Jennifer on Song to win US Public Links title

FROM THE GOLFWEEK WEBSITE
A month after being named Golfweek’s US College Player of the Year, Jennifer Song added a major amateur title to her resume. The rising USC sophomore won the U.S. Women’s Amateur Public Links today in a convincing 7-and-6 victory over Kimberly Kim in the 36-hole final.
It was the largest margin of victory in the 33-year history of the event.
Song, who was five up after 18 holes at Red Tail Golf Club in Devens, Mass., increased her lead to seven holes after 27.
In total, she was nine-under par for the holes played and made just one bogey in the championship match.
“I think it was my best round of golf,” said Song, who hit 25 of 30 greens and didn’t miss a fairway. “Whenever I was on the green, I just told myself, ‘If you can see it, it’s going to go in.’ ”
Born in Ann Arbor, Michigan, Song, 18, grew up in South Korea and was a member of the 2007 and 2008 Korean National Team. She was named Golfweek’s 2008-09 Player of the Year after finishing No. 1 in the Golfweek/Sagarin College Rankings.
Kim has had plenty of experience in USGA events. In 2006, she became the youngest winner in US Women’s Amateur history when she triumphed as a 14-year-old. Earlier that year, she was runner-up at the Women’s Publinx.
Now 17, Kim won the AJGA’s Rolex Girls Junior Championship June 19. She will attend Denver University in the fall.

Krystle Caithness in the Irish Ladies Open picture

It looks like a Luna

landscape for Diana

as she leads into

Portmarnock last day

FROM THE LADIES' EUROPEAN TOUR WEBSITE
Italian Diana Luna came a step closer to earning her second Ladies European Tour victory today, taking a one-shot lead into Sunday's final round of the AIB Ladies Irish Open, supported by Failte Ireland.
Luna carded four birdies and one bogey for a three-under-par 69 at Portmarnock Hotel and Links, near Dublin.
Her seven-under total took her one clear of Sweden’s Sophie Gustafson and Melissa Reid from England. First round co-leader Julie Greciet from France remained on five-under, one shot back, along with Florentyna Parker, a German-born English rookie, sharing fourth.
Luna, the 2004 Tenerife Ladies Open champion, said: “I stayed very calm and patient today, all the way round. I mean, this is a course that needs to accept every single shot-because, of course, links courses get some bounces.”
With a chance to win for the first time in five years, she was keen to improve on her second place finish the ABN AMRO Ladies Open in the Netherlands three weeks ago, when she lost out by a stroke to Tania Elosegui from Spain.
“I’m playing very good and I just want to keep going and enjoy myself. It’s wonderful weather and we’re so lucky to be here on this wonderful course,” she said.
Reid, who is third on the LET’s Henderson Money List after three top three finishes in four starts this season, hopes to secure her maiden professional victory.
She has finished second four times already since turning professional at the beginning of last year and said: “I don’t want to finish second again so we’ll need to shoot low tomorrow.”
Gustafson, a three-time Irish Open winner, having won the event in 1998 at Ballyliffin, in 2000 at Faithlegg and at Killarney Golf and Fishing Club, otherwise known as Mahoney’s Point, in 2003, has a strong track record on Irish soil. She also won the 2000 World Cup at Adare Manor along with Carin Koch. In Northern Ireland, she won the BT Irish Open in 2003.
The 22-time tournament winner carded a sensational 67 today, her seven birdies only countered by a double bogey at the ninth hole.
She said she enjoys Ireland. “The people and the atmosphere are so great. We always play great courses; links is my favourite,” she said.
Parker continued her form from the Portugal Ladies Open a fortnight ago, when she posted a career best finish of equal fifth, but was disappointed to have four-putted for a double bogey at the eighth.
Scottish rookie Krystle Caithness (pictured above), Welsh Solheim Cup star Becky Brewerton and last year’s number one Gwladys Nocera from France shared sixth on four-under, with Spain’s Paula Marti and last year’s runner-up Marianne Skarpnord of Norway a shot further back in a tie for ninth place.
Five Irish players made the cut, with amateur Danielle McVeigh leading the way in joint 19th on level par. The Royal County Down player watched as her Vagliano Trophy GB&I team-mate Jodi Ewart from Yorkshire holed-in-one with a six-iron at the 158yd third hole, before sinking her own ace. It was the third hole-in-one at the same hole in two days.
However GB&I team-mates 14-year-old twins Leona and Lisa Maguire, hugely popular in Ireland, missed the cut. They both shot the same score in the second round: six-over 78.
But their day will come on the professional circuit. Nothing is surer than that.

