ladies English Open, in association with Golf Punk, today.
The popular 24-year-old from Abergele mixed five birdies and one bogey for a seven-under-par 209 total and a three shot victory over Sweden’s Linda Wessberg (68), England’s Kirsty Taylor (69) and Karen Stupples (71) at Chart Hills Golf Club in Kent.
Having come close to her first win on numerous previous occasions over the last four years – she has posted 16 top-10 finishes, including four runner-up spots - Brewerton was understandably emotional.
“It means so much to me. I’ve been trying for so long. To finally do it is just unbelievable, unbelievable,” said Brewerton, fighting back tears. “I can’t believe it. I’m just in shock.”
Wales’ top player on the LET began the day in a four-way tie for the lead with Stupples, compatriot Eleanor Pilgrim and Sweden’s Cecilia Ekelundh. She was tied for the lead with Stupples on five-under-par at the turn after a solid outward half of 34 but picked up birdies at holes 10, 12 and 16 to reach eight-under-par with a four-stroke cushion standing on the 18th tee.
Becky, pictured above with the trophy, from the LET website, was able to bogey the last to seal her victory and a first prize of €24,750 and she added: “To have had such a cushion coming up the last was just massive. It was such a good situation to be in. I tried not to think about winning it because the 18th tee shot is not my favourite tee shot. I’ve hit it left the first two days and today I hit it right.
PUMPED UP AT FINISH
"I thought it would be okay because there’s quite a lot of room out there but it went a bit further than I thought because I was pumped up.”
Brewerton took a penalty drop aside the 18th fairway, where she had a poor lie next to a tree, before hitting her third shot to 20 feet and two putting.
“When I took the penalty drop it was a case of just making it onto the green. I knew then, even if I three-putted I would still win so it was nice to have a tap in there and get it over with!”
Brewerton was then soaked in champagne by her friends Danielle Masters and Lynn Kenny before running into the crowd to celebrate with parents Steve and Paula.
“It was just so good to have my mum and dad here. I always thought they’d be here for my first win. This is only the second event they’ve been to this year,” said Brewerton.
“My mum’s got MS and she’s done so well this week to walk round three rounds.”
Proud dad Steve, who caddied for Brewerton at last year’s event and also when she finished tied for third place in 2005, conceded that her new bagman Fred Collins had brought her better luck. “She held herself together so well today,” said Steve.
“There were a couple of bad holes but I knew she’d recover fantastically; even on the last hole – awesome. To win is just fantastic – it’s all she’s ever wanted to do. Awesome.”
Brewerton moves up one place to sixth on the New Star Money List and jumps from ninth to fourth place in the European Solheim Cup Team qualification list. The top five players following the Wales Ladies Championship in August will face the United States team at Halmstad in September.
SOLHEIM CUP SELECTION
“That’s massive. Obviously now it’s getting to a really crucial stage. We’ve got the Evian, the British, Swedish and Wales still left for other people still to get in but I’ve given myself a really good chance now,” said Brewerton.
“If I can come into some good form for those four tournaments that would be amazing but again I’ve got to try so hard not to think about that because it’s just so exciting to be in with a chance.”
Stupples, who was playing in her first tournament since giving birth 10 weeks ago, was pleased with her efforts and said: “This tournament is really two weeks early for me from where I wanted to be fitness wise. I’m so happy. Tied for second – what more could I ask for really?
“I started to really run out of steam once I’d made the turn. It was not so much physically as the mentally that the steam ran out.
“When it came to the crunch, a lack of competition and having plodded my way around a golf course for the last month or so with nothing riding on it took its toll. Really I exceeded any kind of expectations I had for the week and I can only be really happy with what I’ve done.
“It really was the first 18 holes I’d played since November on the first day – I didn’t even get to play 18 holes in the pro-am. And doing it three consecutive days was my concern – and it showed in all fairness.
"Becky played really solidly today – she hit the ball great. And she deserves her first win. She’s a very popular winner.”
AMATEUR MELISSA FINISHES 9th
England’s Laura Davies and France’s Gwladys Nocera tied for fifth place on three-under-par after they both carded 71s. Davies’ was a mixed bag with a double and two bogeys on the front nine and a birdie and two eagles on the back nine. She was out in 40 and back in 31.
Melissa Reid from the Chevin Club, Derby - winner of the Helen Holm Scottish women's open amateur stroke-play championship at Troon and the St Rule Trophy at St Andrews this year - played exceptionally well to finish in ninth place, a performance which is liable to make up her mind to turn professional at the end of the season rather than wait for another Curtis Cup honour in next summer's match against the Americans over the Old Course, St Andrews.

