Your chance to rent a villa for a week's golf in Murcia, Spain

Top picture shows the 18th hole at the five-star La Torre Golf Resort. Immediately above: An early morning cut for the 16th green on one of several Jack Nicklaus-designed courses in the area.

Editor's note: Rob Humphries is one of the fathers who supported the Under-16 girls' section of the recent 2nd Hacienda del Alamo Women's Winter Festival in Spain. With Rob's permission, I am publishing in full his follow-up note because it contains an excellent offer for any Kirkwoodgolf reader who wants to go on a golfing holiday to the Murcia region of Spain.

Cut-price offer from
HDA Festival
father Rob for his
villa at La Torre
Colin,
Hope you are well and resting after all that organising for the HDA Festival for Women. My daughter and I thoroughly enjoyed our trip over to Spain to enter the tournament, it was fantastic experience for her. Unfortunately not enough, in my opinion, is done for junior girl golfers so full credit to your efforts and organisation. It was great to play among some superb golfers and the weather helped.
I enjoyed it so much I would like to try and help female/junior girl golfers as best I can.
As you know we were based in our own villa during the Festival at the nearby Jack Nicklaus La Torre Golf Resort.
We have managed to negotiate a special discount of 20% off normal pricing for all of our readers/visitors to Kirkwoodgolf.co.uk for the rental of this beautiful detached villa (pictured above).
The Jack Nicklaus Golf resort is located in Murcia, an area of Spain which enjoys over 300 days of sunshine per year. The detached villa is located on La Torre golf course and is within 15 mins of many other top courses in an area which is fast becoming the home of golf in Europe.
Renters will benefit from discounted resident golf fees at the following courses, El Valle and Hacienda Requilme (both recently held European Tour Hi5ProTour events), La Torre and Mar Menor Golf Resort. Other nearby courses include Roda (home of PGA Europe), Peraleja (the new Seve Ballesteros course), Lo Romero and Mosa Trajectrum. While La Manga and Hacienda del Alamo (home of the HDA Women's Winter Festival of Golf) are just short 25 minutes drive away.
The superb resort is situated just 15 minutes from San Javier’s Murcia airport, or 50 mins from Alicante, so golf in the sun is nearer than you think.
The facilities at the La Torre resort include five different restaurants and three bars, along with a fully stocked supermarket if you fancy a quiet night in. If you’re not playing golf every day, there are 15 communal pools to cool off in, and tennis courts to perfect that serve. It also has a large golf practice area and putting green if your game needs working on!
The villa has two large bedrooms (twin or doubles), so therefore can easily sleep a group of four golfers, and two sets of golf clubs are available at the property to use free of charge.
This exclusive offer for golfers from Kirkwood golf, mean that prices start from as little as £200 per week (£50 per person based on a four-ball) so if you want to play some golf in beautiful sunshine throughout the year, don’t delay book now, please email villainthesun94@aol.com for availability, prices and any further information.
I would like to offer 20% discount to any female golfer who would be interested in renting my two bed-roomed villa (pictured above) on already extremely competitive prices, around £495 (£400, including discount) per week at peak time.
Therefore, if four shared, it would cost around £125 per person per week or approximately £100 each with discount.
It is an ideal base to play golf in the sunshine (26 degrees this weekend!).
They would also benefit from residents' green fees on four of the courses.
I would really like to try and assist lady and girl golfers. Wish I could do more in the UK.
Rob Humphries
+++If you are attracted by Rob's offer, please E-mail him direct at villainthesun94@aol.com

Paul Ferrier makes solid start

with 74 at Southern Highlands

Paul Ferrier, the Baberton player who won the Scottish boys' match-play title in 2007, has made a solid start to the Southern Highlands Collegiate tournament at Southern Highlands Golf Club, Las Vegas in Nevada.
In his first competitive outing of the second half of the 2008-2009 US college golf season, the 19-year-old freshman student at Charltotte University, North Carolina returned a two-over-par 74 over a very long course (7510yd) to be in joint 23rd position in a field of 80 players behind four joint leaders on 67 - Matthew Giles (Southern California), Ben Martin (Clemson), Colby Smith (UNLV) and Cameron Tringate (Georgia Tech).
Paul, pictured above, had bogeys at the fourth, 11th and 14th but birdied the 16th in halves of 37.
Gavin Reid (Southern California), from Ballynahinch, Northern Ireland, is in joint 63rd position after a 79.
Banchory's James Byrne (Arizona State) is still in a major form slump. He again failed to break 80, scoring an 81 for a share of 70th place. James had double bogeys at the first, 14th and short 17th in halves of 39 and 42. He did not have a single birdie on his card, which is just not Byrne's style at all.