Midlothian could be even money

chance to win East Div title

FROM THE EDINBURGH EVENING NEWS WEBSITE
By MARTIN DEMPSTER
Midlothian will be hoping a recent pattern continues in the three-day East Division women's inter-county team championship, which get underway at Falkirk Carmuirs on Monday.
They've won the event in the odd years since 2005, with Fife having taken the title in the even years. On both occasions, Midlothian also went on to claim the Scottish crown.
Six members of the side from four years ago will be in action again next week, namely Kirsten Blackwood (Craigmillar Park), pictured by Cal Carson Golf Agency, Claire Hargan (Mortonhall), Claire MacDonald (Gullane Ladies), Karen Marshall (Baberton), Wendy Nicholson (Broomieknowe) and Jane Turner (Craigielaw).
Hargan, MacDonald, Marshall, Nicholson and Turner were also in the team two years ago and with them this time around are Louise Fraser (Kingsknowe) and Rachael Watton (Mortonhall).
County champion Hargan and Turner will be the mainstays of the team, the latter having boosted her hopes of a call-up for this season's home internationals at Irvine in September with a third-place finish in last weekend's Irish open stroke-play championship.
Midlothian tee off against East Lothian, with Fife facing Stirling & Clackmannan in the other tie.

US DURAMED FUTURES TOUR REPORT

Rookie Mina Harigae breaks Lost Marsh

record with seven-under-par 65

NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY THE DURAMED FUTURES TOUR
Rookie Mina Harigae of Monterey, California, fired a seven-under-par 65 during the first round of the $100,000 Horseshoe Casino Classic at Lost Marsh Golf Course, setting a new women’s course record at the Indiana venue
Harigae, who started on the back nine, carded a bogey-free round with five birdies coming in early in her day.
"The five birdies on my first nine really gave me confidence for the rest of the day," recalled Harigae, who also carded two birdies on the front nine, which was her second nine holes today. "I had a long putt [30 feet] for birdie on 14, which I hit off the green. It was really a gift."
Harigae is already a two-time winner on the Duramed Futures Tour this year, winning back-to-back the Ladies Titan Tire Challenge in Marion, Iowa, and the Michelob Uultra Duramed Futures Players Championship in Decatur, Illinois.
After finishing last week's Duramed Championship in Mason, Ohio, tied for 20th, Harigae took some time to rest before heading to Indiana.
"I feel rejuvenated and really had the energy to practise this week," said Harigae. "Having won two in a row, it has taught me to just relax and play my game. I have a new attitude in that I now take this as more of a job. I just want to go low and play the best that I can."
Sharing a three-way tie for second at three strokes back on 68 are Christina Jones of Jensen Beach, Florida, Sara Brown of Tucson, Arizona, and Seo-Jae Lee from Seoul, South Korea. All three carded six birdies and two bogeys during their rounds.
Fellow rookie Jones said she woke up feeling as if this would be her day. "I just felt good," said Jones, who recorded 16 top-10 finishes, including three wins, while at the University of South Florida. "I can't explain it because I've felt that way before and I haven't shot 68. Things were just going my way."
Jones scored her first birdie of the day on the third hole.
"I hit a 3-wood to 12 feet, and I just thought, 'sweet'," recalls Jones. "I was glad to be starting off so good, because I had been struggling at past tournaments."
Brown credits two men today for her low round -- her dad and Lost Marsh head pro Don Plohg.
"I asked my dad to caddie for me today about one minute before my round started, because I knew I could talk to him and he did help me a lot today," said Brown, who recorded four wins in collegiate competition while at Michigan State University.
"I was paired with Don during the pro-am earlier this week. I have to give him credit because he really helped me with my putting."
Brown needed only 23 putts for the day, and hit 10 greens and 11 fairways in regulation.
Lee, who also had her dad on her bag, was relieved to record five birdies on the back nine.
"I had a really bad start today, and I was 1-over at the turn," said Lee, who is a former member of the LPGA tour. "I liked the back nine better, as I had a better short game."