SCOTS VALERIE AND CAROLINE CHASING LEADER
EMMA IN BRITISH WOMEN'S MID-AMATEUR

Scotland's hopes of providing a third winner in the first six years of the British women's mid-amateur golf championship - to follow in the footsteps of Anne Laing (2002) and Martine Pow last year - rest on the shoulders of exiles Valerie Melvin and Caroline Agnew
Both are former beaten finalists in the Scottish women's amateur championship (1994 and 1998 respectively) and Caroline also won the Scottish Under-18 girls' match-play title in 1993.
Valerie, entered from "Reunion, Florida," has lived and worked in America for a number of years in a golf-related job. Caroline had to go south in the 1990s to get a job and she now plays out of Newmarket Links Golf Club.
In this national tournament for the over-25s - there is a case for making the minimum age 35 - at Frilford Heath Golf Club, Oxfordshire, Valerie has had rounds of 78 and 75 for 153 - to be five shots behind the leader and hot title favourite, former Curtis Cup player Emma Duggleby who would probably still be playing for Great Britain & Ireland teams but for deciding a couple of years ago that she did not want to be picked any more for international teams.
Emma has scored 72 and 76 over the par-73 course for a two-over-par tally of 148.
With one round to go, Miss Duggleby, who works in the admin offices of Malton & Norton Golf Club, leads by hree shots from Minna Kaarnalahti (Finland) and by five from Valerie Melvin who saddled herself with a double bogey 6 at the third after starting with a birdie. She did birdie the 18th for the second day in a row.
Caroline Agnew is back in fifth place on 156 with scores of 77 and 79. But for dropping seven shots to par over the last five holes today - including a quadruple bogey 8 at the 16th - she would be in second place and snapping at the leader's heels.
Fife county player Jo Carthew from Ladybank is on 167 with scores of 82 and 85.
Former Scottish senior champion Pamela Williamson (Ladybank) has had rounds of 83 and 86 for 169.

LAURA MURRAY TIES FOR SECOND PLACE
IN BRITISH UNIVERSITIES CHAMPIONSHIP

Robert Gordon University, Aberdeen student Laura Murray was let down by her putter in the final round as she finished joint runner-up in the British women’s universities stroke-play golf championship at Slaley Hall Golf Club, Hexham in Northumbria today.
Laura and Stirling student Claire-Marie Carlton were joint leaders with Chloe Rogers (Bucks Chilterns University) overnight but Chloe outputted the Scots to win the title with a final round of 80, which included only 30 putts, for a total of 238.
Miss Rogers looked to have ruined her title chance when she ran up a quadruple bogey at the seventh but she did not let her spirits drop and was rewarded with five birdies.
Laura, who had 37 putts, finished with an 81 and tied with Lucinda Davies (Birmingham University) for second place on 239.
Claire-Marie Carlton finished joint fourth with fellow Scot Emma Fairnie (Edinburgh) on 243.
It was another bad day for good scoring - showers, a strong wind and a rain-soaked course with absolutely no run on the fairways.
The next time most of these competitors will meet on a golf course will be the British University Sports Association home internationals in August.

