Japanese, South Koreans monopolise

Women's British Open leaderboard

It's hardly a leading group likely to pull the home crowds into Sunningdale Golf Club, Berkshire on Sunday for the final round of the Ricoh Women's British Open championship.
The Japanese sponsors will be delighted that Yuri Fudoh leads on 203 by one shot from South Korean Ji-Yai Shin, with another Japanese player, Ai Miyazato, in third place.
Americans Cristie Kerr and Juli Inkster are the leading non-Orientals on 206, sharing fourth place but three shots off the pace.
The top 20 is awash with South Koreans as they continue their take-over of the world's female pro tours and leading events ... the LPGA Tour, the Futures Tour and now the top female pro event in Europe.
Players with unrecognisable faces, almost unpronounceable names who speak little or no English.
And what's happened to little "Miss Magic from Mexico?" The defending champion, Lorena Ochoa is sharing 10th place on 208.

Typhoon Tyson sweeps to English girls' title

PRESS RELEASE ISSUED BY ENGLISH WOMEN'S GOLF ASSOCIATION
Kent’s Sarah Tyson swept to victory in the English girls’ championship when she defeated Cheshire’s Charlotte Wild 6 and 5 at Durham City.
The 17-year-old from Redlibbets played confidently throughout the final and mastered the greens – while Charlotte (Mere) struck the ball well but struggled with the putts. “This is just fantastic – especially as it’s my last year as a junior,” said Sarah, who had three birdies and was one-under par when the match ended.
“I did feel confident but I knew Charlotte was going to give me a good game. We both tried our best but she just missed a few putts.”
Her father, Andy, watched her every shot of the way and said afterwards: “That’s the best golf I have ever seen Sarah play. She just came into this with great determination.”
Sarah got off to a quick start, winning the first with a birdie, salvaging a half at the second with a magical downhill chip and winning both the third and fourth with pars. She had another birdie on the eighth, where her approach finished just inches from the hole, to get to four up.
Charlotte won the 10th with a solid par but although she gave herself a number of other opportunities with impressive play into the greens her putter let her down. The difference between the two girls’ play was highlighted on the 11th where Sarah managed to two-putt across the difficult, sloping green, while Charlotte took three after her second putt lipped out.
It took Sarah to four holes up and she said: “That hole was crucial and it put me in a pretty good position.”
Sarah went on to score a remarkable birdie on the 12th, where she threaded her second shot through trees to within 10ft of the pin. A steady par on the 13th gave her the title. “It’s just brilliant,” said Sarah, who has only recently recovered from a bad wrist injury.
Afterwards Charlotte remarked: “I’m disappointed but I’m really proud of reaching the final. I just let Sarah get too far ahead early on and I couldn’t hole any putts. Sarah played very well.” Norfolk’s Rebecca Heeles (Royal Norwich) won the second flight final, beating Yorkshire’s Katie Barraclough (East Bierley) 3 and 1.
“It was real up-and-down match,” said Rebecca, who is also the English schools U-16 champion. The lead swung to and fro between the girls but Rebecca won the 14th, 15th, 16th and 17th to move from one down to victory.
Setanta Golf filmed both finals and they will be featured in the near future on their magazine programme Out of Bounds, which is shown on Wednesday evenings.

Pamela Williamson retiring from
senior international golf

PRESS RELEASE
Pamela Williamson (Baberton), a past Scottish senior stroke-play and match-play champion, has announced her retirement from senior international golf after a long and very successful career.
Pamela, pictured right by Cal Carson Golf Agency (all rights reserved), has been an ever-present member of the Scottish veterans' team since the mid-1990s and, more recently, has been a regular member of the Scottish senior international team since its inception in 2004.
Most recently, she played for Scotland in the European senior ladies' team championship, the first time Scotland decided to enter a team.
This year's Vets' Jamboree will be Pamela's swansong as a player but her experience will not be lost as she has recently taken on the mantle of vice-captain of the Scottish Vets.
We are delighted that Pamela's vast knowledge and experience will not be lost to Scottish golf.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION FROM COLIN FARQUHARSON
Pamela Williamson has helped me to compile a list of her golfing achievements. Here are what she describes as "significant highlights."
Strathtyrum Trophy (St Andrews) winner 1999.
Scottish seniors stroke-play champion 1999, 2002, 2005.
Scottish seniors match-play champion 2005.
European, British & Canadian senior championships - over-60s winner 2002.
Dutch seniors - Runner-up 2002.
Irish seniors runner-up 1001, winner 2002 & 2003.
Italian seniors winner 2004.
Senior international foursomes (with Valerie Hassett) winner 2003
Canadian Super Seniors winner 2007.
"I am quite touched about the interest in my senior golfing career," says Pamela. "Playing for Scotland, albeit at senior level, has been, for me, the absolute pinnacle of my sporting life. Therefore, recognition of this is hugely meaningful to me.
"I am still going to play in my favourite championships and one or two which, perhaps, are a little different, eg Finnish, Hungarian, Estonian, Croatia!"

Charlotte v Sarah for English girls' title

PRESS RELEASE ISSUED BY ENGLISH WOMEN'S GOLF ASSOCIATION
Cheshire’s Charlotte Wild and Kent’s Sarah Tyson will meet in Saturday’s final of the English girls’ championship at Durham City.
Both players are members of English Women’s Golf Association squads; both were on commanding form in their semi-finals and both won through by the margin of 4 and 3.
Charlotte, 18, beat her county colleague Rachael Goodall (Heswall), 17, while Sarah, 17, defeated Suffolk’s Heidi Baek (Felixstowe Ferry) (14).
“I am really excited,” said Charlotte, who was determined to shine in the championship after she was named only as a reserve for the team for next week’s Girls’ International Matches at Panmure, Carnoustie.
The Mere player took charge early in her match and was four up at the turn, before losing both the 10th and 11th. Her response was to birdie both the 12th and 14th to re-establish her comfortable lead.
A half on the short 15th saw her safely through to the final.
“I played well overall but I was a bit scrappy on two holes. Rachael is a good player and can make birdies from anywhere so even when I was four up I knew I had to keep going,” said Charlotte.
This season Charlotte has retained the Cheshire girls’ championship, won the Northern Foursomes and been third in the Irish stroke-play championship.
Sarah Tyson – like Charlotte – will be playing in her first final. “I’m just really looking forward to tomorrow,” she said. “I’ve never got past the second round before!”
She made very few mistakes in her semi-final and was one-under par and six up after 11 holes. She lost two holes when she missed fairways off the tee and had to chip out but secured her place in the final with a couple of steady halves.
“I got a little bit annoyed with myself when I lost those holes and Heidi was hitting it close.,” said Sarah, who plays at Redlibbets. “But I calmed myself down and stuck at it and I was pleased with the way I played.”
This result is particularly sweet for Sarah, who has been out of action since May with a bad wrist injury.
The Flight Two finalists are Norfolk’s Rebecca Heeles (Royal Norwich) and Yorkshire’s Katie Barraclough (East Brierley).

