Where are all the great
young American
women golfers?

Asks DAVE ANDREWS
An insight into the state of play in American female golf
There is not one teenage girl who plays golf at my home course on even a semi-regular basis… not one! How many teenage girls do you see playing at your course?
It is time for a wake up call for executives and coaches in women’s golf here in the United States. If they do not develop more young American players to compete with players emerging from other countries, women’s professional golf in the United States could be in serious trouble.
The make-up of the LPGA is becoming more international every year. The question that many in the golf world are now asking is whether that trend will threaten the economic viability of the tour here in the United States.
The United States has always been the economic base of the LPGA. The great majority of the tour’s events are played in this country. Most of corporate sponsors of those events are American companies. Most of the spectators and pro-am participants who support those events are Americans.
The LPGA is going to have to determine if it can continue to attract American support of its events if the number of American players on the tour continues to erode. Are Americans going to continue to follow a sport that is increasingly being dominated by foreign players?
Consider these facts…
In 2000, there were 117 American players in the top 150 on the LPGA money list.
Today there are only 59.
In 2000, 33 of the top-50 money winners on the tour were Americans.
This year there are only 13.
37 of the top-50 players on the tour come from other countries.
South Korea is now the growing dominant force on the LPGA. It is an amazing phenomenon that has developed in less than a decade. It is even more amazing when you consider that the population of South Korea is only 50 million people, compared to 315 million here in the U.S.
Eight years ago there were only 6 South Korean players in the top 150 on the LPGA’s money list. This year there are 38 South Korean players and just 59 Americans. In just eight seasons the number of South Koreans has increased more than six-fold. The number of Americans has been cut in half. If those two trends continue at or near the current pace, South Korean players could come close to outnumbering Americans on the tour in a few more seasons.
The South Korean phenomenon is even more dramatic when you look at the top 50 on the money list. The players in the top 50 are customarily the winners and the contenders in the individual events over the course of a season. They are the players whose names are listed on the leaderboards and who receive the most coverage on television, and in newspapers and magazines. This season there are 17 South Koreans in the top 50. There are only 13 Americans. The other 20 players in the top 50 come from eleven other countries… Sweden (5), Australia (3), Norway (2), Taiwan (2), Japan (2), England (1), China (1), Mexico (1), Brazil (1), Scotland (1), and Italy (1).
Increasingly, players from other countries are qualifying to play on the LPGA as teenagers. With Paula Creamer, Morgan Pressel, and Vicky Hurst as notable exceptions, American players generally spend four years in college programs before they attempt to turn professional.
Why are college women’s golf programs here in the U.S. unable to develop players capable of competing with the young teenage stars coming from much smaller countries like South Korea?
Many golf fans will argue that the LPGA has long been the home of the best women golfers in the world. That is a fact. They will also argue that there have always been many players from several different countries on the tour. That is also a fact. However, it is also a fact that the LPGA itself is concerned about maintaining its sponsor and fan base here in the United States. Its attempt to impose a policy mandating that all tour players learn minimal English language skills is evidence of that. That proposed policy generated a swirl of controversy with charges of xenophobia and discrimination leveled at the tour by many in the media and the public. However, if the LPGA loses the support of sponsors and fans in this country it will be a serious financial blow to the tour and to all of the players on it, regardless of what country they come from.
Developing more great young women golfers here in the United States is one solution to the problem with which nobody can argue. The only concrete answer to protecting the future of the LPGA in this country is for American players to become better golfers. That won’t happen until we begin seeing more young teenage girls teeing it up at courses all over the country.
Next article: How can South Korea, a country with only 50 million people and fewer than 250 golf courses, dominate the United States in women’s professional golf?

A FEW NOTES ON THE AUTHOR
Dave Andrews (pictured above) is a Harvard-educated former television news reporter. He's also an avid golfer who has become a fan of the Duramed Futures Tour. His home course in Concord, New Hampshire, is annually the site of one of the tour's events.
The inspiration for Dave's 2007 novel, "Pops and Sunshine," came from meeting many of the young aspiring women golfers on that tour. Each of them has a passion, dedication and determination that he finds remarkable.
His novel is a fictionaliSation of the dream that these young women share. To order Dave's book, visit http://popsandsunshine.com.