Four share lead in Ladies' English Open

CLARE QUEEN BEATS CUT WITH NOTHING
TO SPARE AFTER TRIPLE BOGEY AT FIRST

Clare Queen survived a triple bogey 8 at the first hole to beat the cut with nothing to spare in the Ladies English Open championship at Chart Hills Golf Club, Kent.
Clare birdied the ninth to turn in 40 and another birdie, at the 15th, was to prove vital in getting the Carrick at Cameron House player into the weekend action.
Miss Queen had rounds of 73 and 79 for 152.
Lynn Kenny (Archerfield) shot 76 and 74 for 150.
But Kathryn Imrie (Monifieth) missed out by one stroke with 75 and 78. Kathryn had a double bogey 6 at the eighth.
Liz McKinnon, the Inverness-based New Zealander, failed by a long way with roundes of 83 and 79 for 162.
At the top of the leaderboard, it promises to be a keenly contested finish to the tournament. Overnight leader, Linda Wessberg (Sweden) crashed down the field, slumping from 66 to 78 and 144.
Two Welsh players are among the quartet contesting the lead on three-under-par 141 - Becky Brewerton and Eleanor Pilgrim. Cecilia Ekelundh (Sweden) and England's Karen Stupples make up the four pacemakers.
Only a shot behind them are two players very capable of swooping to conquer - Gwladys Nocera (France) and England's Laura Davies.

CAROLINE AND VALERIE BACK IN THE PICTURE AT BRITISH MID-AM STROKE

Two Scots golfing exiles, Caroline Agnew and Valerie Melvin, came to the fore again in the first round of the British women's mid-amateur stroke-play championship at Frilford Heath Golf Club, Oxfordshire today.

Agnew, who won the Scottish Under-18 girls' match-play title at Baberton in 1993 and reached the final of the Scottish women's amateur championship at North Berwick in 1998, was in fourth position at the end of the first of three rounds.
Caroline had to go south in pursuit of her employment soon after losing to Elaine Moffat in the 1998 "Scottish" and is now a member at Links Newmarket Golf Club.
She had a four-over-par round of 77 to be five shots behind the leader and title favourite, GB&I Curtis Cup player of yesteryear, Emma Duggleby (Malton & North).
Caroline was three over par after only seven holes, running up a double bogey 7 at the second and dropping another shot at the seventh but she got a birdie 2 at the ninth and a birdie 4 at the long 12th.
She was able to get one more birdie, at the 16th, but surrounded it with bogeys at the 14th, 15th, 17th and 18th in halves of 39 and 38.
Valerie Melvin, pictured above, beaten by Catriona Matthew in the 1994 Scottish women's amateur championship final at Gullane, has spent the last few years working in the United States in a golf-related post.

She is in fifth place with a 78, despite starting with a double bogey 6 and reaching the turn in 41. Birdies at the 12th and 18th got her back in 37 for a respectable opening score.
Fife county player Jocelyn Carthew (Ladybank) had the kind of start to give a golfer nightmares - a 9 at the par-4 opening hole and a double bogey 6 at the fifth hole. She had another double bogey at the par-5 10th on her way to an 82 and a share of 11th place in the relatively small field for the over-25s' championship.
Former Scottish seniors champion Pamela Williamson (Baberton) also had a depressing start with a triple bogey 7 at the first and a double bogey at the short fourth on her way to an outward half of 44. She finished in joint 16th place with an 83.

LAURA MURRAY, CLAIRE-MARIE CARLTON
SHARE UNIVERSITIES' LEAD IN ENGLAND

Two Scots - Robert Gordon University student Laura Murray and Stirling University's Claire-Marie Carlton - share the lead with England's Chloe Rogers (Bucks Chilterns University) with one round to go in the British universities' women's stroke-play championship over sodden course at Slaley Hall Golf Club, Hexham in Northumberland.
Laura from Alford, Aberdeenshire had rounds of 82 and 76 for 158 while Claire-Marie's scores were 81 and 77.

