Golf Approved for 2016 Olympic Programme on Vote By
International Olympic Committee

Competition will be held in Rio de Janeiro, selected as site of 2016 Games

Copenhagen, Denmark (October 9, 2009) – After an absence of more than a century, golf will return as an Olympic sport in 2016 along with rugby sevens following their approval by the International Olympic Committee membership during the IOC’s 121st Session.
They will be part of the Olympic Programme in Rio de Janeiro, which last week was selected as the host city for 2016 Games by the IOC. Golf was last an Olympic sport at the 1904 Games in St. Louis, Missouri, USA, when the United States and Canada were the only two competing countries.
“We are elated that the IOC membership has accepted golf as an Olympic sport, and look forward to seeing the world’s best golfers compete for gold at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro,” said Ty Votaw, Executive Director of the International Golf Federation Olympic Golf Committee, which has coordinated golf’s Olympic bid. “We thank the IOC for its support, and also congratulate rugby sevens for its inclusion in the 2016 Games.”
Votaw and Peter Dawson, chief executive of The R&A and joint secretary of the International Golf Federation, were accompanied by professionals Padraig Harrington of Ireland, Michelle Wie of the United States and Suzann Pettersen of Norway, as well as 16-year-old (British) Amateur Champion Matteo Manassero of Italy, for a final presentation to the IOC prior to the vote.
“We are extremely grateful that Padraig, Michelle, Suzann and Matteo were able to join us to help communicate the genuine interest world-class players of all ages share in golf becoming an Olympic sport,” Dawson said.
Golf and rugby sevens were recommended for the Olympic Programme by the IOC Executive Board in August following an extensive review process involving seven sports that were vying to be added to the 2016 Olympic Games. Although they emerged as the finalists, both sports still required final approval today by a majority of votes cast by the members of the IOC.
“In addition to those golfers who will have an opportunity to compete as Olympic athletes, we are excited for the national golf federations that will reap the benefits from today’s decision in terms of growth and support within their countries,” Dawson said. “This is a very significant day for golf.”
Leading up to today’s final vote, golf and rugby sevens emerged from a year-long evaluation that included formal presentations by the seven sports, the submission of a Detailed Questionnaire and responses to questions raised by both the IOC Programme Commission and the IOC Executive Board. The IOC Executive Board announced its recommendation of two sports following a meeting in Berlin, Germany on August 13.
“We strongly believed that golf deserved to be added to the Olympic Programme and felt that we presented a compelling case to the IOC,” Votaw said. “We have received unprecedented support from international golf organisations throughout this process, as well as from the world’s top-ranked men and women players, which was critical to our success. We also stressed the universal nature of golf, with 60 million people playing the sport in more than 120 countries.”
Based on player feedback, the IGF has proposed a format of 72-hole individual stroke play for both men and women. In case of a tie for either first, second or third place, a three-hole playoff is recommended to determine the medal winner(s).
The IGF also has recommended an Olympic field of 60 players for each of the men's and women's competition, using the Official World Golf Rankings as a method of determining eligibility. The top-15 world-ranked players would be eligible for the Olympics, regardless of the number of players from a given country. Beyond the top-15, players would be eligible based on the world rankings, with a maximum of two eligible players from each country that does not already have two or more players among the top-15.
Current world rankings from both the men’s and women’s games show that at least 30 countries would be represented in both the men’s and women’s competitions, from all continents, under this proposal.

