Women's World Cup moved from
start to end of 2009 season

Officials from the Women’s World Cup of Golf, the Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) and the Ladies European Tour (LET) have made a joint decision to pursue moving the date of the 2009 event to the end of the season instead of opening the season with it in January as has been tradition for the past three years.
While the exact date for the 2009 event has not yet been finalised, the event organisers and the Tours will look to stage the event towards the end of the season to create the best possible chance of attracting the world’s top players to South Africa.
Carolyn Bivens, Commissioner of the LPGA, said: “The LPGA is committed to making it as easy as possible for the top players to be available to participate and represent their countries at this prestigious event. The Women’s World Cup of Golf has a wonderful spirit along with a charitable component for the local community.
Alexandra Armas, Executive Director of the LET, said: “Playing in South Africa at the end of the season will provide a wonderful finale for both tours. The players love going to South Africa – the courses are world class and the players receive legendary hospitality.”
Tania Fourie, CEO of the Women’s World Cup of Golf, said: “This tournament gives us a wonderful opportunity to showcase the magnificence of South Africa as well as showcase some of the best golf in the world. The four-year-old tournament is gaining stature every year and becoming an indelible part of the global annual calendar.”

Kelsey MacDonald wins SLGA
girls' order of merit
title by big margin

Scottish Under-21 girls champion Kelsey MacDonald has won the Scottish Ladies Golfing Association girls’ order of Merit title for 2008 by just about as big a margin as Kylie Walker (Buchanan Castle) won the women’s merit table.
Kelsey lost to Carly Booth in the Scottish Under-18 girls’ match-play championship at Alyth, the week before her great win in the Under-21 stroke-play championship at Powfoot.
She also won the Scottish schoolgirls’ title for the first time at Inchmarlo Golf Centre, Banchory in June.
Kelsey’s family home could hardly be closer to the first tee of the Nairn Dunbar golf course. Her ambition is to play for Great Britain & Ireland in the 2012 Curtis Cup match which will be staged at Nairn Golf Club.
She is a full Scotland international team player and is pictured above, by Cal Carson Golf Agency, in action during this year's women's home internationals at Wrexham.
Kelsey, who turned 18 in early October, is now a student at Stirling University. She has a twin brother.
Rachael Watton (Mortonhall) was runner-up in the SLGA girls' order of merit and third place went to Lesley Atkins (Minto), this year's Scottish Under-14 girls' champion.

Kirstie and Kelly
win Daily Mail
Foursomes' Grand Final at Dalmahoy

PRESS RELEASE ISSUED BY ENGLISH WOMEN'S GOLF ASSOCIATION
Northamptonshire’s Kirstie Jennings and Kelly Hanwell – two key figures in English women’s golf – have won the Daily Mail Women's Foursomes Grand Final at Dalmahoy, near Edinburgh.
Kirstie is the compliance manager for the England Golf Partnership and the lead child protection officer for the English Women’s Golf Association. Kelly is a regional development officer for EWGA and the English Golf Union.
The pair, who play at Northamptonshire County, took the women’s title when they got the better of both the field and the wet and windy weather.
“It was the worst conditions I have played in,” said Kirstie. “It was raining, freezing cold and the wind was howling. We had our own personal squeegee operator for the final round!”
Because of the weather the title was decided for the first time on a Stableford format – and Kirstie and Kelly won through with a strong finish.
After 15 holes there was only one point separating the leading four women’s pairs but the Northamptonshire partnership pulled away from the field with a birdie-par-bogey finish. They amassed 32 points and were three clear of their closest rivals.
“We were really chuffed to win it after going through all that,” said Kirstie, who was a losing finalist in 2005.
Both Kirstie and Kelly are past winners of the Northamptonshire county championship and Kelly has also been the Midland ladies’ title-holder. They have played foursomes together for their county since 1999.
The Daily Mail men's foursomes title was also won by an English pairing - Great Torrington's Tony Gooch and Mark Hill.

Ayrshire exile David Addison from Stewarton, a senior-year student at the University of Akron, Ohio, finished tied 34th in the Xavier Invitational college tournament at the Oasis Club, Loveland in Ohio.
David, a former Scotland boy international and a member at Kilmarnock Barassie, had rounds of 70, 76 and 73 for a three-over-par total of 219 over the 6921yd, par-72 course.
The individual winner with phenomenal scoring was Mike Van Sickle (Marquette University) with a 17-under-par total of 199, made up of rounds of 64, 68 and 67.