LADIES ENGLISH OPEN

CLARE QUEEN TOP SCOT AT CHART
HILLS WITH ONE-BIRDIE 73

FROM THE LADIES EUROPEAN TOUR WEBSITE
(with additional input about Scots)

Swede Linda Wessberg fired a bogey-free six-under-par 66 to take a one-stroke lead after the first round of the Ladies English Open, in association with Golf Punk, at Chart Hills Golf Club in Kent.
The 27-year-old from Gothenburg carded six birdies, with three on the front nine and three on the back nine, to lead by one over Wales’ Becky Brewerton and defending champion Cecilia Ekelundh of Sweden.
Wessberg, who collected her second LET title at the Vediorbis Open de France Dames a fortnight ago, gave herself a strong chance of becoming the third Swedish winner of the event in the last four years, after Maria Hjorth won back-to-back titles in 2004 and 2005 and then Ekelundh won in 2006.
“I would say I’m playing some of my best golf. I’ve been working hard in the States,” said Wessberg, currently ranked ninth in Europe.
“I went over there straight after Australia so I had a lot of good rounds on great courses and different grasses so hopefully it will pay off.
“I hit a lot of greens and I made a lot of putts as well. I hit 16 greens and I just missed the 16th and 17th but made up and downs on those. I was hitting my irons really well.”
BECKY OPTIMISTIC
Brewerton, 24, carded a 67 and set her sights on bringing home her first LET trophy. “I’ve hit some of the best shots I’ve hit all year,” said Brewerton, currently seventh on the New Star Money List.
“I was on 16 greens and I was always putting for birdie. I had a lot of chances so I was pleased. It could have been better because I didn’t hole many putts, but, saying that, I hit some phenomenal shots.”
Brewerton, whose first round included five birdies and an eagle, went into the English Open in fine form having starred at the Catalonia Ladies’ Masters in June, where she finished as joint runner-up.
“Everyone’s fighting for a place in the Solheim Cup,” she said. “There are quite a few players who are quite well in fourth or fifth place (in the European Solheim Cup team standings). It only takes one good week and you’re right up there again.”
Germany’s Martina Eberl and England’s Lora Fairclough were on four-under 68, while a three-under-par 69 left England’s Laura Davies three shots off the pace. “It was a funny start,” said Davies. “I three-putted the first and then I had a couple of silly bogies on 13 and 14 - which were on my front nine. And then a couple of birdies and three under on the back nine. It was a good comeback really because I was two over early doors.
“I’m playing well; I’m hitting it really good. It should have been better that that really on the back nine. I missed three or four chances in addition to the three I made.
“My season so far has not been bad at all really. I’m 21st on the money list in America so I can’t complain. I’ve played some good golf. I haven’t won an event yet, which is irritating, but I’ve had some chances and I’m very happy with my form.”
STUPPLES' GOOD COMEBACK
England’s Karen Stupples, the 2004 Women’s British Open champion, posted a 71 in what was her first tournament round since having her first son 10 weeks ago. situations and that was just rust.
Clare Queen was the top Scot in a share of 29th place on 73 with a steady card which varied from par only with a birdie at the fourth and boteys at the third and 13th.
Kathryn Imrie is joint 59th on 74 with a disastrous finish of a bogey at the 14th and a double bogey 5 at the short 17th.
Lynn Kenny had an even worse finish in her 76 for joint 74th place. Lynn had a quadruple bogey 8 at the 13th and a double bogey 6 at the 18th in halves of 35 and 41. She did birdie the first, sixth and 16th.
Inverness-based Kiwi Liz McKinnon had no birdies in halves of 39 and 44 for 83.

If you've not been following events on www.kirkwoodgolf.co.uk, you won't know that last week we ran a story about Annika Sorenstam who said at a Press Conference on the eve of the US Women's Open that she was looking forward to playing in the Women's British Open over the Old Course, St Andrews and hoped that a sign she recalled from the last time she was at St Andrews - in the late 1980s for two St Rule Trophy events - "No Dogs or Women Allowed" was no longer visible.
No-one can remember such a sign, certainly not on this side of the Atlantic. One viewer suggested that Annika's memory was playing tricks on her and that the sign had been on display at Elie.
Which has brought the following response:

Message from Ian Muir, Golf Professional, Elie.