Kristy struggling to find her form

on United States circuit

Surrey county player Kirsty Rands, a freshman student at the University of Mississippi, is getting her second tournament outing this week on the 2008-2009 US college golf circuit.
Kristy, pictured right, is obviously struggling to play anywhere near her best form. She had a nine-over-par 81 to be lying joint 93rd in a field of 96 for the Louisiana State University Classic at Baton Rouge.
She had a 9 at the par-4 fourth and a double bogey 6 at the 12th. Her only birdie came at the seventh.
In her first tournament, back in October, she averaged 81.3 strokes per round.
Leading the field over the par-72, 6425yd University Club course is Calle Nielson (Virginia University) with a five-under-par 67. She leads by one from Sweden's Jacqueline Hedwall (Louisiana State University) and Allie White (North Carolina).

Post University, Connecticutt's three Scots - Jamie Blake, a junior (third-year) student from Arbroath, freshmen David McGregor from Helensburgh and Gavin Wilson from Ladybank - all struggled over a man-sized Mission Viejo Country Club course of 7,143yd with a very demanding par of 71 in the 59th Southern California Intercollegiate tournament earlier this week.
The lowest-scoring Post University player was junior Lee Wanklyn from Berkshire. He tied for 31st place in a field of 75 players with scores of 83, 76 and 79 for 238.
Jamie Blake, pictured right, had rounds of 78, 83 and 80 for 241 and a share of 41st place while David McGregor and Gavin Wilson both totalled 251 and shared 62nd place. David scored 82, 82 and 87, Gavin 81 82 and 88.
Winner was Matt Ewald (Washburn) with a three-over-par total of 219, made up of scores of 74, 74 and 71. Three over par he might have been, but Matt still won by six strokes.
It was a reality check for the Post University team who have done well over the past year in mainly East of the country competitions.

Pat Shepherd (30 in a row) has been

Turriff ladies champion 33 times

Turriff Golf Club has confirmed that Pat Shepherd won its ladies' club champion 30 years in a row (from 1959 to 1988) before her record run was ended by Janice Florence.
Pat, the daughter of the late Turriff club professional David Shepherd, regain the title in 1990 and won it again in 1992.
Her last Turriff club championship triumph - the 33rd - was in the year 2000.
That means that Pat won her club title in SIX different decades - from the 1950s through to the 200s.
So that's the benchmark now (a) consecutive club titles, (b) total number of club titles, and (c) winning in different decades.
If you know of anyone who can top any of Pat Shepherd's records, E-mail the details to Colin@scottishgolfview.com
+We would like to display a picture of Pat but don't have one on our files. If Pat or one of her friends reads this and can help out in that direction, E-mail it to the above address. Thanks

Fiona Farquharson has been

18 times champion of

King James VI club, Perth

FROM COLIN FARQUHARSON
Former SLGA staff person Pam Kerr suggested to me that SLGA tournament officer Fiona Farquharson had a formidable collection of club titles which was worth a mention in our series of multi-club champions.
I E-mailed Fiona (pictured right) for the details and here is her reply:
"I joined King James VI Golf Club, Perth in 1986. I won the King James VI ladies' championship from 1986 – 1995 (10 consecutive times), and again in 1997, 1999 - 2001, 2003, 2004, 2007 and 2008. So far I have won it 18 times. In most of the unsuccessful years I was the beaten finalist.
"I started at the SLGA in January 2005 and I don’t play nearly as much golf nowadays! Perhaps that’s why I didn't win in 2005 and 2006!
"I also won quite a number of club championship titles at Camperdown with many of them consecutive but I don’t have the precise details.
"As there are many ladies already listed with far more consecutive wins than me, I am sure that I don’t need to bother to find out."

Thanks, Fiona. More grist to the mill!