Calum Grant top scores for D&E
College in West Virginia

Calum Grant from Linlithgow, a freshman student at Davis & Elkins College, West Virginia, top-scored for his college team, despite a 29-over-par total of 245 in the WVIAC Championship at Stonewall Resort in Roanoke, West Virginia this week.
In what must have been rough weather conditions - the best second-round score by anyone was a six-over-par 78, Calum had rounds of 85, 82 and 78 to finish in joint 20th position.
This is one of Calum's first appearances on the US colllege golf circuit after the NCAA administration refused to give him clearance to play. The reasons are not clear on this side of the Atlantic.
Team-mate Alasdair Forsythe from Glasgow, also a freshman, finished joint 45th on 255 with scores of 86, 91 and 78.
Matt Glissy (Fairmont State University) was the individual winner with scores of 72, 78 and 72 for six-over 222. He won by seven strokes.
Davis & Elkins College finished 14th of 15 in the team event.
That's the last competitive event for Calum and Alasdair until the spring. The US college golf season has a winter hiatus, which seems to start rather early, i.e. before the end of October, and go on a bit long, i.e. no events until late March-early April.
But the Scots have something to look forward to before that. The golf squad have been promised a trip to Orlando, Florida.

Jordan Findlay's nightmare
in Tennessee - a 93 with
only three par figures

Former British boys champion Jordan Findlay from Fraserburgh, in his fourth and final year as a golf scholarship student at East Tennessee State University, was lying last in a field of 75 at the end of the first round of the Bank of Tennessee @ The Ridges college tournament at The Ridges Country Club, Jonesborough in Tennessee.
Findlay, 20, pictured right by Cal Carson Golf Agency, had an embarrassingly-high score of 21-over-par 93 in which he had only three pars in halves of 45-48 against the scorecard of 36-36 over a 7,147yd course.
Jordan had one triple bogey, four double bogeys and 10 single bogeys.
Team-mate Rhys Enoch, a Welsh international from Cornwall, did rather better at the other end of the leaderboard. He had a one-under-par 71 to share second place with eight other players, one behind leader Matt Hill (North Carolina State).
Chris Paisley (Tennessee University) from Newcastle was in joint 10th place with a par-matching 72.
Scottish boys' match-play champion Michael Stewart from Troon, a freshman student at East Tennessee State and team-mate Seamus Power from Waterford both scored 73 to be joint 20th.
Stewart had birdies at the fifth, 10th and 14th but cancelled them out with four bogeys.
Welshman Jason Shufflebotham from Prestatyn, a sophomore student at Alabama-Birmingham, was back in joint 31st place after a 74.

KRYSTLE CAITHNESS SHOCK
She's coming home from USA and

will enter LET Q School in January

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Curtis Cup Scot Krystle Caithness, the star player of the University of Georgia women's golf team, has stunned the Bulldogs' coaching staff and fellow players by quitting college halfway through her sophomore (second) year.
The 19-year-old from Cellardyke, Fife - the family have moved home to Cupar this year - is returning to Scotland immediately. She intends to enter the Ladies European Tour Qualifying School at La Manga in January.
Caithness, who played very well for Scotland in the recent women's world amateur team championship in Australia earlier this month, said that homesickness was the reason for her out-of-the-blue decision.

"I really do miss home at this time and don't feel like I can carry on in any way that will help my team to move forward.
"I will miss everyone. I was extremely grateful for the opportunity I received here are Georgia. At this time I have to do what's best for me."
Georgia women's head coach Kelley Hester commented: "Krystle has been a valuable member of our team and we will certainly mniss her. We wish hwer the best as she returns home to pursue a professional golf career."
Krystle was 23rd in the most recent Golfweek nationwide women's college rankings. Georgia University are ranked fourth.