Janice Moodie misses cut in LPGA Tour event

Jiyai Shin jumps into three-shot

lead at weather-hit Wegmans

Women's British Open champion Jiyai Shin from South Korea, seeking her fifth win in 11 months, shot a four-under-par second-round 68 to lead by one shot from Morgan Pressel at the end of a weather-delayed Wegmans LPGA at Rochester, New York State.
“I really am happy with my putter — it’s really good,” the 21-year-old Shin said after moving to 11-under 133, a record low at the demanding Locust Hill course in suburban Rochester.
“I would like to keep this feeling through tomorrow and the final round.”
Play was interrupted by thunderstorms for nearly five hours, then called off at 8:37 p.m. Friday night local time as darkness fell.
In all, 71 players completed their second rounds early Saturday morning, including Tiger Woods’ niece, Cheyenne, who failed to make th cut.
First-round leader Sandra Gal of Germany, blaming tiredness for a string of wayward tee shots on the back nine, shot a 1-over 73 to drop to 7 under.
Last year, Shin became the first non-LPGA member to win three events. She reeled in the Women’s British Open last August, then followed with late-season wins in the Mizuno Classic and ADT Championship.
In March, she captured the HSBC Women’s Champions in Singapore for her first victory as a tour member.
Her dead-eye accuracy off the tee box and the fairways got her within 3 feet for early birdies on Nos. 3 and 4. Her only bogey came when she caught a greenside bunker at No. 10. As Gal faltered, the South Korea star took the lead with an 8-foot birdie putt on No. 14 and widened the gap atop the leaderboard when she birdied from 6 feet at the par-5 17th.
How's this for dedication to improvement? On Tuesday afternoon this past week, Shin spent nearly five hours practicing her putting at Locust Hill, a traditional, tree-lined course with compact, undulating greens.
“So it was easy play with my putter,” she said with a shy smile.
Gal, 24, who grew up near Cologne, was a two-time all-American in her three seasons at the University of Florida and the top-ranked European amateur in 2007. In her second year on tour, her best finish was a tie for fifth at last month’s LPGA Corning Classic.
“I’m in the hunt for the weekend, so I can’t complain,” she said. “I just accept it as it is and move forward.”
From the 12th hole onward, “I started hitting a few drives crooked, maybe it was tiredness,” she said. After knocking in a 15-foot birdie putt on No. 11, she got caught in heavy rough for bogeys on Nos. 12 and 14 and double-bogeyed No. 16, when she fluffed a chip, landed in a bunker and then missed a 7-foot putt.
Morgan Pressel was one of the early-morning brigade but it seemed to inspire her. She shot a 66 for 134 to be only one shot off the pace. And Stacy Lewis, who only last year was playing for the United States in the Curtis Cup at St Andrews, also completed a good early-morning round, a 67, to be lying third on 135.
Woods, making her first start on the professional tour by way of a sponsor exemption, was at one over par through 10 holes. But the 18-year-old couldn't hold it together over the closing holes and had a 74 for 149 - four shots too many to survive the cut.
Defending champion Eun-Hee Ji was toiling at six over par after 13 holes and eventually missed the cut by five shots with a 36-hole tally of 150.
Scot Janice Moodie missed the cut by two shots with scores 74 and 73 for 147.
The $2 million tournament drew 18 of the season’s top 20 money winners, including No. 1 Cristie Kerr, who was at 1 under through 12 holes. Absent is Lorena Ochoa, the world’s top-ranked player, and Suzann Pettersen, the runner-up here last June.

AIB LADIES IRISH OPEN at Portmarnock Links

Leona Maguire impresses playing

partner Laura Davies - and has a

better score!

FROM THE IRISHTIMES.COM WEBSITE
JOHN O'SULLIVAN at Portmarnock Links
Leona Maguire willed a downhill, sliding eight-foot par putt on the home green into the hole, the ball grabbing the right edge before eventually disappearing.
The 14-year-old, pictured right by Cal Carson Golf Agency, celebrated with a tiny fist pump, arguably her only animated gesture in the four-and-three-quarter hours it took to complete her first round in the AIB Ladies Irish Open at Portmarnock Links.
Signing for a two-over-par 74 represents a bald statistic that fails to capture the colour of the morning’s fare. From the moment the teenage Irish amateur strode to the first tee box to officially greet women’s golfing icon Laura Davies and the third member of the group, France’s Jade Schaeffer, she demonstrated remarkable self-possession for one so young.
There must have been a temptation to deviate from a deliberate pre-shot routine that demanded two practice swings on the tee and occasionally three from the fairway, especially when her playing companions struck the ball with no preamble, but it never wavered.
Cocooned by a singular focus, she appeared impervious to her surroundings, much to her credit.
She represented a poster girl for the virtues of hitting fairways and greens in regulation, the only aberration on the front nine an under-hit wedge to the par five fourth, that led to a bogey. A birdie on the sixth, where she played a glorious, 45-yard pitch-and-run to four feet saw her return to level par, a status she retained to the turn.
A bogey and a birdie in the first three holes of her back nine kept a gallery that seemed to increase by the minute enthralled. She demonstrated her mettle on the 13th by holing superbly from 12 feet for a double bogey seven, and although she dropped another shot to par on the 15th, an eight-foot birdie putt on the 161-yard 17th underlined her prowess with the putter.
Her 74 – twin sister Lisa shot 76 playing in the afternoon – equalled that of Schaeffer and was one better than Davies who, short game aside, struggled for accuracy.
Leona Maguire admitted: “I am pretty happy. It’s a great experience playing against a world-class golfer like Laura. Hopefully, I have learned a few things from today. I just really enjoyed myself.”
Any first-tee nerves?
“Well I played the pro event up in Templepatrick two years ago and kind of knew what it was going to be like. Yeah, I was a bit nervous. I got my tee-shot away fine so I was pretty happy.
“I kept the ball on the fairway a lot and she (Davies) was in the rough a lot, but her short game saved her and she got up and down a lot of the time: hopefully I can get my short game like that and maybe some day be good like her.”
Davies reciprocated the admiration.
“You can’t not be (impressed). She’s fabulous, hits it fairly straight and pretty long too. She will get longer and longer, and (hits) good irons. Her putting looks really solid and I can’t say much more really.”
Leona lies in 50th place with the top-60 players and ties after today’s second round playing a final 18 holes tomorrow.
Frenchwoman Julie Greciet and Sweden’s Maria Hjorth lead the field after posting five-under-par 67s by one shot from a sextet of pursuers and are two clear of another cluster of players that includes Ireland’s Martina Gillen.
A mammoth, 45-foot putt on the 17th green was the highlight of a round that included five birdies and just two dropped shots. She smiled when asked if she could go on to win the tournament.
“I don’t know,” Gillen said. “I’m just looking for another good, solid round and then take my chances on Sunday. I would not be thinking of winning at this stage, just getting three solid rounds in. I’m looking for consistency.
“You can be two or three under here and it can be gone in the blink of an eye. You have to be patient.”
Carlow’s Tara Delaney also climbed to three under at one point but had to settle for a fine two-under-the-card 70.
Leona Maguire is joined on two over by fellow amateur and Vagliano team member Danielle McVeigh, one shot clear of Rebecca Coakley, Hazel Kavanagh and Marian Riordan. Lisa Maguire shot 76, while Clare Coughlan Ryan and US-based amateur Stephanie Meadow were one shot further adrift on a benign day at the Portmarnock Links.