Michele Wie to sign with IMG for "fresh start"

FROM THE GOLFWEEK.COM WEBSITE
By BETH ANN BALDRY
Senior Staff Writer
Michelle Wie is expected to sign with IMG, a source close to the situation has told Golfweek. IMG’s list of LPGA clients runs deep, including Paula Creamer, Annika Sorenstam, Natalie Gulbis, Morgan Pressel and Se Ri Pak.
The move follows the Sports Business Journal’s report on March 10 that Wie recently parted ways with William Morris Agency, the firm that has represented the teenage star since she turned professional in 2005.
Jill Smoller, whose client list includes superstars Kevin Garnett, Serena Williams, Sharon Stone and Queen Latifah, served as Wie’s lead agent for William Morris. She traveled with Wie as recently as last month for the SBS Open in Hawaii, where Wie finished second.
“Michelle enjoyed working with WMA, and has nothing but positive things to say about the company,” Wie’s father, B J, wrote in an e-mail. “But this is a fresh start for Michelle on the course and off.”
B J would not comment on his daughter’s future plans for management, but did confirm that her next LPGA appearance will be March 26-29 at the LPGA International tournament March 26-29 in Phoenix.

Kingussie's cluster of long-reigning champions

Continuing our "series" about men and women who have been multi-winners of their club champions.
Here's an E-mail from Ian Chadburn, secretary of Kingussie Golf Club.

Colin
There are in fact three major champions here at Kingussie

Ladies - Maggie Lawson - Champion 16 times on the trot from 1987 - 2002 & again in 2006
Men - John Gunn - Champion - 1954; 1959 - 1961; then 17 times on the trot from 1963 - 1980; 1982 - 1985 & finally 1988 / 89
Norman MacWilliam - 1981; 1986 / 87; 1993; then 9 on the trot 1995 - 2003; and to date 2007. Norman also holds the par 67 course record of 60 gained in the Kingussie Open 2001

Ian Chadburn
Secretary
Kingussie Golf Club
sec@kingussie-golf.co.uk

PS from Colin Farquharson: Kingussie the village/town (I've not been there for a number of years and it is probably a lot bigger than I remember it) is, of course, a hotbed of shinty and I've heard it said that most shinty players who play golf, play it left-handed. Someone once told me that Kingussie Golf Club must have more left-handers in its membership that any other golf club in Scotland/anywhere. Perhaps Ian Chadburn can confirm this?
Quick reply from Ian Chadburn:
That information I do not have but as you note there are a good number and I would say all male.

Sorenstam challenges Tiger to

television charity showdown

FROM THE GOLF.COM WEBSITE
By JIM GORANT
While she was playing, Annika Sorenstam let her sticks do the talking, but now that she's "stepped away" from the game, she's running her mouth, sort of. Appearing as a guest speaker at the SMU Athletic Forum in Dallas, Sorenstam challenged her buddy Tiger Woods to a one-on-one, handicap-adjusted, televised showdown.
"If it's for a good cause, a good charity and it's good for golf, then I'm in," she said. "I haven't been playing much and he's probably in peak shape, so I would need a couple of months to get ready. Then I'd love to play him."
But she didn't leave it at that, saying that Woods has dodged her challenges before, including one for a pull-up throwdown. So far, Woods has not responded, but since both players are represented by IMG's Mark Steinberg, if there's any real interest in a match, it should be easy to set up.
Other than that, Sorenstam's enjoying her retirement, although she hasn't totally got away from the game. "I'm surprised," she said, "at how much I've watched on TV."

LPGA get Torrey Pines for their

Samsung Championship in autumn

Torrey Pines Golf Course, San Diego in California will host an LPGA event for the first time in 27 years under an agreement to hold the Samsung World Championship on the South Course in September.
The Samsung World Championship, to be played from September 17 to 20, has only a 20-player field that includes the four major champions and top players from the money list.
Paula Creamer won the event last year at Half Moon Bay in San Francisco.
The public golf course along the Pacific cliffs will be nearly 1,000 yards shorter for the Samsung World Championship at just over 6,700 yards.
The LPGA last went to Torrey Pines for the 1983 Inamori Classic.
The San Diego Union-Tribune reported that the South Course became available for the LPGA when two corporations cancelled outings during the week the LPGA wanted its tournament. Another corporate outing to be held on the Monday of tournament week will limit practice by the 20 players in the field, but that's a small price to pay for obtaining the use of such a high profile venue.
Jon Maddern, deputy director of golf operations for the city of San Diego, said the tournament organiser IMG, has agreed to reimburse the city for lost green fees on the South Course and for staff overtime during the tournament, a total bill which he estimated at $200,000.