'NO DOGS OR WOMEN ALLOWED' SIGN NOT AT ELIE

Just to clarify the situation on your post dated July 2 there is NO sign at Elie stating "No Dogs or Women Allowed."
Could you please post this reponse or remove the offending post. We actually cater for all women from beginners through to international ladies' teams.
Our shop is well known for its ladies' clothing and we specialize in ladies' custom-fit golf equipment.
Many thanks.

LAURA WALKER BEATS EMILY OGILVY IN
TOP-QUALITY NORTH OF SCOTLAND

WOMEN'S CHAMPIONSHIP FINAL

Nairn Dunbar’s Laura Walker won the North of Scotland women’s amateur golf championship after a thrilling final against Emily Ogilvy (Auchterarder) over the Moray Golf Club’s Old Course at Lossiemouth today.
Laura, pictured right, the No 6 qualifier, beat Emily, the fourth seed, with a birdie at the 20th hole of quality match. Both players covered the first 18 holes in an approximate two-under-par 74.
All square at the turn, after Emily had cancelled out Laura’s early two-hole lead , Laura regained the lead with an eagle 2 at the 10th only for Emily to level matters again with a birdie 4 at the 11th.
Miss Ogilvy took the lead for the first time with a par at the 12th but was pulled back to square again by Laura’s birdie 3 at the next.
Emily bogeyed the 16th to go one down again but squared the match with a birdie 4 at the 17th. The 18th and the 19th were halved in par 4s before Laura won the 20th and the title with a birdie 4.
Later Laura revealed that she was playing with a putter borrowed from ... EMILY OGILVY!
"I had been putting like a donkey all season and borrowed her spare putter before the North of Scotland championship - and then holed everything," explained Laura.
It must rank as Miss Walker's best win since she beat Gemma Webster in the final of the Scottish girls five years ago. Miss Ogilvy reached the final of the Scottish women's championship at Barassie in May and is now considered an international class player.
Laura, who spent some years at the University of Arkansas-Little Rock at the same time as Emily Ogilvy, has recently completed her training as a teacher and will start work at a school in Dumfrieshire after the summer holidays.
In the morning semi-finals, Miss Ogilvy beat the No 1 qualifier, Kerri Harper (Inverness) at the 21st while Laura was a 4 and 2 winner over Perth & Kinross county champion Alexandra Bushby (Strathmore).
In the all-Aberdeenshire handicap championship final, Lynne Terry (Cruden Bay), playing off five of a handicap, beat six-handicapper Ann Smart (Banchory) by one hole.