Kylie Walker wins SLGA Order
of Merit by more than 1,000
points from Roseanne Niven

Kylie Walker (Buchanan Castle) has won the Scottish Ladies Golfing Association's Order of Merit for the 2008 season.
Highlights of a season in which Kylie produced a clutch of high finishes would have to be victory in the St Rule Trophy and being beaten in a play-off by Roseanne Niven for the British women's open amateur stroke-play championship at Malone GC, near Belfast.
Kylie finished with 3250 points, more than 1,000 ahead of her "British" conqueror, Roseanne Niven (Crieff).
Considering she missed the early-season events because she is a student at the University of California-Berkeley, Roseanne did very well indeed to amass 2187pt. Her highlights were the aforementioned triumph in the British stroke-play and being the only British or Irish player to reach the semi-finals of the British women's open amateur championship at North Berwick, having earlier beaten Spain's Azahara Munoz, winner of the American women's college circuit's NCAA championship.
Aberdeen student Laura Murray from Alford came third with 2030pt.

ROUND-UP OF SCOTS ON US COLLEGE CIRCUITS

Adam Lindsay lying sixth in
Midwest Championship ...
and he has a long wait
for the final two rounds

Banchory's Adam Lindsay, pictured on right, a student at Iowa Wesleyan University, will start the final two rounds of the Midwest Collegiate Conference championship in sixth place - in the spring!
It must be a unique tournament that has its first two rounds in October and its last two rounds several months later, but that's the format.
Adam had a pair of 73s for two-over-par 146 over the 6987yd, par-72 course at Finkbine Golf Club, Iowa City. The leader is Adam White (St Ambrose) with 68 and 71 for 139.

JAMIE BLAKE'S 71 OVER PGA NATIONAL
Jamie Blake from Arbroath, a student at Post University, New York State, finished in a share of 44th place in the Nova Shark Invitational college tournament over the PGA National course at Palm Beach Gardens, Florida.
The event was abbreviated by rain to two rounds and Jamie just wasn't himself with a first-round 84 but his second round of one-under-par 71 was the second lowest return of the day. To score that low over such a famous course (6,806yd from the tees they were using) was a fine achievement.
Another Post University Scot, David McGregor from Helensburgh, scored 83 and 81 for 164 and a share of 66th place.
Winner was Chris Carlin (Barry University) with 70 and 72 for 142.

JACQUELINE TOP SCORES FOR GRAND CANYON

It was a tough women's course, measuring "only" 5816yd but with a par of 73.
Jacqueline finished six shots behind the winner, Chelsea Helget (Sonoma State) who shot 75 and 77 for 152.
Grand Canyon University finished third in the team event, their third top-three finish of the autumn college golf season.

ROSS LEEDS MAKES TOP 20 IN TEXAS
Ross Leeds from Glenfarg, a student at Odessa College, Texas finished 18th in the Odessa College Inviational over a long course of some 7,338yd with a par of 72.
Ross shot 78, 72 and 73 for a creditable seven-over-par 223 total.
Team-mate Mark Penny took the individual honours with rounds of 69, 72 and 70 for five-under-par 211.
Odessa finished second to Midland College in the team event.

Another good effort by
freshman Nicky
Maddison in Alabama

Newcastle's Nicky Maddison, a freshman student at Hutchinson Community College, Kansas, gave another sound performance in the 2008 NJCAA National Preview tournament at Hampton Cove, Huntsville in Alabama.
Over the course where the 2009 NJCAA divisional championship will be played next May, Nicky scored 73, 72 and 72 for a one-over-par total of 217, which earned him a share of sixth place in a field of 90 behind the winner, Matt Law (Western Texas) with 69, 69 and 72 for six-under-210.
Nicky did not get much support from his team-mates because, despite his noble effort, Hutchinson finished 13th of 18 in the team event, some 39 shots behind the winners.

Holly Clyburn and Solheim Cup captain Alison Nicholas after their match at Woodhall Spa.