Michele Wie misses cut by a mile

in US PGA Tour event in Reno

Michele Wie missed the cut by mile - nine strokes to be precise - after a mediocre second round of 80 in the US PGA Tour's Legends Reno Tahoe Open in Nevada.
The Hawiaan threatened to become the first female since Babe Zaharias in 1945 to beat the cut in a US PGA Tour event when she opened her campaign with a one-over-par 73.
But she had only 24 putts in the first round. Her putting could not save her second time round and she had an 80 for 153.
Scot Martin Laird made the cut with one shot to spare with scores of 73 and 70 for 143.
At the top of the leaderboard it's Parker McLachlin (US) on 10-under-par 130 with scores of 68 and 62 by four shots from Australian Nick Flanagan (69-65) and American John Merrick (67-67) on 134.

Lorna Bennett (Ladybank) came back from three down in the final to beat Fiona De Vries (St Rule) at the 20th hole and retain the Scottish senior women's amateur match-play golf championship at Deeside Golf Club today.
It was a game of two halves with Fiona, a St Andrews hotelier, having much the better of the outward half.
Fiona birdied the third and eighth and also won the fourth with a par to be three up on the ninth tee. Out in par 37, Fiona was three up.
Lorna, a solicitor in Fife, won back the 11th and 12th but lost the 13th to fall back to two down again.
She won the 15th to cut her deficit to one and holed a curly 12 to 15ft downhill birdie putt from behind the flag on the 18th green to square the match. Lorna had covered the second nine in an approximate 37 for a round of 78, Fiona home in 40 for 77.
The short 19th was halved in 3s after Lorna holed a tricky second putt for a half. At the second extra hole, Lorna won the title with a pitch-and-putt 4.
It was the first time she had led in the match.
"I have to say I'm surprised that I am still champion, considering the state of play at the turn. But I just hung on in there and holed a few putts," said Lorna.
Kathleen Sutherland (Royal Montrose) won Flight 2 final in which she beat Alex Glennie (Kilmarnock Barassie) by 2 and 1.
Today's results:
Semi-finals
Lorna Bennett (Ladybank) bt Mary Smith (Tain) 2 holes.

Death of Therese O'Reilly, a Champion of Ireland

PRESS RELEASE ISSUED BY IRISH LADIES GOLF UNION
It is with deep regret that the ILGU has learnt of the death of Therese O’Reilly (Grange), past Irish champion, international and international team captain after a long illness bravely borne.
Following her inter-provincial debut for Leinster in 1977, Therese’s impressive ball-striking saw her win international selection that same year and again in 1978.

After starting a family in the early eighties, she returned to competitive golf and captured the Irish women’s close championship at Castlerock in 1986. As a player, she continued to represent Ireland and Leinster through to 1988 and captained the Irish team in 1994 at Huddersfield and again the following year at Wrexham.
Aged 52, she led the field of past internationals by two strokes to win the Irish senior women’s championship at Thurles in 2006.
A past chairman of the Eastern District, and more recently vice-president, she was actively involved in the administration of the ILGU at all levels. She will be fondly remembered as an outstanding sportswoman who was never short of an encouraging word for her fellow competitors and in particular talented juniors.
A role-model in the promotion of the women’s game, she loved life, laughed loud and often. Her characteristic good humour and sense of fun will be sadly missed by her many golfing companions and lifelong friends.
Our condolences go to her husband Des, son Andrew, daughters Jennifer, Laura and the late Nicole, brothers, sisters, relatives and many many friends.

Ar dheis De go raibh a anam dilis.
Removal this evening, Friday 1st August, from Fanagans Funeral Home, Lower Main Street, Dundrum to St. Patrick's Church, Monkstown, arriving at 5pm.
Funeral tomorrow, Saturday morning, after 10am Mass to Shanganagh Cemetery.
Family flowers only, donations if desired to Blackrock Hospice.

Time to start thinking seriously about the
2009 Hacienda del Alamo Winter Festival

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Only six months and a bit to go to the 2009 Hacienda del Alamo Women's Winter Golf Festival with its streamlined programme of four events over a long weekend (February 11 to 17).
Have you made up your mind about coming back if you enjoyed the inaugural event - which I am sure you did - or are you going to come for the first time with some friends?
You will find all the details if you click on the appropriate FESTIVAL words at the top of the left hand column and this is just a reminder that there are separate prize lists for:
*Lady amateur golfers with handicaps of 20 or under.
*Girl golfers with handicaps of 20 or under.
*Senior lady golfers with handicaps of or under.
*Lady professional golfers (who can take a party of female club members with them and coach them at the five-star HDA practice facilities if they wish).
If lady golfers want to go to Hacienda del Alamo with a male partner/husband/son, then they will be allowed to play over the Dave Thomas-designed course at a reduced rate when tee times are available. And males are welcome to join the ladies for the St Valentine's Day pro-am on the Saturday.
If you are looking for accommodation at the five-star Hacienda del Alamo Golf Resort, here's some news from one of the villa owners: Phil Eastham

Michele (73) draws biggest gallery
in US PGA Tour event

Michele Wie drew the biggest gallery of the day - the largest in the history of the event said the tournament director - and responded with a one-over-par round of 73 in the US PGA Tour event - for men - the Legends Reno-Tahoe Open at Reno, Nevada.
The Hawaiian teenager struggled early on but once she settled she looked the part and received a lot of encouragement from the noisy ground.
No female has made the cut on a US PGA Tour event since Babe Zaharias in 1945.
"I'm not going to think about that at all because if you think about making the cut, that's all you think about," Wie said. "You think about other players, you start thinking about what position you're in, and you start thinking about what you have to do. All I'm going to think about tomorrow is how am I going to make a putt? How am I going to hit a fairway?"
Wie's driving in the thin mountain air and putting were on. She required only 24 putts.
"It would be great if I could [drive it these distances] at sea level," she laughed. "That would be awesome."