WHY TWO PLAYERS WERE DISQUALIFIED FOR
ACCEPTING A LIFT BETWEEN 18th AND 1st holes

Eun-Hee Ji and Joo Mi Kim were disqualified because Kim's caddie and Ji accepted transportation between the 18th green and first hole when making the turn (a two-tee start was in operation).
Because the violation was not discovered until after their round had been completed and scorecards signed, the two were disqualified.
Angela Park and Ji Young Oh were assessed two-stroke penalties for the same infraction. However, rules officials were notified of the situation when Park and Oh were on the third hole and the issue was resolved prior to them signing their scorecards, thus the two-stroke penalty.
It was specified in Rule 4 of this week's Supplementary Rules of Play, which were given to all players in the field, that players could accept transportation between the first green and second tee; sixth green and seventh tee; ninth green and 10th tee; and 16th green and 17th tee.
It is prohibited for players to accept transportation at any other time during their round of competition.

Andrew Wallace finishes joint runner-up
to Steven Brown in Faldo Final
England’s Steven Brown shot a level-par 72 in the final round to win the Faldo Series Grand Final 2008 at the Costa Do Sauipe Resort in Brazil.
Following rounds of 72 and 69, 21 year-old Brown’s final-round 72 in windy conditions gave him a three-under-par total of 213, four shots ahead of Scotland’s Andrew Wallace, who carded a 73, and overnight leader James Watts from England who struggled to a 79.
Having followed the final group over the closing holes, Nick Faldo presented Brown with the Under 21 trophy and the Harold Riley Prize for the Faldo Series champion, a title previously won by European Tour players Nick Dougherty and Oliver Fisher. Brown receives an invite to the Faldo Series Asia Grand Final at Mission Hills in China and an amateur invite to the European Tour’s 2009 INTECO Russian Open.
After his win, Brown of Chobham in Surrey commented: “It’s been a really good week and I’ve enjoyed the whole trip. The hardest shot today was the first tee shot with the cameras there and Nick watching but after that I just blocked everything out and didn’t put any pressure on myself. I’m really pleased to win.
"When I see the names on the trophy like Nick Dougherty and Oliver Fisher, it feels special and I just hope I can follow in their footsteps.
“Having Nick here is amazing. All the little things he says make such a difference because he’s been there and done it. All of us would love to achieve what he has achieved.
“Now I’ll start preparing for the Faldo Series Asia Grand Final in China. After that, hopefully this week’s R&A World Ranking points will help me get into some top amateur events next season. Also, playing in a European Tour event will be a great experience.”
With 10 nations represented this week, players from outside the UK emerged at the top of the leader-board in their age categories: the Boys Under 18 division was won by India’s Rahul Bakshi with a total of 218; Brazil’s Rafael Becker claimed first place in the Boys U17 on 219; and Spain’s Adrian Otaegui finished on 225 for a win in the Boys U17.
The Boys U15 was won by England’s Thomas Clements with a score of 224 while Hannah Barwood, the current Ladies English Amateur Champion, finished top of the Girls U18 category by two shots on 230.
Six-time Major winner Faldo said: “I’ve been absolutely delighted with this year’s Faldo Series Grand Final. It’s our first final in a new continent and we’ve received a great welcome and some very generous support. Steven played some excellent golf today in tough conditions and kept a cool head. He’s a worthy winner of this year’s Faldo Series.
“I’m also pleased to see so many international players leading the way in their age categories. The Faldo Series is about helping as many young golfers in as many countries as possible so I feel we’re well on the way to achieving that goal.”
Following Faldo Series tournaments in more than 15 countries worldwide, 80 young golfers competed in Brazil this week. Supported by The R&A, the Faldo Series Grand Final 2008 was hosted by Costa Do Sauipe Golf Resort in Brazil’s Bahia region. Competitors aged 12 to 21 from countries as far afield as Iceland, Turkey, Russia and India joined this year’s UK qualifiers for three rounds of tournament golf.