Rising star Holly Clyburn joins Mary

McKenna among early entries

for February's Spanish Festival

Holly Clyburn, one of the brightest young talents on the English amateur scene, has joined Curtis Cup captain Mary McKenna among the early entries for the 2009 Hacienda del Alamo Women's Winter Festival at the five-star resort in the south-east Spanish region of Murcia.
Four events make up a busy programme at Hacienda del Alamo Golf Resort from Thursday, Febuary 12 to Tuesday, February 17.
Holly, who lives at Cleethorpes, Lincolnshire and is a member of Woodhall Spa Golf Club, has entered the 36-hole Hacienda del Alamo Ladies Open on the closing Monday and Tuesday of the 2009 Festival.
She will have her 18th birthday during the week before the Festival starts and she will be hoping to produce a performance to impress the Great Britain & Ireland selection committee who will be monitoring scores from far and near in the early months of 2009 as they work their way towards a team of nine for the Vagliano Trophy match against the Continent of Europe in Hamburg, to be named after the British women's open amateur championship in June.
The Hacienda del Alamo Women's Winter Festival is one of the few opportunities for prospective selection candidates to put some competitive results on the board - and sharpen up their game at the resort's five-star practice facilities - early in 2009.
Holly Clyburn helped England to win the girls' home internationls title at Panmure Golf Club, near Carnoustie this past summer and she was also in the England team which beat Wales and Scotland in the 2008 schoolgirls international matches.
Holly also played in a top-level exhibition match which launched the Single Figure Golfer Challenge Cup over her home course at Woodhall Spa.
In a Ryder Cup-style format, the "Single Figure Golfers" played "The Pros," a team consisting of former Ryder Cup, Walker Cup and Solheim Cup players, including Paul Way, Gordon Brand junior, Steve Richardson, Alison Nicholas, Roger Champman, Jim Payne, Ricky Willson, Philip Walton, John McHenry and Gary Wolstenholme.
Holly showed her class in partnering Richard Latham to victory against current Solheim Cup captain Alison Nicholas and Gary Wolstenholme, now a professional but arguably the most successful English male amateur over the past two decades.
In a match of high quality, Holly staged a grandstand finish to birdie the 17th and 18th for victory in the opening day's four-balls.
In the Day 2 foursomes, Holly partnered Liam Hannan to an 8 and 7 win over the very experienced pairing of Paul Way and Roger Chapman.
In the afternoon singles, Holly was drawn against Alison Nicholas and their tie went all the way to the 18th green before Alison won.
For the record, the Pro Challenge team won by 14.5 to 5.5.
Just a reminder of the 2009 Hacienda del Alamo Women's Winter Festival programme (every competitor is guaranteed a free practice round over the Dave Thomas-designed course which Ryder Cup player Miguel Angel Jimenez represents on the European Tour).

Great Scott! Anna makes good

comeback from elbow injury

Anna Scott, pictured right, from Consett, Co Durham, a final-year student at Georgia State University, has made an excellent comeback from an elbow injury which ruled her out of the first two tournaments of the new American college season.

After finishing fifth in the Starmount Classic at Greensboro, North Carolina, Anna's joint 12th performance in a field of 102 players for the Lady Pirate Intercollegiate tournament at Greenville Country Club, North Carolina, this week helped Georgia State (862) win the team event by the resounding margin of 37 strokes from East Carolina with Miami a distant third on 913 in a field of 20 teams.

Anna's opening rounds of 76 and 77 over the 5,939yd, par-71 course left her in joint 20th position with one day to go. Then a good effort of 73 for a total of 226 moved her up eighth places in the final standings behind South African team-mate Iliska Verwey who shot 75, 678 and 73 for 216.

Sinead O'Sullivan (East Tennessee State) from Galway came joint 40th with 78, 77 and 78 for 234, two shots ahead of team-mate and twice former Welsh girls champion Lucy Gould from Bargoed. Lucy scored 81, 76 and 79 to finished joint 51st.

Laura Holmes from Co Mayo, Ireland shared 84th place with 86, 84 and 78 for 248.

East Tennessee State (927) finished ninth in the team event.
Last week, Curtis Cup player Jodi Ewart (New Mexico) from Catterick, Yorkshire hit form late in the Stanford Intercollegiate tournament in California with a two-under-par 69 over the 6,092yd course, over which Tiger Woods used to play when he was a Stanford student.
Jodi finished on 215, rocketing up through the field from joint 41st after rounds of 70 and 76 to a final placing of joint 14th in a good-class field of 90 players, including runner-up Caroline Masson (Oklahoma State), German-born winner of the Spanish women's open amateur title earlier this year, and third-placed Belen Mozo (Southern California), the Spaniard who won both the British girls' and women's open amateur titles at Northern Ireland venues in 2006.
Lizette Salas (Southern California) won the Stanford Intercollegiate individual honours with 66, 72 and 68 for 206, two shots ahead of Masson and three clear of Mozo.
Roseanne Niven (California), playing as an individual, finished joint 74th with scores of 81, 74 and 75 for 230.
UCLA (844) won the team event from Southern California (847) with Stanford (857) third.