Leader Sandra Gall plays chess during

rain delay in LPGA Tour event

What do LPGA players do during a rain delay? Comb their hair? Powder their noses? None of that if your name is Sandra Gal.
The Germany hunge loose over a game of chess and resumed later to shoot an -under 64 to lead Jiyai Shin by one stroke before darkness suspended first-round play at the Wegmans LPGA at Rochester, New York State on Thursday.
An afternoon storm packing hail, lightning and torrential rain interrupted the tournament for three hours at the tree-lined Locust Hill Country Club course in suburban Rochester. Poor light then ended play with 30 players unable to finish their round.
Becky Lucidi was in third place at six under through 15 holes. Kristy McPherson and Michele Redman were tied for fourth place with 5-under 67s.
Tiger Woods' 18-year-old niece, Cheyenne, carded a 75 in her pro tour debut, which came courtesy of a sponsor exemption.
The 24-year-old Gal, in her second year on tour, finished with a 15-foot birdie putt for a career-best round. Her best finish was a tie for fifth at last month's Corning Classic.
"This year I think I'm improving every month and, yeah, it's just a way up there," Gal said. "Sometimes it doesn't go quick and you got to take one step at a time."
Starting on the back nine, Gal ran up five consecutive birdies before play was suspended. She said she joked with her caddie, then played chess with her father, Jan.
"We're not done yet," she said. "I had a few checks there from him but I got out of it."
When play restarted, she two-putted for another birdie on No. 17 and sank an 8-foot birdie putt on No. 1.
"At first I thought, it's a pity we're stopping. But then I said, come on, it's just a new start, a fresh round, and see how low we can go."
"I just got something to eat and talked to a few people," said Shin, who picked up four birdies on her back nine. "I just felt really confident because my putter was very good today."
Shin picked up her first LPGA victory at the HSBC Women's Champions event in Singapore in early March and was runner-up behind Karrie Webb in the J Golf LPGA International three weeks later.
Tied for sixth at 68 were Diana D'Alessio, Morgan Pressel, Brandi Jackson, Haeji Kang and Stacy Lewis, who three-putted from 7 feet on No. 18.
Michelle Wiewas among a dozen players at 3-under.
Defending champion Ji Eun-hee bogeyed nine of the first 14 holes and carded an 8-over 80.
Lewis reached 6-under with birdies on Nos. 16 and 17, then missed a tap-in for bogey on the last hole.
"To throw one away like that, it makes me pretty mad," she said.
Woods finished with a bogey but was still confident about making amends on Friday.
"I gotta prove myself out here," she said with a smile strikingly similar to her famous uncle's. "So tomorrow I'll have to come back out and do a little better. My goal is to make the cut."
The $2 million tournament drew 18 of the season's top 20 money winners, including No. 1 Cristie Kerr, who shot 75. Absent is Lorena Ochoa, the world's top-ranked player, and Suzann Pettersen, who was runner-up here last June.