Here we go again! Juli Inkster (48)

leads Ricoh Women's British Open

FROM THE AOL GOLF NEWS SERVICE
American Juli Inkster, at 48 the oldest player in the field, took a leaf out of Greg Norman's book when the Ricoh Women's British Open began at Sunningdale Golf Club today.
On a day when Annika Sorenstam kicked off her last major before retirement with only a level par 72, Inkster overcame a tee-time of 6.52am to grab an eagle and five birdies for a seven under 65.
She led by one from a large group which included England's Johanna Head, whose husband Terry is the caddie of Ian Poulter and was on the Open runner-up's bag as he started the Bridgestone world championship in Ohio with a level par 70.
Victory on Sunday would make Inkster the oldest winner of a women's major in history - and that, of course, only two weeks after 53-year-old Norman led at Royal Birkdale with nine holes to play before slipping back to joint third.
She played her first major 30 years ago and said: "I always thought I would play about five years, have a couple of kids and retire.
"I'm kind of unique. Golf is what I do. I have a family and I enjoy being home, but I also enjoy what I do."
While Norman's performance in the Open was a total surprise, Inkster's was not. The mother-of-two, already with seven majors to her name, is still in the world's top 20 and was unbeaten when America retained the Solheim Cup in Sweden last year.
Highlight of her Sunningdale round was a drive to 18 feet on the 273yd ninth to set up an eagle 2.
Defending champion and world No 1 Lorena Ochoa had a chance to match the Californian's score when she stood five under with four to go, but bogeys at the 16th and 17th meant she had to settle for a three under 69.
Sorenstam would happily have taken that, but it was never on from the moment she bogeyed three of the first six holes.
Two more English players, Karen Stupples and Rebecca Hudson, will resume on Friday only two behind. Stupples won the event when it was last held on the course four years ago, while Hudson is seeking her third victory of the season.
Catriona Matthew was in joint 13th place with a 68, one shot better than Janice Moodie. Mhairi McKay had a 71.
Curtis Cup amateur Krystle Caithness (St Regulus) had a 76. Scroll down to an earlier story from Sunningdale to find out her figures.

Lauren Taylor wins English U-15 girls’ championship

Warwickshire’s Lauren Taylor claimed her second national title in a week when she won the English Under-15 girls’ championship by two shots at Ramside, Durham. The 13-year-old from Rugby secured her win with a one-under par 73 in the final round, which was played in torrential rain.
A week ago Lauren also won the Under-18 title at the English women's stroke-play championship at The Berkshire.
“It’s great – two titles in one week and I really did want to win this one,” said Lauren, who was playing in the event for the first time. She shared the lead through the first 36 holes but moved three shots clear of the field with her third round 76.
In the final round she went out of bounds on the first hole and started double-bogey, bogey. But she didn’t get rattled. “I don’t think about what anyone else is doing. I just play my own game,” she said.
She soon repaired the damage with birdies on the fourth and eighth to reach the turn at one over par. Three more birdies on the back nine helped her come home in two-under 34.
Meanwhile, Lancashire’s Emily Taylor also returned a sub-par score of two-under 72 in the difficult conditions and claimed second place .
She’s a member at Royal Lytham & St Annes and said: “I like the rain – we get it a lot at home and wind! I was very pleased considering the weather. I held my nerve well and managed to keep everything dry which was the main thing.”
Emily has come down from seven to four handicap already this season.

Charley Hull wins English
Under-13 title

PRESS RELEASE ISSUED BY ENGLISH WOMEN'S GOLF ASSOCIATION
Northamptonshire’s Charley Hull (pictured right by Leaderboard Photography) won a ding-dong battle to become the English Under-13 girls’ champion at Ramside, Durham today.
The 12-year-old started the final round with a four-shot lead and finished with a three-stroke win.
Cheshire’s Bronte Law, who was both her playing partner and closest rival, challenged strongly for the title. After eight holes, in which the girls had traded both birdies and bogeys, the two players were level.
Charley drew ahead again, when she birdied the ninth while Bronte dropped a shot, and she kept in front for the rest of the round.
Charley, who plays at Kettering and finished the 54-hole event on seven over par, said of her first English title: “It’s great.”
She’s used to the big occasion, having won a national competition for club golfers at the age of nine. She’s currently the Northamptonshire girls’ champion, regional four counties junior champion and a member of the county first team.
Bronte, 13, was disappointed to finish runner-up for the second year in succession but said: “I couldn’t have done any more than I did today. It wasn’t my day. Charley deserved it. She played three rounds of good golf.”
Bronte, who plays off two at Bramhall, is the Cheshire Under-16 and Under-13 champion and plays for the county girls’ team.
Both girls now move on to more competition. Bronte is heading for Scotland and the St Andrews junior ladies’ open while Charley’s next date is the Midland girls’ championship.

Curtis Cup Scot's 76 in Ricoh Women's British Open

Krystle's triple bogey 7 takes

shine off four birdies

Krystle Caithness did not do herself justice in the first round of the Ricoh British Women's Open championship at Sunningdale Golf Club today.
While American veteran Juli Inkster was setting the space with a seven-under-par 65, the 19-year-old Curtis Cup amateur from Cellardyke, Fife was taking 76 shots, four over par.
Krystle's triple bogey 7 at the seven took the shine off four birdies, at the second, third, 10th and 11th in halves of 39 and 37.
She also bogeyed the first and fifth and had a weak finish with shots dropped at the 15th, 17th and 18th.
Inkster had an eagle 2 at the ninth and birdies at the first, fifth, 10th, 12th and 14th in bogey-free halves of 32 and 33.
Title-holder Lorena Ochoa from Mexico also finished poorly by her lofty standards. She bogeyed the 16th and 17th in halves of 33 and 36 for a 69, the same score as Sweden's Helen Alfredsson who won the Evian Masters on Sunday.
Annika Sorenstam and Karrie Webb matched the par of 72.

Mary McCallay Trophy Order of Merit
36-hole event is CANCELLED

The last of the season's SLGA Order of Merit 36-hole Sunday competitions, the Mary McCallay Trophy at Dumfries & Galloway Golf Club, has been cancelled due to lack of entries.
It was due to be played on Sunday, August 10.
Fiona Macgregor, Dumfries-shire Ladies county captain, said: "We will return entry fees in due course. We are sorry it had to be cancelled but we felt it was not viable to run the competition with the number of entries we had."
Earlier this week, the SLGA cancelled the Scottish women's foursomes at Brunston Castle on August 17 for the same reason.
A disturbing trend.

Stacy Lewis to play in two
Futures Tour events
during August
Stacy Lewis, who turned professional after winning all five of her matches for the victorious United States team in the Curtis Cup match over the Old Course, St Andrews, has entered two tournaments on the Duramed Futures Tour next month.
Lewis, pictured right by Cal Carson Golf Agency in Curtis Cup action, will be in the field next week at the Falls Auto Group Classic in London, Kentucky, set for August 8 to 10, as well as in the Greater Richmond Duramed Futures Classic in Richmond, Virginia, to be staged from August 15 to 17.
“I had a one-month break between two LPGA tournaments and I just want to stay competitive,” said Lewis, 23, of The Woodlands, Texas. “I know so many people out there and I’m really looking forward to it. But of course, I’m trying to win and earn playing status for 2009, just to cover all my bases.”
Lewis, 23, is eligible to join the Duramed Futures Tour and to compete in tournaments based on her top-30 standing on the 2008 Golfweek Collegiate Rankings. The 2008 SEC Player of the Year finished the season ranked second in the collegiate rankings as she completed her college career this spring at the University of Arkansas. She also is eligible to compete on the Duramed Futures Tour based on her No. 1 women’s amateur ranking.
Lewis tied for third place in this year's 2008 US Women's Open. She won 12 tournaments during her college golf career.
Including next week’s event in Kentucky, only four tournaments remain in the Futures Tour's regular-season race for the five 2009 LPGA cards awarded to the top five season money winners. Lewis will not be eligible to earn one of those cards because recipients must have participated in a minimum of six tournaments, but she can earn 2009 playing status by finishing in the top 90 on the Tour’s season-ending 2008 Money List.