Rebecca Watson Named
Lady Vol Athlete Of
The Week

FROM THE UNIVERSITY OF TENNESSEE WEBSITE
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – After a spectacular weekend in which she carded career-bests and led the Tennessee women’s golf team to its best finish of the season at its home tournament, sophomore Rebecca Watson was named the Lady Vol Athlete of the Week.
The Edinburgh, Scotland, native recorded her best round (72), tournament total (219) and finish (t15th) of her collegiate career, while leading the Lady Vols to an eighth-place finish at the 2008 Mercedes-Benz Women’s Collegiate Championships this weekend at Fox Den Country Club in Knoxville.
Watson opened the 12th annual home tournament by firing an even-par 72 as UT grabbed a surprise six-shot lead on day one of the tournament. She wrapped up the championships with a three-day total of 72-73-74=219 (+3), seven strokes better than her previous best set at the 2007 Las Vegas Showdown, where she also had recorded her previous top round (73).
For the first time in her career, Watson was the top Lady Vol finisher, tying for 15th, as the Orange and White carded 890, its best this season by over 20 strokes.
Overall, Watson carded three of her top five rounds as a collegian and made seven birdies on the 6,058-yard course.
Making Watson’s performance even more remarkable, her three rounds at the tournament were her first rounds to count for the team score this season. At the Cougar Classic from Sept. 14-16 she posted 82-79-85=246 (+30) as UT’s fifth player and from Sept. 26-28 she recorded 81-79-83=243 (+27) as Tennessee’s individual representative at the Mason Rudolph tournament.
Watson, however, was able to provide a breakthrough tournament just when the Lady Vols needed it. With UT’s top finisher at the Mason Randolph, junior Diana Cantu, competing for Mexico at the World Amateur Team Championships, Watson stepped up with three steady rounds to lead the Orange and White to its best finish and best score of the season.

Vikki Laing wins $15,000 as runner-up
in season-sending Futures Tour event

Last week’s Duramed Futures Tour's final season-ending tournament, the inaugural $150,000 Duramed Invitational, came down to a “Battle of the Vickies.”
Vikki Laing from Musselburgh held a two-stroke lead after 11 holes in the final round over Vicky Hurst from Florida but in the end, Hurst, the rookie, prevailed by one shot at 211 (-2) at Chateau Elan’s par-71 Chateau Course.
“It’s the last tournament of the season, so it’s special,” said Hurst, 18, who carded rounds of 71-69-71 for an unofficial payday of $21,000. “It’s not for rankings or anything like that. It’s just my last chance to see the other players and staff members and it’s pretty special to walk away with a win.”
Hurst and Laing each matched identical rounds of three birdies and three bogeys on Sunday, but Laing, who was a tournament winner in 2007, made her three birdies on the first 10 holes. She struggled with her putting on the back nine.
“Just coming down the stretch, I didn’t hole anything and you need one or two of them,” said Laing, who finished second at 1-under-par 212 to earn $15,000 as runner-up.
The turning point in the final round came on the par-three 16th hole, where both players had to scramble for par. Laing chipped 13 feet past the hole and didn’t get up and down, while Hurst drained a 20-footer to save par. On what she called “probably the toughest hole all year,” Hurst hit her 9-iron approach to seven feet on the 338-yard uphill 17th hole, and then converted for birdie. Hurst gave a shot back on the 18th when her approach landed 18 feet above the hole, but her first putt rolled six feet past the cup, rendering a three-putt finish. Still, Hurst was safe by one shot.
“She has a great golf swing and she rolls the ball well on the green,” said Laing of Hurst. “She’s doing all the right things. She’s going to do just fine at the next level.”

Vikki runner up to Vicky in Duramed Invitational

From the Duramed Futures Tour website

Vicky Hurst Collects Fifth Tour Victory, Player Of The Year Honors In Braselton

BRASELTON, Ga., Oct. 19, 2008 - Rookie Vicky Hurst of Melbourne, Fla., carded an even-par 71 to win her fifth tournament and close out the 2008 Duramed FUTURES Tour season at the inaugural $150,000 Duramed Invitational.