COLIN BROOKS' COACHING HAS RAISED
RACHAEL LIVINGSTONE TO
INTERNATIONAL CLASS

THIS ARTICLE WAS FIRST PUBLISHED IN THE EDINBURGH EVENING NEWS

By MARTIN DEMPSTER
The likes of Carly Booth, Krystle Caithness and Roseanne Niven may have grabbed most of the headlines as girl power has made its mark on the Scottish golf scene over the past year or so. But a young member of one of the less fashionable clubs in Edinburgh has also been climbing up the ladder - and next week, over in Italy, she's set to carve out a slice of golfing history.
Rachael Livingstone, pictured left, has been a member at Musselburgh Old since 2000, having been tempted to take up the game when she saw the historic club at the town's racecourse was keen to attract more juniors.
Seven years on, she's playing off scratch and, in the eyes of the Scottish selectors at least, is now among the top female amateurs in the 'Home of Golf'.
That's because they've just selected the 19-year-old in the six-strong side to represent Scotland in the European women's team championship, to be held at the Castelconturbia Golf Club next week.
"When I heard that I was in the team, it really did come out of the blue," admitted Livingstone. "I'll be Musselburgh Old's first full internationalist and I'm really excited about that."
Indeed, while she also plays at Monktonhall, Livingstone is extremely proud of her golfing roots. "I joined Monktonhall about three or four years ago because it's a tougher test and also had better practice facilities," she added.
"But Musselburgh Old is my home club - my handicap is there - and I don't see any reason why I should be thinking about changing that."
One change she did make four years ago, however, was to start working with Colin Brooks, the highly-respected coach who is based at the Braid Hills Golf Centre. And, just like Lloyd Saltman and several others, she's seen her game come on leaps and bounds thanks to his sound advice.
"Colin has made a big difference to my game," said Livingstone, who, after taking a year out to concentrate solely on playing golf, is set to start a two-year sports coaching course at Telford College later this year.
HARD WORK OVER WINTER
"He's worked hard on improving my swing and, after putting in a lot of hard work over the winter, all I've needed lately has been a few tweaks here and there.
"We're both happy with the way things have been going and I feel I am playing quite well going into the European team championship."
Rachael has already tasted team success with Scotland, having been in the side that won the girls' home internationals last year.
And, with Jenna Wilson and Heather MacRae spearheading the team that will head out to Italy this weekend, she admitted: "We've got a really strong side and, hopefully, we'll be able to make our presence felt."
SALLY OFF TO NORWAY
At the same time as the women's event is taking place in Italy, two other rising Lothians stars will also be hoping to taste European team glory elsewhere.
Sally Watson, a member of Murrayfield, is off to Norway for the girls' event, while The Glen's Neil Henderson has just been selected for the boys' equivalent in Denmark.

Continuing our viewers' involvement in Annika Sorenstam's recollection from 1988 and 1989, when she played in the St Rule Trophy at St Andrews, that there was a sign "No Dogs or Women Allowed" somewhere in the region of the R&A clubhouse.
Scroll down to see what Annika actually said at the US Women's Open Press Conference last week and the suggestion by one of our viewers yesterday that Miss Sorenstam was wrong - the notice is/was at Elie Golf Club.
Now for the latest response:

From Joanne Watt:

While grabbing a quick bite of lunch decided to browse through Gillian Kirkwood’s website. Nothing to add except that I agree with Claire – as far as I remember, that notice is (or is it now in the past?) at Elie because there was a nice little bit of garden fenced off in front of the gents' lounge window.
The notice has always been a cause of hilarity amongst us women. I have certainly never seen that sign at St Andrews and have played the Old Course several times – no problem playing on the course, it’s just getting into the R&A clubhouse that’s a forbidden area! I really think Annika’s memory is not so hot as her golf.
Great website – must look at it more often.

WELL, WAS THAT 'NO DOGS OR WOMEN ALLOWED'
SIGN AT ELIE, NOT ST ANDREWS?

Scroll down and you'll read Annika Sorenstam's reference last week at a US Women's Open Press Conference to what she remembers was a sign at the R&A clubhouse, "No Dogs or Women Allowed."
We invited any reader who could vouch for the fact that such a sign ever existed - Annika played in the St Rule Trophy as an amateur at St Andrews in 1988 and 1989.
This is our first response:

"As far as I’m aware the ‘No Dogs or Women Allowed' sign was at Elie Golf Club – and not St Andrews." -- Claire

Editor's Note: If the sign had been at Elie, then Annika Sorenstam would not have seen it ... if she did see it.