Neil Henderson joint sixth at
Kitty Hawk, North Carolina

Former Scottish schoolboys champion Neil Henderson, a freshman student at Old Dominion University, is settling well on the American college circuit. Neil from North Berwick scored 73 and 71 for a level par total of 144.
He finished four shots behind the joint winners, Jim Bea (St Joseph's) (68-72) and Tobias Pettersson (Liberty) (69-71).

Hannah Lovelock plays in
US women's college golf
history-making event

Hannah Lovelock from Surrey, a freshman student at the University of Missouri, can dine out for years to come, having this week been a competitor in the lowest-scoring tournament in the history of women's college golf in the United States.
It was the Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown at Boulder Creek Golf Club, Boulder City.
Maybe a golf ball flies longer and straighter in the state of Nevada. How else can you explain that Pepperdine University from Malibu, California set an all-time women's college record of 41 under par in winning the team event ... the top 10 teams all had sub-par totals for the 54-hole event ... Lisa McCloskey (Pepperdine), the individual winner, was 17 under par, and won it by only one shot from Therese Koelbaek (UNLV) and Cindy LaCrosse (Louisville) ... and the top 29 individuals all finished under par.
Lisa McCloskey became the first player ever to break 200 in a 54-hole tournament on the US women's college circuit.
Former Surrey champion Hannah Lovelock, pictured above, totalled four-over-par 220 with scores of 73, 72 and 75, which is not bad scoring at all under "normal" circumstances. But these were not normal circumstances and Hannah finished "only" joint 51st in a good-class field of 92 players.
The course measured 6,238yd, which is more than a "pitch-and-putt" lay-out, with a par of 72.

Michele Thomson makes
debut on North-east
Alliance men's circuit

Curtis Cup player and Scottish women’s champion Michele Thomson (McDonald Ellon) made her debut on the North-east Golfers' Alliance circuit at Edzell Golf Club today.
The only female player in a field of 104, Michele, pictured in action at this year's women's home internationals by Cal Carson Golf Agency, playing off the men's back tees, a course of 6,427yd, had a creditable round of five-over-par 76.
She had birdies at the fourth and 17th but a bogey 6 at the long 18th.
The last female player on the NE Alliance circuit was Elaine Wilson, who was an assistant professional at Banchory and later Blairgowrie. Before that Sarah MacLennan, Julie Forbes and one or two others, whose names cannot be recalled, also played for a season or so on the autumn-winter-spring nominally men's circuit in and around the North-east.
"We are delighted to have the reigning Scottish women's amateur champion, and a Curtis Cup player to boot, in Michele Thomson joining us on the North-east Alliance circuit," said secretary Ron Menzies.
"I gave Michele the option of playing off the LGU tees but she chose to play off the men's tees. I adjusted her handicap from +1 to 1 for the net scores, taking into account the yardage difference."
In an interview with Elspeth Burnside in the new issue of "Bunkered" magazine, Michele says she is going to enter the Ladies European Tour School at La Manga in January. What better way to keep her game in good nick than to play on the North-east Alliance circuit until then - and maybe after January?

She had five birdies in her second round, which included holing out from 100 yards for an eagle 2 at the par 4 11th at Sleepy Hollow golf course.
She was four-over-par 148 for the two rounds with scores of 75, 73 and she won by a shot.

Nicky Maddison almost wins

Twin Rivers, Texas

Nicky Maddison from Newcastle, a freshman student at Hutchinson Community College, Kansas, was once again the star of the show for his college team in the 7th annual Coca Cola/MCC Invitational tournament at Twin Rivers Golf Club, Waco in Texas.

Over a very long course - 7,478yd, par 72 - Nicky shot rounds of 76 and 73 for 149 to tie with Greg Snow (Odessa). Unfortunately, Maddison lost the play-off but he has still had a phenomenal first few months to his new "career" on the US college circuit.

Three times Nicky, pictured above, has either been outright first or tied for first place. He's earned the break which he will now have from competitive golf until everything starts up again after the winter, in March or so.