From Graeme Thomson,
father of LET player Michele Thomson

I see an article in the P&J online suggesting Michele is playing in Ireland this weekend. I, along with Michele, wish it were true. Because of the high number of amateur invites, 11 I believe, Michele dropped to 3rd reserve.
Seems the sponsors are calling the shots over there rather than the LET.
Disappointing because Michele moved up 12 places in the rankings after her fine start which means she should play all the tournaments from here on in.
The tournament in Ireland is very popular and anyone who is anyone has entered, obviously because the prize money is good.
Michele's next start is Norway next week and then on to Spain.
Isn't it ironic, Westerberg wins the last LET event and Nordqvist wins an LPGA major, yet the LET have confirmed that they have lost this year,s Swedish event because of a lack of sponsors. Shows we are still very much in a recession.

Renfrewshire beat Dunbartonshire & Argyll 6 1/2-2 1/2 in the decisive match between the two teams with 100 per cent records going into the final day of the West Division women's inter-county team golf championship at Strathaven Golf Club today.
That meant Renfrewshire topped the table for the second year in a row and will go to Baberton Golf Club, Edinburgh in September (19-21) as West's representatives in the four-cornered contest for the Scottish women's county championship.
Ayrshire came back from losing the foursomes 2-1 to beat Lanarkshire 5-4 in the battle between the teams who had lost both their first two matches.
Renfrewshire had the player of the tournament in Scottish champion Megan Briggs (Kilmacolm), pictured above, winner of all six foursomes and singles ties she played. In the final set of singles, Megan beat former Curtis Cup player and past champion Anne Laing (Vale of Leven) by 2 and 1. It was Anne's first singles defeat of the tournament.

Jill Meldrum (Dullatur) top scored for runners-up Dunbartonshire with 4 1/2pt.

Euro Junior Cup at three Fife courses,

Charleton, Crail, Ladybank July 29-31

Perhaps the most notable international event the International Junior Golf Tour competes in each year is the Euro Junior Golf Cup, formerly known as the World Junior Golf Cup.
Players will travel to Fife and compete on three challenging links and parkland style courses, ultimately providing the opportunity to make some history of their own at the home of golf. Developed in 1998, juniors from three countries - the IJGT's Team USA, Canadian Junior Golf Association's Team Canada, and the Fife Golf Union's Team Scotland - play in a Triangular Cup match-play format for the John Clark Trophy
The competition courses are:
Charleton Golf Club. Set in stunning parkland with spectacular panoramic views over the Firth of Forth, is acclaimed to be the most attractive golf course in Fife. Proving to be a challenge to ones short game Charleton is most known for its difficult greens.
Crail Golf Club (Craighead Links). One of the world's oldest golf clubs, Crail Golfing Society was founded in February 1786 and initially comprised membership of 11 local golfers. Craighead Links has panoramic seascape and stunning country views. Crail poses a testing but fair challenge, however be warned - there are hungry bunkers aplenty. No two consecutive holes face the same direction and with constantly changing conditions, there is enough of a variety of shots to test any golfer’s ability.
Ladybank Golf Club. A course of championship status (Par 71) set among heather, pine trees and silver birch. The course definition may have changed dramatically in the intervening one hundred years but its character remains intact. If you stray off line expect to be punished for your sins. Ladybank is also well acclaimed due to their involvement with many prestigious events.
The event will run from July 29 to 31.

Angus Cappi makes it

five in a row for

Kirriemuir coach

Karyn Dallas

Angus Cappi’s win in the Golf Data Lab Scottish youths championship at the weekend meant that for five straight years a player coached by Kirriemuir Golf Club professional Karyn Dallas, pictured above, had won either a Scottish or British championship.
In the early days as a female coach Karyn was often frustrated at the lack of male players coming for coaching but over the past two years things have changed and the victory by Carnoustie Golf Club member Cappi hid the fact that another Dallas-coached player, William Bremner from Edzell, finished two shots behind in third position.
The girls on Dallas’s programme are showing what can be achieved with two earning tour cards and in the recent fifth place for Pamela Feggans in the Ladies Portuguese Open.
Dallas now has four boys and four girls on her elite programme and is expecting three to head for tour school this year.