Loretto boarding school golf pays
off for Jessica Wilcox

PRESS RELEASE ISSUED BY ENGLISH WOMEN'S GOLF ASSOCIATION
Lincolnshire’s Jessica Wilcox and Warwickshire’s Abbey Gittings tied at the top of the leaderboard after 36 holes of qualifying in the English girls’ championship at Durham City.
Both teenagers shot two-under- par 70 in the second round – and both had identical first round totals of 77.
But 16-year-old Jessica, a member of the Blankney club, won the top seeding for the match-play stages of the championship by virtue of her last nine holes. She came home in 35, while Abbey scored 36.
“It’s great,” said Jessica, who is playing in the championship for the second time. “I didn’t do very well at all last year but I’ve practised a lot since then and I go to a boarding school in Scotland (Loretto School, Musselburgh) where we play a lot of golf.”
She came into the event in top form, having won the Lincolnshire Under-21 title last week, helped by a three-under par score.
Jessica’s second round was remarkably tidy: she had 11 straight pars before scoring birdies on the 12th, 14th and 16th. She had her only bogey of the day on the 18th: “I think I was getting nervous – I wanted to get in,” she laughed.
Abbey Gittings has also brought good form to the event as the winner of both the Warwickshire lady and junior county titles.
She scored one-under par on both nines in the second round. On the way out, she had eight pars and one birdie, while on the way home she had four birdies, including one on the 18th, but also had a double bogey and one other dropped shot.
Among the other good scores recorded during the day were level par rounds from Sarah Tyson (Redlibbets) and Daisy Dyer (Chigwell), who are both members of English Women’s Golf Association squads. Sarah qualified in third place and Daisy in fourth.
The leading 32 players qualify for the championship match-play. The next 32 play in the second flight.

She’s been a prominent junior golfer since she was nine and won a national competition for club golfers organised by the LGU.

A very happy Mary Smith with the seniors' championship trophy, donated a couple of years ago by the late Tony Moffat, at Deeside Golf Club (Cal Carson Golf Agency image, all rights reserved).
Tain's Mary Smith wins Scottish
seniors' title at first attempt
By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Tain’s Mary Smith made the long trip from the North of Scotland to Aberdeen a very worthwhile one when she won the Scottish senior women’s amateur stroke-play golf championship at sunny Deeside Golf Club today.
“I was old enough to make my debut in the seniors’ championship last year at Glenbervie but decided against it. This year, with the venue in the North-east, I thought I would have a go – and I’m glad I did,” said Mary whose niece Sammy Vass plays for Scotland in the girls’ home internationals at Panmure next week.
Sammy stopped her aunt from winning the Tain Golf Club women’s title for a fourth year in a row by beating her in the final recently.
Mary Smith, lying second behind Margaret Tough (Falkirk) overnight, came through to the front with a repeat of her first-day 79 (40-39), which included a double bogey 6 at the fourth, for a total of 158.
She won by a single stroke from the strong-finishing Moira Thomson (North Berwick), the Scottish girls’ match-play champion of 1968, who had scores of 82 and 77 (38-39) for 159.
Fiona De Vries (St Rule), winner of the seniors’ stroke-play title in 2003, pipped Margaret Tough for the third best scratch prize. They both finished on 160 and Fiona had the better second round, a 79 to an 83.
Margaret Tough, out in 41 with a birdie at the fourth, was still in a position to keep the lead when she birdied the 13th but she bogeyed the 14th, double-bogeyed the 15th and had further bogeys at the 16th and 18th, to drop five shots - more than she was beaten by - over the last five holes for an 83.
Ann Smart (Banchory) won a three-way play-off against the others who finished on the 169 mark, Frances Neish (Forres) and Karen Ballantyne (Craigmillar Park), winner of the championship when it was played at Ballater in 2003, for the last of the 16 places in the match-play championship, to be decided over the next two days, also at Deeside.
Ann will play the new champion Mary Smith in the first tie off the tee at 8am Thursday morning. Noreen Fenton (Merchants of Edinburgh) won the over-60s scratch aggregate prize with a total of 164 (81-83) while Alex Glennie (Kilmarnock Barassie) won the best net aggregate category with a net total of 153, playing off five of a handicap.

Catriona Matthew dismayed at

being cut loose by VisitScotland

FROM THE SCOTSMAN.COM SPORTS WEBSITE
By MIKE AITKEN
As EventScotland announced a deal to bring the British Women's Open to Scotland, it emerged that North Berwick's Catriona Matthew has had her sponsorship contract as a golf ambassador terminated by another government agency, VisitScotland.
Currently 25th in the world – she's the leading Scottish golfer of either gender – Matthew expressed her dismay at being axed. "I was very pleased with the support they gave me over the past six years," she said, "but very disappointed, as a member of the last three Solheim Cup teams, to learn the contract has been terminated."
Matthew's management company, 110sport, were taken aback by the decision to ditch Scotland's leading female player at a time when their support for the professional women's game has been dramatically raised.
Brian Marchbank, 110sport's head of golf, had no complaint when the organisation also decided not to renew their backing for Steven O'Hara, who has struggled to produce his best form in recent seasons.
"But I do find it difficult to get my head around why they didn't want to continue working with Catriona," he said. "As well as being Britain's top golfer, she's also a fantastic ambassador for Scotland who is really good at what she does off the course as well. She gave a two-day clinic at Archerfield recently which was a tremendous success."
According to a source, VisitScotland, which has retained Sam Torrance as an ambassador, decided not to offer Matthew a new deal because she is primarily based in America.