Continuing search for record club champion sequence

Eileen Manson (below) and Laura McLardy (right)

Eileen Manson won Thurso ladies' title 24 years in a
row and again in 2005, 2007 and 2008

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Waiting for verification from Turriff and Oldmeldrum Golf Clubs about the club championship records of Pat Shepherd and Janice Florence respectively.
In the meantime, former Northern Counties LGA captain Mairi Orr has drawn my attention to the claims of Eileen Manson.
Eileen, herself, has E-mailed me to correct the original figures we had on this website. She says:
"I have won at Thurso 24 years consecutively, not 23, plus 2005, 2007 & 2008."
Eileen was Reay Golf Club ladies champion 16 years in a row from 1988 to 2003.
Laura McLardy, who came to the fore as a Duff House Royal and Northern Counties team member before she moved to Aberdeen, joined Murcar Links and switched to Aberdeenshire, has a pretty formidable record at the Banff club where she is still a member.
Laura, who is the Aberdeenshire county treasurer, tells me:
"Todate I've managed 16 consecutive (ladies title) wins at Duff House Royal and 18 in total. First won it in 1990, aged 13 (now we can work out how old Laura is!).
"Won it again in 1991 but then was pipped by Jackie Duncan in 1992. Since then I have won the DHR ladies title from 1993 to 2008. The Duff House Royal title has always been stroke-play and last year was the cloest I've experienced. There was only one shot in it, Ashley Clark being the runner-up.
"Currently it's the best three rounds from four. The format has changed a couple of times over the years. Have only managed one title at Murcar Links thus far."
Laura also adds the following information:
"I'm pretty sure that Pat Shepherd won the Turriff title on 30 consecutive occasions before being beaten in the late 1980s (or early 1990s) by Janice Florence. Pat was in the Guinnes Book of Records for her feat.
"Janice Florence, in turn, won 29 consecutive titles at Oldmeldrum, before Donna Pocock ended her run. I think both have won further titles.
"Not sure how many times people like Linda Smith at Buckpool or Meg Sivewright at Keith will have won their ladies club titles. Rose Anderson has a lot of titles at Huntly but broke an arm around 10 years ago and had to withdraw that year, so she won't have as many consecutive titles was would otherwise have been the case"

British Colleges title and Kittocks

course record for Holly Clyburn

England girl international Holly Clyburn (Woodhall Spa) has won the first British Colleges open golf championship over the Kittocks course at Fairmont St Andrews (formerly St Andrews Bay).
Holly, who is a student at the Grimsby Institute, where she is studying Sport & Leisure, had rounds of 72 and 74 for 146 to finish 12 shots ahead of runner-up Jessica Schiele, also of Grimsby Insitute, with Sarah Davies (Runshaw College) third in the two-day event.
Holly's round of 72 is a women's record for the Kittocks course. She is pictured right, by Cal Carson Golf Agency, in action at the recent Hacienda del Alamo Women's Winter Festival in Spain.
"I was pleased with my golf in difficult conditions on both days and, apart from a couple of bad holes, I played very solidly," said Holly. who had her 18th birthday in early February.
The men's individual title was won by Ryan Campbell (Elmwood College, Cupar) with Daniel Russell (Easton College) runner-up and Ben Cotton (Myerscough College) third.
There does not seem to have been a women's team event - no result on the British Colleges Sport website - but Myerscough College won the men's team championship ahead of Chichester College with Elmwood College third.
Sorry, the organisers have not supplied all the scores (It's thanks to Holly Clyburn's mother that we know about the event at all!).
+If you know any of the scores that we are lacking, feel free to E-mail them to Colin@scottishgolfview.com
++You can read a later report, which has news of Ryan Campbell also setting a course record and also a picture of him with the trophy, by switching over to www.scottishgolfview.com