Dallas, one of the few coaches ever to graduate from the PGA with an “A” for swing knowledge, was frustrated by criticism early in her career for being too simplistic and not placing enough emphasis on swing development.
Karyn always refuted this, pointing out that some of the best players in the world have unusual swings and that a coach had to be able to adapt to the players and not the other way around if the players were to maximise their potential.
Who can disagree? Her achievements speak for themselves but Karyn is keen to point out that there is much still to be done.
For more information on Karyn Dallas’s work you can visit her website http://www.tg54.com/

Lorena Ochoa looking to recover form

with new caddie

It's been a few weeks since Lorena Ochoa, the world's No 1 female golfer, won a tournament so what does she do about it?
Change her caddie, of course! Isn't he the guy who gives her the clubs and she's the one who actually uses them?
The 26-time LPGA Tour winner is switching to veteran Greg Johnston starting next week at the Jamie Farr Classic in Ohio.
Ochoa won two majors and reached No. 1 in the world with Englishman David Brooker as her bag man, but she said yesterday that they are parting because of a new phase in her career.
She did not elaborate on what would be happening in the "new phase."
"It's not easy to let him go knowing he is such a great caddie and person," Ochoa said.
Johnston spent a dozen years working for Juli Inkster, and together they won 20 times, inclduing four majors. He left Inkster to work for Michelle Wie when she was 15 and had at least a share of the lead on the back nine of three majors. He also has worked for Britanny Lincicome, Suzanne Pettersen and Angel Park.

BETH BALDY WRITES ON THE GOLFWEEK WEBSITE:
Lorena Ochoa has fired David Brooker, her caddie of nearly three years.
Brooker fractured his ankle during an organised soccer match at the Corona Championship in April and tried to make a comeback two weeks ago at the McDonald’s LPGA Championship. He carried the bag for one round before enlisting the help of long-time caddie Greg Johnston to finish the week.
Ochoa now has hired Johnston full-time.
“It came as a shock to me because I haven’t really been working lately,” said Brooker, who hoped to make his return in July at the Evian Masters. “Things seemed fine before my injury. Obviously that didn’t help the situation.”
Ochoa won twice with Brooker on the bag this season, first in Thailand and then in Mexico, although her instructor, Rafael Alarcon, worked the final round of the Corona after Brooker’s injury.
Brooker, 35, of England, began working with Ochoa in August 2006, and they won their first week together at the Wendy’s Championship for Children. Ochoa won 21 of 58 events with Brooker on the bag.
“I know Lorena is going through a lot of changes right now,” Brooker said. “But I didn’t think one would be me.”

Grammar School beat Cults Academy

to win Aberdeen Schools League

By DEREK JOHNSTONE
Aberdeen Grammar School claimed the Aberdeen Schools’ League Trophy after a narrow 2-1 win over Cults Academy at a mist-shrouded Hazlehead No 1 course last night.
It was the experienced Grammar School team’s third win in five years, having previously won the trophy in 2005 and 2007. Nick Macandrew, in captaining his team to victory, became the first player in the history of the competition to gain three winners’ medals.
Nick, partnered by William Rennie, set the foundation to the victory with a two-hole victory over Evan Robertson and Calum Sutherland. In a tight affair the Grammar pair found themselves one down after six holes, but birdies at 9 and 11 put them in the ascendancy.
The Cults pairing drew level at the 15th, where both Grammar players lost a ball in the trees, but immediately fell behind at the next to Nick’s tap-in birdie. The 17th was halved in birdies before a conceded par at the last gave the Grammar duo a two-hole win.
An overall Grammar victory was assured when their third pairing of Cameron Johnstone and Ashley Anderson proved too strong for Ross Yule and Vicki Powell. The Cults pairing got off to a flyer by winning the first with a par. However their joy was short-lived as the Grammar pairing fought back to be two up after eight holes. Birdies at 9 and 10 extended their lead, and, with pars at the remaining holes, they closed out the match on the 15th.
The final tie proved to be a tense affair before the Cults pairing of Rachel Polson and Jamie Pryde scraped through by one hole against Lewis Kinnear and Andrew Burr. Never behind in the tie and two up after six holes, Rachel and Jamie could not shake off their dogged opponents. The Grammar pairing levelled the tie with pars at 14 and 15 before Jamie holed from 10 feet for birdie on the next. Pars at the last 2 holes secured a hard-fought victory.