Jessica leads English girls’ championship
PRESS RELEASE ISSUED BY ENGLISH WOMEN'S GOLF ASSOCIATION
Devon’s Jessica Bradley scored a one-under par 71 to take a three-shot lead after the first round of the English girls’ championship at Durham City.
Jessica, who is the Devon girls’ champion, had an eagle and four birdies in her round – including one birdie on the first and another on the 18th hole.
“It was really good fun and the lowest score I’ve ever done in major competition. I’m very pleased with my start because the course is quite tight and the greens are tricky,” added the 16-year-old from Tiverton.
Jessica is a member of the English Women’s Golf Association’s Select Southwest squad. She’s three shots clear of Cheshire’s Rachael Goodall (Heswall) who recently won the Harper Salver, the prestigious West Country scratch event.
A shot further back is a group of four players, including Durham girls’ champion Rebecca McGinley of South Moor, and Suffolk’s Heidi Baek (Felixstowe Ferry) who won the 2007 U15 title.
Essex golfer Georgina Kilby (Warren) provided one of the highlights of the day when she had a hole-in-one on the 130-yard 7th hole, where she used an eight iron. “It was a really good shot and I could see it all the way. My mum just leapt up in the air!” said Georgina. “It gave me a big adrenalin rush and made me play better.”
The 16-year-old had dropped three shots in the first four holes but she eventually came in with a creditable 78.
After the second qualifying round the top 32 players will qualify for the championship match-play. The next 32 will play in the second flight.

Lauren and Hayley share first-round
lead in English Under-15 girls

PRESS RELEASE ISSUED BY ENGLISH WOMEN'S GOLF ASSOCIATION
Warwickshire’s Lauren Taylor and Dorset’s Hayley Davis share the first round lead in the English Under-15 girls' championship at Ramside, Durham, after they both shot one-under par 73.
They hold a one-shot lead over Charlotte Thomas (Singapore Island) and are a further stroke ahead of a group of four players.
Lauren, 13, is fresh from a success in last week’s English stroke-play championship where she won the Under-18 title.
“I got a lot experience there from playing with the top players,” said Lauren, who is a member at Rugby Golf Club and of the English Women’s Golf Association’s Midlands B Select Squad.
In her opening round in this event she played the first 14 holes in immaculate style, with three birdies and 11 pars. On the 15th, a 140yd par-3, she flew the green with her eight-iron and her shot finished in the water, en route to a double bogey.
“I didn’t think I could hit it that far – but I bounced straight back with a birdie on the next hole,“ said Lauren, who then dropped a shot on the 18th. “I’m really pleased, but I’ve got to keep it going,” she said.
Hayley,15, was in very similar form. She birdied the first hole, eagled the par-5 fourth - and also stood on the 15th tee at three-under. She, too, double bogeyed the hole and then birdied the 16th before dropping another shot on the 17th.
Hayley plays at Ferndown and is a member of EWGA’s Select Southwest squad. She’s a reserve for England’s team for the girls’ international matches and recently recorded the best qualifying scores in the Southswst championship.
After the second qualifying round the field will be cut to the leading 36 players and ties who will play the 36-hole final rounds on Thursday.

Only two seniors break 80
in first round at Deeside

Deeside Golf Club's women's course proved too difficult a test for the 75 competitors in the first round of the 36-hole Scottish senior women's amateur stroke-play championship.
On a wind-free day, only two players - Margaret Tough (Falkirk) with a 77 and Tain's Mary Smith with a 79 - broke 80 over a course with a par of 72. The CSS was 76 (reduction only).
Some players blamed the pin placements, which were chosen by club professional Frank Coutts, for the high scores.
Margaret Tough, pictured right, who plays off three, had birdies at the second and sixth but a double bogey 6 at the 15th and other shots dropped at the fourth, ninth, 10th, 11th and 16th in halves of 37 (level par) and 40 (five over).
Mary Smith, a five-handicapper, also had a double bogey at the 15th in a weak finish which saw her drop four shots over the last four holes. She had one birdie to her credit, at the long seventh.
Defending champion Kathleen Sutherland (Royal Montrose), whose handicap has come down from 3 to 2 recently, had an inward half of 42 in compiling an 81.She had double bogey 6s at the 10th and 15th.
There will be a play-off if necessary to decide the stroke-play champion at the end of Wednesday's second round. The 16 players with the lowest 36-hole aggregates will qualify for the seniors' match-play championship over the same course on Thursday and Friday.
For the first time, there will be a play-off if necessary to produce the precise number of 16 qualifiers.

Charlotte Hindmoor wins Abraham Trophy
for most improved girl golf in England

PRESS RELEASE ISSUED BY ENGLISH WOMEN'S GOLF ASSOCIATION
County Durham’s Charlotte Hindmoor became England’s most improved girl golfer when she scored a narrow victory in the final of the Abraham Trophy at Ramside.
The 14-year-old from Blackwell Grange beat two other competitors on countback after all three girls tied on net scores of three-under 71.
Charlotte won by virtue of her last six holes, which she played in one-over par gross. The runner-up was Alice Lowe (Chevin) while Rosie Mist (Hayling) was third.
The final was contested by 21 players who qualified on the basis of handicap reduction. Charlotte has come down over the past year from 24 to 11 and is now looking forward to another cut.
"I was really determined to win - but I’m in a bit of a state of shock and can’t talk properly," she said after she received the trophy.
One of the first people to congratulate Charlotte was her grandfather, Bill Teasdale, who introduced her to golf when she was six.
"I love this course," said Charlotte, who will soon be back. She tees up tomorrow in the English girls’ Under-15 championship.

Scotland team for Vets' Jamboree
at Southerness, August 12 to 14

The Scotland team for the Veterans' Jamboree against England North, England Midlands and England South at Southerness Golf Club from August 12 to 14 is the same as the one that beat Ireland in Dublin in April:

Heather Anderson (Northern).
Lorna Bennett (Midlands).
Fiona de Vries (Midlands).
Helen Faulds (West).
Fiona Hunter (East).
Kathleen Sutherland (Northern).
Margaret Tough (Midlands).
Pamela Williamson (East).
Reserve:
May Hughes (West).

With some players needing to arrange time off from work etc, there was not enough time between the end of the Scottish seniors' championships at Deeside this week and the team going to Southerness to leave selection until the end of this week.

Editorial note from Colin Farquharson: If like me, you have wondered what the explanation is for the ever-increasing number of successful South Korean female professional golfers, the answer is surely contained in the following excellent, informative article by Daily Telegraph golf correspondent LEWINE MAIR. We have republished it from the Daily Telegraph.com sports website.