Dale Middleton from Coventry, also a freshman student at Hutchinson CC, had scores of 81 and 82 for 163 and a share of 40th place.
Hutchinson (623) finished third behind Odessa (607) and McLennan (619) in a field of nine teams.

Hannah only one over par

Vegas Showdown

England girl international and past Surrey champion Hannah Lovelock, now a student at Missouri University, needs a good final round to make the top 20 in the Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown over 54 holes at Boulder Creek Golf Club, Boulder City in the state of Nevada.
Hannah, picture by courtesy of Leaderboard Photography, has had rounds of 73 and 72 for a 36-hole tally of 145, not bad scoring over a 6,236yd course with a par of 72.
But so high is the standard of scoring in most US women's college events - and this one is no exception - that one-over-par leaves her sharing 29th place in a field of 92!
Up front, Lisa McCloskey (Pepperdine) is setting a phenomenal pace at 12-under-par 132 with rounds of 67 and 65. She leads by two.
Quite a few of the Continental top-notchers are playing in this event, including Caroline Hedwall (Oklahoma State), the Swedish player who was beaten finalist in the British women's open amateur championship at North Berwick last June and then was the leading individual as Sweden won the women's world amateur team championship for the Espirito Santo Trophy at Adelaide, Australia recently.

Holly Clyburn leads girls’

scoring against the boys

Junior international Holly Clyburn (pictured right by Cal Carson Golf Agency) led the England Under-18 girls’ scoring in their annual match against the England Under-16 boys at Woodhall Spa.
Holly, 17, was playing on her home course and was unbeaten, contributing 1½ points to the scoreline. But her efforts were unable to prevent a comprehensive boys’ victory of 10-5.
However, Linda Bayman, performance director of the English Women’s Golf Association, was undismayed. “This was a very useful training match for a new, young team and it has provided us with plenty of information,” she said.
The girls made a slow start in the morning foursomes when they struggled around the greens. They managed only a half-point from five matches, courtesy of Holly and fellow girl international Heidi Baek.
However, they provided the boys with a much stronger challenge in the afternoon with some good, attacking play.
Holly, who was playing top, secured her singles point when she defeated Matthew Chapman on the final green. English schools’ champion Jamie-Leigh Voss beat James Carney – despite his albatross 2 on the sixth hole.
Other points for the girls were scored by Rachael Goodall, the Northern girls’ champion, and Hayley Davis, the South-west ladies’ scratch champion. Helen Searle, who played impressively for Yorkshire during the County Finals, halved her game.
RESULTS

Royal Aberdeen & Irvine swop LGU events in 2009 because of clash of dates with oil exhibition

A clash of dates with the 2009 North Sea Oil Exhibition has forced the Ladies Golf Union to cancel plans to stage next year's women's home international matches at Balgownie in September. Instead, Royal Aberdeen Golf Club will host the British women's open amateur stroke-play championship over 72 holes from August 19 to 21.
Irvine Golf Club, which was due to stage the stroke-play event, will now take over the women's home internationals from September 9 to 11.
The clubs agreed to the Ladies Golf Union suggestion of a swop when it was realised that the biennial North Sea Oil Exhibition & Conference, would be held at the Aberdeen Conference Centre, quite close to Royal Aberdeen Golf Club, during the planned September week of the home internationals.
Traditionally, every hotel in Aberdeen is booked out well in advance for the week of the North Sea Oil Exhibition and there was the added factor of traffic congestion at the access road to the Royal Aberdeen clubhouse, which might have delayed the international golf teams going to or coming from the course from their hotel, had they been able to find accommodation somewhere out of the city.
Susan Simpson, the Ladies Golf Union Head of Golf Operations at its St Andrews headquarters, commented:
"This very unusual situation came to light when we tried to book accommodation for the 2009 Home International Matches. There was not a bed to be had in Aberdeen that September week. We were left with no option but to seek an alternative venue.
"Both Royal Aberdeen and Irvine Golf Clubs were delighted to assist and facilitated a straight swap of fixtures."
So the British women's open amateur stroke-play championship will go on at Royal Aberdeen GC from August 19 to 21 while the women's home international matches will be played at Irvine Golf Club from September 9 to 11.
Other flagship events of the Ladies Golf Union 2009 tournament schedule will see the RICOH Women's British Open being played at Royal Lytham & St Annes, Lancashire from July 30 to August 2.
And the British women's open amateur championship will be hosted by Royal St David's Golf Club, Harlech in North Wales.
2009 LADIES GOLF UNION TOURNAMENT SCHEDULE
June 9-13: British women's open amateur championship (Royal St David's GC, Harlech).
July 24-25: Vagliano Trophy: Continent of Europe v GB&I (Hamburger Golf Club, Germany).