Heather MacRae proud of place

among men at Scottish PGA

FROM THE SCOTSMAN.SPORT.COM WEBSITE
By Mike Aitken
Unlike high profile examples in America of women competing in men's events by invitation – Michelle Wie, Annika Sorenstam and so forth – perhaps the most significant aspect of Heather MacRae's participation in the Scottish PGA championship at Gleneagles this week is that she qualified for the Tartan Tour's flagship event on merit.
MacRae, 25, an assistant professional at Gullane, earned her spot at the PGA Centenary thanks to a two over par round of 75, the same mark as Gordon Sherry, in qualifying at Downfield in Dundee.
It was good enough to finish 11th and secure one of the Perthshire venue berths. The first woman since 1933 to tee up in the Scottish PGA – Meg Farquhar was the last Scot to take on her male counterparts 76 years past at Lossiemouth's Moray Golf Club – MacRae has no interest in the publicity generated by the battle of the sexes and was unimpressed by the gimmickry surrounding Wie's dalliance with the men's game.
She says she's not trying to make a similar statement, would never dream of trying to qualify for the Open championship, but simply wants an opportunity to compete at a time when tournaments for female professionals in Scotland are scarcer than Scots in the world's top 100. "I don't see it as playing in a men's event," she said. "I see it as playing in a PGA event. I'm a PGA professional."
A former winner of the British women's ope amateur stroke-play title at Nairn in 2005, it would surely have benefited MacRae if she was competing with men on a fast links where distance is less of an issue than it is on a substantial parkland course such as Gleneagles.
Even with the benefit of playing from a forward tee, however, MacRae is bound to be seriously disadvantaged over the PGA Centenary. She drives the ball around 250 yards, but will need more club for her second shot than most of her rivals.
Whatever scores she returns, though, MacRae will add spice to a tournament with a history dating back to 1908.
As Gordon Dewar, secretary of the Scottish region of the PGA, remarked: "It's fantastic we will have Heather at our national championship. It's something different and adds a new dimension to the event."

Renfrewshire make flying start to defence

of West Division inter-county team title

Renfrewshire, the defending champions, made an impressive start to their 2009 campaign to retain the West Division women's inter-county team championship at Stathaven Golf Club today.
They beat Lanarkshire, without Vagliano Trophy player Pamela Pretswell, soundly by the resounding margin of 8-1. The writing was on the wall for Lanarkshire after they lost the morning foursomes 3-0.
Dunbartonshire & Argyll, without their GB&I team selection and county champion Kylie Walker managed to edge a 5-4 win over Ayrshire, which represented a good afternoon's work by Ayrshire. They had lost the morning foursomes 2-1 but battled hard to share the singles 3-3
Tomorrow, it's Renfrewshire v Ayrshire and Lanarkshire v Dunbartonshire & Argyll.
On Wednesday, it's Lanarkshire v Ayrshire, Dunbartonshire & Argyll v Renfrewshire.