Why South Korea is producing so
many very good lady pro golfers

By LEWINE MAIR of the Daily Telegraph
Parents' input will have played as big a part as anything in the golfing development of South Korean competitors at this week's Ricoh Women's British Open at Sunningdale.
Some will have cajoled their offspring into practising, others will have gone in for a spot of bribery. Again, there are Koreans who will have applied rather more of a 'hands-on' approach. "I have never witnessed it myself," said Ho Yoon Park, from the South Korean Golf Association, "but some may have spanked them."
Speaking at the Ballantine's Championship held earlier this year on Jeju Island, Park admitted that South Korean parents had traditionally been hard on their daughters, tending to keep far closer tabs on them than would be the case in a European family.
Yet, for the most part, the girls who emerge from the South Korean school of golf are far from rebellious. Even if they were dragooned into spending eight or nine hours a day on the range in their formative years – probably at the expense of their education, and everything else – they end up driving themselves. It's in their blood.
No South Korean child is sent for private lessons, either for fun or to give parents a break. The parents test for talent and if, in their opinion, their boy or girl has it, they are prepared to spend their last penny on giving him or her every opportunity.
After all, the youngster could end up sufficiently well placed to keep them in their old age, just as they will have done their best to care for their mothers and fathers.
Ten to 15 years ago South Korean children were being pushed into musical careers, but when people came to see that golf offered a better chance of a lucrative living, there was a change of direction. And when further analysis demonstrated that daughters had a better chance than sons because the competition was not so great in the women's arena, they concentrated their resources on them.
Stephen Moriarty, who coaches at the David Leadbetter Academy in Seoul, is in awe of the discipline shown by his girl students, who range in age from 15 to 18. They are up at seven o'clock. They stretch, they run and they practise all morning. They might stop to drink from a bottle of water, but if Moriarty were to be diverted it would never occur to them to start chatting among themselves.
When, last winter, Moriarty and his team took these embryo professionals on a tournament-playing sortie to the Australian amateur tour, he wondered to what extent they would be influenced by more liberal sister competitors.
The answer was not at all. They went to bed at the usual time and, when asked what they would like to do as a treat on a free day, they chorused: "Play golf."
At the 1998 Women's British Open, Se Ri Pak was the only South Korean in the field. This week there are more than 30, and nine – headed by Inbee Park, the US Open champion – are in the top 20 on the LPGA's money list.
Things are quite different in the men's game where currently only two South Koreans, K?J Choi and Anthony Kim, play to a high level on the US PGA Tour. That there are families pushing girls ahead of boys will have had an obvious bearing on those statistics, but Choi and Kim have another explanation.
In their eyes, all the force-feeding – which is apparently even more extreme for boys than girls – has led to any number of promising juniors being burnt out before they turn professional. Kim would know. Although he and his father are now friends, they did not speak for two years as the young Kim – American-born but to a traditional South Korean family – was pushed to the point where he could take no more.
Thanks not least to Choi's and Kim's input, parents have been advised to water down their approach, even if, in the case of their daughters, they will obviously take some persuading. Why, after all, would they want to change a winning formula?
The extraordinary thing is that even if they were to agree to their daughters lopping an hour off their daily practice sessions, they would still be working twice as hard as girl golfers in the West – and doing nothing to solve the latter's growing quandary: should they do as the South Koreans in placing golf above all else, or should they continue to put a rather more balanced way of life above golf?
++Korea is a divided country with two governments, Korea and South Korea. They are not on particularly good terms with each other. All the female golfers come from South Korea, not North of the Korean Border.

Michele Thomson second reserve for place
in Ricoh British Women's Open field

Scottish champion and Curtis Cup player Michele Thomson came second in an 11-player play-off to be alternates (reserves) should anyone drop out of the championship field before or even on the day of the first round (Thursday) of the Ricoh Women's British Open.
In the marathon play-off, she parred the first and second holes and then birdied the 17th.
This means if two players pull out, then Michele Thomson steps in to fill the second vacancy at Sunningdale.
One spin-off from this is that Michele is entitled to practise over the championship course at Sunningdale on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Krystle only Scot to sparkle in

Women's British Open Qualifier

Curtis Cupper Krystle Caithness, one of seven Scots in the field for today's Final Qualifier, was the only Scot to sparkle and earn one of the 19 places up for grabs in the Ricoh Women's British Open, starting at Sunningdale Golf Club on Thursday.
The 19-year-old from Cellardyke, Fife, toughened up by regular competition on the US college circuit from September to May, deviated from par only three times in qualifying with two shots to spare in joint ninth place with an immaculate round of two-under-par 70 over the Blue Course at The Berkshire Golf Club.
Caithnbess birdied the long sixth in turning in one under par 35 and then dropped a shot at the short 10th before moving to two under for the day with an eagle 3 at the 452yd par-5 16th.
If the qualifier had been over only 17 holes, then Krystle's Curtis Cup team-mate Michele Thomson from the McDonald club, Ellon would have made it no problem. She birdied the fifth and had an eagle 3 at the 476yd par-5 sixth before dropping a shot at the eighth but turning in two-under-par 34.
A birdie at the 11th was the meat in a sandwich of bogeys at the 10th and 14th but all Michele needed was a par for a 71 to qualify with a shot to spare. Instead the Scot had a disastrous double-bogey 6 for a 73 - one shot too many to rub shoulders with Lorena Ochoa and Co come Thursday.
Ladies European Tour pro Clare Queen (The Carrick at Cameron House) failed by two with a two-over-par 74. She needed a great inward half to retrieve the situation after bogeying the first, third and eighth and turning in three-over-par 39. It looked for half-and-hour or so as if Clare would turn it all round because she birdied the 11th and 12th. But her fourth bogey of the day, at the 13th, made it almost mission impossible. She parred her way in.
A third Curtis Cup player in the field, 16-year-old Carly Booth from Comrie failed to make it with a 76 which included a double bogey 5 at the short (207yd) first and a triple bogey 7 at the 353yd 12th. She did have good runs - birdies at the fifth, sixth and ninth, and, too late, birdies at the 16th and 17th in 40 for the inward nine.
Perhaps competing in the European Young Masters at Chantilly, which did not finish until Saturday, and necessitating a flight from France to London in time to play at The Berkshire - with or without a practice round - was asking a little bit too much of a youngster.
Tour pros Kathryn Imrie from Monifieth and Lynn Kenny (Archerfield Links) both shot 77s while Auchterarder amateur Emily Ogilvy, who had cleared the recent first qualifying competition hurdle no problem, had a 78.
Kathryn could not get any inspiration on an inward half which had bogeys at the first, fourth, fifth and sixth. Out in 40, she did biredie the 12th and 14th but cancelled them out and some with bogeys at the 14th, 16th and 18th.
Lynn Kenny had a nightmare start - a triple bogey 8 at the long third and a double bogey 6 at the fifth in reaching the turn in five-over-par 41.
It was all academic after that and Lynn birdied the 11th and 16th but bogeyed the 12th and 17th in matching the inward par of 36.
Emily Ogilvy had her usual share of birdies, at the ninth, 12th, and 16th, but she also had too many shots dropped to entertain any hopes of surving. She had a double bogey 5 at the short fourth, a triple bogey 7 at the 14th and a double bogey 6 at the 15th in halves of 39.