Martha follows sister Stacy as US Women's

Mid-amateur championship winner

Martha Stacy Leach followed in the footsteps of her sister Hollis Stacy as a USGA title winner by winning the United States Women's Mid-Amateur championship on Thursday.
Martha beat former Georgia University team-mate Laura Coble 3 and 2 at Golden Hills Golf and Turf Club, Oscala in Florida.
The 47-year-old Leach, originally from Savannah, Georgia but now living in Hebron, Kentucky, and Stacy are only the second sisters to win USGA titles.
"It's special," said Leach, making her 22nd start in the tournament for players aged 25 and older. "It just means a lot. I love her, but I have a lot of other siblings I love, too. Hollis just happens to be a great golfer."
Stacy won six USGA titles, taking the US Girls' title in 1969-71 and the US Women's Open in 1977-78-84.
US Women's Amateur champions Harriot Curtis (1906) and Margaret Curtis (1907-11-12) are the only other sisters to win USGA titles.
"I'm so proud of my little sister," Stacy said. "She has a heart as big as the state of Georgia."
Leach made a 15ft birdie putt on the par-4 10th to take a one-hole lead and advanced that to three holes with winning pars on 12 and 14.
The 45-year-old Coble, from Augusta, Georgia, hit a wedge to inches for a birdie on the par-5 15th to cut her deficit to two holes, but Leach hit a 60yd wedge shot to 3½ feet on the par-5 16th and made the birdie putt to end the match.
"It was a great way to finish," Leach said. "I'm thinking in the 21 years I've played in this, an average 400 entries have been sent in, 8,400 women have played and there have only been 23 champions. And there have been a lot of double winners. What are your odds of winning this? This year I was either going to win the lottery or win the Women's Mid-Am. And I said, 'Damn, I won't be winning any money.' "
With the usual match-play concessions, Leach was even par for 16 holes and Coble was three over par.
"I was just a little bit off today with my swing, putting, and just couldn't get it all together," Coble said, "I'm disappointed that I didn't win, but I had a great week."

Coble v Leach for US women's mid-amateur title

FROM THE USGA WEBSITE
OCALA, Fla. (AP) — Laura Coble and Martha Leach advanced to the U.S. Women's Mid-Amateur final on Wednesday, beating past champions at Golden Hills Golf and Turf Club in the tournament for players 25 and older.
The 45-year-old Coble, from Augusta, Georgia, beat two-time champion Meghan Stasi of Oakland Park, Florida 5 and 4, and the 47-year-old Leach, from Hebron, Kentucky edged 1998 champion Virginia Derby Grimes of Meridian, Mississippi by one hole.
In the morning quarter-finals, Coble beat Christy Schultz of Rochester, N.Y., 3 and 1, and Leach topped Dawn Woodard of Greer, South Carolina by one hole..
Leach made a 36-foot par putt on the 18th green to beat Derby Grimes.
``I just willed that baby in,'' Leach said. ``I love the outcome. I didn't sleep at all last night because I don't know where the ball is going. I can't hit it in the fairway. From midnight until 6 this morning I wanted to get up and tinker with my swing.''
Coble led after the first hole, was six up at the 13th tee and closed out Stasi with a par on the par-3 14th.
``It's a surprising thing, but it's a wonderful thing,'' Coble said. ``Everything else is gravy.''

FROM THE GOLF DIGEST WEBSITE
American Junior Golf Association essay award winner:

"Herba"
By Sam Bernstein of Riverdale, New York
Still sweaty from the tournament, I nudge open the back door to the beach house and drop my golf shoes next to my grandfather's old set of clubs. I smile, recollecting how eager he had been to show me the woods' revolutionary sleek design and silver heads, now speckled with rust and at least a decade outmoded.
I make my way through the house and peer quietly into my grandfather's bedroom. On a bulletin board, blanketed by family photos, a small Kodak print catches my eye: my first golf lesson. My grandfather, some seventy years old then, huddles over my two-year-old self. The moment springs to life in my memory ? his weathered hands helping me swing the tiny yellow club, the first of countless hours my grandfather spent teaching me to play golf.
As always, my grandfather sits in his chair, his head sloped in deep slumber. Although age has worn his face and body, I know his smile will fill the room with warmth when I wake him in a few moments. A lovely middle-aged woman now lives in his home as his caretaker. Unable to function without her, he spends most of his day anchored to that chair, reading, watching the television in the bookcase across from him, taking his meals on a tray on his lap, and gazing at the putting green outside.
Directly across from my grandfather, a long side table holds a statue of a young man finishing his swing in perfect form. A plaque at the base reads: "Sam Berstein-2008 Long Island Junior Golf Champion." I remember my final five-foot putt for victory on the 18th hole, wishing that my grandfather had been there to see it. Herba, as I have called him since I was a little boy, loves the game and he loves me unconditionally.
From my earliest years, Herba helped foster in me a passion for golf that has been a defining force in my life. Tom Friedman wrote in a recent column: "Golf is all about individual characterThis wonderful but cruel game never stops testing or teaching you."
Herba was a far better teacher than player. He gave me the best piece of golf advice I have ever received. I call it "Herba's Ten-Second Rule." Bad shots are part of the game. If you get too emotionally high or low, you will never succeed. I give myself ten seconds after each shot to feel good or bad. But after those ten seconds, I move on. I continue to play the game -- shot by shot.
I lower myself into the chair beside him. "Herba, it's me, Sam," I say as I kiss him gently on the cheek, and clasp his hand. He opens his eyes and nods slowly. "It's so good to see you Sammy," he says. "How was the tournament?"
"Do you want the recap shot by shot or hole by hole?" I ask him.
"The usual," he replies. "Shot by shot. Always, shot by shot."

From Colin Farquharson: I wish I could write like that! Brings a tear to the eye of this grandfather.

JUNIORS OUT TO MASTER GLENEAGLES

NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY THE SCOTTISH GOLF UNION
The future stars of Scottish golf will take to the fairways of Gleneagles this Sunday when the resort’s famous Queen’s Course hosts the final of the 2009 Dunfermline Building Society Junior Masters.
With more than 2,500 youngsters taking part this year, the Junior Masters is the country’s biggest participation golf event for boys and girls and over the last decade the event has seen young stars such as Lloyd Saltman and Carly Booth taking their first steps on the big stage.
Following four regional finals this summer, the leading fifty boys and thirty girls will line-up on Sunday, with representation from clubs as far afield as Moray in the Highlands to Kelso in the Borders. As the stableford points system is being used for the event’s format, players of all levels are able to take part with a handicap range from three to 36.
With Gleneagles hosting the 2014 Ryder Cup in just under five years time, the Dunfermline Building Society Junior Masters provides youngsters in Scotland with a fantastic opportunity to experience playing in a high profile event at one of the world’s most famous venues.
“The Junior Masters is a fantastic event as it allows boys and girls of all golfing abilities to play alongside each other. Any junior club member under the age of sixteen with a handicap can compete and we’ve seen some great young players make a name for themselves since this event began ten years ago.” explains the SGU’s Chief Executive Hamish Grey.
“Through clubgolf, Scotland’s national junior golf programme, the number of young golfers has grown significantly and more than 38,000 primary five children were introduced to golf at school this year. The Junior Masters is the first step on the competitive ladder for many of these youngsters and it’s great to stage the Final at Gleneagles, who do so much to support junior golf in Scotland.” he added.
The event is part of Dunfermline Building Society’s three-year sponsorship of amateur golf in Scotland in addition to the Junior Club of the Year Awards, won earlier this year by Ranfurly Castle. The Society’s Fairway Savers account has also raised significant funds for clubs across Scotland.
The action gets underway on the Queen’s Course at 8.30am on Sunday, with free admission for parents, families and spectators. To keep up-to-date with scoring from the Final, please visit http://www.scottishgolf.org/

Hannah tops NINE English players

at the same US college tournament

It might well have been a record - NINE English students at American colleges played in this week's Johnie Imes Invitational tournament over three rounds at The Club at Old Hawthorne, Columbia in Missouri.

Hannah Lovelock from Surrey, pictured right, a sophomore student at Missouri University, was the best of the bunch. She finished joint ninth on 227 with rounds of 79, 73 and 75 for 227 over a par-72, 6204yd course.