Michael Stewart's best

yet in America - joint

sixth in Tennessee

Scottish boys' match-play title-holder Michael Stewart from Irvine finished joint sixth in the Bank of Tennessee @ The Ridges men's college tournament at The Ridges Golf & Country Club, Jonesborough, Tennessee (on Sunday).
It was the 18-year-old's highest finish on the US college golf circuit since he started a four-year golf scholarship at East Tennessee State University in Johnson City at the end of August.
Stewart had rounds of 73, 69 and 74 for a level par tally of 216 over the par-72, 7146yd course.
He had seven birdies over rounds one and two but could conjure up only one on the final day which saw him slip from a share of fourth place at the start of the round.
Stewart bogeyed the seventh, ninth and 18th after his birdie at the fourth in his last round.
The Scot was not the highest-placed finisher from the East Tennesssee State squad of five. Welsh cap Rhys Enoch from Cortnall fied for second place on 215 - one shot behind winner Darren Blair (North Carolina State) - with rounds of 71, 73 and 71.
But former British boys champion Jordan Findlay from Fraserburgh, in his final year as a student at East Tennessee State, had a tournament he will want to forget very quickly.
Findlay, 20, had scores of 93, 83 and 78 for a total of 254, 38 over par. He finished last of the 75 players although he was not a member of the East Tennessee State team for this event. He was playing as an individual.

Stewart's great effort enabled East Tennessee State to make a bold bid for the team title. They finished just one shot behind winners Coast Carolina in a field of 14 teams.

Stephanie Meadow

wins again in

United States

Stephanie Meadow, the US-based Irish girls champion of 2006, scored her second big junior tournament in America within a matter of weeks at the weekend.

The 16-year-old from Jordanstown, Northern Ireland, a resident student at the International Junior Golf Academy, Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, led throughout to win the prestigious Golfweek Invitational girls' championship over three rounds at Little River Golf Club, Carthage in North Carolinia. She is pictured above with the girls' championship trophy

Stephanie had rounds of 67, 70 and 74 for a five-under-par total of 211 over the 5888yd, par-72 course. She had 14 birdies over the 54 holes, including title-clinching efforts at the short 16th and long 17th in the final round when she was coming under pressure from the American Junior Ryder Cup player, 16-year-old Sarah Brown, the New Jersey women's champion.

Sarah finished with rounds of 70, 72 and 71 (including birdies at the 12th, 16th and 18th in her last round) for 213, two shots short of catching Stephanie who also won on the International Junior Golf Tour in Florida at the end of September.

Stephanie's ambition is to gain a full cap for the Ireland women's international team - she is already a girls international - and also to play for Great Britain & Ireland in the Curtis Cup.
The way she is going, Miss Meadow is a certainty for an Ireland cap ... and who knows for the 2010 Curtis Cup at Essex, Massachusetts or, more likely, the 2012 Curtis Cup staging at Nairn Golf Club?
She moved to South Carolina with her parents at the end of 2006 so that she could have ideal conditions, summer and winter, to improve her golf. The move is paying off.