Hurst held off a final-round charge from 2007 Tour winner Vikki Laing (71) of Musselburgh, Scotland, to finish with a three-day total of 211 (-2). Laing ended one stroke back with a three-round score of 212 (-1).

Hurst claimed the top $21,000 paycheck and received respective trophies for Tour Rookie of the Year and Player of the Year honors. She was awarded an additional $5,000 from Duramed for her season accomplishments. It counts as another official win for Hurst, but monies earned at the Duramed Invitational were unofficial.

"I wanted to play a great tournament and I just tried to stay focused all week," Hurst said. "This was my chance to prove to myself that I've worked hard all season."

It was anything but a flashy final round for the five-time Tour winner, as she mixed in three birdies and three bogeys, but the timing couldn't have been better as it became a "Battle of the Vickies" down the stretch.

Hurst broke a late tie at 2-under par with Laing on the 16th hole, holing a 20-foot par putt that proved pivotal as the last three holes unfolded. She would follow with a seven-foot birdie putt on the potentially hazardous 17th hole to take a two-shot lead and seal her fifth win.

"When I made the (20 foot) putt (for par) on No. 16, I felt like I was going to win," Hurst said. "After I made that putt, I felt like I was ready for the LPGA Tour. The 17th hole is probably the toughest hole we've had to play all year."

Laing gave Hurst all she could handle in Sunday's final round, taking a two-shot lead on No. 11 after a birdie on the 10th hole. Hurst made up the deficit after Laing made bogey on No. 14 and 16.

"Coming down the stretch I didn't hole anything and you need one or two of those," said Laing, winner of the 2007 Gettysburg Championship. "She (Vicky) has a great golf swing and rolls the ball well on the green. She's doing all the right things."

Added Hurst, "She (Vikki) played really well and drained some tough putts while making great shots all day."

It was a year to be chronicled for the 18-year-old Hurst, who won tournaments in McAllen, Texas, Decatur, Ill., Hammond, Ind., Bloomfield, Conn., and Braselton, Ga. She shattered the Tour's single-season earnings mark previously held by Tour alum and LPGA Tour member Beth Bauer and officially recorded nine top-10 finishes in 13 events, and a total of 10 top-10 finishes in all 14 events she entered.

The Duramed FUTURES Tour is saying goodbye to one of its most accomplished players in its 28-year history, but the memories are forever etched in Hurst's mind as she prepares to move on to the LPGA Tour in 2009.

"For it to be my last Duramed FUTURES Tour event and see the staff members and the players for the last time, it was pretty special to get a win," Hurst said. "The journey isn't over for me. I want to stay focused on the future and not look back in the past."

The special on-course chemistry with her mother and caddie, Koko, continued to the very end as Vicky thanked her best friend at the awards ceremony.

"Mom and I are a great team," Vicky said. "I didn't do it -- we did it."

Scotland win the Eisenhower Trophy

SGU Press Release

Scots Take Over The World

Scotland soared to victory at the World Amateur Team Championships in Australia today (19 October) with another dominant performance to leave the field trailing.

Going into the final round with a four shot lead the three man Scottish team of Callum Macaulay (Tulliallan), Wallace Booth (Comrie) and Gavin Dear (Murrayshall) had all the pressure on them in their bid to lift the famous Eisenhower Trophy, yet they battled through a severe wind to cruise to a nine stroke victory.

It was a measure of the difficulty that an ecstatic George Crawford, who now bows out as team captain in spectacular style after a four year stint in the job, felt unable to relax until the penultimate hole.
“I somewhat felt we were in a strong position after 14, but ultimately I wasn’t sure until the 17th where Gavin chipped in for an eagle and Callum made birdie,” he said.
“It’s history in the making for our small nation, which is also the Home of Golf. The way golf has developed on the continent means it’s much more difficult to compete at this level. It’s a historic occasion…it’s tremendous!”

In what were the most challenging conditions of the week at the Royal Adelaide Golf Club Callum Macaulay’s one-under par round of 72 represented a magnificent performance under pressure.