Hannah looked like to get seventh place until she had a double bogey 6 at the first hole, the last hole she played! Considering she had three double bogey 7s in the space of five holes in her first round, Hannah did very well indeed to get a top-10 finish behind the winner from Tulsa, Kristina Merkle with scores of 69, 74 and 79 for 222.

Stacey Rodger from Sussex, a senior student at Missouri State, finished joint 12th with scores of 75, 81 and 71 for 228, She was tied 36th at the start of the last round but six birdies in her sub-par round boosted her up the leaderboard. Stacey had a quadruple bogey 8 in her second round or she might have finished in the top 10.

Nicola Race (Missouri) from Essex has still to find the form that saw her transferred from Redlands Community College where she was having great success at a lower level. Nicola finished tied 43rd on 236 with scores of 82, 77 and 77.
Ami Storey from Ponteland Golf Club, Blythe in the North-east of England and a sophomore student at Kansas State, shared 53rd place on 238 with scores of 83, 74 and 81.
Lauren Blease from Surrey, a sophomore student at Florida International, shared 59th place with scores of 78, 82 and 80 for 240.
Freshman team-mate Nikki Dunn from Harrogate finished joint 63rd on 241 with scores of 79, 79 and 83. Also on the 241 mark was Kirsty Rands, a sophomore at Mississippi University, from Surrey. She had rounds of 78, 83 and 80.
Middle Tennessee State team-mates Steph Gough and Clara Leathers, both from Aylesbury, finished joint 73rd and 87th respectively in a field of 99 players. Steph scored 84, 81 and 82 for 247 while Clara had rounds of 84, 83 and 85 for 252.

Sally Watson moves up to joint fifth in

Edean Ihlanfeldt Invitational

Curtis Cup Scot Sally Watson, pictured right at Harlech in June by Cal Carson Golf Agency, has moved up to joint fifth in a field of 73 players with one round to go in the Edean Ihlanfeldt Invitational women's college golf tournament at Sahalee Country Club, Washington state.
Stanford University, California freshman Sally, from South Queensferry before the family home moved to Elie, has had rounds of 77 and 72 for a 36-hole tally of five-over-par over the 6,136yd, par-72 course.
In her second round she had birdies at the first, short fifth and short 17th, dropping shots at the fourth, 10th and 13th in halves of 35 and 37.
Another Scot in the field, last year's British open amateur stroke play champion Roseanne Niven from Crieff, a senior year student at California-Berkeley University, is in joint 39th position with scores of 80 and 82. In her second round, Roseanne had one triple bogey and two double bogeys. In her first round she also had two double bogeys.
Two of Niven's team-mates, German-born Pia Halbig and Emily Childs are in first and second places after two rounds. Halbig has shot 73 and 72 for two-over 146, one ahead of Childs' 73 and 74.
Natasha Podmore from Delamere Forest and San Francisco University is sharing third place on 148 after rounds of 72 and 76. Natasha had a birdie at the long sixth but bogeys at the fifth and seventh and a double bogey at the eighth in an outward half of 39 before she bogeyed the 10th.
Natasha steadied up after that and parred the last eight holes.
California (599) lead the 13-team event by 10 shots from Stanford with Pepperdine (613) third, San Francisco (614) fourth and San Jose State - Janice Moodie's old university - come next on 620.