Stupples stumbles, Alfredsson swoops
to win LPGA event in China

Helen Alfredsson fired a seven-under-par 65 in the final round to capture the Grand China Air LPGA tournament by three shots on Hainan Island, southern China.
Alfredsson, 43 and scoring her second win of the season, finished at 12-under-par 204 to beat Yani Tseng of Taiwan, who fired a closing 68 and wound up at 207.
The Swede started the day five shots behind second-round leader Karen Stupples but took a one-shot advantage after playing the first 11 holes in six under. She added birdies on numbers 14 and 17 to more than offset a bogey on 18.
Tseng, a rising star who won the LPGA Championship earlier this season, finished with five birdies and a bogey in her final round.
First-round leader Laura Diaz finished in third place at eight under after an even-par round of 72.
Stupples, who was aiming for her first title since 2004, stumbled to a three-over 75 and finished fourth. Stupples birdied the third and fourth holes but had only one other birdie against six bogeys the rest of the way.
Rainy conditions played a role at the US$1.8 million event - the first official LPGA tournament in China - but the weather started to co-operate as play was not stopped during the final round.
Alfredsson had six birdies on the first 10 holes. The final one in that surge gave her the outright lead, moving her to 11-under and a stroke clear of Stupples. Birdies on 14 and 17 moved the Swede to 13-under. Playing three groups ahead of the final threesome, she left the door slightly ajar with a poor chip and a bogey on 18.
"I was certain at that point," Alfredsson said. "I was four shots ahead and I didn't have huge pressure on me for the chip shot. But it was not a great shot. But it's great to be on 18 and have a four-shot lead."
Alfredsson said she is likely to play only another year or two on tour. She gets pleasure beating players who are decades younger.
"They don't want to get beat by us because we are so old, and we still want to beat them because they are so young," said Alfredsson, who captained Europe's 2007 Solheim Cup team.
Alfredsson won the Evian Masters earlier in the season in a three-way playoff. This victory, worth $270,000, pushed her career earnings to over $5 million.
Conditions at the West Coast Golf Club were sultry, lessened only by a light breeze blowing over China's southern island of Hainan -- sandwiched between the Gulf of Tonkin and the South China Sea.
This inaugural event is on the schedule again for next season, although the venue has not been announced.
LEADING FINAL TOTALS

Stephanie Meadow leads
by five in North Carolina

Stephanie Meadow, the South Carolina-based Irish girls champion of 2006 and beaten finalist in 2007, is heading for a second big win on the American junior circuit in a matter of weeks.
She leads the girls' section of the Golfweek Junior Invitational tournament by five shots with one round to go in the 54-hole event at Little River Golf Club, Carthage in North Carolina.
Stephanie, a former pupil of Belfast High School, crammed 11 birdies into the first two rounds of 67 (33-34) and 70 (36-34) over the 5888yd, par-72 course.
At seven-under-par 137, the 16-year-old redhead from Jordanstown, Northern Ireland has a five-shot advantage over her closest rivals, Americans Marisa Kamelgarn (70-72) and Sarah Brown (70-72) in the field of 32.
Stephanie won an International Junior Golf Tour event in Florida near the end of September.
Home for Stephanie and her parents is now Hilton Head Island, South Carolina. They moved there in in 20o6 so that she could become a resident pupil at the International Junior Golf Academy.
A five-hour school day ends at lunchtime, leaving her plenty of time for golf practice, coaching and fitness work in the gymnasium.
"Northern Ireland is a wonderful place to live but it's not exactly a sun trap in the winter," says Stephanie.
"At home, the only chance I had to practise in the winter was in the morning before I went to school. And in the wet and the cold my hands would often turn blue. Here, in South Carolina, it's a lot warmer and much more enjoyable."
Her ambitions are to become a full Ireland international team member - she has already played for the Irish girls' team - and also play for Great Britain & Ireland in the Curtis Cup before she turns professional, presumably after four years playing on the US women's college circuit as a student at one of the top colleges.

With one round to go, Gemma is 10 shots behind the leader, Wake Forest's Cheynne Woods who has scored 75 and 71 for two-over-par 146.

In the Men's Landfall Tradition tournament at the same venue, Alan Glynn (Xavier University) from Middlesex was in joint 31st place in a field of 60 with scores of 77 and 80 for 157, 11 shots behind the triple joint leaders.