KERRI DANCING AFTER LEADING NORTH
OF SCOTLAND MATCH-PLAY QUALIFIERS

Last year’s beaten finalist Kerri Harper from Inverness shot a great six-under-par round of 70 to lead by four strokes the 16 qualifiers for the match-play stages of the North of Scotland women’s amateur championship at Lossiemouth today.
It’s been a good season for Kerri (pictured right) – Scottish universities women’s champion over the same course in the spring before capturing the club championships at Inverness and Nairn golf clubs.
To win the North of Scotland title for the first time and perhaps avenge last year’s 4 and 3 defeat by Michele Thomson (McDonald Ellon) in the final at Montrose Links is well within Miss Harper’s scope, judging by her qualifying round form.
She birdied the third, seventh, eighth, 10th, 12th 14th and 16th with only one bogey, at the fourth in halves of 36 (two under par) and 34 (four under par) for the Moray club’s Old Course.
A repeat Harper v Thomson final is a possibility because Michele, title-winner for the past two years, earned the No 2 seeding, which puts her in the opposite half of the match-play draw. Her two-under 74 included a triple bogey 7 at the 12th where she required two shots to get out of a greenside bunker.
Michele, who now has +1 of a handicap, had six birdies in halves of 35 and 39.
Match-play golf, of course, has a habit of not quite working out the way it should on paper and there are some other qualifiers capable of upsetting the form book.
Three of them were on the 75 mark on a thundery day when only the early starters got round dry – Emma Ogilvy (Muckhart), who reached the final of the Scottish women’s amateur championship at Barassie in May, Laura Murray (Alford), joint runner-up in the Scottish Under-21 girls championship at Auchterarder last Friday, and Aberdeenshire county team-mate Carol Wilson (Murcar Links) who birdied four of the first eight holes.

MICHELE WIE QUITS AGAIN IN MID-ROUND
BECAUSE OF SORE LEFT WRIST

Michele Wie withdrew from the US Women's Open halfway through her second round on Saturday when she was on her way to another score in the 80s.
She was six over par after nine holes when she quit after hitting her second shot on the par-5 first hole. She told her playing partners "I'm done."
The 17-year-old from Hawaii was 17 over par for the tournament when she walked in. It was the second time in three tournaments she has withdrawn when her round was still in progress.
For the year, she has completed seven rounds with an average score of just under 78.
"As of right now, I don't know what I am going to do next," Wie, wearing an ice bag on her left wrist, told a Press Conference.
"I'm definitely going to think about all the options. I want to lay off again, but we'll have to see.''
It was another setback for the teenager who turned pro in October 2005 and earns close to $20 million a year in endorsements.
Only a year ago, she had a share of the lead on the back nine of all three U.S. majors on the LPGA Tour, and made headlines around the world by coming close to qualifying for the men's U.S. Open at Winged Foot.
Wie played without a brace on her wrist at Pine Needles, but said her wrist was sore when she woke up Saturday to start her second round in the storm-delayed tournament. She said it flared up on a tee shot at No. 17, her eighth hole.
``And then after that, it kind of went downhill,'' she said. ``I don't remember hurting this much.''
Wie's next tournament is supposed to be the Evian Masters in France that starts July 25, but even that must be in considerable doubt.
``I definitely have to re-evaluate because I obviously don't want this to happen again,'' Wie said.
Wie finished second at the Evian Masters last year, closing with a 68.
She has not broken par since then.

CATRIONA LYING JOINT 20th AS US WOMEN'S
OPEN THIRD ROUND STILL TO BE FINISHED

The United States Women's Open continues into its fourth day - and what should be final day - on Sunday with no third-round totals completed.
The field of halfway qualifiers (149 scores or better) were still out on the course at 8.15pm local time playing their third rounds when darkness forced the LPGA officials to halt play for the day.
Catriona Matthew is lying joint 20th overall at three over par (for the tournament) after 11 holes in her third round. She had a second-round 67 to qualify on 152.
Janice Moodie is six over par for the tournament after 12 holes, having qualified with 71 and 76 for 147.
Michele Wie, who had a first-round 82, withdrew before the start of the second.
Karrie Webb, who had an 83, did go out and, good for her, returning a 71 for 154 - well over the cut figure of 149 but at least she showed herself she could play the course in a decent score.

Here is how the scoreboard looks at the start of play today (Sunday) at Pine Needs Lodge and Golf Club, Southern Pines in North Carolina.

Jiyai Shin (70 69) -5 for the tournament after 10 holes of round three.
Cristie Kerr (71 72) -4 after 13.