US COLLEGE NEWS

Jodi finishes joint sixth in Windy

City Collegiate Championship

Jodi Ewart from Catterick, arguably the highest-ranked British player on the US college circuits - male or female - had to settle for a share of sixth place in the Windy City Collegiate Championship at The Glen Club, Glenview in Illinois today.
Over a par-72 course of some 6,286yd, the New Mexico University student, pictured right at Harlech in June by Cal Carson Golf Agency, couldn't get the birdie putts to drop in a final round of two-over-par 74.
She managed only one birdie, not enough to offset three bogeys.
She had four birdies in her second round, which also included a rare double bogey 6, at the eighth, and three birdies in her first round.
That double bogey cost Jodi fourth or fifth place in the final analysis behind the Canadian-born winner, Maude-Aimee LeBlanc (Purdue) who scored 68, 69 and 74 for five-under-par 211. She finished a shot ahead of Ashley Bauer (Michigan) (71-72-69).
Jodi Ewart had her problems but they were nothing compared with the sort of tournament fellow England international Ellis Keenan from Sunningdale, a freshman at the University of Nevada Las Vegas, had.
Ellis finished way down the field in 65th place with a total of 236, made up of seesaw rounds of 80, 72 and 84. She had an uncharacteristic five double bogeys over the three rounds, two of them over her last nine holes which required 43 strokes. She had no birdies over the final 18 holes after having six of them over the first two rounds.
Purdue (860) won the team title ahead of Tulane (874) with Arizona (885) third of 15 teams.
New Mexico (890) finished joint sixth.

The Glasgow-born player, who led the field with a 64 in the first round, finished with a 71 for 13-under-par 275, five shots behind the winner, Lorena Ochoa who signed off with a 70 for 18-under 270.
The Mexican won by four shots from Michelle Wie and Brittany Lang and earned $195,000 for her victory - compared with over $1,000,000 which Matt Kuchar collected for winning a play-off at the sixth extra hole in the US PGA Tour event this past weekend.
Janice Moodie's take-home pay was $59,560 and boosted her season's LPGA earnings to $195,492 which places her 56th in the money list, compared with Women's British Open champion Catriona Matthew's $433,291 and 26th place.
Moodie's peak years on the LPGA Tour were from 1999 to 2002 inclusive when she had her four most fruitful seasons - $447,903, $534,833, $595,463 and $424,238.

Winning Midlothian team at Mortonhall - Jane Turner Rachael Watton, Claire MacDonald and Claire Hargan (image by courtesy of Tracy Laughland).

CLAIRE MACDONALD WINS EAST OF

TITLE WITH STROKE OF GENIUS

Gullane's Claire MacDonald, who is also a member at Mortonhall, used her dual local knowledge to win the East of Scotland women's golf championship for the first time at Mortonhall Golf Club today.
On a bright, relatively calm but chilly day, Claire returned a one-under-par 72 (two below the CSS) to win by two strokes from two young Midlothian county team-mates, Gabrielle Macdonald (Craigielaw) and Rachael Watton (Mortonhall). Rachael's better inward half earned her second scratch prize.
Claire MacDonald was out in two-over-par 39 but came back strongly in three-under-par 33 with birdies at the 11th, 12th and 14th.
Her birdie at the 11th came into the "believe-it-or-not" category as she drove wide of the fairway and had a terrible lie, awkward stance etc. Somehow or other she managed to get back ball back on to the fairways – and then holed her third shot with a new wedge she has just acquired.
Stroke of luck or stroke of genius? Whatever it was, it probably made the difference between victory and defeat because she looked to be facing a bogey at best at the 11th.
Rachael Hanlon from the St Regulus club, St Andrews won the leading handicap award with a net 71 off four. She had a shot to spare over Hannah Scott (Broomieknowe) who was playing off 10. Carol Brown (Mortonhall) took third place with a net 73 off 10.
With Midlothian players finishing 1-2-3 in the scratch returns, hardly surprising that Midlothian won the team trophy ahead of Fife, Stirling & Clackmannan and East Lothian.
They totalled 221, thanks to the efforts of Claire MacDonald 72, Rachael Watton 74, Jane Turner 75 and Claire Hargan 75. Best three scores counted for the team total.
Scotland international Louise Kenney (Pitreavie), a previous winner of the title, had to withdraw because of a commitment to caddie in the Alfred Dunhill Links championship.