Kimberly Kim decides she's going
to Denver University

FROM THE GOLFWEEK.COM WEBSITE
By BETH ANN BALDRY, Senior Staff Writer
Kimberly Kim has made up her mind. The 2006 US Women’s Amateur champion called Denver (University) coach Sammie Chergo on March 5 and gave a verbal commitment.
“I really liked the team a lot,” said Kim, pictured above. “I liked all the courses we saw on the visit, too.”
Kim, 17, previously had committed to Oklahoma State, but changed her mind when head coach Laura Matthews left the programme.
Kim was set to join Jane Rah and Sue Kim in Stillwater, Oklahoma, this fall. Now both Sue and Kimberly will join the Pioneers.
Kim’s college decision was a hot topic on the Golfweek discussion boards, with more than 15,000 page views and 150 postings. With so many rumours flying around, Kim even got on the boards herself to try and set the record straight.
“I felt like I got insulted a lot over not being able to decide (on college),” Kim said. “Isn’t it a tough decision? I’m glad it’s over and I can look forward to (high school) graduation.”

British Women's Open Champion

Jiyai Shin clickety-clicks over

weekend for Singapore win

British Women's Open champion Jiyai Shin from South Korea covered the last 36 holes of the $2million HSBC Women's Champions Tournament in Singapore in 12-under-par with a pair of 66s.
Not surprisingly, she won the title and the $300,000 first prize by two shots with an 11-under-par total of 277. Runner-up was the third-round leader, Australian Katherine Hull.
It was the 21-year-ols Shin's fourth LPGA victory in eight months.
Last year, before becoming an LPGA member, Shin, pictured, won the Women’s British Open and added victories in the Mizuno Classic in Japan and season-ending ADT Championship. She also won seven times on the Korea LPGA and took a Japanese LPGA event.
Now fifth-ranked in the world, Shin birdied the first four holes to get into contention, then took advantage of Hull’s back-nine collapse. Hull, the former Pepperdine star who won the Canadian Women’s Open last summer, finished with a 74.
Angela Park (68), Paula Creamer (70) and SBS Open winner Angela Stanford (73) tied for third at eight under.
Top-ranked Lorena Ochoa, the 2008 champion coming off her 25th LPGA Tour victory last week in Thailand, shot a 70 to tie for sixth with Jane Park (73) and Sun Young Yoo (73) at 7 under.
Hull had a four-stroke lead at 13 under par with nine holes left, but dropped four strokes on the next five holes to hand the lead to Shin.
The Australian’s bogey on the par-4 10th and Shin’s birdie on the par-3 11th cut Hull’s advantage to two strokes. Hull gave that away with a double bogey on the par-5 13th, then bogeyed the par-3 14th to fall a stroke behind.
Shin took a two-stroke lead with a birdie on the par-5 15th, and closed with three straight pars. She made 12 birdies in her bogey-free weekend 66s after opening with rounds of 72 and 73.

Disqualification blow for Katy
but Lynn Univ win team title

Despite the most unfortunate disqualification of Katy McNicoll's first-round score of 74, Lynn University’s women’s golf team earned its first victory of the season after claiming first place at the NIU Springlake Invitational at Sebring, Florida.
Katy's team-mate Megan Mangone earned medalist honours for the second time in her career while Maha Maddioui finished second.
Katy, pictured right by Cal Carson Golf Agency, from Carnoustie, had a 74 in the first round but her marker failed to put a score opposite one hole, although it would seem that she had put 74 in for a total.
Katy signed her card and handed it in to the Recorder without noticing the slip.
She had a 73 in the second round and her total of 147 would have been good enough to finish joint second - a reminder to Katy (and all players) that she should check EVERY scorecard carefully before signing it and handing it in.
Four of the Fighting Knights finished in the top-10 led by Mangone. The senior from Windham, N.H. is enjoying a career year in her final season with the Blue & White. Mangone has notched six consecutive top-10 finishes, including two tournament wins. She fired a second round 75 to pull out the one-stroke victory over Haddioui.
Lynn University (599) recorded its lowest 36-hole score of the season in recording a 297 team score. The Blue & White finished 18-strokes ahead of Florida Gulf Coast (617) while Methodist (641) took third.
The Knights return to action on Monday, March 9, at the Peggy Kirk Bell in Winter Park, Florida.