Women's British Open to be played in
Scotland five times 2011-2020

EVENTSCOTLAND MEDIA RELEASE
Scotland's national events agency today unveiled a 10-year partnership with the Ladies' Golf Union and IMG to support the Ricoh Women's British Open.
Under the agreement, brokered by EventScotland, the Ricoh Women's British Open will be played in Scotland on at least five occasions between 2011 and 2020.
Making the announcement the First Minister of Scotland, the Rt Hon Alex Salmond MSP said: "The success of the 2007 Women's British Open here at St Andrews proved once again that there is nowhere better to stage major golfing events than here in Scotland, the home of golf.
"I am delighted to announce that EventScotland and the Ricoh Women's British Open have agreed a 10-year partnership which guarantees Scotland will host the Women's British Open Championship on at least five occasions between 2011 and 2020.
"This prestigious event is an excellent showcase for Scottish golf and tourism."
Following the enormous success of last year's Championship, the first professional women's tournament to be hosted over the Old Course, St Andrews and won by World No 1 Lorena Ochoa, EventScotland identified the Ricoh Women's British Open as an ideal platform to promote Scotland and its outstanding golf credentials around the world.]
The event delivered £7.5 million to the Scottish economy and received 356 hours and 30 minutes of global broadcast coverage across 26 international broadcasters.
Paul Bush from EventScotland commented: "We are delighted to have secured the right for Scotland to stage the Ricoh Women's British Open five times during our ten year partnership.
"The success of the 2007 Championship at St Andrews demonstrated yet again that Scotland is the perfect stage for major golf events. Scotland boasts so many of the world's best golf courses and facilities and the Ricoh Women's British Open is another opportunity to showcase these fantastic assets.
"EventScotland is the lead agency as Scotland prepares to host The Ryder Cup in 2014. A key part of this work as we build to that year is securing professional events that broaden interest and participation in the sport and today's announcement, and our investment of £600,000 to secure this deal, underlines this commitment."
The Ricoh Women's British Open was founded by the Ladies' Golf Union in 1976. Steeped in history and the only ladies' pro-golf Major to take place outside of the USA, the 2008 event is set to be one of the highlights on this year's golfing calendar, with 144 players from around the world competing for a total prize fund of £1,050,000 at Sunningdale later this week.
The Ricoh Women's British Open has been co-sanctioned by the LPGA and LET since 1994 and gained Major status in 2001. The event is managed on behalf of the Ladies' Golf Union by IMG, the world's largest sports marketing company.
Shona Malcolm, Ladies' Golf Union's CEO, observed, "We are delighted to be working with EventScotland and are very much looking forward, in partnership with them, to continuing to grow and develop the Ricoh Women's British Open year on year."

Alexis Thompson wins US
girls championship at 13

Make a note of the name Alexis Thompson. The same age - 13 - as Ireland's Maguire twin sisters - all three will be playing Curtis Cup golf within two or four years, Alexis for the United States, Lisa and Leona for Great Britain & Ireland.
Alexis (pictured right) already has a golfing CV as long as her strong right arm.
On Sunday, at Hartford Golf Club, West Hartford, Connecticutt, she added an under-18 "major," the United States girls' championship.
Alexis beat another 13-year-old - very good golfers seem to be coming through at an earlier age, don't they? - Karen Chung 5 and 4 in the 36-hole final to become the second youngest winner in the US girls' championship's 60-year history.
Last year Alexis became the youngest qualifier in US Women’s Open history, and qualified again this year.
At 13 years, 5 months and 17 days, Thompson is only two months older than 1999 champion Aree Song Wongluekiet.
This was also the first time two 13-year-olds had met in a US girls' championship final.
Though Thompson and Chung share the same age, the championship final highlighted their completely different playing styles.
Thompson took full advantage of her length. She consistently outdrove her opponent by 40 or 50 yards.
The petitie Chung, who has a great short game and an admirable never-say-die attitude, only took up golf three years ago and has made amazingly quick progress to get to this level. But she threatened Thompson only briefly.
Two down after 18, Chung rallied and was one down after five holes of the afternoon session. But Thompson quickly reversed the momentum, making a 35ft birdie putt on the par-3 24th and a winning par at the next.
At the par-5 28th, Thompson played her shot of the final - a seven-wood from 200yd range that stopped 12 feet from the hole. She holed it for a winning birdie.

Californian Mo Martin scores second

victory on US Duramed Futures Tour

Mo Martin of Altadena, California claimed her second professional victory, firing a five-under-par 67 in the final round to win by four strokes at the $80,000 USI Championship at Beaver Meadow, Concord, New Hampshire
.
Martin finished the tournament at 12-under-par 204, four shots ahead of runner-up Gerina Mendoza (69) of Roswell, New Mexico, who closed at eight-under-par 208.
Finishing third was rookie Whitney Myers (67) of York, Pennsylvania, who finished at six-under-par 210, while Maru Martinez (70) of Maracaibo, Venezuela, and LeAnna Wicks (69) of Brighton, Michigan., tied for fourth with a three-day score of five-under-par 211.
Scattered thunderstorms hit the Concord area overnight and produced nearly an inch of rain, but skies were sunny as final-round play began off split tees at 7:30 a.m. this morning.
The soft greens played right into Martin's hands and a putter she affectionately calls "Mona" as she earned a check of $11,200 to move into 10th on the season money list. As an added bonus, Martin was also presented with a Bulova diamond watch and commemorated with flowers between the 16th and 17th holes on Beaver Meadow Golf Course for her win.
Martin finished off her second win on the Duramed Futures Tour by sinking a 30ft birdie putt as fans surrounding the 18th green erupted. It was a storybook ending for Martin, who was embraced by family and friends walking off the course, led by her mother and 96-year-old grandfather, Lincon.
"This feels like a fairytale," Martin said. "It still hasn't sunk in. I've been just trying to take it one day at a time, because I've learned nothing comes if you expect it."
One day after setting the course record at Beaver Meadow with a six-under-par 66 in Saturday's second round, Martin broke the three-year tournament aggregate record by three strokes, previously held by Tour alum Charlotte Mayorkas of Las Vegas and her 54-hole score of nine-under-par 207 in 2006.
Martin sent a text message to Mayorkas to let her friend know she broke the record and was given a celebratory shower when fellow players poured water over her on the 18th green.
It represented the second win on the Duramed Futures Tour for Martin, who won the 2007 El Paso Golf Classic in a sudden-death play-off with darkness approaching. She was relieved she finished this win in daylight.
"I feel like I had time to sleep on the lead," Martin said. "I'm not going to say this one is more legitimate, but it feels more like the ending of a golf tournament."
Martin opened her round with a birdie on the first hole to move to 8-under par. She added two more birdies on the front nine and didn't slow down making the turn, leading by as many as four strokes over Mendoza with birdies on No. 12 and 14, before they both made bogey on the par-4, 15th hole.
Mendoza made birdie on her second hole to keep Martin's lead at two strokes. She trimmed the deficit to one stroke with a birdie on No. 5, but that was the closest she would get to Martin the rest of the day. Mendoza still recorded four birdies and one bogey that resulted in a career-best finish to earn $8,000.
"I didn't want to force things because birdies turn into bogeys," Mendoza said. "I was just trying to stick within myself and play my game."
Competing in just her third professional event, Myers put together a bogey-free round with five birdies and finished in sole possession of third. In her first two events, Myers tied for 13th at the CIGNA Golf Classic in Bloomfield, Conn., and tied for fifth last week in Syracuse, New York State at the Alliance Bank Golf Classic. She tied Martin and Jessica Carafiello of Coral Springs, Fla., for the low round of the day with a 67 (-5).
"It's been absolutely surreal," said Myers, who tied for 18th at the Duramed Futures Tour Qualifying Tournament in November. "I knew I had it in me and I had made it a goal to make the cut in the events I played in, but to be doing this well -- I couldn't see it coming."
The Tour is idle this coming week before heading to London, Kentucky for the Falls Auto Group Classic from August 8 to 10.
Tournament weather: A mix of clouds and sun with a high temperature of 81 degrees and winds blowing southwest up to 15 mph.