That birdie at the 17th was one of six he produced on the day, including a blistering burst of four in succession from the second to help ease any nerves the team might have had early in the round.
“We set out to try to win but to go out and do it is unbelievable,” said an overjoyed Macaulay.

While Bidwells Scottish Amateur Strokeplay champion Wallace Booth failed to break par for the first time in the week that only served to underline the quality of the team effort as they dove-tailed perfectly throughout. With two scores counting each day Gavin Dear matched Macaulay in producing three counting scores and he felt the conditions on the last day played into Scotland’s hands.

“It helps because we are all good wind players,” said Dear, who has produced his very best golf when representing his country this season.
“It was good to have it blowing a near gale and we know that par is a good score in such conditions.”

Scotland’s win is all the more astonishing because it is only eight years since the Home of Golf first entered this event as a separate nation. Previously Scotland’s involvement was as part of Great Britain & Ireland teams who won the title just four times in the 50 year history of the event. Now Scotland dominates the world as it proudly boasts the world titles at both amateur and professional level.

Of the other three home nations Wales produced the best performance tying for 11th place, while England came in 14th and Ireland - winners of the European Team Championship and the Home Internationals this season - finished a deeply disappointing 22nd among the 65 competing sides.
Half a century after the inception of the event there was a delightful symmetry to the outcome since, when it was held for the first time in 1958, it was won by Australia at the Old Course.

This time the Eisenhower Trophy now heads back to the Scottish Golf Union’s base in St Andrews where it will be on display for the next two years.

Four-Time Tour Winner Hurst Slides Into Lead After Second Round in Georgia

from the Duramed Futures Tour website

BRASELTON, Ga., Oct. 18, 2008 - Rookie and four-time Tour winner Vicky Hurst of Melbourne, Fla., moved into the lead of the inaugural $150,000 Duramed Invitational after posting a 2-under-par 69 in today's second round.

Hurst's two-day total of 140 (-2) gives her a one-shot lead over LPGA Tour member Sarah Lynn Sargent (67) of St. Charles, Ill., and Vikki Laing (71) of Musselburgh, Scotland, both tied at 1-under-par 141 through two rounds.

Five players trail by two strokes at even-par 142 in a tie for fourth.

Clear and partly sunny skies welcomed the 72-player field at Chateau Elan Golf Club after first-round play was plagued by rain and temperatures that dipped into the low 60s.

After Laing and first-round leader Jenna Pearson of Wheaton, Ill., were the only players to finish under par on Friday, 12 players found red numbers in Saturday's sunny second round.

The 18-year-old Hurst rebounded from a bogey on her second hole to convert a 25-foot birdie putt on No. 6. She was left with a tap-in for birdie on the ninth hole and added birdies on holes 11 and 15.

"I tried to get in a rhythm early on and was able to finish well," Hurst said. "I'm really excited to be in the lead now because I want to finish the season strong before I go home."

Hurst admitted fatigue became a factor yesterday as first-round play dragged on through windy and rainy conditions. She made bogeys on No. 16 and 17 coming in to finish with an even-par 71 on Friday.

"It was two completely different conditions," Hurst said of the two rounds. "It was really important to get my first round solid because I was getting a little sleepy in the cold and it became tough to keep my focus."

This week is a "welcome home" of sorts for Hurst, who starred on the American Junior Golf Association (AJGA) circuit and was the 2007 Rolex Player of the Year. She won the 2006 Mizuno Junior at Chateau Elan, home of this week's Tour event.

"It's a tough course to walk, but I like the distances," said Hurst, of the 6,406-yard layout at Chateau Elan's Chateau Course. "I had to push her (mother and caddie Koko) up some of the hills."

Sargent emerged from a 16th-place tie and stormed through second-round play with four birdies on the front nine. She recovered from a double-bogey on her second hole.

"I really like this no-cut format because I like to go out there and be aggressive," said Sargent, who is making more than a one-hour commute from her home in Williamston, S.C. "I didn't do anything stupid today and I was able to hit more than seven greens."

Final-round play begins Sunday morning at 8:30 a.m. off the first tee. The leading group of Hurst, Sargent and Laing, tee off at 12:20 p.m. The Duramed Invitational does not feature a 36-hole cut.