US FUTURES TOUR REPORT

Whitney Wade Wins First Tour Title At Duramed Championship

By LISA D MICKEY
Second-year professional Whitney Wade gave her father a pretty
memorable Father's Day gift. With Dad on the bag, the pint-size
Kentuckian rallied from six shots back to fire a five-under-par 66 to
win the $125,000 Duramed Championship with a nine-under-par total of
204.
She edged good pal Jean Reynolds (67) of Newnan, Georgia, who finished
second at 205 and third-place finisher Misun Cho (69) of Cheongju,
South Korea, who carded a total of 206 on the Grizzly Course at The
Golf Center at Kings Island, Mason, Ohio.
Both Reynolds and Cho already are tournament winners this season on the
Duramed FUTURES Tour, so they knew how to close out a win. But Wade,
playing three hours from home, had only won state women's open titles
in Kentucky (2007), Ohio (2008) and Colorado (2009).
The "nearly 5ft-3in" Kentucky firecracker was itching to prove to
herself that she could win here against the some of the world's best
young women professionals.
"I knew it was tight today, but I didn't exactly know where I stood,"
said Wade of Glasgow, Kentucky. "Jean was firing at pins and making
birdies and we were going back and forth with each other. Our group was
having a good time and getting things done."
Reynolds, Wade and amateur Victoria Kiser (70) of Orlando, Florida, who
finished seventh at 209, were playing in the second-to-last group
behind leader Pernilla Lindberg of Bollnas, Sweden.
Lindberg blistered this precision-demanding 6,203-yard, par-71 course
in the first round to match tPatty Sheehan's 1984 course record of
8-under-par 63. The Swede extended her lead on the second day to take a
three-shot advantage into the final round.
But Sunday was a different story for Lindberg, the former All-American
from Oklahoma State University who was playing in her third tournament
as a professional.
Rather than earning her first win as a pro in wire-to-wire fashion, she
stumbled early with bogeys on her first two holes, a par save from 10
feet on the third, and more deep breaths than she can remember to get
settled back into the kind of game she had played in the first two
rounds.
Lindberg countered her opening bogeys with birdies on the sixth and
ninth holes and even held on to her lead after she hooked her drive
into the trees on No. 10 and scrambled for bogey.
Her undoing probably came when she carded an uncharacteristic
double-bogey on the par-4 12th hole after she flew the green into a
water hazard, was forced to take her drop on a severe slope and chunked
her chip. At that point, she had sliipped into a four-way tie with Cho,
Reynolds and Wade.
"It was really one bad swing that cost way too much," said Lindberg,
who finished with a 4-over-par score of 75 to tie for fourth at 207
(-6) with Cindy Lacrosse (72) of Tampa, Florida
"Of course I'm disappointed because I went out there today trying to
win the tournament," Lindberg added. "But a lot of good things happened
this week. I need to remember that."
Wade was cruising along on the back nine and rolled in a 15-foot birdie
putt on the 14th hole to take the lead. At that point, Reynolds and
Lindberg were still in striking distance, one shot back.
"It was kind of like match play and we were definitely feeding off each
other," said Reynolds, who played one semester of college golf with
Wade at the University of Georgia
.
Down the stretch, Cho birdied the 15th, but played the last three holes
at even par, while Lindberg failed to get up and down for par on the
17th and dropped another shot. That left the former Georgia Bulldog
teammates to duke it out on the 18th. If Reynolds were to birdie and
Wade made par, they would be forced into extra holes. If Reynolds were
to birdie and Wade made bogey, Reynolds would win. But if Wade were to
birdie, she would just about be untouchable.
"There was a lot going on by the time we got to 18," said Reynolds, who
won the Tour's season-opening event in Winter Haven, Fla. "I was
starting to see stars because I knew that I needed to make that putt."
Reynolds drained her 18-footer for birdie to tie it up. That left Wade
staring at a five-foot, uphill birdie chance for the win. Only Cho,
playing one group back in the last pairing, could catch Wade, but to do
that, she would have to hole out from the fairway on the 526-yard par-5
finishing hole.
"I had missed an eight-foot chance for birdie on the 16th hole that my
momma could have made, so I knew I had to make that birdie on the
18th," said Wade. "When it went in, all I could think was, 'Did this
really happen?'"
Indeed it had. Winning today probably sank in a little when fellow
players doused her with buckets of beer. Or when she held up a
hand-blown custom-designed art "trophy," or when somebody handed her an
oversize cardboard cheque for $17,500, or when someone else handed her
an Apple iTouch for carding the day's lowest round.
And maybe it registered when fellow Kentuckians from just across the
Ohio River drove to this Cincinnati suburb to root her on and stopped
by to congratulate her as she tugged at her soggy beer-soaked clothing.
Or maybe it finally sank in when her dad, Mark Wade, adjusted his
sunglasses and apologised that he "might get choked up" while trying to
talk about walking every step of the week with his daughter, carrying
her bag, and watching her win her first title on the LPGA's
developmental tour. He had carried her bag on Father's Day last year at
the U.S. Women's Open and proudly bit his lip when she made a tricky
putt for par to make the 36-hole cut.
Now, she had won on a professional tour, beating 143 other competitors,
so close to home. And she had taken a big step toward her goal of
earning 2010 LPGA status, leaping from 42nd to No. 7 on the Duramed
FUTURES Tour's season money list. It was a father's dream to see his
child take another giant step in a game he had taught her to love.
"For this to happen today, it's just icing on the cake," said her dad,
smiling.
Weather was mostly sunny and humid with temperatures in the high 80s
and light afternoon wind between 5-7 mph.

Jane, Carly and Laura come from

behind to win Irish team title

Contrary to early reports from the course, Scotland won the international team event at the 3 Irish women's open amateur stroke-play championship at Douglas Golf Club, Cork today.
Jane Turner (Craigielaw), Carly Booth (Comrie) and Laura Murray (Alford) scored a famous come-from-behind victory over the final round.
They had been trailing Ireland by two shots with 18 holes to go but Leona Maguire and Lisa Maguire had counting scores of 81 and 75 respectively.
In contrast, Carly Booth had a 73 and Jane Turner a 75 for a third-round total of 148, compared with the Irish twins' Sunday total of 156.
Australia's Jane Bolland and Stacey Keating, both of whom scored 74, also finished with a third-round total of 148 which enabled them to leapfrog over Ireland into second place behind the Scots.
Well done, Carly, Jane and Laura!

Lisa wins play-off against Hannah

at the seventh extra hole

Lisa Maguire (Slieve Russell) birdied the SEVENTH extra hole of a sudden-death play-off to win the 3 Irish women's open amateur stroke-play championship at Douglas Golf Club, Cork this afternoon.
Fourteen-year-old twin Lisa had led from the start and almost to the finish but was overhauled on the inward half of the final round by Hannah Burke (Mid-Herts), who plays on the US college circuit as a student at Baylor University, Texas.
They tied at five-under-par 214 ... and then began surely one of the longest ever sudden-death play-offs in a British or Irish ladies' event of this stature.
Scotland's Jane Turner (Craigielaw) finished third on one under par 219 with rounds of 70, 73 and 75 over the par-73 lay-out.
Vagliano Trophy team selection Pamela Pretswell (Bothwell Castle) came 10th on 224 with 76, 73 and 75.
Carly Booth (Comrie), after a slow start with a first-round 81, played very well to add scores of 71 and 73 for a total of 225, which earned her joint 11th place.
Laura Murray (Alford) finished joint 15th on 228 with scores of 74, 76 and 78.