Helen Alfredsson wins play-off for
third Evian Masters title

FROM THE LADIES' EUROPEAN TOUR WEBSITE
Helen Alfredsson claimed her third Evian Masters title with a birdie at the third extra hole of a sudden death play-off against South Korea’s Na-Yeon Choi and Angela Park of Brazil at Evian-les-Bains, France today.
The 43-year-old Swede birdied the par-5 18th hole three extra times to earn her 20th worldwide victory. Park was eliminated with a par at the first extra hole while Choi took 5 as she played the 18th for the fourth time in a row.
Last year’s European Solheim Cup captain, Alfredsson came from four shots behind the overnight leader Park, posting a final round of five-under-par 67 for a 273, 15-under-par total. She birdied the last two holes in regulation to force the play-off.
After securing her first title for five years, with a two foot birdie putt, an energetic Alfredsson jumped in the air and told reporters: “I really am too old for this. I keep saying that but this is really too far to go.”
Her closest competitors, Park and Choi, were aged 19 and 20 respectively. In this case experience and a fighting spirit paid off.
“I can't even describe it in words. Like I said so many times this week, this tournament is so special for me,” said Alfredsson. “Look where it's been. It's an amazing golf tournament. It's a very emotional event for me. I've had nothing but great memories here. I just love this place. Somebody's looking after me for this to be my next win.”
Alfredsson was the first ever winner of the Evian Masters in 1994 and claimed the title for a second time in 1998. Ten years later, in the tournament’s 15th edition, she posted rounds of 72, 63 (which was a course record), 71 and 67 for the victory and first prize of US$487,500.
“At this point the satisfaction of winning and making your putt or making some putts that I made today, there is nothing, there is no money in the world that can pay for that,” said Alfredsson.
“I worked so hard, especially last winter I worked out. Every day I had a fitness coach, I was trying to get fit. I was working very hard on my golf game, and I absolutely got nothing out of it.
“This year, obviously because of my injuries they found what it was. I didn't work out as hard. I mean, I work out five days a week, so it's not like I'm not working out, but it was a different way. "I saw progress. I started getting my feeling back in my right arm. Then I had to figure out the swing to work with that.
“You never know if you're going to win, obviously. Especially, time is running out a little bit for me. But I knew I was playing really well. I was third in greens regulation in the States almost all year. So I knew I was hitting the right shots. It was really about connecting to make the putt."
Alfredsson began her final round with a bogey at the par-4 first hole, where she hit her tee shot right into the trees and had to chip out to the fairway. However she bounced back with three birdies on the front nine at the second, third and ninth holes.
She was five strokes behind Choi after three-putting the 13th for bogey, but then the South Korean dropped shots at holes 15 and 16.
“I just got a little bit of feeling that it was within the reach. She played amazingly well. I thought my course record was going to fly out the window today, because she was just making birdies and they were going so well. And, you know, she (Choi) was 17 under very quickly,” said Alfredsson.
Choi, a rookie on the US LPGA Tour seeking her maiden victory, posted a final round of six-under 66 and was feeling numb after missing her six foot birdie putt at the third extra hole to lose the play-off.
“Right now I don’t feel. I cannot think of anything,” said Choi. “I feel a little disappointed that I was very nervous. I always thought that I could do it.”
Park, a second year player on the LPGA, admitted that she had also been a little nervous in the play-off.
“My ball faded a little bit to the right. I had no shot to the green, so I had no choice but to lay up,” she said. “It's just going to take a lot of patience (to get my first win). I'm going to be out here for, I don't know, 10, 15 years. I don't think I'm going to let one tournament let me down.”
Mhairi McKay finished with a 76, her worst round of the four, for a total of three-over-par 291 for which she earned 6,368 Euros.

On a still and warm day on Gullane Number 1, eight competitors in the Mackie Bowl shot sub-par in one of their two rounds in this SLGA Order of Merit counting event. One of them, the overall Mackie Bowl winner, not only shot two sub-par rounds when she first equalled, then broke the 12 year old course record (set by Janice Moodie).
Pamela Pretswell’s bogey-free morning round of 67 was followed by a superb 66 in the afternoon which only had one bogey amongst a glut of birdies and an eagle.
Pamela, who is a member of Bothwell Castle Golf Club and reigning Scottish Universities champion, had a two-round aggregate of 133 which was 15 under par and nine shots better than second placed Kylie Walker of Buchanan Castle who shot a second round 68.
In third place was Lesley Atkins, playing out of Minto, who is also a member of Gullane Ladies.
Lesley’s second round scratch 70 ( which meant she played eight below her handicap!) meant she pipped Louise Kenney (Pitreavie GC) who had the same 145 aggregate score.
Two other players – Katy McNicoll of Carnoustie Ladies and Jane Turner of Craigielaw, finished with sub-par scratch aggregates of 147.
Not all competitors found the going so easy as the CSS for both rounds remained at 74.
Speaking with a delighted Pamela before the presentation of prizes, she said she knew that she had been in good form recently and it was a question of remaining patient and waiting for the putts to drop.
A member of Scotland’s squad in the recent European women's team championship, Pamela said she had learned a lot from that event in Sweden and although she knew she was scoring well she was not keeping tabs on her actual score.
After shooting such a good first round score she just tried to go out with the same mindset in the afternoon and do more of the same.
Her accuracy from tee to green was rewarded when so many putts dropped. Pamela also wanted to give her caddy, her father, a special mention as he never got a club wrong on her way to shooting the two lowest sub-par scores in her career.
